Why I chose the BMPCC 6K over the Sony A7SIII

Even though I love my Pocket 6K, I think that you made a mistake. The Sony A7SIII is the perfect wedding video camera. It has amazing autofocus, great low light ability, electronic viewfinder, mounts easily on a super light Weebill-S gimbal, dual card record for back up (a savior for weddings) and on and on. I don't shoot weddings anymore, and only do commercial work, so the pocket is better suited for when you have time to set-up. One other great feature is that you can pair the Sony A7Siii with the Sony UWP-D26 and you have super high quality audio recording.

yea, I am still debating in my head. Portability of A7s is just unbeatable and ISO 12000 is sick. No rigging needed as it is stabilied, and 4K 120p at fullframe sensor I think still worth the price. No need for so many batteries to power follow focus systems and cables... throwing it on a gimbal for few shots also way easier. But again, I opted for pocket4k :D as it is fraction of the price and god image is stunning.

I think its good to point out that the difference between a proper cinema camera and hybrid like the a7siii. If image quality is king as well as resolution & raw format , go with the blackmagic but knowing you have to work around the camera not the other way round. If you need a balance between features, convenience and image quality then a7siii is the better choice no doubt. The choice is simple imo, just gage your priorities and choose accordingly.

Great Video. I own 02 BMPCC 4Ks and a Sony A7siii. I do prefer the BM colours and UI and use them for my weddings. The only reason I am gravitating towards the sony (or my Lumix S5) is the option to record to Dual SD cards...the fear of losing data while using BM cams is a bit concerning for me..I use SD cards for the BM cams too. But i still went with the Sony because of the autofocus. I know its more expensive, being a 1 man band with interviews i don't have the time to check if both cameras are in focus. Together with the amazing low light preformance and future investments i thought sony have me the most headroom. Anyway love the picture of the 6k and so need to learn a lot so keep on shooting guys! 🙂

I am actually in the debate between bmpcc 6k pro and a second-hand sony FS5m2. Since I do corporate and narrative style video most but sometimes the product shots require high framerates. BRAW is a huge huge win compared to prores raw, but the ergonomic of the cine cam body and being able to shot 4k120p really attract me.

I always use manual focus - so the BMPCC's poor AF system doesn't really factor into my thinking. No denying the Sony is superior in low light, but a dual native ISO isn't too shabby on the BMPCC (plus there's always LED panels to be relied upon in extreme situations)

Great video! How do you find the weight of that set up then for weddings? And manual focusing for the entire day for weddings? I’m an aspiring film maker, but short films are far and few between and I do the occasional wedding as well. So for me I’m thinking I rig up the Sony a7siii so I can have start to practice manual focus but still have the auto focus when I need it etc - I would love to buy the Bmpcc 6K pro but I think for me, it would be buying a camera and not being able to use it straight away - maybe a future investment when I’ve developed the skill set of manual focus.

Very good video - have you priced in the cost of an external monitor for the BMPCC ? Maybe for wedding work - which is largely indoor shooting - one can get away with just using the built-in monitor but - outdoors - just relying on the BMPCC's monitor - is - at least in my experience - a hit and miss affair.

Have used a7si A7s ii A7s iii and fs7, now using the 6k pro, the internal ND Filters are extremely useful though not so accurate with color, the ef mount is brilliant finaly not needing an adapter saves on weight. And the color from the blackmagic grades much nicer in my opinion and kind of looks like the arri color science eventhough the Sony is very good I find I looks more like video than film. Shooting an entire wedding in 6k raw isn’t really feasible in my opinion data storage and converting for long term storage is going to be expensive ,maybe not as much as shooting red raw shooting in 4K proress is more than adequate for the job shooting in 6k has its benefits but I’d say it’s minimal for the end result

Personally , I think the A7SIII is much better in terms of the 'look', it is much closer to an Arri . Also having a 4K 120p feature is a major plus. I however purchased the 6K Pro due to the price difference, and as you rightly mentioned 2020 was very difficult so i couldnt afford to spend £3,000+ on a camera body. I do at the moment rent the A7SIII from time to time. Straight out the box the A7S III give you a beautiful compression with its full frame sensor, to achieve a similar look on the 6K/Pro , you would need 24-70mm range in lens (for compression) and shoot at around f1.8-f2.8 with a pro mist to really exaggerate the depth of field.

