I completely agree that through languages you can uncover things about yourself. I'm not who I used to be at all, and I've learned so much about the me that was hidden under fear and anxiety. 🤗 Thanks for sharing your journey!

Haven’t left a KZread comment in YEARS, but watching this really hit different, so I thought I’d share. I had the immense privilege of studying my heritage language, Indonesian, for about 2.5 years in university. Never grew up speaking it other than a handful of words. Needless to say, once I got those beginner gains and was able to draw connections between what I learned in class and in what I heard at home, I was ecstatic. I felt like I was finally “reclaiming” a piece of myself that I felt I had some innate responsibility to do, a key to the door that I had always wanted open but didn’t know how to till that moment. I was riding off of some “high”, which in looking back, I now realize was that exact definition of “authentic self” in language learning that you beautifully defined. However, more responsibilities were added onto my plate on as I progressed through uni, and I faced a lot of pressure to shift my focus towards post-grad career plans. Then came the pandemic, and everything completely changed. The end of my second year of Indonesian was an absolute DRAG, and I was finding myself constantly doing the bare minimum and too mentally exhausted to show up and put in the work. Combined with that was a lot of other personal emotional baggage that was directly associated with the journey of understanding my cultural heritage and Indonesian American identity. By my final term of Indonesian my senior year, I didn’t even do the final project (which was required to even pass the class). I literally told my professor to fail me because I was just so emotionally exhausted with the entire journey. No gas left in the tank to continue onto the final class. I’ve taken a bit of time away from education and the workforce by going abroad to heal from that which were university and identity discovery, but of course, that curiosity and desire to learn Indonesian has never truly gone away. I’ve been away for almost 8 months now, planning to go to Indo for the first time in 7 years in December, and I’ve recently felt mentally ready to revisit the language learning journey again. Over the last month, I’ve been putting in the work, but those inner discomforts and challenges that you mentioned have really come up. Besides doing my best to move past the emotions associated with my language/heritage learning journey in uni, the sometimes overwhelming thought of shame or inadequacy in not knowing one’s heritage language sometimes gets the best of me. It can be hard to move past these mental hindrances that are so deeply woven in how we perceived ourselves to be and our identity while growing up, and they can even include greater underlying perceptions of ourselves that manifest in self-limiting attitudes (like self-doubt, people-pleasing, etc.). It certainly has for me, and I think these beliefs have come up and/or reinforced themselves as a result of progressing through the young adult journey as a whole. I always seem to envy my 2019 self, because he accomplished so much and was in a better headspace. But after reflecting upon your video, maybe it’s because he was truly *acting* upon the understanding of his most authentic self at the time, acknowledging self-limitations and the required discomfort for true growth and ultimately taking action in honor of his curiosity and dreams. I won’t be that same person with that same innocence/understanding of life, but I can still strive to be my most authentic self in this moment in time, knowing what I know now and having experienced all that I have up till now. And with that, the pieces will fall into place, including the overwhelming but possible journey of learning a heritage language. Thank you for this beautiful reminder that language learning is, at its core, a journey of authenticity and bravery in addition to action. While the exercises, day-to-day consistency, and functionality of languages may not be charged with emotion, they are indeed an extension of ourselves, our emotion-filled, beautifully authentic selves.

What a BEAUTIFUL reflection! I resonate so much with what you say. Authenticity is so important in language learning and honoring our journey, amidst feeling like we are dragging along or when we compare our past to present selves. A podcast episode I did reminds me of you, which you can check out here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fHyFuNmyeLyrp8o.html I truly appreciate you sharing all of this with us here, especially with heritage language learning. I also feel lots of inadequacy being a heritage language learner, it is SUCH a nuanced journey. When you get it, you get it. We're so glad to have you as part of the community, and I hope I can continue helping you honor your authentic journey through upcoming videos :)
