Why I Disappeared - How Bowie's Advice Changed my Attitude
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If you've come here looking for a video that's 100% about Bowie because he's in the thumbnail, I apologise. This video is about a lot of things, Bowie is one of them (although probably the most pivotal). Skip to 9mins in to watch Bowie stuff (albeit without the context)
My KZread absence explained, and what I learnt about remaining creative in hard times.
Where have I been? Why haven’t I been making videos? Why did someone take legal action against me? And what can we learn from David Bowie to make us more productive and successful in our own work?
00:00 Intro
00:22 Part 1: 'The Tortured Artist' myth
02:06 Part 2: The Letter
04:09 Part 3: Legal Action
07:37 Part 4: Mental Health
09:03 Part 5: Attitude - What Bowie taught me
All music made by me.
Music at the start is my version of Henry Purcell's Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary
(this was written in 1695 and the composition is therefore in the public domain. Can someone please explain this to KZread's copyright bots?)

I’m overwhelmed by all the lovely comments of support. Thank you all so much. Thank you to those of you who have suggested a GoFundMe page for medical bills, but I live in the UK so I don’t have medical bills (NHS). I’m not going to name the photographer who instigated legal action. While she caused me a lot of mental anguish, I don’t want to put her in any position where she’s victimised. There’s two sides to every story and kindness is always the only productive way forward.

When I saw 2 replies to your post, I was hoping one of them was you saying, "Oh screw it! Her name is Blah-Blah-Blah!" lol I hired an intern/associate photog for my studio some years back. And included some of his shots on our website. Only to be contacted by another photog claiming one shot was his. This turned out to be the truth and of course I had to let go of the young associate, and I immediately took down the photo. Regardless the man that shot and owned it wanted thousands to be paid, even though I took it right down. I've seen my work used and requested a take down/cure. If it was acted upon in the next week or so, I always felt life goes on, what more can you ask. Well, this guy was asking for more and I just told him to f-himself. Wanna sue me, go at. He circled back once again, but it died out. His court costs would be higher than what he could win.

When I was sick with cancer and convinced I was dying, Blackstar, the album he wrote while he knew he was dying, was one of the only things that made me feel understood. Dying is lonely and terrifying beyond words. No matter how much people around you love you, they don't, and can't, get what it's like. Blackstar said to me, "Yes this path is dark, but this is also a spiritual path toward understanding the whole of life." Clean scans for me for nearly 3 years now, but I'll never forget the way Bowie helped me understand death, to the degree that I, or anyone, can understand, before they walk through that secret door. Also, Jamie, what you went through, that must have been so incredibly painful. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope it feels better now that you have put the fruits of your experience out into the world. Damn the folks who prey on others. And at the same time, as I was recovering myself, it helped to hear from wise artists this truth: that everything seems to happen to us, until we realize it is happening FOR us.
"You create so you can feel like your true self again" YES! It's why we do this. Thank you for this video!!!!

I am diagnosed with depression. Sometimes when everything is falling apart and life sucks, I "do". I take my camera and I take pictures. I don't "create", I just "do". Somehow it keeps me going. After a while (or after a longer period of time) I can "create" again instead of "doing" and enjoy it again. We are all different, and I hope you find your way of surviving. There's a ledge below the ledge below 'creating', though. You forgot to mention 'being'. Even if you've been knocked off 'creating' - if you loose your footing on 'doing' then 'being' is still there. In many ways - the best creation comes from the 'being' ledge. Perhaps we should stop trying to climb back up. If we get stuck on the 'being' level, and we're huddled against the cliff wall because there appears to be nothing now between us and oblivion, it might not be such a terrible idea to decide to stay there. Stay there. Be. And if the people safely on the sand, way down below, want to collect up all the bits you dislodge while you're scratching 'I WAS HERE' on the rock face (and make a profit on them - I presume) then so be it. Never forget why you like it. There's no urgent need to climb closer to being pushed off again.