Had the 6k and 6k Pro since both came out, LOVED them. But ultimately switched the the S3/A1 (need a main photo camera since wedding photography is still a main source for me). Got tired of the micro jitters, always slightly missing focus, in and out, in and out, I prefer to shoot wide open, 1.2 if possible, and it's very very hard maintaining focus when someone is walking down the aisle, etc. Sony's eye/face detection is out of this world and exactly what I was wanting. And not to even mention the IBIS, my handheld shots are smoother than the Blackmagic was on a gimbal lol. Price to me is irrelevant, this is a business and especially if you're doing Weddings, one wedding pays for your camera or a very large portion of it. Plus it's a business expense. Still have my 6k Pro that I'll set up as a stationary for a second angle though. Love the image that comes out of those things!

When I switched to the S3 is seemed all those quirks got ironed out and it allowed me to focus more on my content and being in the moment, which in my opinion, made my films better. Now I strictly do weddings so It's not like I'm creating a golden globe or anything, but as long as they're happy at the end of the day then it's a win to me. And that's what they Sony gave to me.

Compare that to the run and gun Sony a7siii, you don’t really need the whole setup since it has in body image stabilization, longer battery life, auto focus, etc. So it comes down to what you need it for pretty much…

Wheww, it's a tough choice. I've been a Canon guy for a few decades but am weary of Canon's feature choices (or lack of them) in very expensive "new" systems. For crying out loud, my 70D has touch screen dual pixel focus and face tracking, I couldn't get that in the C100, then the C100 MKII, then the C300, then the C300 MKII but, I can, years later, drop $11k to finally have it in the C300 MKiii...really Canon? No camera is perfect for it all so you have to weigh the pluses and minuses. The modern menu system, 6K, BRAW are big pluses in the BMPCC...real big but, You settle that adrenaline rush down and get a little more analytical and you take a look at those minus'. Autofocus, a big deal for me with interview and following people while they talking needs that tracking, a must but, BMPCC 6K's autofocus is almost useless for me. Image stabilization, not in the BMPCC 6K but the A7S iii has it plus gyroscopic information in camera that is planted in the metadata, very good for post stabilizing without a lot of cropping. In fact, that full frame gives you plenty of output options that don't crop/window. Low light is just not good on the BMPCC 6K but amazing on the Sony. The BMPCC would certainly protect my EF mount Canon lens investment. Full frame sensor on the Sony a big plus. So, you look at both out of the box, The Sony has an articulating screen, a must so, you'll need a monitor for the BMPCC and starting with Portkey you start at $500 and go up to nearly seven with Blackmagic's monitors, more with Atomos. Battery life is good with the Sony but with the BMPCC you'd be in a race to see whether it gives out before a Canon R5 overheats...a very short race, so add a battery pack system. BM battery grip a bit high at $245 but you can find less expensive options still, one more thing to add to the cost and one more to hang on a rig. Now we're closing in on the Sony A7s iii price, or at least within consideration range and on the Canon C300/200 bulk size and weight. I certainly don't see anything in the Canon camp, the R5 is an oven masquerading as a camera, the C70, as Canon usual, WAY expensive for that class/size of camera and not even a full frame camera. As much as the BMPCC 6K appeals to me, it is that autofocus, both face tracking and eye tracking that I have to have. If only Blackmagic could get on that. It boils down to your own workflow and clientele needs. I'm ready to dump my C300 and pull the trigger on a BMPCC IF they would just get that autofocus better.

You're bang on about the lack of tilting screen + auto focus being issues with the BMPCC 6K, but to me it's still an absolute steal at under £2k. As I mention in the video, even with the cage, mic, focus wheel, monitor (mine was a steal at £150!) and matte box, it still came in at under the cost of the A7Siii's body alone!

