Why I Chose Family Medicine! (Medical Resident Vlog)
Find out what led me to my chosen specialty of Family Medicine! I love it and have never looked back! But of course, it's not for everyone. I also briefly touch on my strategy for choosing which residency programs to apply to. I hope you enjoy this video and have a great week ahead!

family medicine is definitely one of the best specialities for preventative care! I hope you are able to help many future patients avoid hospital stays

I totally agree! That is definitely my goal! Thanks for commenting.
omg. i never comment on youtube videos but i just need to say this video meant so much for me to watch ! I'm premed and planning to apply to medical school the next cycle. i have been so discouraged recently with so many people looking down on preventative care and primary practice. everything you've said i resonate with completely and honestly it means so much to hear someone else who is so successful talk about medicine this way. so many people are disinterested in the interpersonal and educational aspect of primary care, but it is so so important!! so thankful i found your account :)

Awesome video!! I can totally relate. I’ve always wanted to be a FM doc but a lot of people have told me to do IM because I won’t be seeing OB or peds as much if I practice in an urban area.
@thebalancingactmd
3 жыл бұрын
That is true! It’s not impossible but it is difficult. If you want to truly practice full scope you would have more opportunities in rural areas of the state. I would still do FM if you want that training though. IM would be better if you’re thinking about hospital medicine.
As a patient, this video is really instructive for helping me understand where primary care physician is coming from. She’s actually a really nice person but I’m trying to separate out the personality aspects to make sure I’m understanding what she might be trying to tell me as her patient.

Always important to feel like you understand your doctor!
It warms my heart to see someone talk about the importance of preventative care, I'm passionate about that too! I'm a senior pre-med student and am really interested in family medicine, peds, internal medicine, etc. But I've faced some stigma around it because a lot of my peers feel like surgery is the only "legitimate" type of specialty (since they make more income). Did you deal with similar stigma/attitudes at all in undergrad/med school? I've always been worried about dealing with ego in medical school and finding where I fit in.

Thanks for sharing. I dealt with the same thing, but it never bothered me because I knew myself. Not everyone is meant for primary care, and not everyone is meant for specialty medicine. You go where you're called and where your passions are so you don't burn out and end up unhappy!

This video resonates with me so much! I am applying for residency now; variety and flexibility were HUGE factors in specialty selection for me. I struggled between IM, FM, and EM but chose FM (after dual-applying) for the exact reasons you describe here.

I'm looking to go into family med and I find it difficult to explain to friends and family what it "is". I keep getting questions like "...then why not just go for internal med?" Ahhh. I'm looking to KZread for more eloquent answers, haha. The focus on preventive & holistic care and work-life balance are big points for me. And I feel you on never wanting to step into an OR again!

Well FM is different from IM at the core. Our value for the family unit is the cornerstone. FM docs also generally take a less is more approach to medicine, which I definitely subscribe to. It can be hard to explain, but they will understand eventually.
Lmao. Watching this video & had no idea we went to the same school. But your reasoning is the exact same as mine, and I absolutely feel that “after Augusta” bit in my soul lol

Hi! You can definitely be a hospitalist as FM, but you will more likely work in a smaller community hospital and not a tertiary center. If you go to a program that’s inpatient heavy, you can get a job as hospitalist right out of residency bc you’ll be pretty comfortable with it. Or you may consider doing hospitalist fellowship afterwards to get stronger before going for it.

New subscriber here!! Thank you for sharing your reason for choosing FM! I'm applying for family next cycle, but wanted to know if you have any tips or opinion on mentioning a plan to do a fellowship in your personal statement or interview? Thanks!
@thebalancingactmd

Hey there! Thanks for watching my video! There isn't a right or wrong answer for that. in my opinion, I think it's fine to share what your ultimate goals in family medicine are. That won't put you at any disadvantage. A program will be able to tailor their discussions with you to your interests and make sure they have what you're looking for.
I Want to match in Family Medicine more than ever!

Hello!! Thanks for the great video. Can I ask you a Question? How difficult is to get into an EM fellowship as a FM doctor ? Thank you
@thebalancingactmd

Hey thanks for asking and thanks for watching my video. I’m not sure how competitive they are, but I know there are few of those spots so I can only imagine you’ll need to set yourself apart. I’d start early identifying the programs and find a way to do an away rotation to get your foot in the door.
How did you structure your personal statement when applying to medical school because you mentioned you didn’t really have a “moment” that made you realize medicine was for you? Thank you:)
@thebalancingactmd

Whew, hard to remember haha. I think talked about my experience as a minority and upbringing as first gen, my interest in education and public health, wanting to be impactful in my community, my discipline and striving for excellence.. etc I think that was the gist.
Hello, what course in college should i choose if i would like to choose fm? I'm in high school rn so I don't know much about these things.
@thebalancingactmd
3 жыл бұрын
Your courses in college don’t matter, just general pre-medicine courses you need before applying to medical school.
I’m in Houston, and I know I want to be a family physician. I haven’t started school at all. Zero pre reqs. But I don’t know exactly the path I need to take. I don’t want to make a wrong decision:(
@thebalancingactmd
2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the first step is figuring out if medicine is for you in general. It’s not for everyone and if you go into it for the wrong reasons you’ll be miserable. Next would be applying for and registering for classes, and there should be a rep at any school you choose who can assist you with the right classes.
So I’m just in high-school right now but I know, I really,really want to focus on primary health and become a physician of family medicine, but I think the biggest question I have is what do I have to sacrifice to do it; what were somethings you sacrifice to even just become a family physician especially in high-school?
@thebalancingactmd
Жыл бұрын
In high school, I didn't feel like I was sacrificing anything. I played sports and enjoyed myself, just made good grades and went to college. Still enjoyed college just had harder classes than others. All the extra time training after college feels sacrificial. You are paying insane amounts (taking out loans usually) of tuition to study/learn full time x4 years. Then residency you're getting minimum wage to work 60+ hours a week x3 years. Depending on where you study, you may sacrifice seeing family and friends and big events that happen if you can't afford to travel because of money or a big test coming/have to work. There's the stress of trying to be well-rounded in prep for residency applications and doing extra-curricular things to volunteer and grow as a leader. So it's a lot!