I think especially in times like these, where it feels like everything goes down the drain and life feels pointless we need artist doing creative work and bring back color and joy in our lifes. ❤
As a designer, and generally very visual person, I must say the graphics and animation here are STUNNING. What a pleasure to watch! In other news: in 2012 I have been diagnosed with depression after a clinical burnout. As a creative, this can be limiting at times. @@jamiewindsor I find everything in your work, I often oriente towards your channel when I give classes (please dont sue me). From your presets to your video essay on mobile photography, I think we should compile your channel and do a book 🥰
Bowie left us a lot of wisdom in both his interviews and his work. Two things that are perhaps pertinent regarding this video; Bowie's family had a history of mental illness, and it seemed he used writing as a way to ward off his fear of illness and maintain clarity (or control), and it's interesting how he placed himself in different scenarios, different cities to see how it would affect his life, and subsequently his writing, and he had the capacity to examine and explore that - mindfulness, basically. Secondly, when he found himself stuck with a problem in his music, he could often find a way to overcome it through painting instead. I think he lived as a buddhist (as much as we can ever guess his real identity). Wish you the best with your health and channel.

His approach to mental illness in his family is shown in his actions and also Bewlay Brothers, a song about his brother Terry who suffered from mental illness. It’s interesting because it is one of my favorite songs of his, with only one live performance of it (which was funny because he had to read the lyric sheet for it when he did sing it). So interesting how he managed to make a comparison to him and his brother with Terry eventually losing a grip on reality and David himself changing the reality of his persona from album to album.
@Ruylopez778

@@lw8099 That's interesting, thanks! I've seen quite a few interviews with Bowie, and I knew he had a difficult relationship with his mother, and concerns about his spiritual and mental state, but watching Moonage Daydream added a lot of perspective (assuming we can ever really know another person or trust what is presented since any material can be edited to imply something different). Bowie was/is such a fascinating artist and person. I wonder how much of the music, performances or interviews are just a facade. Presuming what is in the documentary is taken at face value, it must have had a profound effect on his life and worldview. Perhaps that is kind of the point from a meta perspective; we aren't really invited to know where the public persona starts or ends, or rather we can trick ourselves into believing we do, and so Bowie can be whatever the individual perceives to be most truthful or essential. I would say that in the later years he seemed to be more open and less guarded, but how can we ever know what is sincere about another person, especially one we only see through public appearances. Still, there is plenty of wisdom and vision to enjoy and speculate on.
@lw8099
Жыл бұрын
@@Ruylopez778 yeah totally. I feel about the facade, Bowie was truly a servant for art, music and culture. It’s amazing how much awareness he had in his creations and how lost he got into them….whether in persona or drugs. I remember where he had gotten a machine where it would spit out different permutations of words he inputted, just to speed up lyric development to see if anything was there worth using. I’m sure he will refine it of course, but the fact he thought to use it at the time shown how ahead of the times he was. But I truly believe that he had soooo much art and music in him that he was compelled to create. Him being normal and still was the facade.

Comment not necessarily directed at @@jamiewindsor, but I was targeted by a copyright troll in 2021. It kicked off a period of deep research. Along the way I encountered so many levels of lawyers and services whose whole business model is to suck up money with the promise of avoiding going to court. It truly felt like scammers all the way down. As far as I could tell, a company called August Image/Global Rights Control (they are far from the only such organization) pitches their service as copyright watchdogs to working photographers. One of the ways that they lure photographers to sign with them is with the promise of recurring "recoup lost licence fees". Then they find websites that have used the images then threaten legal action until the poster relents and pays up. However they aren't a law firm and it's unclear if they actually employ any attorneys. Of course if an attorney had contacted me, I would have been scared af. In my instance, they gave up trying to squeeze money from me when I told them I was thinking of seeking a declaratory judgment of non-infringement in the United States District Court.
I’ve always enjoyed your videos. I’ll support you in any way I can.

The fact that you have made ANY vieeo while all of this has been going on is brilliant, the fact that you made THIS video stands to the type of person you are, and your dad is rightly proud! You took the time to explain where you were (even tough you never have to) what had happened, what still needs to happen and even though you have had so much on your own plate you think of others and what they may be going through. I hope that this becomes one of your most watched videos and that great things happen for you! Thanks for sharing.
Your video is so relatable. Thank you!
Damn, mahn. That sounds really tough. You’ve also put a film together that outlines my conclusions from the last three years strife. I hope you continue to feel yourself. You’ve helped a lot of people with this film. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your feelings and thoughts with us. Hope you're ok and getting better.
