I dont know why everybody is so in love with 4K video on a top end DSLR. I would never shoot any video with a camera like that! I wish camera companies would offer me a top end stills only camera so it can be optimized for stills and none of that video nonsense.

+Matt Granger I think everybody pretty much wants one of these beauties. I am a Canon "shooter", but I still wish to own one. I simply cannot justify the cost, since it costs a fortune and I'm not making any money with it. I keep thinking about certain key features that I would use myself, and wonder if the manufacturers would leave these out from the package then it might get affordable for me as well. So I think that's where that comment is coming from :)

+opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ It is Nikons flagship camera, there is absolutely no reason for it not to have 4K video with no time limits, especially in a body this size. It does not compromise the camera at all. Canon made a similar mistake with theirs by shooting MJPEG only not to mention the stupid mix of memory card formats which is unacceptable on a 9k pro body.

Hi Matt, I love your stuff. I own the D5 and while I agree it has many improvements over the D4s the lower dynamic range at low ISO's is significant. Pushing the shadows produces much more noise than on the D750, D810, and D4s.

The 1DX MKII uses MJPEG for video which is easier for the camera to encode. This helps to reduce the heat produced by the camera and allows for longer record times without heat issues.

at 3:00 I was so happy to see that they use the same battery as my D4s... now they are interchangeable for me and the charger is the same also! Glad you got one Matt, I had someone last weekend come up to me, look at my D5 with a sour face and she said "you need to catch up with the times and go mirrorless with Sony" It was my first wedding with the D5 and didn't enjoy learning that I wasn't up with the times. You made me feel better Matt.. thanks! I did go with the double CF version though, as I had so many CF cards on the shelf. Nikon assured me that IF I ever want to change to XQD, that that module will swap out, no problem. So... there you have it. I wasn't super happy about the ISO and MODE button relocation... but I'm sure I'll get used to that. Very pleased with all other aspects. Thanks again for your excellent videos!

+Frederick Dunn If you re-read my comment, I said that the D2Xs, D3 and D3s all use the same battery. The D4 series introduced a NEW battery. The D5 uses the same battery as the D4. Perhaps I should have clarified it a little bit more and said that there was a slight increase in capacity. The D4 and D5 both use a type of battery called EN-EL 18. That has happened in both types of batteries. EN-EL4 ( 4a), and EN-EL 18 ( 18a). Now, are we clear ?.

the a7r ii takes less than 2 seconds to start up, AF is amazingly quick with some Canon lenses focusing faster on the a7r ii than Canon and provably so. it's just not built for speed. it's not. anyone ever expecting speed would be sorely disappointed. The uncompressed RAW files are 85MB each.If you fire off 5/second you've just jammed 500MB down your camera's throat in under a second. Expect that to take a while to clear through the buffer. lol. I find the a7r ii tracking to be terrific for my needs. Everyone's needs will be particular to them, though with the correct AF settings and native lenses, i think it would suffice for most people except the most ardent sports and event shooters. For video? It's open and shut Sony though the Panasonic GH4 is bloody terrific.

+trevorpinnocky Being able to fire a rapid succession of files, focus fast in low light and not being hindered by the laggy performance is what makes such DSLRs a better choice. I have shot with both Sony DSLRs, SLTs and E-mount Mirrorless. Even Sony's own DSLR -a850 runs circles around their new cameras when it comes to ease and speed of operation. Update a900 with the new sensor, fast AF and better shutter and it will sell like hot cakes.

nice review, only comment I have to make is regarding to the time of recording in 4k, for me as I'm amateur photographer and using videos not very often 3 minutes is more then I need, I use my gopro black 4 and each video doesn't exceed 2 minutes I guess but if I would buy a d5, spent relatively a lot of money I would expect something more for the price I pay especially if you compare your experience with canon or few other makes, d5 is premium market device and in these days you would expect more from it

Don't you have the D810? Im surprised that you prefer the D5 for travelling than the D810. I have both a7r2 and D810, for my needs I don't really need so many fps, and I like to take the extra Mpxl and ISO over that fps. For video well... It's not as useful as the A7 anyway, the features are not the same so no need to talk about i think. But for the choice of the D5 over the D810, especially travelling and/or studio... i feel it strange (just a personal opinion)

Just place the D5 on order as I trading in my D4 as it served me well. I also like I said before I have the D810 I use that camera when out with friends doing artistic shots at night with long exposures. As you mention Megapixels sizes as the D4 was 16 and the D810 is 36 but when I shooting for my client as well as some magazines the 36MP resolution is to large for their needs as I found this out when I shot with the D810 and sent in the images at full size. So MP to me I am not chasing the Sony or another high MP camera I want a camera that is built like a tank like my D4 as it still on it's original shutter with over 350,000 cycles and it's still going strong. I have a D700 and it's shutter was replaced so it's on my shelf with a new shutter as a backup camera and I had a D300 and D200 as well far back as the D70s and D70 and all had to have a new shutter put in. Oh and the D810 it came with a defective shutter which lasted 4 months and I had to send it back for repair ... SO I can tell you for fact shutters don't like me so I need a camera that is built like a tank :) Video is important to you as you do lot's of video but I am afraid if I did a video I would get chased off of KZread :)

