I've had my Harrisville Design 36", 8-shaft for over 30 years and have never regretted my choice. For those weavers who are accustomed to a 4-shaft, moving to 8 is not difficult and is usually determined by the pattern you want to weave.

Harrisvilles are my favorites. I've owned Murphy, Macomber and Pendleton. The floating shafts on the HDs keep from breaking threads. They fold. They aren't complicated and you can even hack 2 of them together (we made an 8 shaft out of 2 inexpensive older used 4-shaft looms). For rugs, I used a Leesburg Rug Loom, the right tool for the job.

By the way, I bought a Schacht Baby Wolf loom off of ebay like 20 years ago and have never used. Your videos have motivated me to get it out and try using it. I don't know what the dent size is or anything at the moment it was so long ago. I hope you don't mind me asking stupid questions, since I'm a beginner on a floor loom.

Thanks for explaining why you selected the Harrisville loom. I had the opportunity to use one while taking a 10-week weaving class, and really liked the Harrisville for its clip-chain tie-up system. My other loom is a Toika countermarche, so compared to that the Harrisville tie-up system is a breeze. After that class, in which I wove a shadow weave shawl, I searched for a used HD loom for sale and found an 8-shaft/50" weaving width that someone had owned for several years but had never woven on, so it's still basically "new". Your videos on your HD loom are very helpful, since mine didn't come with the assembly manual or any instructions on the working parts. Could you please explain why you have the Texsolv cords and pins attaching your treadles, instead of the clip chains that are typical for the HD looms? Thanks very much.

Hi Margaret, the reason for the Texslov cords on the treadles is to make it more quiet. I weave in a room just off the living room/TV room and I didn't want to annoy my husband with the noise from the chains. I think it also makes it a little easier to lift the treadles without so much weight on them.

Hi, I'm buying the same loom 22in 8h10t. We're going on the road. Are you able to weave towels and thicker items or is not sturdy for hard beating? Thank you!!!!

  • @maryannerick7617

@@jiggyfun807 These looms are plenty sturdy, it's the hard beat that requires a heavier loom. Rugs, in particular, require a hard beat. Without it, you end up with a sleazy product that cannot take the life of a rug. As for towels, it would depend on the type of towel. Kitchen towels are a joy and the Harrisville turns out great results. Heavier towels are also possible. Using heavier yarn would produce a heavier towel. These looms can accommodate heavier yarns; it's the heavy beat required for rugs that require a heavy loom.

@@maryannerick7617 Hi Mary, I'm loving my HD 8 shaft. I've done a few door size rag rugs on it this year,(nothing big) , I had to put the shelf foam under the front legs to stop it from walking, but it worked pretty good. I just saw a 12shaft /14H kessenich foldable jack loom for sale that I'm super interested in, but it's 2200 & I already have two looms so I guess I have to get rid of one to get another!!! Wishing you all best this year, Happy 2020

@@jiggyfun807 The timing of when you change sheds can also help pack the weft in. Rags will pack in better than a springy, heavy yard, too. Because we have wall-to-wall carpeting, I was not concerned with weaving throw rugs although they sure are nice to have by doorways to the outside.

  • @DoloresJacobs

Hello, yes the HD 4 or 8 shaft loom is a floor loom and you can weave blankets on it. The weaving width is 36" so to weave a blanket you need to either weave two or three separate panels then sew them together or weave double. This is a way to weave two panels at the same time and join them together on one side. When you take it off the loom it opens up to be double the width of your loom. If you want to weave mostly blankets, look into wider width looms. Harrisville Designs does make a 60" wide loom and you can find other companies who have wide looms as well.

The Harrisville 36/8 has the capability of weaving 144" width in plain weave. Just keep your mind on what you're doing! Turn off the phone! Also keep in mind a 36" weaving width on the loom will not produce a 36" fabric. You have draw-in and shrinkage that must be taken into consideration. This is where double weaving comes in. I highly recommend Jennifer Moore's book on double weave. She's a good teacher and there's also a CD that she puts out that's a big help. Check on Amazon.

Exactly, More dents means they are closer together and you would want a thinner yarn.

  • @DoloresJacobs

Hi, HD makes 2 wood pieces that clamp to the back beam of the loom. They hold 4 dowel rods. You put the dowels in the warp like lease sticks in a cross. As the warp is cranked onto the back beam, when warping Front to Back, it creates drag on the warp. Since I warp alone, it is like having a helping hand to keep tension on the warp. Here is the link to HD webpage if you want to look at them. harrisville.com/collections/weave/products/tensioning-device-floor-loom

Dolores Jacobs, thanks! I think I've seen those but didn't know what they were. I also warp alone front to back, but I attach the warp to water jugs and drag them across the floor. It works, but it's a little odd, I guess!

I want to weave blankets what size reed and harrisville loom should I buy?

  • @DoloresJacobs

    @DoloresJacobs

    Жыл бұрын

The age old answer is, “it depends”. How wide do you want your blankets? You can weave Double Weave and weave twice the width of your loom but, double weave is easy to make errors and the weaving is slower. You can weave panels and join them together to get a wider width. If you can get, and have room, HD makes a 60” loom. I would get a loom as wide as possible for blankets. As for the reed, the width should fit the loom you have. Dents per inch on the reed will be determined by the type of yarn or thread you want to weave. Sorry I can’t give you a more definitive answer but, there are so many variables to weaving a blanket.
