Why I Apply Milorganite Fertilizer Before Summer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It's memorial day weekend in the US and today I wanted to touch on why I apply milorganite fertilizer around memorial day before the summer months. Milorganite has a slow release formula that naturally breaks down and feeds the yard slowly during the hot summer months when we don't want to push too much top growth while the grass is stressed. It also gives us a little boost of iron and is very easy to use without fear of burning the lawn.

    Like u delving into Northern grasses, and soil. Probably most overlooked two things in most fertilizer reviews. I like Milorganite because it is slow release, non-burning, contains small iron amount for greenup (if it contained a lot more Iron, I would not need to buy Ironite and Milorganite I would use exclusively.) Mostly like it because it is natural, good for the environment and cheap vs. big brand fertilizers, which i use occassionally.

    The lawn is looking good and it looks like your new shed is coming along pretty well too. One of the things I like about Milorganite is it fairly cheap I get it here in Alabama for 12.95 a bag which makes it very affordable.

    The green up and growth with Milorganite aren't as dramatic or immediate as with a synthetic fertilizer but I've never burnt my lawn either, no matter how much I put down. So it's very forgiving for those of you who are hesitant and does work very well over time. I can clearly see the difference between my lawn and the neighbor's

    Was just about to comment on that. Looks like he's using a drop spreader but thinks he has a rotary spreader. Based on the perimeter square in the left side of his front lawn, I'd say the dark green was the intended effect. Maybe milorganite , but I'm guessing Ironite because its so dramatic

    In August here in Oklahoma, my spreader full of Milo hit a rut and I dumped a huge amount on my Bermuda grass in one spot. I tried to pick up all I could but still left a huge amount behind. That spot stayed green throughout the winter. When I scalped the yard in April I saw a lot of unused Milo pellets still there. Now late May, it’s still the lushest spot in my yard. I use a 50# manual reel mower and I still have to make a strong run at it to get the mower through it. I’m sold on Milo for life. I’ve showed it to my few DIY neighbors and they’re now sold on it, too. (btw, for any readers in central Ok, one of the few places I’ve found with early season fertilizer in roughly a 4-1-2 ratio is a custom blend sold at TLC garden center, and it’s very reasonably priced).

    I definitely agree on the early fertilization. I put milorganite down mid March and ringer down mid april. I have mowed twice in 3 days and I was still mowing over the 1/3 rule. Its is impossible to keep up with if you don't have free time all day every day. Luckily, things have started to slow a tad and I can now every 4-5 days.

    I put down my first ever application of Milorganite today, right afterwards we got a decent rain, so hopefully see some good results soon. I total killed my yard about 8-9 years ago, killed off bermuda, weeds mixed with some grass, and while it looks fairly decent, I'd like to get it better, and a darker green. I'm in the Midwest, and planted a tall fescue. I've noticed some brown spots recently, so maybe the fert helps out. I enjoy your videos, thanks.

    Ryan, I planted new grass seed ten days ago. I overseeded a patchy lawn that was lush in some places, sparse in others. i put down topsoil on the sparse spots before seeding. I'm seeing it come up - in some spots better than others. In places where it was already lush, you can imagine the grass is getting high after ten days of not mowing. Question: how long should I wait to mow? Also, should I put down Milorganite after it starts filling in, and if so, when? Thanks, and your videos are a huge help to me.

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    @ryanknorrlawncare

    6 жыл бұрын

    I always try to wait as long as possible to mow but sometimes it's hard when the existing grass gets really tall. You can kind of test it by lightly pulling on some of the new grass and see if it is rooting into the ground. Sometimes you'll be surprised that it can be pretty small but still pretty rooted into the ground and you can mow very carefully and not hurt anything. You can put down milorganite at any time.

    If my turf is stressed or going dormant I personally don't put any down at that point, but mine hasn't had much rain since I applied and is actually a little stressed right now and it will still be fine. The stuff breaks down very slowly so if it's not getting the right conditions, it will kind of wait that out.

Yes I did the Milo app three times @ 11 on my scotts edge guard. I did it all in the same afternoon to see if I could burn the grass. I was thinking about killing this grass for concrete, its a side piece that serves no purpose.... It looks better, fuller, and thicker than the entire lawn. And to start it was the worst..... Hi there my friend, I’m new to this and I’d like to use milorganite. Do I have to apply lime before or after the milorganite? Or do I have to apply weed killer first? Please help thanks.

    No need for lime or weed killer necessary in conjunction with the milorganite but if you have issues that require those things you can do that separately. You can dig through some of my old stuff to see where to start or follow along this year and I'll be continued to explain the process of lawns as we go through the season.

    What number do you set your spreader to? Do you follow the recommendation on the bag? I have the Scotts Edgeguard Mini and the bag setting is 11.5 but it feels like it comes out way too fast.

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    It should be coming out pretty fast because the whole bag only covers 2500 sq ft for the bag rate. Around 11 was where I was at but it will also depend on your walk speed to some degree.

    I've worked to get my grass thick enough that I really only have a few issues with clover. Otherwise the rest of the weeds are crowded out because of the thickness of the grass. Years ago I just used simple weed b gone otherwise for small areas.

    Is milorganite better than Scott's? I have excellent results with Scott's and I only need 2 bags. Milorganite I would need 10 bags. Plus Scott's is half the price for my lawn size.

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    @ryanknorrlawncare

    6 жыл бұрын

    Scotts feeds the grass just fine. The difference really is that you're feeding the grass but not really building up the soil. With milorganite it takes natural activity in the soil to break down the fertilizer and that improves soil quality overall. How much? I really can't say as I'm not a scientist but you're not doing anything wrong with Scotts, it's just different.

  • @TheLawnStripes

    @TheLawnStripes

    6 жыл бұрын

    I used Scott's for a couple years. It just didn't seem to do as good, for me at least. The lawn didn't green as much and the lawn wasn't as thick. Weeds were also a problem, partially due to lack of lawn thickness Also keep in mind that Scott's is synthetic and if you try to put more down than recommended, you can burn the lawn.

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    I am usually around 11-12 but if you're not running it out for the area you should be covering, probably walking a little too fast. The problem with spreader settings is that it's also a lot about walk speed.

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    Nope not too late at all. If you have warm season grass, which would be likely, then fertilizing in the summer is fine. Either way this won't hurt anything.

    If I understand correctly, the only reason you're putting Milo down is that you didn't feed your lawn back in the early spring? I put down starter fertilizer early spring (per LCN video), does that mean I should lay off the Milo till mid summer?

  • @ryanknorrlawncare

    @ryanknorrlawncare

    6 жыл бұрын

    No right now is fine. The reason I didn't put anything down until now is because of years of proper fall fertilization. That leaves me with enough nitrogren to carry me to this point of the year without needing much else.
