Why I Finally Switched to Sony…(Goodbye Canon)

In this video, I really want to go over why I finally left Canon and switched to Sony after almost 6 years. When looking to upgrade cameras, I went with the Sony A7IV over the Canon R6 MkII, and here's why...

I have the same reason as you too... Sold my 80D & lenses, & Im switched to A7iii. bought couple of sigma lenses 35 1.4 DGDN, 85 1.4 DGDN & 28-70 2.8 DGDN. I am super happy. Sigma lenses are great for value.
Congrats Josh and welcome aboard ! I think you made an awesome decision for the long run !

That IBIS is not a problem anymore since firmware 1.6. Also the overheating got fixed with that update on the R5. I have the R5 which I bought after owning 2 A7S3’s. Honestly they are both great in there own ways. If the A7S3 had 33mp it would literally be the perfect camera. I didn’t go for the A74 because it has overheating issues. I do really like Sony and Canon. The IBIS on the R5 is so good that I find myself reaching for it more. That being said my A7SIII has micro jitters but on most shots can be fixed in Catalyst Browse. It think you would have been fine even if you chose the R6. They do have very expensive lenses but that is about to change. They are opening up for 3rd party. Sigma will be the first. Good video on your experience.

I make recommendations as if a good friend asked me for advice. If someone getting into filmmaking asked me what to spend their hard earned money on, Sony has a lot of great options at the moment (most brands have good options). If you've watched my channel before, you know I've got no problem roasting products that let me down, and promoting products that exceed my expectations. I'm just a guy sharing his thoughts.
I was gonna get the Canon R5 but then the third party lens thing just killed it for me. Ended up with the Sony A7RV instead and super happy with it.

That was exactly the primary reason I chose Sony over Canon. Both great systems but a great camera should have a great lens and there were so many more options for that with the Sony.
Yeah! I am waited this so long. 😅
You also have APSC pro options like the FX30 and a6700. 3 Used third party lenses for these are 1000€
doesnt sound like a camera decision, more like a camera compromise. Glad at least you learnt about apsc lenses on FF with the crop (and clear image zoom).

I've bought over half of my gear over the past 6 or so years used, open-box, or refurbished and never had any issues come up. Obviously, this is just MY experience, so I can't guarantee anything. Often sites like Amazon and B&H have used gear with a nice little discount and sometimes even come with 30-day warranties. Usually, sites like eBay, Craigslist, and Facebook marketplace have even better deals, but no warranty. If you can test out the gear and inspect it that's always best!

I've been using my Canon gear for 10+ yrs counting but I had existing FD & EF glass so EF-m adapting was easy & now the new Nikon F to EF-m w/ full Auto communication. I agree, I chose to stay on the Canon side for my video but been long time Nikon for film & digital still.
Is the IBIS on Sony good? I'm considering moving to Sony a7iv myself. What's holding me back is the stabilization since i shoot a lot handheld.
@JoshWiniarski

It pretty much eliminates ALL of the micro jitters that come from using non-stabilized lenses on a small mirrorless camera. Combine it with their digital stabilization (only if you want to) for even steadier shots. For me this adds a lot of value.

No view finder you are stuck with the screen.
Have you noticed any differences in colour science, I mean the colours straight out of cameras and how flexible they are during your edits? I'm thinking to switch from R6 to A7 IV because of wobble IBIS and 3rd party lenses ban, but I afraid that raw files will take more time to edit because of the colours.
@JoshWiniarski
2 ай бұрын
I find that on the A7 IV my image tends to look a tad green. When setting the white balance in camera I add .25 magenta and it completely fixes the issue without touching it in the edit. The color is different, but since switching I've never personally missed "Canon colors." I think with the earlier Sony cameras there was a big difference, but nowadays it's very close.

I thought the wobble was fixed with the MK II, that’s good to know
The problem with the EF lenses is exactly that autofocusing noise. I also thought I'd be buying EF lenses, but after using the famous sigma 18-35mm f1.8 on APS-C, I am like: can't use this lens for video, the nonstop noise just ruins the whole thing.

I feel like not enough people talk about that on KZread, but it's a real issue! It always just felt like one more thing to worry about for me.
I don't even care about gear anymore I've over it. I get it people get into gear when they are new. But learn the gear you have master it and then get new gear if you really have the money to buy it. Photography as a hobby is worse then video games when it comes to spending money.
I did the exact same thing. No regrets at all.
I’m a hobbyist photographer who travels often enough. I sold my Nikon gear 5 years ago and want to get back into it. I’ve been researching on whether to go Canon or Sony. I’m leaning to Canon because I like the ergonomics and ease of use. I don’t plan to go professional and I don’t have a strong negative opinion on the RF-EF adapters. Body budget is around $1300 so that puts me around the R8 or A7III. There’s a lot of Canon/Sony switchers on KZread but it feels like an iPhone vs Android for me. I’m looking to only get 4 lenses on either system: 50mm 85mm 70-200mm 24-70mm Optional 18-35mm.

