Why I bought the Nikon FM2

Ойын-сауық

A quick overview of what I think is the best overall 35mm film camera. There are more advanced cameras out there, but the mechanical tactility and utilitarian function combine to make this a joy to use.

    As some people wrote about the paper craft, they are origami cranes. Also, there is a Japanese expression "origami tsuki", or attached with origami, which means quality guaranteed.

    I have a Nikon FM which I purchased back in 1980. When the FM2's came out; gave that model some consideration as an 'upgrade' but really have no need for the extra features of the FM2 over the FM. So I hung onto my FM it is a wonderful camera it has never let me down..the entire FM line is excellent (except the FM10). Whenever I'm out and about with my FM I get comments from other film camera users about my nice old Nikon. Congratulations on your purchase.

    Thank you :) you know, in terms of build quality, the FM has more metal than the FM2n (around the lens mount). I was half thinking of getting an FM, but I can't really justify having too many cameras, as some would end up not getting used. But yeah, the FM line is great!

    Nice review of an incredible camera. I studied photography using one of the Pentax K1000 provided by the College I was in. Then I became a long time Olympus fan (OM1, OM2n, OM4). During this time I flirted with various RFs, Voigtländer to be precise. Then, one day, my sister gave me her Nikon FE2, camera I completely felt in love with. Fast-forward a couple of years, a friend lent me his FM2 and that was the moment I really felt in love. I am now looking for one, hoping to get one not badly beaten up. Again, it truly is one incredible camera. Besides, you can't go wrong with fully mechanical bodies.

    hi there, I also have a FM2N camera in almost mint condition which when you consider it could be up to 20 years old. The n-type made from 1985 to 2001 added a titanium top plate and the 250th scyn speed. payed around the same as you and love it. my local camera world shop has some great second hand nikon deals. which I like to collect the old unloved nikons ( ie cheap ) . I seem to buy cameras between the end of film and the start of digital. For example a nikon F70 for £65 it would have cost around £300 new amazing! . at the moment I have the F60 F-601 F-801s and also a nikon fit fuji S3-pro. my full camera is a D300s thanks for the cool video ☺

    While a Canon shooter from way back in the 70s, I played with the FM2 and F3 back in the late 80s, when I was teetering on switching to Nikon. Bottom line, Nikon's FM2s were tanks as well as the F3, but the switch from Nikon to Canon would had been too costly. In hindsight I am glad that I did not make the switch, given Canon's superior EF (autofocus) lens lineup launched a year earlier (though it would be another year for the fully pro AF slr the EOS 1 in '89' would launch). BTW, you mentioned the Pentax K-1000, I cut my photographic teeth on the K-1000, despite the issues with the meter, it was a great camera and a great learning tool. Someone once referenced the K-1000 as the Volkswagen of cameras, while the FM2 was a Mercedes, rather apropos..

  • @robiulahmed

    @robiulahmed

    8 жыл бұрын

    For sure, Canon led the way in terms of automation. One of the main reasons I went with Nikon was because of the lenses I already had for the D90 DSLR. I also like the idea that film cameras are fully mechanical. It's kind of like appreciating mechanical watches in today's World of quartz. As for the K1000, apart from the delicate light meter, the rest of it has a more substantial feeling than the FM2, from the resistance of the crank to the mirror/shutter mechanism. However, I'm convinced the mirror/shutter is deliberately "softer" on the Nikon to eliminate shutter shock. Also, the K1000 doesn't have depth of field preview, self timer or a split prism focusing screen. I've found the K1000 to have quite tricky focusing in some conditions, for whatever reason. I'd say the VW and Mercedes analogy is quite accurate :)

    It definitely looks like film is making a comeback. When digital came around, it was the convenience that hooked people. Eventually, people realised that film had its own signature look that we all took for granted in the days of film. The clean digital look that was so novel at the same has become a bit too generic, to the point that many people emulate the look of film digitally. I feel that film is better when it comes to portraits, street and family pictures, whilst digital is better for landscapes. Anywho...enjoy your newly found camera :)

    Well I have had a sea change, I bought a DSLR 3 years ago to start using my legacy Nikon glass again but I have hated it. The photos look sterile and lifeless. My new little Leica X provides stunning images that are so alive and has essentially has become my main camera. I have now replaced my DSLR kit completely by buying a Panasonic GX7 a superzoom and 2 primes. The Nikon glass is of course well employed servicing my lovely old black FM2n. I wont buy another DSLR. Next year its a return to basics and a lot of fun ;-)

    I have the 28mm f2.8, it's a really nice lens. I think overall 35mm is a better compromise. If you can get hold of the 35mm f2 d, that'll suit your needs well. Alternatively, you can go the premium route and get yourself a Zeiss, but that'll cost a bit more. Zeiss don't make a bad lens. Thanks for watching and enjoy the camera :)

    LOST IN A FRAME Out of those, I think the fm3a is the most versatile choice. It's basically an fm2 with aperture priority. Some people would rather go with the F3, as it's modular and looks cool, but for me, battery independent is the way to go.

    They need the D lenses (ones with the aperture ring). Lenses like the G and E and electronically controlled, so they won't word. D lenses are still available, though. Also, modern Zeiss lenses work, if you're willing to pay the premium.

