Why I Gave Up On a Total Gym

Фильм және анимация

I've heard numerous stories from many of you as to how you picked up a Total Gym (or other sliding bench trainer) only to barely use and let it collect dust. In this video I tell my own story of how I eventually lost faith or just stopped using my sliding bench trainer over the years and how I rediscovered it only to find it was the missing link in adhering to at home fitness. I'll go over my why I initially picked one up, my initial thoughts, why I stopped using it, why I was wrong, and how I resurrected its use to become essentially my sole form of resistance training.

Wow! It's so funny I was showing my wife the very first video you uploaded from 10 years ago. Basically to show her why I'm addicted to the Total Gym. I started out like you. Young, killing myself working out 5 days a week (sometimes 6) I'm 53 years old and it took me so many years of my life to realize how much damage I was creating on my body. I've been steady now with the Total Gym for around 8 years now. With over 30 years experience working out, I can honestly say the Total Gym is overall the best exercise machine to build and maintain my body in great condition. I love and enjoy watching all your videos and appreciate what your awesome channel does for me and your wonderful viewers. Thank you 😊

In 2010, I was 6'1, and weighed 300 pounds, and lost 110 pounds with a cheap Gold's' Gym bike and the absolute cheapest Total Gym. It was super rickety, and there wasnt even a weight bar attachment. I just piled books in my lap. I was just really, really motivated. -The most important equipment for losing weight is a determined, focused mind. 😊 But it would have been nice to have better stuff, yeah. 😅

I bought a weider ultimate body works machine about a month ago after watching several of your videos. I wanted to work out smarter being almost 39 and try to increase my flexibility. In that time, I’ve kept my incline about halfway and noticed more definition especially in my arms. I’ve used it every night except like 3 nights of the month I’ve had it. I only gave $100 for one that was still in really decent shape. People that say you can’t build muscle or at the very least maintain your size clearly aren’t using the equipment before judging it. I liked a line you said in another video. You are only limited by your own creativity when working out on sliding bench trainers. I know I’ve absolutely loved the convenience of not having to drive to the gym after work and deal with waiting to use equipment. I am convinced that body weight resistance is the smarter way to work out and see results while also being lower impact on your joints.

Every 3 to 6 weeks or so, it is good to take like a 10 day break from all anabolic type activity. It helps to reset and resensitize your m-Tor pathways and reactions. When people plateau, this is what helps best to get more gains again. It is sort of like restarting the whole "newbie gains" that weight lifters/body builders talk about (though obviously not quite as intense). If you go longer than 10 days, you'll start to lose some of the muscle and strength, but if you go shorter, the reset process won't happen. 10 days is the sweet spot between these.

I bought my total trainer maybe 30 years ago then got bored and mainly used for a clothes hanger. Then I got sciatica for.4 years. Luckily I stumbled on a workout with the total gym and it fixed me!!! 🎉🎉 I then got complacent again and sciatica returned. I started those exercises and while my back has been healing I found you. It has been great following your programs thank you so very much much. I hope you will continue with the total gym workouts . I have so enjoyed having the ability to to do safe workouts at home.

Thanks for the video! Your channel is really the only one I've ever watched for the sliding bench machines. I'm sure there are other channels available, but, never have needed to look elsewhere. I think you've mentioned this before, it also comes down to attitude....and the type of equipment a person wants to use as opposed to what is really needed. I'm still using a weider bodyworks and it challenges me.......of course, I'm into my fifth decade on this planet and no longer heavily involved in the physical activities of yesteryear, and the weider bodyworks is sufficient for me right now. Once it comes time to replace it, I'll definitely be picking up a TG. Again, thanks for keeping the channel alive!!

Got my first Total Gym a 1700 all the way back in 2004. I used it some at first but I guess I got kinda bored and the motivation was not there. So I stopped for a while. Then started using it again and one of the wheels broke. It sat for years until I fixed it. Fast forward to 2017. I started using my TG on a regular basis as I really wanted to get in better shape. I had seen firsthand what bad health and lifestyle choices can do to a person. Well my 1700 broke on me. Next day I broke my arm. After healing and thanks to FB I learned about the TG I had been wanting was at a good price at QVC. Bought it and got rid of all the old stuff and havent looked back. With all the workouts available online I can watch on my tv or tablet I have all the motivation I need. Not to mention Total Gym tv. Its at point now that I am kid in the candy store. Great vid

Great stuff.. a lot of people here could be too young to remember but when I was a teenager, one of the first exercise machine infomercials was for a product called Soloflex and of course I ordered it and yes, it ended up collecting dust. I used it for a few months and realized that it wasn't what it was made out to be and IMO it was a bit dangerous because it used small rubber resistance bands that the tougher the resistance to more dangerous is felt on the return. I ended up selling it and swore never to get conned by these types of exercise equipment and fast forward to 2020 during Covid when I purchased the Total Gym Fit through QVC and I haven't looked back since nor did I question myself for buying it, as the workouts I've gotten out of this have been great.

