Sony A7s III vs BMPCC 6K: Which one is for you?

For my BMPCC 6K rig check out my other videos! The cool thing is, you can also rig up the a7s III with almost the same exact rig (v-mount battery plate, side and top handle and the Smallrig base with rods.)

I've been using the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6k (BMPCC 6k) since it came out and before that the BMPCC 4k. I really loved what these small camera could do. I loved the image and how easy they are to use.
But for my needs in filmmaking I was missing some features that other cameras did have so I started looking for something that could make my life easier - which was in my case the Sony a7s III.
This video will is not focused on image quality, which is of course really important but honestly - image wise, for many types of productions both cameras are really really good. The focus in this video is gonna be on something that should get more attention: usability in the real world. so how easy are the cameras to use on shoots and what features do they offer that could make your life easier depending on how you work.
There is no winner in general - both cameras are absolutely great pieces of tech. But depending on the kind of work and projects you mostly do, one camera can have certain advantages above the other.
If you mostly do hand-held stuff and you tend to be more often in situations where you don't have a crew I think the a7s is a great option. It can be rigged lightly, it focuses by itself and with the IBIS your footage will look a bit smoother.
The 6k is still a great camera. The fact that it's missing IBIS and Autofocus is not a weaknesses per se, it just means you will have to work in a different way with it and might need more helping hands to handle a bigger rig and more manual stuff.
I hope this video was helpful to you. :)
-
The talking head shot was shot on the a7s III on the 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss lens.
Almost all of the B-Roll was shot on my favorite stills camera, the Fujifilm X-T3.

    I’ll always pick the best image quality when choosing a camera for whatever purpose. The rest can be sorted out using different solutions. At the end of the day it’s the image the client sees and not how easy it was for you to shoot it.

  • @pierogiannist

    @pierogiannist

    I respect that! My reality: I don't shoot movies for the big screen. I mostly shoot videos for web. And once it's gone through the youtube compression, no one can tell the difference, especially not the client who is most likely not a pixel peeper like us filmmakers. So I figured I'd choose the camera that makes the work itself easier since the result - for my kind of work at least - won't look any different. That's just my opinion. Cheers!

    Really good video. Thank you. I've been looking for a comparison video that speaks about usability and not just specs. It seems the best option would be to get both and use either one according what is required for a particular shoot. But there is a question in my mind; what happens if I need to do a two camera shoot? Then using both will result in extra time to match them in post, wouldn't it? On another note, I visited your website and your work is really, really good!

  • @pierogiannist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Man, thanks so much for your comment, made my day :) Depending on the kind of projects you work on it totally makes sense to own both cameras. Matching them takes some effort but it's possible. There is a new tool called Cinematch that's supposed to make this process much easier - haven't tried it myself though.. But if you're planning to use both cameras alongside each other a lot I'd recommend getting 2 cameras with the same color science.

    I disagree about MAIN focus should be usability but it’s important for sure. Image quality is huge for me. Also usability has pros on both. For example, using the operating system as well as having a bigger screen makes it easier on the pocket in that regard where as autofocus on the a7siii makes focusing a breeze on moving objects

    Thoughtful review thanks. I have the BMPCC 4K and love it. It's easy to always wonder 'what if' I went over to the A7siii (I came from two APSC Sonys). Over time I've grown to love the workflow and cinematic features (such as 180º, false colour and many others) and have decided that I'm not going to think about other cameras any more. I'm investing more into glass and just getting on with jobs and my own creative projects. It's true what you say about Blackmagic really focussing on us the end user. I can feel it every time I pick up my rig or bring my footage into Resolve. I'll now see if you have a video comparing the image of the two systems °¬)

    great video xDDD But I have still some questions as it's pretty hard to choose between the 6k and 6k pro haha. I've never had a video camera, so I'm somehow afraid that it will be too heavy with the Pocket 6k Pro (1.2 kg DJI Rs 2 stabilizer, 800g Sigma 18-35 mm, 1.2 kg Pocket 6k Pro, and another battery or SSD.) Do you think that could be the case? Especially when you e.g. film the whole day or when you travel and still have a drone. I also wonder if the 6k Pro's "tilting screen" is really necessary? (I filmed with the Gopro and the cell phone on a stabilizer and never really had any problems, even when I walked very close to the floor. Maybe it's different with the camera, as many 6k users said it is necessary). Buying one later would make less sense, as it costs more and is perhaps even more uncomfortable if you use the stabilizer and fix a "DJI 3D focus system" / microphone on the "head" of the camera. I've already looked a bit on the internet and apparently the 6k Pro fits on the RS 2, but it's not yet entirely clear to me whether that's really true. I have one last question then I say more than thank you; Do you actually need nd filters a lot in filmmaking? thxx

  • @Gordymax

    @Gordymax

    Pick the 6k pro. It’s got a built in ND filter and yes ND filters are necessary if you want to shoot in the bright outdoors and still want to keep a low aperture with a matching shutter speed to frame rate.

