WHY I DON'T PAY RENT (10 Years Living in a Van Off the Grid)

WHY I DON'T PAY RENT (10 Years Living in a Van Off the Grid)
For the last 10 years I've being living off the grid. Not paying rent it has its perks but living in a van full time is far from being comfortable. Living an unconventional lifestyle is not the norm, some people might not understand why you live the way you do. Some of us do it for economic reasons, some others for the feeling of freedom that gives them. There is no one solid answer on why people lives in a van, but in this video I share the reasons why I live for this long a nomadic lifestyle instead of paying rent.

Living full time in vehicles for over 10 years and this is what I have to say about it. I feel there is not too many people here on KZread being fully transparent about why they live in a van and I felt the need to share why I truly live a nomadic lifestyle instead of a conventional one. Would you live in a van like me for this long? Or do you think that I am crazy?

Hey Lidia, Just discovered your channel and just finished watching your "starting over at 33" video. I wanted to point you towards EFT ("Emotional Freedom Techniques") for your trauma. It's basically tapping on acupuncture/acupressure points combined with statements/affirmations. Also free and easy to learn. You can find a lot of solid tutorials on KZread or on various webpages. You might think: what kind of crazy tapping is this and how can it help. Well, next to countless testimonials that you can find, it is used by trauma teams in Israel for example so there must be something to it. And since it's free the possible "Return On Investment" can only be zero or positive. 😉 From what I've seen so far I furthermore wanted to say that I believe in you and that you'll find your way. You really look like a strong, pragmatic person and nice to be around. I'm sure the Universe will smile upon you. 😄

Living in a van I guess is nice, and you say you can move not be opening your windows to the same each day, you would always have to be the step ahead I guess to make sure you have all you need, you are brave as it is a weird place out there, a home is stronger and safer in my eyes, but after 10 years I guess you get used to van life every day, van life must be cozy, close knit, and cheaper it has to be than a mortgage or rent, enjoyed the video stay positive Lidia 👍🇬🇧☀️

And, most van lifers have fitness memberships USE THEM. I worked myself literally to death! Van life is a good idea, to get your life together. Best of luck to you, and all van lifers.

Before I suggest saving your money to live in US and trying to play America's 'games' with credit (research its truth) I would suggest leaving the country and going to another one. America is not an inviting place (it is not the land of the free home of the brave or friendly to and so do research if you are not connected or attached to anything in America like family etc. not only will you be treated a lot better, your money will go a lot further as well. So if you are not dependent or can work remotely, LEAVE AMERICA, best decision in my life 20 years ago, built a 2 story house cash. and never get called out because of racism which doesn't exist in other country.

I’ve been in my van for almost 2yrs now and it’s still being built. Little by little, slow and steady. There are days that I cry in frustration but other days I laugh and rejoice in happiness. I live in my van because I felt stuck paying high rent, in a job that I despised and in a depression that was eating me whole. Although it is difficult and I’m still basically sleeping on the floor of my van, I am happy and my depression is no longer eating me whole, just snacking now. As long as you are happy you are free, as long as your lifestyle offers this then perfect. Once you start feeling differently then you know it’s time to move on. Thank you for your honest and transparent videos!

Forgive my ignorance and intrusion, if you would. I honor (and often, envy) the excitement of riding a wild horse into the setting sun and feeling the wind of freedom. It's awesome, yes. And I am admittedly an "old guy" at 52 who saved for kids to have braces and college since before they were born and set aside monies in case my wife suffered the same medical challenges that her mother did, and prepared for a long life and retirement and and and . . . a bunch of decidedly boring, unromantic stuff. My question is this: after whatever period of time of pure freedom, how does one re-enter what I daresay is the "real" (boring, normalish) world? How far behind are you on Social Security credits or IRA contributions for retirement? How do you explain or clarify to your next career employer a multi-year gap in W2 employment? Essentially, how do you prepare to re-enter a more normalized - I am sorry for the lack of a more sensitive term - world and society? I recognize that solders do it, porn stars do it, convicts do it, people have to take months or years away to care for ailing parents or distressed children, etc. Further, anything that hurts your mental or emotional health needs to be Job One, so I don't begrudge anyone from this van/rv/trainhopping/live in the woods pursuit. If it cleanses, you should do it. But by what manner do you start up again when you are whole? Respectfully I hope my inquiry doesn't convey any type of judgment. I am immensely curious.

I lived in a van for 45 years traveling across the country. Most Wal-marts will let you park overnight. Not all in California, though. I have never been thrown out of truck stops. You can get showers at truck stops for about $10. Truck stops are relatively safe. People are going in and out of them all night. Police often get coffee or food at truck stops so there is another layer of security.

Right. Buy a few acres somewhere in the boondocks. A base you can escape to that's your own. And in case chit hits the fan. Also, having a piece of acreage gives you a mailing address for your driver' ID or whatnot. That would be my plan if I was living the dream like she is.

