Why I Became A Brewer | Erik Hystad | TEDxHelena
The story of one moving from being a teacher to a brewer.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was the beer that turned Erik Hystad onto Craft Beer. He was raised in a blue-collar home of die hard Bud Light drinkers, who would enjoy a Corona with a lime on special occasions. As the craft beer revolution grew, so did Erik’s love for the new and interesting flavors in craft beer. After dabbling in home brewing for a few years, Erik decided to go pro and joined the production team at Blackfoot River Brewing Company as an assistant brewer in 2012. He became a brewer in 2013 and still works there today. When he is not at the Blackfoot working or enjoying a beer with friends, Erik loves hiking and biking on the Helena trail system with his dog Pokey, his wife Steph and his new son Thor.

What a legend. I'm actually just now starting a new career as an assistant brewer, literally after passing up continuing school for a teaching degree. This is what I needed to see.

I just got out of the Army and ive been so lost and troubled with what to do with my life. I had a thought while talking to my father about how our family used to have a brewery in Germany before ww1. Becoming a brewer sounds like an incredible fulfilling job! This is the first time something has called for me! I have been doing alot of reading and hope to use my GI bill to get a degree to start my path in the brewing industry.
Awesome. I am a martial arts instructor and home brewer. One of my students opened a brewery and asked me to brew for him. I start this week!

I just finished my last freelance editing job to pursue brewing. Applied, got the gig after home-brewing for a while, and tomorrow is my first day at the brewery. This was so close to home for me and really confirmed that I made the right choice. Follow your folly.

How’s it been so far? I’ve been home brewing for about 1.5 years now and have been wanting to pursue working at a brewery, I’m still in school but I definitely want to get a job within this field before graduating, any tips ?

I think brewing is fascinated, Even I'm not a brewer. I only sell brewing equipment, but to know some brewing technology already make me attracted.
As a current college student majoring in math and physics education but who also likes homebrewing, I thought this was very interesting
I share Erik's thoughts and feelings about being a brewer, just like him i can't dance, sing, paint, etc., and brewing is the best way (so far) i can express myself, moreover, i can share/sell what i brew and immediately notice the impact of what i did.

I just turned 20 and wasn’t interested in anything until I heard about brewing beer I love alcohol lol so I can definitely see myself doing this and loving it will I need a bachelors or at least an associates to get started or what do you recommend?

You're not alone. I'm just about to walk away from a cushy job as a software engineer to pursue brewing. Got a hit on a brewers assistant job at a local brewery just a few hours ago :)