@@alexlester2834 All those goodies coupled with the price certainly makes one drool. The picture is great and the BM ecosystem is something that I am very interested in...a camera matched to an editing system. It all boils down to work flow and I admit that a lot of mine dealing with interviews and tracking people may be a bit of an outlier. After a couple decades I have really grown weary of Canon's marketing ways, not the technology or color science, they are great but how they dole it out to the customer. I wanted to drop the bulk of the C300 but the C70, at $5500 does not have face tracking, my eight year old 70D has it but Canon won't let you have it. A bit of a frustrating tease, one company has amazing technology but won't let you have it for less than ten grand, the other has amazing system at an unbelievable price but missing that one key ingredient. Certainly can't go with the R5, a recent interview by the head of Canon and even he said the 8K was just a marketing move to beat the competition to it with no thought to the engineering flaws. Interesting to see what Blackmagic does with the next iteration of the BMPCC, surely autofocus can be improved. Even on the G2 and 12k it would probably be no more than a firmware upgrade. We'll see, I'm rooting for Blackmagic.

6K PRO is much better because of internal NDs and battery life is fixed. Original NP-F570 can keep the camera alive for 1,5 hour and my 80€ powerbank can keep the camera alive for 6 hours (6K Braw 5:1 50FPS, 2TB T7 SSD)

Except Netflix will not accept anything below the Ursa for film making. Sony FX 6 for the win.

So wrong, the a7s3 is by far a way better option, no rig needed, the bmpcc6k is a nightmare to balance on a gimbal (you need counterweigt etc.), the screen has a blue tint, the body is enormous, no IBIS, the battery is crap, you need to swap all the time. The lowlight on the the a7s3 is amazing and god knows you need a good low light camera on weddings. One point to mention with the bmpcc4k/6k is when you start filling up your ssd, the boot up time starts to be going higher and higher because it has to calculate the amount of space left calculating all those files, it can be a pain (it has been for me) Then you need to think file format, with the bm you can't record h265 or even h264 files and that my friend fills up you media storage pretty quickly. Of course the Sony a7s3 is almost double in price and of course the image quality of the bmpcc6k is higher but at the end of the day when you grade your footage I bet the majority of people won't see a difference. Then a lightweight camera, with amazing AF, great battery life, amazing low light, excellent viewfinder, versatile mount system (E mount is cross compatible with virtually any mount) etc...plus the 4K120fps, low footprint files it's worth the price difference imho

Agree to disagree I guess Laurent! While I appreciate a lot of what you're saying, the BMPCC works for me on the basis that: I don't use gimbals (glidecam all the way), I have the battery grip which reduces the battery issue and an external monitor to help monitor the composition/exposure etc (I haven't experienced the blue tint issue you refer to on the screen also). No denying the A7SIII is a killer cam, but when you consider the BMPCC comes in at roughly half the price, and boasts superior picture quality, it's easy to see why so many people have gone the way of Black Magic over Sony.

Still choose a7s3 af, IS, codec is just fine, color is good enough for my work.

The BMPCC 6k pro has mini dual xlr, 5in bright hdr monitor, built in NDs, SSD via usb-c, 12v power and NP-F 570 batteries, better UI, black magic raw and prores raw, Davinci Resolve studio, 6k, good lowlight. Sony IBIS is trash but AF, lowlight, flippy touch screen, and slowmo are more of the highlights

A very personal view. Not considering that the sony has an unbeatable autofocus system. When you work mainly as a wedding filmer the sony will give you much better shots. :-)

Disagree. The BMPCC 6K trumps the A7Siii in terms of image quality, although you're bob on about the latter having the better AF system

The A7s III is way cheaper in the US, isn't it? Like $3,700 with tax.

I like the video and info, but whatever camera you used to film this video sucks to be honest. It looks like a 25-year-old analog Canon XL1 tape video! It has no color, no contrast, is dark and distracting. If you are going to produce these videos please, invest into a proper camera to shoot them with. It looks like an old iPhone to be honest, and that is not a compliment.