@@hybridresistance I don't even know if they sell the soloflex anymore. It's been such a long time but if I remember, it came with the bench, the stand, what you would consider the barbell and a fly attachment and I believe if you ordered it with the leg extension it cost more...they also added two plastic sleeves for curls and of course the resistance bands came with it. If you can find a used one on Ebay for cheap maybe you can get it to try it out but I think you'd be wasting your money. The flies attachment always felt like a shoulder injury waiting to happen, when you would do the bench press you had to kind of slide in between the barbell and the bench and that was annoying and then when you used say the 50 lb bands and the 100 lb bands it felt almost impossible to push up but your arms would shake on the way down because if felt like a slingshot. That being said, I would say their marketing for that time was amazing and you can find some of those informercials on youtube to see what I mean, these guys did a great job of selling the product at the time that's for sure.

A little while back, I saw a Pro Form S.B.T. on sale at B.J.'s. As I don't have a lot of extra spending money and space, I decided why not try it out. I also have some dumbbells. I don't like going to the gym--takes up a lot of time, I'm an introvert, don't like having to wait for equipment, it is a long term money drain, etc. I'm not looking to get "swole" jacked anyways, but just more fit, more muscular, and to lose some fat. I had been noticing in recent years (I'm now in my early 40's), how much easier it was to gain weight, and how much less energy I had. I figured if I lose excess fat (which extra muscle helps with), my testosterone will probably go up which will give me more energy. (I've also started taking natural supplements which allegedly help with increasing test naturally). Anyways, thanks for making these videos. I know a lot of bodybuilders and lifters probably laugh at this kind of machine, but I don't really care. This is about health/well being and not about ego and looks for me. Besides, with a combo of dumbbells and this machine, I think if you got everything else dialed in with diet, supplements, sleep, with decent to good genetics (which I'm lucky to have, in my youth I was naturally athletic, muscular, with high test), you can get decent sized, if you wanted to (again, not my goal, but I know it is a common one, especially of younger guys). I'm not yet at the point where I need to add extra weight/resistance beyond highest incline with the 4 resistance bands and/or doing one arm or leg stuff, but it looks like I can modify things to add extra weight or resistance. The only thing I don't like about this machine, is that doing leg stuff is somewhat challenging and limited.

Mike, just discovered your channel and it is awesome! I'm 53 years old...bought my first TG in 1996 (the 3000 infomercial model) and upgraded to the TG14000 in 2008. Admittedly, I haven't always been as consistent as I'd like to be, but I always come back to it one way or another. Although I've been using it pretty regularly the last 6 months, your site has inspired me to take it to the "next level". At my age staying toned, losing a little weight, and most importantly (imho) the STRETCH I get from the TG is what makes this machine an "all-around" winner. Question: What is that blue/teal piece between the carabiner and the handle? How does it help and where do you purchase? Thanks!!

I bought a Total Gym from Costco about 2000. I used it a few times and gave it to a neighbor who liked it. Now 20+ years later my wife purchased the XLS for me after 3 week of Corona. It has been my go to now even 2 1/2 years later. I add weights, slow down reps, go back and perform volume for a few months, and alternate. If you let it sit, it does not matter whether you are just doing body weight or adding another form of resistance.

I'm about to turn 75. Definitely don't have your physique (haha). Bought my first Total Gym in about 2000 and was on again/off again until about 8 years. But one of the welds finally broke in 2019 so I bought a new one. My goal is just to try to keep active, not worrying about bodybuilding at my age. I still work out about 5-6 days a week just to maintain strength and flexibility. Just had my annual physical this week and my doctor was so proud of my exercise plan and encouraged me to keep up the physical activity. (BP and Cholesterol were in the safe range. Dad had extremely high cholesterol and mom had high BP). Love my Total Gym! Also use a recumbent bike. Both of these are easy to use and take up less than 1/2 of a small bedroom in the house. Thanks for your videos and giving us new ideas on how to use the TG!