Suggested Canon R6 MKII - with RF to EF adapter, collect (L) series lenses you listed. Canon EF L series glass works well on adapter mirrorless cameras. or Lumix S5II
I was around when Sony started after buying Minolta and had some lenses for the FE from the E. I also was a Canon user from the 70's film and the Canon digital in the 2000's till 2013 when I went Sony in 2014. There are things you missed so a little history before the video era. Well the video era did start but better. First the A7 series started in 2013 with mod 1 where the A7SM1 came with on camera apps you could buy , brackening 5@ +/- 3EV (HDR days), the C1 for $30, ISO 50 to 409,600 and 4K video but the 2014 brought IBIS but also the main starting of video BUT not one book to show how even to this day, a secret bright monitoring I assign to the trash can button. About IBIS I captured Antelope Canyon 3 and 5 @ +/- 2EV handheld while all others used tripods. about ISO I captured the depth of the Grand Canyon at night and Milky Way together. When the A7 line came out there also were lens adapters $20 made by many companies so I could use all my lenses from Canon film days and digital days, I took the Nov. 2014 lunar eclipse with a film 100-300 lens also in 2015 June my first MW using a Sony E 10-18mm (15-27mm) f/4 OSS APS-C but in Full Frame mode at 12mm f/4 but was also fit the FE mount. Your first lenses 12-24mm f/4, 24-240mm OSS and 16-35mm great for macro for close focusing. No need for f/1.4, 1.8 or 2.8 for higher ISO and focusing with small square in AF you will get great bokeh even with the 24-240.
This is so true, spot on i was so close to buying canon r8 then the lens selection messed me up.. I rather get better value from the 3rd party lenses than sticking with canon. plus canon is better if your primiarly doing photos and not video. I'm a big video guy.. !
after buying over 6 canons, i am switching to Sony too canon is very easy to use but content creators like me always lack in some area there is always some Android app, record limits, battery charging, and live streaming issues. let alone rf expensive lenses. i don't why canon does not let you use their camera to full capacity? every canon camera is crippled in some way in the other hand Sony zv e10 has options that even Sony doesn't know how to use but there are options at least 😄😄 thank you for your video love from iran❤❤🌹🌹
Congrats on the new Sony camera! If you haven't tried it yet, I'm a big fan of Catalyst Browse software, which stabilizes video footage in post using the video gyrodata recorded by Sony cameras. Almost indistinguishable from footage using a gimbal. Definitely try it out if you haven't already.

Yeah there are things I miss about Canon, but MAN do I love this camera so far! I haven't been this excited about gear in years!
1:11 i completely agree, the main reason im considering switching as well
The problem a7iv...rolling shutter and overall 4k60 crop vs canon r6 or r6mk2
Just use what you want to use, i feel like a lot of people are looking at too much. Different brands have their strongpoints but it all goes down to preference. Sony: Advantages: Low light performance Dynamic Range Features Amazing Autofocus Disadvantages Colors(I know it can be fixed in post, but such a pain) Overheating Updates Canon Advantages Colors Lenses(Canon has, well had subjectively better lenses than Sony i mean 85mm 1.2etc) Imagine even RED uses Canon lenses by default that must mean they are doing something right. Amazing Autofocus Disadvantages Crippling Lenses are expensive, also no third party well now they are allowing Sigma but thats that. IBIS not that great Not great Dynamic Range Panasonic Advantages Packed with insane features like a lot of features Much more affordable Best IBIS Disadvantages Poor Autofocus
Nice video. For me, spending over $2k for either canon or Sony models is over my budget. My budget is under $1k to include lens. I am newbie in photography and to use tif or raw 8:07 pictures to manipulate as a hobby. I am considering Samsung s23 ultra phone for is camera capturing. Could you comment please?

I have some Canon EF gear but i want to go mirrorless. I'll wait until 2025. If Canon isn't opening the RF mount I'll go with Sony or Fujifilm X mount, both Sony and Fujifilm X have fully open mount to third party lens makers. Nikon only allow third party lenses in a controlled way, not fully open.

Adapt your EF lenses onto a Canon mirrorless. That’s what I did when I purchased a Canon R6MKII. I purchased the RF 50mm and will add a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 (L) II. My EF Sigma lenses work well on my R62. The EF lenses don’t lose any functionality and some got better on the R62. There are thousands of EF lenses that are super sharp and much cheaper than RF lenses. I would say, calculate what it will cost to replace all of your equipment to Sony. I don’t have anything against Sony. I recently purchased a Sony a6400 and it’s amazing. You can get the better Canon L series lenses and adapt them onto your mirrorless Canon. Now, depending on what you do, you can’t beat the newest top of the line Sonys. Just consider how much it’s going to cost switching platforms. I use an RF to EF adapter that has the adjustable ND filter cartridge. No more ND filters mounted onto the lenses.

Well canon its not everyone.
Will disagree with Neil here. The Bible used a lot of "metaphors" to describe events that will happen in the future. "Stars falling out of the sky" in Revelations is not in a literal sense. Also if people keep saying that Science and Bible cannot agree, the old scriptures already taught that the earth was round. "He who sits on top of the circle of the earth ..." "He, whose throne sits on top of the round earth" - Isaiah 40:22
Nikon's got exactly the same dynamic range as Sony and has the 3rd party lens options ( tamron 17-28, 28-75 and 75-180). why must the stereotype be only sony? FujiFilm. Panasonic, Olympus and Blackmagic are other good options
Canon is now allowing some 3rd party RF lenses. I may stay with canon a little longer with the release of that R100. It’s not the best but I don’t need the best. The affordability of it can’t be beat. I will wait until all the reviews are in before buying. Maybe it will be junk and not worth it 😂