The Canon 1D-C and 1DX-II need specialized heat pipe mated to their sensor backing plate together with a dedicated remote heat sink ( also dissipating heat through the body ) that siphon away the heat through the heatpipe so the heat issue might very well be true. Dedicated Cine camera like BMCC and Sony FS series and Canon's XC-10 need to use active cooling , I would wager this will be a major design hurdle any of future hybrid will be needing to resolve. Especially for those who are intended to do Video right without the 30 min limitation

+Matt Granger I'm not sure Nikon D5 can make it to 20min. or 30min. video, even through firmware update. You cannot compare it to the canon 1DX MkII or 1DC in that regard. The canon is utilizing liquid cooling which helps to keep temperature down. The Nikon does not offer this.

This looks to be a great new product. As a still shooter who has no need for video I wish the major manufacturers made 2 versions, one with 4K at a more reasonable length for guys like you who need it and one with no video whatsoever (hopefully cheaper) for guys like me. I have 2 bodies and have shot over 17,000 pics over the past 2 years and never once turned on the video....not once...

The number you quoted for the XQD card is the read speed. The more important number is the WRITE speed, that is what is used in the camera itself. Read speed is used when transferring pictures OFF of the card (on to the computer). On these cards in this capacity Read/Write speed is 440/400MB/s respectively. On these cards both numbers are quite fast but on the slower format cards such as CF and SD these numbers are often drastically different, especially on Lexar cards. You aren't the only person to quote the read xfer number so I'm certainly not singling you out, just something to address in future mentions of speeds.

+Mark Acevedo I should also say that USB 3 transfer speed maxes out at 640MB/s theoretical (real life is always less) but should be able to handle 440MB/s read without a problem. USB 2 however will NOT read from these cards at full speed, this technology is limited to 60MB/s THEORETICAL. So if anyone does use these cards make sure your card reader is USB 3 or you'll be wasting a lot of speed and time!

Canon 1DX2 can do 4k for 30 mins is because the use of Motion JPG. There are ZERO compression happening internally in camera, therefore no heat outputs.

Matt, Nikon has already stated that there is (or soon will be) a firmware update for the D5 to have it match the D500 in terms of 4K video for up to 30 minutes in 3-min segments.

Hi! Love your previews and was wondering if you could help me? I'm looking for a camera that has 30mp or more, HD video recording with slow motion capture along with a minimum of 20mins recording time per session. 10 or more FPS. Dual high capacity transfer rated memory card slots. A high buffer capacity to assist with FPS and a swivel / tilt LCD touchscreen. Any ideas?

Something odd for me is I've owned a few pairs of high-end headphones (well below the cost of this camera) and they all come in really fancy boxes. My HE-500's came in a wood and faux-leather box with a padded insert. Looked lovely. This just comes in cardboard... For the price they could throw in a better box, surely.

For the video you could add an atomos shotgun for example on the top of your D5, that would help a lot to record longer videos. Besides Atomos is an australian company

Good video Matt. Lots of comments below are typical of the Ford, Holden mentality. A camera is just a tool, brand loyalty is so misguided. For the majority of us the manufacturers don't show us their loyalty so why in hell should we defend them so vigorously. I started as a Nikon shooter, and have recently added to my toolkit with Fuji glass and bodies. I totally agree with your observations of mirrorless systems they are slower, and if you are a pro then this i am sure would be a limiting factor. I still maintain both systems and love each for its positive attributes, but both are not ideal. Get over it and shoot. Anyway thanks for the many hours of great content. Cheers

this is a sports or action camera... in normal and other scenarios (shooting models, shooting as close to base iso as possible, using strobes, using tripods, planning your shots and taking time - the kind of work that Matt is doing) this camera is worse than d610 (yea - I said it D5 IQ at sub 1600iso is worse than 4 year old chepest FX sensor)... I do not get why normal photographers (not sports and paparazzis) think they need it... why they start to rationalize that they suddenly need 14 fps, instant focus with multiple advanced tracking options and 100+ raw buffer (what your models is gonna run away ???)... I guess price tag says to them something like: "I am x2 as expensive as anything else out there - so I must be better"

I'm a former Canon, current Sony user and had the opportunity to handle the D5 a couple months back. It is unlike anything I've ever operated. If I were more of a photographer, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Regarding the video though, the Nikon rep / presenter agreed that Nikon doesn't have a whole lot of r&d for video production as their company entirely focuses on photographic cameras and optics. This is unlike Canon, Sony, or Panasonic, who have had a long history of professional and semi-professional camcorders. There are still many other things that don't add up with video, but it's not really why people are going to buy this camera. Regardless, I agree with you Matt, it will probably be a firmware update down the road.