I was actually looking for an inexpensive barbell and weights when an ad for the total gym came up. Long story short, in my recently vacated spare bedroom I made what you me is a complete gym! I have dumbbells, barbell, resistance bands, balancing devices and the total gym. Due to my destroyed joints I have to be careful working out. I also have found that it's better to do sets spaced apart, so having a room set up in my home enables me to improve my condition without reinjuring my joints. I thought I would build up quickly and stagnant but that's been far from my experience. There are so many ways to change up the workouts to force your body to adapt. I expected to enjoy the total gym, but I didn't expect it to be so useful. I leave everything set up in that bedroom but I had to empty the room for the carpet cleaners and discovered that it folds and fits in the closet, so I can still have company stay in that room.

Whenever I stop using my total gym for a period of time, and then use it I'm incredibly sore for a few days. So I know the total gym trains you in ways free weights can't

Anyone who feels they're to strong for the total gym, just do all your pushing and pulling with the cable disconnected and you will be humbled. If that doesn't get your attention try one limb at a time.

Great reverse psychology. Thought you were going to rip the TG. I have had my TG 1100 for I think over 20+ years. Just replaced the rollers (third time). I love my TG. My workout needs to start where I stand. Love the home gym concept. Turning 65 this month. Don't want to be a gym rat. 20-30 min combo TG, pushups and sit ups for 3-4 times a week is my golden ticket!

I'm at a place in my life where not much is familiar. I'm 42 I work a lot. I'm not home every night to go to my favorite gym in town. I had surgery to reattach my bicep tendon in 2020 and haven't been able to get in my full swing of my old usual routine of lifting weights 3 to 4 days a week I've always been a pretty strong dude. Naturally strong but I'm getting older and those years off of the gym is not done me any good I have very early stages of arthritis in my spine I have a left knee that's wearing out. And I'm having to do things a lot differently I had like you mentioned owned a total gym in the past used it for a little bit it was upper body beneficial for sure but did not a lot for my lower body. I'm a prison guard and I stay at the prison almost 24/7 for a good length of time about half the month and I don't have access to a gym I'm seriously considering purchasing another Total gym and giving it a try I have to build my body back up

Thanks for sharing that brother. I hear you about aging, but at least we can be comforted knowing that we'll all have to work around it in some fashion. Obviously I'm biased, but given your situation a Total Gym would an ideal option for fitting in and staying consistent with resistance training. Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can be of more help.

I am turning 69, ex high school/ college/ semi pro football player that stopped doing anything physical at about 50. Just got the TG for myself and wife to gain strength age is robbing from us. Love the TG, 3 weeks in. I noticed your grips, they seem to make life a little easier and provide a better grip. Is it worth the extra bucks? I say yea, wife no. What say you? Thanks. @@hybridresistance Thanks for the reply. I was referring to the wire grips you use on the main tower pulley, instead of the heavy stock rubber grip the TG comes with. They seem to work so much better for you than the bulky rubber grips. The reviews on Amazon for it seem be almost 5 stars. They cost $40 bucks. They seem like they would be easier to use for my wife’s smaller hands. Think they are major improvement. Thanks!!

Used to work for 5 sports retailers during the 90's - we had something similar at Olympus Sport, it was £299, and everyone hated the thing - it didn't sell. The issue I found when using it is the lack of leg exercises eg: it's restricted to a few squat moves and that's your lot. Very limited and not good for a novice where their muscles aren't developed enough for calisthenics, and you cannot body build as this requires extra weight to truly work the body, so you'll still end up paying for a gym membership anyway.

The yellow/gray one I bought after my blk/blue one broke. I have a full gym at home in basement but also go to an outside gym. Nothing better than having ur own gym. But that doesnt mean u cant still belong to an outside gym. I do highly recommend the Total Gym!!!

Giving up on any exercise device is common as some people buy a device thinking the device will make exercise more enjoyable, easier or convenient - at the end of the day some will find it is still work and if you don’t have the motivation it will not matter. A cheap pair of push up bars or an entire million dollar gym still needs consistency and determination.

I am discovering now that Tabata workouts are also quite possible on a TG. The key is learning a few compound exercises, which the TG lends itself to really well! One of the things I like to do is set up an attachment and do my rounds by switching “moves” using that attachment with it’s potential connection points (hands, feet etc) and angles.

@@hybridresistance yeah I’ve been impressed for $100 I have a piece of equipment that keeps my arms looking like I’ve been to the gym. Gives me a really good workout and leaves me sweating like I was in a gym. These sliding bench trainers are an underrated secret. Because they are perfect to work out more in your home and see results. The key is consistency. Which the problem for most is they don’t use it then it collects dust. If you use it can easily keep you toned and in shape