    By far one of the most realistic looks at this comparison. None of the "well, but BRAW is great, so everything else is meaningless", "the screen is bigger, so fuck tilting", "the BMPCC 6K is just a better image with better menus". An honest look at the use of each. The image out of my BMPCC4K is great, and colouring is a pleasure, but it's super annoying to actually film with by myself. I recently bought a Sony FX3 (which is basically the A7SIII with some differences) after tons of research (or at least I thought so) - but I didn't even hear about the BMPCC 6k until today. Now I am a bit lost if I made the right choice... I am so far happy with the FX3, but it was soooo pricey and I just started my business as a film maker. I wonder if I should have taken the 6K instead, almost the same quality for much less money it seems. I got hired as camera operator for a music video in March, and they told me they are going to use a 6K for their shoot, even thought I proposed to bring my own FX3, which got me started on questioning my choice. Now I watch more and more videos and wonder why I never hear of the 6K before. I watched hundreds of videos and reviews before purchasing, but it was always a question of "Sony vs Canon", and model comparisons. Seems that just like DaVinci, this camera is underrated and underrepresented in usage in the film community?

    I found out today that when you have 1 SD card in the camera, you’ll get that little line blank if you slip it into slot 2 (bottom slot). However, I didn’t get the blank line, and instead got the regular reading when I slipped it into slot 1 (top slot). Edit: this can be changed in the settings anyway, to make slot 2 priority. In case you have a preference to slip it into slot 2 (bottom).

    Hey Chris, nice. Well, looking at the CineD Labtest both cameras have about the same usable dynamic range, the sony even a bit more - (BMPCC6k: 11.8 stops, a7S III: 12.4 stops). Also, I think XAVC-S I is a solid codec and hardly different from the ProRes footage the a7s produces. (I compared ProRes footage from my Ninja V and internal XAVC-S I footage). Shooting in 10 bit with this codec I felt the image holds up very well and offers solid, stable colors - even when pulled in the grade. It won't fall apart easily. And, at least from my experience, things like color selections in Resolve are working even more accurate with a7s footage than with Blackmagic footage. And finally I think resolution is a bit overrated. Of course, if you're looking for the sharpest, most detailed image, you would want to shoot higher resolution sensors. But that depends what your definition of what a good image is, which is a whole different discussion I would prefer not starting here. Anyways, just my opinion on things from my experience with it so far - I have only worked with the a7s for a month or so, with the 6k much longer. But I agree with a lot of things you've said.The Pocket 6k has a bit more latitude and especially in RAW you get more freedom in post. And I don't like the in-camera processing that you can't turn off. The Pocket 6k surely wins in terms of RAW shooting as it works so great in Resolve and you get to change ISO and white balance. If I had to choose between the two cameras to shoot a movie for the big screen I would go for the Pocket 6k. Cheers, Piero

    Hey thanks I just asked this same question to Matteo Bertoli, whom i m sure you are aware of, any thoughts on c70 vs bmpcc 6k pro? your focus in this video is on usability and real world applications esp. when it comes to corporate jobs etc. I am still on fence whether to go with 6k pro basically as it misses the autofocus which could come in very handy (as well as the extra stops of dyn. range and the fact you can get a focal reducer for full frame point of view. Thank you! (I am not considering Sony as FX6 is too pricey for me , A7S III lacks ND and I don't have any Sony glass)

    Hey Patrick, thanks for your comment. Let me think. I really did consider the C70 before I went for the A7S and watched a ton of reviews. In my opinion if offers the best allround package. Solid colors, stellar image quality and DR, great form factor and menu, packed with features and ports. But of course it does come at a price. (Add the speedbooster and you're at over $6k) If I were you: if you have the extra cash, spend it and go for the C70. It will be a reliable workhorse for years to come and AF will be so nice to have in certain situations. If you wanna save some $$ for lenses and AF is not a big benefit for the kind of work you do: go for the BMPCC 6K Pro. Best value package. Hope I could help!

Yes A7S III is great, and if today's FX3 would have had inbuilt NDs I might have been very tempted/sold to jump ship and go for that. However, as it is, I think I will follow your advice and simply run the numbers and see which one works out best once I add the necessary kit.. bit annoying no/few cages etc have been released thus far for the C70, let alone the 6K Pro... To clarify a point, if you are using the Atomos Ninja V you are able to see if you are recording or not on the Ninja V screen. A big fat red border shows up on the screen of the atomos. I think your issue may have been using the wrong monitor as well as not knowing how to use the A7SIII. So it really wasn't that helpful for me to decide if to go to the 6K. . Other than that, great review of the 6kPro, love that camera.

    Hey Pawan! Are you shooting on a gimbal a lot? In that case I would choose a camera with an autofocus system like the R5 or R6. If you're shooting handheld and you've got one hand on the lens all the time, I would not worry too much about focusing manually. My advice: why don't you just go out and shoot some stuff on your 5D with manual focus! That way you will quickly see how that works out for you. :)

I specially found useful when you talked about leaving an ND filter mounted permanently on run and gun shootings in interiors plus exteriors, taking advantage of the high ISO capabilities of the Sony. 1. Iphone+smallrigcage + monitor plus app 2. Android + wired connection + monitor plus app Can you share your oppinion on this setups vs ninja setup? In my oppinion the main "phone setups" advantages are: 1. Calibrated display(high end phones at least) 2. Auto brightness 3. More display size options and display color spaces depending on device 4. Low weight (battery included) much much ligher than ninja setup. 2. Much longer battery life vs ninja relative to weight 3. Noiseless 4. Internal storage build in although only for proxy, but great for scrubing and playback 5. Camera control and display off all the main camera function + more phone/app related features (ex: tap to focus, charge the camera from the phone) The main ninja advantages 1. Real external recorder 2. Much more robust (i guess) 3. Much smoother viewing framerate via hdmi vs usb 4. Greater monitoring resolution 1080p vs 640p I don't own the ninja, hence my original question, so any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated! Keep up the good work!
