Yes you should definitely tan his hide and keep it as a memento as your last Silver Fox! Part of me is a little sad to see them go but now that I have my own breeding program for Silver Fox I can put my own energy into them and cheer you and your cremes on! Hi Tiffany! I never reached out before, but I felt I had to this time. I learned about your channel and the Livestock Conservancy last year when I was looking into starting my own rabbitry. I am starting with American Chinchillas because they were listed as Threatened. I was supposed to have my first litter by now, but something must have happened because the due date came and went without any babies. Now I just have a fat doe! Haha! Anyway, your build videos helped me plan my own hutch setup for my 5 starter rabbits. I'm still working out the kinks, but I appreciate your help along the way.

When we started our Rabbit breeding journey we found your KZread channel and started with Silver Foxes because of your passion for the breed. Since then we have met Sherielu and Brittany and many others at shows and consider them good friends. We are still working on our Silver Foxes but lately have been drawn into New Zealands. We are very excited about our Next generation of Rabbits and as long as they excite us we will stay with them. We had a Black Senior Silver Fox doe place in the top 20 at Convention and were thrilled about that. I never dreamed that I would be so smitten by Rabbits, but I am. Thanks for your part in leading us on our Journey. We have made friends we would not have made without it and we are very appreciative for that.

I have watched your show videos but didn't get much into on where to find shows and how to know what to do. I am starting out with silver foxes. Do I have to join a club to breed? where do I find shows in my area and how to know how to get them ready? any info would be great. the videos I watched did not tell me where to go to start showing.

Tiffany I am very impressed with the aesthetics of your homestead. That is my goal as well when I move to Tenn. and start my own homestead. I met a breeder who suggested I raise Tamuks due to high summer temps. Your crème d’argents are beautiful though. I am learning as much as I can from you before then. You have been amazing. Would you consider a video on showing us your property, all your animal pens, barns , enclosures? There are so many ways to do things. I am also a fan of passing on tips and tricks other people have not figured out. Love all your painted rabbit hutches.

I am very sad to see you sale out of the Sliver Fox. They were one of the reasons I got into watching your Channel. BUT I am glad you are going forward and getting more into what you love. I wont leave your channel just cause you got out of the sliver fox. I am getting into rabbits for meat. I got some Rex's that will hopefully be able to breed soon. Watching your vids I have learned ALOT and it will help me into moving forward as well :).

Looking to build a hutch and purchase a breeding trio soon. Wear did you order your 1/2”x1 flooring wire. The plastic coated stuff

My plan revolves around Champagne D'Argent, Creme D'Argent, and Silver Foxes. Their coats are absolutely stunning with their pale fur tips. I'm looking into the general Rex and Flemish Giant. They'd be devoted meat consumption does/crosses. I also plan on Harlequins, and they may become a priority considering the Livestock Conservancy. I have a lot of time on my hands while I'm new to rabbitry, and therefore don't show. It's what allows me to be so broad in my breed interests. However, my animal husbandry extends for years on my off-grid homestead, and while other livestock like my cattle and swine are hands-off, rabbitry is unique and more personal in a lot of ways. I enjoy it very much.

Glad found your channel live in northern Ohio. Building rabbit cages nice set up to harvest 200 pounds year or more. Plain on having set up first then find rabbits to buy. Looking for breeder to get good stock . Any help would be appreciated

Do you have a video on how to pick your potential keep backs or your heavy culling process. I breed Rex and would like to do a better job at allowing better type only to be breeders. I mean do you just cull all except the best? What about parts rabbits?

I love your cremes! I'm personally a huge genetics nerd so I want a rabbit breed where I can mess around with color more but if it weren't for that I would be jumping on the cremes! Helping develop some new silver fox colors could be fun but I live in a climate that's too hot for them...

My wife and I raise rabbits (her: dwarf varieties for show/pets, me: TAMUKs for meat). I can't imagine trying to merge those two objectives in a single herd! Must be a lot of work!

