Why I CAN'T Recommend the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 (On-Location). The King of Versatility!

When it comes to using the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 lens for flash photography, it was a love hate experience due to its variable aperture. While the lens's wide aperture range can be beneficial for achieving shallow depth of field in certain situations, the variable aperture can pose challenges when using flash. In my thorough test in this real world photoshoot, not having a consistent exposure and flash output is a headache. This results in inconsistent lighting and overexposed or underexposed images. This inconsistency can be frustrating and time-consuming, requiring adjustments and multiple attempts to achieve the desired result. Therefore, if reliable and consistent flash photography is an important aspect of your work, you may want to consider other lenses that offer a fixed aperture.

This is my lens I use for everything, I'm pretyping this before I even watch this, because I'm ready to fight for my lens lol I set my aperature to 2.8 and whenever I zoom anywhere it stays at 2.8 instead of dropping below that but for almost everything except for in studio I'm shooting around 50 mm or more great video as always

Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having the ability to be F2 if all you shoot is 2.8?

This was gonna be my response to this video. Brandon I love your work but you literally used this lens like a prime lens where most of your shots were full body and the same focal range. The versatility is in the actual range of the camera. Shooting it like a prime and not using the whole range actually defeats the purpose. The f2 is when you need that lot light but with flash either pay attention to the fstop and adjust accordingly or keep it at f2.8 and use the lens for the amount of different ranges you have at your disposal. Just my thoughts for everyone else get this lens cause it’s just that good

@@marcusgregory9571 Thank you for the response. Actually the versatility is the ABILITY to go from 35mm up to 150mm. Not surpass what it's made for just to shoot at 70-150mm. Sometimes I shot at 35, 50, 70, 100. You cannot tell what focal length I was at. Because some shots I put in was full body, some was not, but again, they were NOT at 35mm. I used the zoom whether it be at 35 or 150. The point still remains, whether you shoot at 35, 50, 70, 100, 125, the aperture is variable. As a photographer who shoots on location constantly, I dont have time to PAY ATTENTION to my f-stop at every focal length. You also dont buy this lens just to leave it at F2.8. If thats the case you are losing 50% of the ability of this lens and what it was made for. I never said one time the lens was bad. It is the King when it comes to versatility . I also said it was snappy and super fast. I would NOT recommend this lens to flash photographers. Thats it

@@BrandonColePhotography You really cant say you dont recommend it to studio/flash photographers. It really depends on the style. Most studio/flash photographers dont even shoot everything wide open. They range their aperture between f4-f11, so this lens is literally the perfect lens for those types of flash photographers. But i get your point about the variable aperture, its just a blanket statement though.

You are correct with pretty much everything you said. When i bought this lens, i used it and then returned it because i didnt like adjusting. It makes for the best studio, wedding, event lens by far so i think i will be buying it again no doubt.

It’s definitely not a studio lens unless you put it on 2.8 and keep it there. But for events (both photo and video), court side sports, weddings, travel etc… it’s an all around quality beast. I kind of wish Tamron kept it lighter and just kept it at 35-150 f2.8 or even 28-150 f2.8 but kept it around 900g like the new Sony 70-200 f4 macro… I also rather have OSS in the lens than the f2 at 35mm for that I have my 35 GM 1.4 🤷🏻‍♂️
