I recall one time my friends and I went out to a pub in western Japan in the fall of 1994. We saw these Japanese women sitting in a group of 4 or 5. They were goading me to go ask in Japanese if they would like to join us. Although I was nervous, I summoned up the courage because they had guilt-tripped me, saying they would approach if they knew Japanese. I walked over and blurted out in my very rudimentary Japanese if they would like to join us. They seemed to at least consider the idea and asked to see where my friends were sitting. When the women saw my friends, they changed their minds with one of them flashing either an engagement ring or a wedding ring When I got back to the table where my friends were sitting, they exclaimed in amazement, “We didn’t really think you would go over! We didn’t mean it!” To this day I still great pride at making that approach because it was my first time living in a foreign country. My second experience in 2009 in northern Japan is more similar to your experience at the Italian party. I had been teaching some Japanese workers at a Hawaiian-themed clothing store. They invited me to a hula party that they were having. It turns out when I got there that no one came up to introduce me to people or show me around. So I just stood around watching everyone hula dance all evening. At least I got paid for the English lessons I taught them.

I have been using Rosetta Stone for Russian for about 10 months. I made it through Unit 12 and I noticed that my reading and writing (especially my reading) were very strong, but my listening and speaking had barely progressed at all. I watched your first video and signed up for Pimsleur. Honestly, I love it! I am an audio learner by nature so it helps me so much more than Rosetta Stone. I "know" almost all the words I am have used so far but it really helps hearing them and putting them into practice. I am also able to hear the grammar changes and stuff quickly. Something I never really got with Rosetta Stone. My opinion Pimsleur is sooooooo hard, yet sooooooo rewarding. Have a nice day ❤

Interesting ideas. I have done those restrictions in order to learn English and German, avoiding any native Ukrainian or Russian. I am actually on the point, where I am dwelling to switch my daily activities to Polish and French in order to learn them more deeply. This tactic is not the easiest for me, but it works with the languages. Unfortunately it doesn't work for me with sport activities. Every time I started to do some excersises, I hated that so much and I saw them as punishment, that I stopped them. I couldn't see the results. I have never enjoyed every single sport activity: fitness, dance, jogging etc , even though I need them. Maybe some people have the same with languages? The people, who do some sports: how do you manage to keep motivated?

Good insights. Stephen Krashen has emphasised how the brain is far more open to language when its relaxed and comfortable. Language learning is very cognitively demanding - your brain will resist the language if you attempt to consciously force it into doing that work. Children learn their first language not because they want to 'learn' language, but because they want to find out cool and interesting stuff, and they can only do that by listening and communicating. In my experience, people who try to learn languages through brute force learning often get all their exams, but end up with very stilted language skills. A close Chinese friend struggled for 10 years with her English (despite living in Ireland all that time) until someone gave her some pulpy detective novels. She got stuck into reading dozens of them, and the end result was amazing - within months she made a huge step upwards in fluency without doing any 'study' whatever. It was all about the fun and immersion. Its amazingly hard to get that message through to people who see all learning as punishment.

Loving your videos, subscribed, great videos! Wondering if learning two languages at the same time is really pushing it if having 4-5 hours a day to study/immersion. I so wish there's something like LingoCulture or Baselang for Italian as the savings as you know could add up nicely if doing 5-6 classes a week for 6 months Trying to decide if I should switch to French or actually learn both Italian and French at the same. Not sure if it might be too much. I've about 20-25 hours a week to study thanks to a big break up now hehe. My plan was initially only Italian within 6 months at 3-4 hours a day. @lafayettewatts7805 I did! Stopped before I finished level 3, as I concentrated way more on other resources. Great for pronunciation but the reason I find pimsleur more helpful for my Mandarin than russian was because of the tones and listening. Otherwise I felt I could learn russian more efficiently using resources outside of pimsleur. It's also been so long since I've used pimsleur russian, other resources have helped me a lot more due to russian being such a grammatically complex language, which I don't get the breakdown for in pimsleur. Pimsleur Portuguese is good! I started on lingq for it and felt like I really needed to build my oral after enough time even though I have some tutors. I really liked how it helped cement the written words I know into Oral and further long term. This coming from someone who completed all five levels of it. You might look at TalkArabic for more reading material for any extra language learning material, at least reading and I suspect audio as it covers Arabic dialects that are NOT just Egyptian or Saudi.

@@languagetraveladoptee Well I would say it ends at maybe low to mid intermediate. I don't remember everything but it will help establish past tense, conditional(would these actions) and I think it had future as well. At least one of the past irregulars it more firmly cements. I do think Pimsleur is more helpful in some of these grammar points. But if your complaint about Mandarin is that it gave you good building blocks in 1-3 but maybe not as much in 4 and 5 then maybe. I apologize I can't be exact because while I really think it helps I didn't come fresh out of it recently. Probably the ones I suspect would be the most telling of how far the Pimsleur method go are French which I believe Pimsleur himself fashioned. He may have first learned French first as well. I think he worked on Japanese. That being said if he worked on Russian I read a similar complaint to your Mandarin except in this case it was the voice which wasn't a native Russian after 3. The one Pimsleur I read to avoid was Egyptian Arabic which has a very poor voice which doesn't fit the accent at all.

@@languagetraveladoptee No problem and after looking at Italian after hearing Pimsleur Italian there is definite overlap and things being different. Italian and Spanish seem to be more alike as some things in Portuguese are definitely different. I said to someone it reminded me of French how some things are pronounced. Someone I know think called it "Drunk Spanish" or "French", can't remember which. I suggested it to said person because it was more difficult but for me that is more the idea of making things easier in general by then stepping down to Spanish. I was also curious about Portuguese because no one ever talks about it around my area. I will warn you it can be harder to find physical books in Portuguese in the US and importing them can be costly for no sensible reason.
