Why I left Bangkok, DON'T say I didn't WARN you!

#bangkok #thailand #vietnam #phuquoc
I had to leave Bangkok! There was something I didn't like and I will tell you about it! It may not bother everyone but it bothered me. I fled to Vietnam to the wonderful Sunset Town development located on the island of Phu Quoc.

Exactly, the silence would drive you nuts. That place he was wandering around is clearly apeing an Italian town. I wonder if they're copying the chinese pretend towns of: London, Paris, Rome, etc. The only people who go there are chinese tourists.

Local Vietnamese don't visit Phu Quoc because 1. High cost, including airfares and accommodations. 2. Being overcharged for everything afterwards on Phu Quoc. 3. There are better touristic alternatives, including those outside of Vietnam even for the same cost.

I was sick by my 2nd day in Bangkok. As soon as I exited the elevators on the street level of my hotel the smog was noticeable. There was just a lingering sewage smell. As for the haze, in Pattaya there were days when I'd look toward the water and it just looked like a gray wall. That development looks cool... like a movie set.

I’m fortunate to have a place in Krung Thep and in the country, I get to enjoy the seclusion of the countryside and the convenience of the city. I have traveled quite a bit, 48 states and 2 territories in the US, all over Europe and many areas of Asia including the Philippines and love the people, culture, language, foods, access to healthcare and ease of transportation that Thailand affords for me thats the place that makes me happy.

Two things. What day did you make that video about the nice clear blue sky in Phu Quoc? I live in Central Pattaya with a great view of Koh Larn, and I had to take a picture and post on my Instagram about how clear the view was yesterday the 28th. Maybe there was some sort of atmospheric condition that cleared out the whole Bay of Thailand for a day or two 🤞 . If you see my second question and have time to answer? I’ve also seen your other video of Phu Quoc and visa requirements for Americans and we can do visa on entry without any prior applications. Before I watched your video tonight I actually looked on the Internet today about entry to Phu Quoc and it says you have to do the online request for entry paperwork, and on entry go to the visa on arrival window with all your paperwork and two passport photos, basically the same as going to mainland Vietnam. So I’m just wondering if I want to hop on a plane tomorrow to Phu Quoc, can I just go through immigration with my American passport and get visa on entry without any prior approvals and the hour plus line I had to do last time I went to Ho Chi Minh? Thanks for any replies 3:45

Well done! I am from NYC but living in Vietnam 30 years with my wife who I met in NYC in 1976. First trip to Phu Quoc was in 2001 when there were only a few sleepy hotels. The daily flight home was cancelled and so had to take a six hour ferry and another six hours by road to get back to Saigon. Of course all that’s obviously changed. I have been to that amazing community on Phu Quoc they call Amalfi and yes… it is amazing beyond belief. I know nothing officially but tend to think that eventually the authorities will look to market that area as a retirement place for foreigners. And as you said… the island has special status and they may add retirement to that but again I have no official knowledge. Like anywhere though to be fulfilled in retirement one needs some type of regular activity even if only walking for a few hours. I have just made my first trip out of Vietnam in five years being a local package tour to northern India which was incredible not to mention incredibly cheap. I really love living in this part of the world and have been to Thailand many times and enjoy my visits there too. Hope you find peace and joy here in Vietnam!

You seem to be saying what I'm thinking..... "Is Thailand REALLY my best option. Or am I being too forgiving towards the "Land of Smiles'" drawbacks which I notice appear to be exponentially growing, yet I kinda try to pretend I don't notice are exponentially growing (with seemingly government approved, or even encouraged, Thai jingoism and anti-farang racially based xenophobia being not the least of those)? One can only be disliked and patently unwanted for so long, before feelings of reciprocation consequentially and quite naturally begin to kick in.

Good questions. First thing I noticed when I arrived in Bangkok was the air quality. By looking up not because it made me uncomfortable or short of breath. I didn't notice any of that at all. Actually. I'm going to Bangkok May 28th, arriving May 30th and hopefully we'll be there for a year. After that, I'll decide if it's the place to live for me or whether someplace like Vietnam would be a better choice. I remember when I first came to Thailand - 40 years ago - and checked into a 4 star hotel. In the morning I decided to get room service - and when the chap came I asked for 2 boiled eggs and toast. He looked at me ..'eh,' 'two boiled eggs?' 'Eh!' 'Yes, eggs'....'eh!' Exasperated, held two fingers up and flapped my elbows up and down to suggest 'chicken.' 'Oh....OK...' - he left, and I waited almost 2 hours, thinking 'how long does it take to boil an egg for God's sake?' Just as my fuse was down to an eighth of an inch there was a knock on the door - and the same beaming chap came in with two large saucepans. It turned out there was a boiled chicken in each....but...but...but...he'd forgotten the toast! 😭😭😭

In saying that, retirement would be costly here. We are considering our options for retirement from my job and Indonesia, Vietnam and Ecuador are likely contenders. There's also Hainan Island that may be an option too. The good thing about staying in Asia is that I am entitled to health care in HK which is virtually free and of a very high standard.

Too bad there are no Longer term VISA options on Vietnam. We enjoyed 30 days in country last fall, but didnt do any islands like we did in our 30 day Philipine stay. How do you spell the name of the island?

I love Bangkok. The air pollution doesn't bother me but I must admit I only stay there 2 weeks or so sometimes I stay a month. Living there might be different. Vietnam is slow and not as much social. It's beauty is amazing and the prices are probably one of the cheapest in Asia combined with the high quality scenery. Tough choice.

Sorry about the health issues. But given BKK’s constant gridlock I’m not shocked air quality is bad, even w all the rain. But the Thai gov just started making it tougher for foreigner to stay - unless you’re mega wealthy - so not a long term proposition.

Interesting development in Vietnam. I have visited Saigon and Nha Trang. Good internet even out in the boonies. Few spoke English but those who did, spoke it well.

I spent some time figuring out the levels of pollution over the year comparing Hua Hin, Phuket & Pattaya, did not find much yet. How do those areas in Thailand compare to your location in Vietnam? It's not very accurate to compare a couple of days between only 2 locations.

Pollution is a major concern for me too. Hopefully, Thailand and the other Southeast Asian countries will realize the health hazard for their citizens. I’ll be retired there in 6 years. Maybe things will improve. If not, I’ll have to take annual trips out of the country
