Hey Pierre. I am going to try to print some shots of mine soon! You're vid popped up after I have been getting a lot of people telling me I should print them! I never thought about it, always wanted to sell my pics but never thought I was good enough. Your videos have been helping me get better and apparently people like what I shoot! Thank you so much for all the tips and insight
The “worse” the camera, the more it forces you to work with it. I would love to have the latest A7R or the A1 but I don’t need it, and file management gets pretty hectic with higher file sizes (which means more money spent on ssd drives and better computers etc.) Great video as always.
I edited 1000 DNG iPhone 12 photos because of you and the passion you gave me. You are my biggest inspiration over all photographers! These 1k was edited with your style - “some saturation but still natural”. My fav POV is about one guy from the winter season (blizzard POV 3 hours). I’m really thank with all my heart you inspired me. I’m waiting for iPhone POV 🙂

I actually ran into this with my calendar this year. I shot on my a7siii and ended up with a 4MB image for and 11x17 calendar. There was severe degradation and I had redo the calendar as the image just fell apart. Still love my a7siii and will just be more careful with both shooting and editing.
The 85mm 1.4 is all I ever shoot with tbh, I would like a wider lense, but it's just soooo nice for everything (except macro). Have you ever thought about doing a video of using 35mm film scanner? Idk if you enjoy film or not but it would be really neat seeing you process the stuff yourself.

I've both A7 s an A7R and so far, no worries about print size, juste flexibility of sensitivity. The R is ok for crop solutions, 7S is good for making a " classic" shoting and probably more classic shooting...

I also found myself shooting a lot of stills with the A7SIII and I think it's a great still camera too. It's a little slow in burst mode but as you telled, it's great to focus on what you really whant to have in frame. I also wouldn't mind having 24Mpx like I previously had with my A6300 but that's not a big deal and I see no reason for having more.

High MP are totally unnecessary for street shooting. It's much more important for wildlife (cropping) and landscape (uncropped detail). Even that has limits in terms of improving visible image quality. 45 is plenty. 61 is marginally better, but anything over 50 MP in a FF camera is about bragging rights rather than IQ.

@@cristibaluta Obviously, detail retention is important. That's the whole point. You can only get so close to many animals, especially to birds. And with some wildlife you wouldn't want to get too close. I have a 100-500mm zoom and I get as close as I can. Unless the subject is extremely close, I'll still have to crop some. And that's where I need more MP, so I lose MINIMAL detail if I have to crop.

18mp here 🗿i always be a joke when i bought 18mp canon to the community, because they all have a7,a6400😂
You can absolutely print a 12mp image in most common household print sizes. I don't know too many people that have very large prints beyond 18" x 24" which a 12mp can handle easily. I shoot on both the a1 and a7Siii and yes my photo camera is obviously the a1 but the biggest advantage in mp comes from the crop in wildlife shooting or reframing to tweek an image. People tend to forget you can't pinch zoom in and pixel peep on a printed image hahaha That being said, I shoot all my professional shots with the a1 simply because every detail matters when you are promoting your business!

I’m kinda in love with that thumbs up pic
I had a 10mp Sony A200 and my print vendor wouldn't let me use the photos for prints because the resolution/files were too low. I used the same crop-sensor lens on a Sony a7R III (with a crop sensor, I'm only at 17mp), it was good enough for the printer. At only 17mp, I can print up to about 75".
You can also lower the megapixel count on your a1.. all the way down to 11. Throw on a diffuser and it’s great for taking pix of friends.
I am not concerned I shoot photography all the time with my a7siii such a great camera all around. I also shoot with an a7c and super solid as well. Great video and thoughts.
I shoot stills with an s3 and with the lens choices I have it takes excellent photos. There is a cult hype wagon influenced by KZread creators that makes a large group think culture of megapixel count equals quality. Idk if I worded that right but is what it is.