I've had new Zealand white Californian,s chinchilla lots more live in uk starting with English after long absence from rabbits, as.a kid in England I had English and Dutch rabbits later my father emigrated to South Africa where after few years I had a Rabbitry mostly new Zealand white and Californian also chinchilla and new Zealand red / black lived there 18 years before coming back to England

What is the best way you think to dispatch?

Now, this would be amazing satinized if that creme guard hair would come up. Hmm..... Ideas. Not that I need another genetics project! LOL

Silver Fox have the highest percentage of meat compared to body weight at 67% dress out weight. Larger breeds have larger bones so the percentage of meat is less. Might want to go pure SF.

Hard to visualize tanning rabbit pelts. How are the pelts used? Are they difficult to tan at home?

Normally you tan them with the fur on, not like leather from cattle. I have seen winter hats and slippers made from them, but if you are willing to sew multiple pelts together, you could certainly do blankets etc.

A little bit colder... fortiees and fiftees...you mean summer?

I'm looking at a meat breed suitable to central FL, heritage breed would be nice, but I just want a rabbit that will be comfortable with our warm & humid climate. there are Cotton tails around, so something should work out. any recommendations?

Cottontails are not the same as our domestic rabbit. Our rabbits originated from european rabbits. I know several breeders that have Creme d’argents in Florida.

Sorry if this is too basic a question, something we should already know if our climate isn't extreme (I suspect "Florida White" has value for heat/humidity and possibly disease tolerance rather than pure productivity in terms of reproductive fecundity and grow out rate), but how would you rate Creme de Argents and Silver Foxes against the meat standards like California and New Zealand White. I can't imagine myself getting into the business/hobby of exhibiting them (that might change with kids and 4H as a possible education resource, but as a bachelor, that's not on the horizon), and while I can appreciate a beautiful animal, I don't take rabbit fur (except for felting?) very seriously, since I had bought a pelt as a kid when my parents were buying sheepskins as chair cushions, and thus came to realize that even commercial rabbit skins shed fur like a (living) cat does, rather than lasting a long time (like the sheep pelts and presumably the traditional furbearers like actual fox or weasels). The pelt of a young animal (the most economical and tender stage to harvest for meat if breeding isn't a goal being when they just reach mature size or just before they start to fight over mating, whichever comes first) will almost certainly be more fragile and thus have limited avenues for non-compost use (pillow stuffing?). So I anticipate caring first about climate, then meat productivity, ie fecundity and rapid growth.

A tanned rabbit pelt would only shed if it was not properly done. It’s called slipping and usually means it has been over-processed. If breed, look, or temperament is not a concern and you are just going for meat-producing abilities, I would recommend New Zealand.

@@laikaaardwolf3177 yeah exactly, it's a mix of six or seven breeds that isn't it's own breed. And yes, they are *more* heat tolerant (though that doesn't mean they do well in 80+ weather...they just tolerate it a bit better). TAMUK stands for "Texas A&M University - Kingston", where the mix was developed.

Stands for Texas A&M @Kingsville which is the college that developed the TAMUK composite. They have traits that make them desirable for meat production in hot climates including thinner hair, big ears, high growth rate and docile personalities. I’ve added them into my rabbitry here in Texas after that awful summer and so far I’m impressed with how well they are doing.

Teal, I advise against rabbits freedom on the ground, with only a fence. In nature, they dig tunnels and you will lose control over them, with inability to separate them per sexes, with bucks killed by the does, with loses because they will break out through tunnels, and many litters lost to predators outside the fence. If you still want to do it, the fence must be able to keep the babies inside, and, at around 60 centimeters in the ground, you have to have a floor of mesh, connected to the fence. I mean, you still have natural dirt where they like to dig, but unable to escape. I'm telling you this from my experience. I guess you will transition completely to goats if your property can sustain the number of goats you need for that, and keep a nucleus or two of rabbits, ready to start again if there are problems with goats...

You should not house a buck with the does. You need to keep the buck separated with his wether friend at all times when not actively breeding. This is especially important for Nigerian Dwarf goats.

Before I bought my first rabbit, I knew I wanted to focus on only rare breed rabbits on livestock conservancy. Our homestead focuses on American Blue, Silver Fox, and American Chinchillas. Silver fox are definitely a great homestead rabbit or pet.