    I got an FM2N today at a thrift store in "as-is" condition for $9.00 US! (Actually it was FREE because I used a gift certificate to pay.) I almost passed on it because the shutter was jammed and the zoom lens was wonky. The viewfinder showed a weird horizontal bar. I removed the lens and found the focusing screen jammed behind the mirror. After I extracted the screen, the shutter seems okay, even sounds like it's close to specs. Now I've reinstalled the focusing screen (not a split image or microprism-huh) and will put some film through it as soon as I get a better lens. This one is still wonky. But because it's so clean, i think the camera was primarily used for copy work-basically it had a cushy indoor job before someone went digital.

    That AF lens look horrible on an FM2n. That being said, it's not just a very good camera, it's quite possibly the very best fully-mechanical SLR ever made. I've had mine for about fifteen years now, and it has proved itself to be more reliable than any of the F2s I've owned (which have quite a reputation for robustness themselves). Mine has spent time in everything from sandy deserts to humid swamps, it's been dropped a million times, and yet it still works like new and takes perfect pictures every frame.

  • @robiulahmed

    Yeah, it's not the traditional look that you'd expect, but it does take good photos. In my opinion, the Zeiss Milvus lenses somehow look great on this - the black and white lettering with the retro/modern contrasting make it a very interesting looking combo.

    Nothing wrong with how it looks. Not relevant anyway, as nikon users, were blessed with the ability to fit modern lenses to our old cameras. do you think the nikon FM2 would be a good first camera for a beginner? and is it easy to learn?

  • @robiulahmed

    @robiulahmed

    8 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely! It's a step up from the point and shoot film cameras as you have more control. It's kind of easy to learn as the exposure LEDs help you to select the most appropriate shutter speed for the given aperture, and then all you have to worry about is the focusing. I'd say, the hardest thing about this camera is loading the film! One word of advice, though, use the depth of field preview to get an idea of what the best aperture setting is. The temptation is to shoot wide open (lowest f number), but doing this makes the depth of field quite narrow. The trick is to have the lowest f number whilst still keeping the subjects in focus. If you want to go down the easy route to film photography, high end point and shoots are also good. Things like the Contax t3 (has a Zeiss lens) and the Nikon 35ti are really good and have aperture priority mode, but they're as expensive as the FM2 and not nearly as reliable. The FM2 is like a tank.

    Yes. It is a compact camera that you can use for a very long time like a Leica. The meter is also very accurate and I have shot 1000s of shots of slide film with these cameras in addition to negative film. Only negative is the viewfinder is not as good as an F3HP but perfectly useable but I like the light weight along with a normal or wide angle lens.

  • @robiulahmed

    @robiulahmed

    7 жыл бұрын

    FM2 100%. The FE has an electrical circuit board, which whilst reliable, could fail, at which point the camera becomes useless. The FM2 is fully mechanical, meaning it's more reliable and can be repaired. more easily. It would also work in extremely cold conditions (like in Antarctica / the peak of Mount Everest) where battery operated devices either stop working or perform poorly. In addition to all of that, I feel that the fully manual way of taking a picture embodies the ethos of film photography more than a camera that has automatic modes. When you make a nice picture, it's more down to you rather than the camera. I will admit, though, having aperture priority, the FE would be quicker to use, so you may get a shot that you'd otherwise miss on the FM2. If you want the best of both Worlds, get the FM3a, but that's going to cost you. With the FM2, you get a beautiful, reliable camera in which you don't need to worry about batteries.

    Here's a comparison chart with all the various Nikon cameras of that type: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/fe/fe-fm-comparisons.htm My opinion still stands - the FM2 is the best buy. If you want aperture priority mode, it's worth paying a bit extra for the FM3a. Bear in mind, these cameras are getting a bit old, and it's not easy to find someone that will repair the old circuit boards if they're a bit faulty. However, that's just my opinion. The FE2 is a fine camera. Technically, making the shutter electronic means it's timed more accurately, too. Go to ebay and do searches for both, and buy the one which is in the best condition. Whichever you choose, you won't be disappointed. I personally feel that the FM2 is better than a Leica M6.

    The FM2n was manufactured till about 2001. I've got a late 90's example that will likely (with proper care and maintenance) last me another 20 or 30 years! I'm already "stockpiling" some old, crippled bodies for parts, should that become necessary. The younger folks, who do not have the advantage of the kind of proper Education we got when I was a kid, just do not understand the laws of physics, and how they relate to anything stored on Digital media. Suffice it to say, it won't last! Experience and experiments done in Japan show that, all your "photos" stored on any electronic media will be so degraded in 20 or 30 years, as to be useless! After 50 years? Forget it. It all relates to our Earth's changing magnetic field, the dynamics of what happens in the atmosphere during Solar flares, not to mention Thunder Storms! All local electromagnetic changes work to destroy your "Digital Data". And that is just a fact of Science.

    Fully agree. Years after I bought this camera, it's still my most used. I barely use my digital cameras for photography any more. I've recently bought a Nikon F2 and I'm currently waiting in line to get it serviced by Sover Wong. I think you'd like that camera, too. It's a tank.

    The FM2n *is* an FM2. The designated 'N' appears ahead of the serial number on the upper rear of the body.