Yeah we test a lot of gear so it’s easy for us to get caught - at the end of the day it’s all about how you shoot - especially nowadays that 98% of cameras are hood
It’s never bad to have a lot of megapixels. Not necessary but not bad. I personally went from a 5DIV to an EOSR6 knowing I was significantly downgrading in image quality but it’s still doable and I have all of the cool mirrorless features.

im new to cameras, why does that lead to a downgrade in IQ?
If I don't do heavy cropping I can't tell difference between Canon R6 and Sony A7R iv. I actually preferred the Canon photos and thus sold the A7R iv. The RAW file sizes were insane!!!!
I shot wedding anniversarry with a7siii and people loved it. People overestimate needed gear by mile. What you actually need is good lens. It doesn’t mean it has to be gm though. Just that gm g lenses are more guaranteed to be consistent (they are more like buy and don’t care kind of lenses, unlike others where you need to extenaive test to know if you got good or shitty copy). I had samyang 24mm 2.8 and it was pretty good for half of my needs but it failed after a few months. Probably if it wouldnt i would still have it but i bought 16-35 gm and 20 g and damn those are solid. Now getting my feet into anamorphic
You have some good points, but as someone who is stuck with a 9.1 MP Sony dsc-hx1, I can clearly say there is a limit. It got some great zoom, so there is no need to crop the photo afterwards because I got everything in the frame I wanted. Still, all photos I make are too pixilated to be used as a notebook wallpaper. If that wouldn't be enough some photos get too pixilated to be even called pretty. I don't know how photos look like with 12MP, but my next camera definitely will have some higher resolution.

I used to have a 12mp DSLR, Nikon D700, and it was great! But I switched to the D610 because I wanted 24mp. Back then I sold prints via DeviantArt and the only way to sell the biggest prints was to have high resolution images. Even if the prints would have been fine with 12mp, the system didn’t allow it. Since then I’ve had 16mp, another 24mp, a 26mp and a 33mp camera. What I’ve learned is that I really love the ability to crop. That’s why I like higher resolution. But 24 and 26mp has been enough for me tbh. I got the 33mp because of other reasons than the resolution itself.
1:06 Definition is the amount of pixel that you have in x and y dimension (e.g. 1920*1080) whereas the resolution is the amount of pixel per surface unit (e.g. 400 Pixels Per Inch [PPI]). Tho in your example it deosn't matter much because the sensors have the same size so increased definition also means increased resolution.
Hi Pierre, you missed some of the interests of higher MP sensors. Firstly, when you crop it's basically like having a smaller sensor, but if you use APS-C cropping with the A7S III you stay with a 5MP APS-C, ask many photographers who owned FF DSLR for landscapes/weddings/reports...and APS-C for wildlife/sports... with the A1 you have both in one package, 50MP FF and 20MP APS-C and even almost 12MP micro 4/3. Sure if you have a A7 IV it's 33MP FF and 15MP APS-C, it could be still enough, but you don't have the A1 AF, EVF, 30fps, stacked sensor...cameras are not only defined by their resolutions, and most of the time bodies with higher res are also bodies with better features. And now you can make videos about the interest (or not) in having better EVF, better AF, more fps...you'll see that Megapixels are not the only "biggest problem in marketing" ^^, because in most case you probably don't want or need 30fps, 4K120p, 9M dots EVF, trains and planes recognitions...or even a Full Frame (you really need it? REALLY?! it could also be "a great marketing tool" 😁) Then welcome to the digital world, most of people look at your pictures on screens, not prints, and it's a fact that they offer more and more pixels (as longingbydesign said, for his screen 12MP is not enough because it covers only 60% of his screen without digital zoom, imagine when he will have a 8K screen...). Finally, when you buy great lenses as yours, built to support high res and 30fps, it's like buying an 8K projector and watching VHS. As long as you watch on a 3" screen it's ok but when you"ll buy a big 100" you'll say "damn I should have at least bought 4K Blurays" 😊. It's exaggerated but you got the point.
Quick question. If I had a 19x13 in. sized image when I exported, can that image still get enlarged for print at whatever printing service you pick? I’m not sure if I worded that right 😂. Thanks in advance
My a7rm3 was a breath of fresh air after shooting low res bodies. It's old, but gets the job done.
Pierre! I'm spending a few days in Chicago. Is the Magnificent Mile good for photography? Where else do you recommend?
I had an rp months back fell out of photography and got back in with a canon r7 people don’t like crop sensors but I seem to get the exact shots I need . Maybe later down the road I’ll buy a second body that’s full frame
i got an old A77. Befor that i was shooting with an A57. Sometimes i felt pretty limited by the MP, but i stil like my cam.
i’ll take it if you don’t want it. i shoot on a canon rebel t6 and saving for a much needed upgrade lol

The reason 12 MP is not enough for me is my Pro Display XDR. A 12 MP photo only covers ~60% of my screen at 100%, so I can't even use my photos as a wallpaper without digital zoom.