Glad I came across this. I've been living in Rosarito for 3 years to save money but now live out of my Suburban in San Diego and I've been looking at renting an apartment and it's so expensive. Even roommate situations are $1500 a month. I was considering buying an RV but then you're limited on where you can stay the night so I'm now seriously considering getting a camper van. This life is NOT for everyone, and that is not what is being shared. You have to want to be self sufficient and to learn. You have to want to solve problems and provide solutions for your self and very often times for others around you. I am fortunate that I have my partner that has always been a wild one...as I am. Living the way your doing is what made it possible. Today I live on a multimillion dollar ranch because I was willing to make the sacrifice's your making now. That is a good choice in a van, lightweight, good on fuel, enough room and affordable. You do not have the pressures of bills like mortgage, rent, hydro, cable, internet. From the looks of things, storage costs, gas, groceries, car insurance, low overhead. If you do have some money you will be able to hang onto it a lot longer, and have freedom to go wherever you want. Anything you need can be kept in a storage, and when needed just go and get. You are right we are working for nothing, and uphill battle getting steeper every month and year. At some point in time, I think many of us will be calling this the norm, it will only get worse out there.

I feel lucky because not only did I find a room to rent in a house (roommates) for 500 including utilities, but the owners son who is the main tenant has his girlfriend basically living with him here, so I casually just began having my girlfriend sleep over and eventually she just moved out of her apartment. We didn't really ask anybody if we could because he's doing it too and we all get along so we just didn't say anything. So we both live for 250 a month including utilities, which actually rivals van life. Because it's like 200+ just to insure the van. So, we don't have all of the other benefits of vanlife, and I'm still saving to execute the van plan. But economically one day I realized that if I can continue sharing places like this, I'm actually not to far off economically from where I'd be in a van. Maybe just a hundred dollar difference. But economy is only one small interest of van life. The principal is - having something I own. Because I only make 15 an hour and I have health issues and although I try and keep hopeful, I look at the prices of even the smallest land or houses and I'm just blown away. For the working class in 2024 making less than 20 an hour, it's close to impossible to own anything. Think about that. The biggest chunk of Americans, who work the hardest, will be born, live eating the worst food and develop health problems, and die without ever owning something. Owning a tiny little plot of land, and a tiny house to raise a family and leave behind something on this world... If you're just working class, that's completely off the table. Working won't earn me anything. So guys... That's why I want a van. Because even if I can't own anything beneath the tires, at least I can own one little thing from wheels up. To be honest when I begin thinking about that... How sad is that? Now this lifestyle will become so popular that it'll drive a shift in the economy, you're already seeing it, they're cracking down on mobile dwellings. They don't like it that people can live free. They don't want us in that spot where we don't need to rent your walls and roofs and dirt plot. If half of Americans were living on wheels, you bet they'd take action. Charging us, taxing us, making us rent the ground beneath our feet. I could easily see the city constituting some sort of mandatory ground rent for any space occupied by a mobile dwelling. Or just tack on a huge tax to the registration of the vehicle. They'll eventually get us. But I think for now, I'm so frustrated trying to work and live that I think hopping in a van and getting the hell out of here is the only way to be free from this hamster wheel of doing the same thing every day for 40 hours to fill someone else's pockets and I get to own nothing. And I can't travel anywhere further than a weekend trip. And to pay off a house takes 25 years. And that's if by some miracle you can establish enough credit to do it. So at age 30 if you buy a house, that's 50 years of life left. So you spend half of your entire adult life paying off the house. And by the time it's done, the best years of your life are over. There are no golden years, I think the guys who pay off their mortgage and retire at 65 have just enough time to croak. I want none of it. I would rather hit the road and never be seen again. "the land of opportunity". Yes, it's the land of the opportunistic. That opportunity is for maybe 20, 30 percent of us tops. And if you aren't lucky or talented enough to be one of them, the rest of us ride on their coat tails. If you're in that 30 upper percent, you could comment and give me a lecture about if I work hard enough and get some education and grow some ambition. The image I get is of climbing up those coat tails and pulling other people beneath me as I do it. Basically what you're saying is "than don't be in that bottom 30 percent." So the answer is - stop being exploited and start exploiting. I mean really that's what we are talking about here. We can't all be wealthy. The wealthy control the poor, so your solution is basically if I can't beat em, join em. There's got to be a better system for everyone.

It’s important that you continue giving the truth about the negative side of van life because not enough people are honest about me! ❤

Exactly and it's nice having that extra money that would go to rent more bills and no equity versus ban life where you can upgrade your home anytime anywhere

I just bought a camper and a truck and some land in NC, totally off the grid. Having a well installed next month! All the way up in the mountains with deer running everywhere!