Amazing time
I took heat for getting a D800 when it came out. Nobody needed 36 mega pixels. I only got it so that I could freely crop wildlife photos.
Totally agree with the 12MP. First I had a Sony Alpha 7s II (found it damn cheap on aftermarked) and I still like the Images and filezise more than my Sony Alpha 7 IV. OFC is the AF and stuff like this much better. But if I had a Sony Alpha 7S III i would use it the most xD. Sometimes i shoot 2000-4000 raw pictures a day. Another KZreadr did a test with small and large prints, comparing the A7SIII with a 100 MP medium format camera. They looked nearly identical and sometimes the A7SIII prints were sharper. With that said, I think my ex bought the A7R V for me for Christmas lol, can't complain.

12MP is good but a bit lacking if you need to crop in to a photo to improve the composition. But megapixel count definitely tells nothing about quality at all. A7C’s 24MP FF sensor looks perfect for me.
I used to care about mega pixels but now I only care about lens haha, ordered the zeiss 50mm 1.4 so excited!!
Yes i like to have more mega pixels, somewhere from 40 to 60 would be my range of choice.
Wait what, people rely on the crop, that's why they shoot high Mp? I never ever think like that but i do crop if necessary. I like the high Mp because the image looks much better after resize comparing to a lower Mp. The max i have is 24 though. My Olympus 16Mp doesn't look that nice in comparison, the iPhone i don't even want to mention, there are too many wrong things with it.
Thx PL

Hi, how would I enhance my shots? Edit: Around timestamp 2:06
For me, a great lens is more important than the amount of megapixels
I still shoot my 12mp Canon 5D classic and my 6mp Nikon D40
I find making a big deal about this is funny. Its like do I need a 600hp lambogrhini or is a 350hp audi ok? Its like any other product. Do you shoot landscape? Do you want to make life size prints?.....then of course MP makes a difference and even more so if the sensor is bigger. You should make a video that stresses how to research for the right camera....that IMO makes more sense.
Megapixels only matter if you are working with a big design or fashion brand, it matter in order to improve your sellings with marketing. However the client might prefer a 100mp archive to have more information and the chance to crop or make huge prints, but in full frame more pixels doesn’t mean more quality. The difference comes when you jump from full frame to medium format (I dream with buying a Hasselblad camera, but to be fair I couldn’t use it well because I just take photos as a hobby and I am not a mega rich person… yet lol)

Billboards are viewed from so far away that they don't need to be really high resolution.

Shh, don't tell everyone about the pixels! haha IME it depends on the sensor, some of these low pixel count sensors give wonderful images --- and the best part is some of them are cheap!
I've been using several camera for street photography of the last few years. Lately the a6600 24mp sensor has been great for performance, print resolutions, and portability I can more easily get closer to my subject as well. I used to go out with my a7r2 but that was a bit too much in the winter time and standing there with a huge camera can make people move away from my shot lol. Personally, I think 12mp is a minimal needed if you don't plan on doing any extreme cropping, something like the original fujifilm x100.
people have printed 4x6ft photos at less than 12mp and they have tons of detail. Before 12mp was a thing, people were doing that. 12mp is plenty plenty for prints,
Flip screen is must have in 2022. And A1 no have.
Not overly concerned with pixel count, just wanting to get the sharpness I know is there. Bought a A6000 as a first camera and using my Dad's old Minolta AF lenses with an adapter. Just going to keep at it and get the fundamentals down. I'm sure the rest will come. Thanks for the tips in this vid. As always you are extremely helpful.
if we look at analog photography, films are not more than 2mp so to me we don't need to go further
i challenge you to use a canon t7 rebel or 2000D in europe name
You can set your A1 to put out lower megapixels so this is a bit of a weird flex.
I print photos from my a7siii and my 20mp drone shots 😂
Mostly it's about the lens. If you have a sharp quality lense, megapixels aren't that important.
Missing shot on 22:36 ^^
alpha sv ??
Personally, I use the A1 but I only shoot JPEG and I have selected the "S" file size (12 MP). I only shoot in APS-C mode. I always use a 5-stop ND filter to make sure the ISO is through the roof. If you think you need pictures with low noise, you are a noob - it's better to shoot images full of noise and then remove it later. By doing all this, I feel like more like an artist, which is super nice! Also, I always disable auto focus and image stabilization on my GM lenses, which is more "pure" and "true". Highly recommend it! Also, it makes you a bit of a contrarian, which can fool many into thinking you're "deep". Please try it, it will transform your picture taking forever! PS: Using flip screens if of course a no-go and not artist-like at all. Shouldn't do it. It makes you lazy relying on that type of tech. And of course, shooting in RAW is an absolutely no-go.
