I think most people didn't understand something: Hayden Christensen was SUPPOSED to play Anakin an awkward way. He was basically a monk who lived in strict celibacy for 10 years and now feels love for the first time in his live. Of course he's awkward.

Narratively an awkward Anakin doesn't really fit into his arc to becoming Darth Vader. But let's assume that was the case, most of his lines are flat and convey little emotion, that's what people found awkward.

Rotten Tomatoes is made up of about 90% incompetent reviewers who probably base their reviews on pre-release screeners, and 10% of credible film reviewers. I actually don't listen to film critics anymore. They, like most people, bring their own personal baggage to their reviews. If I want to see a movie, I will see it regardless of what anyone says. Best to decide for yourself.

Using Rotten Tomatoes as a reliable source is like using Wikipedia to write an essay. Just don't do it. Hayden was incredible as Anakin; he portrayed all the internal battles the character suffered and made me sympathize with his downfall. Truly a tragic hero.

I agree, i never use rotten tomatoes to decide if I should watch it or not. If I like the title, I’ll watch it and decide for myself. All their low scores even for the rise of sky walker and rouge one didn’t make me not watch them. I like every single Star Wars movie that’s ever been made...Besides. It figures why the scores are so low on a Rotten cause the people that give them low scores are like 90-100 years old so of course any new style of movies they won’t like it unless it’s an 60s-70s style movie

So basically it was his choice. In my opinion, he was pretty wise and level headed. He didn't want fame, he enjoyed filming, but he was also just a normal person who wants regular life. To choose that over money, drugs, fame, and spotlight is pretty wise. I'm happy for him.

Hayden was awesome in Episode 3. The fanbase is just too blind and dumb to see it. His acting was good, he delivered bad, bad lines surprisingly well and he was a cool looking young Vader. Also, he had good chemistry with Ewan's Obi Wan. The fact that SW ruined his career sucks on so many levels.

U see that especially in scenes where there is little to no talking. The attack on the jedi temple is a prime example of that which is regarded as one of the best scenes in the movie.

Ewan McGregor seem to have done fine. Liam Neeson seem have done fine. Natalie Portman seems to be fine. Christopher Lee...Samuel L. Jackson...you get the point. Lucas made a lot of strange directing decision...I'll grant you that...but Hayden's career wasn't ruined by Lucas. His portrayal of Anakin Skywalker did him in. "I don't like sand...it's coarse, it's rough, and irritating. And it gets everywhere..." AAHHHHH!!!! That scene still makes me cringe!

D Bee any director would tell Hayden that his delivery was forced and un natural to the scene but Lucas doesn't care about acting he's too worried about his story arc and whatever details he tried to explore in the prequel trilogy ...DiCaprio wasn't an oscar off his own acting he had guidance and advice from many directors in the film industry You can't throw a nice young actor in a Star Wars movie with no guidance and expect for the story to be told with well executed acting

Hayden isn’t a bad actor at all. He was great at showing emotion and intensity. It’s no secret though that some of the dialogue was pretty bad. I’m glad Hayden is getting the live he deserves after being on Kenobi

His acting in the prequels was brilliant, idk what the critics were watching but Anakin's descent into madness and the dark side was portrayed almost perfectly. Idk why the critics blamed Hayden for his role when he was pretty damn good, it was just the writing that downgraded the movies a bit.

Exactly. I just wanted to write the same. For me the prequel SW trilogy is the best feat in the franchise owing to his perfect performance as Anakin.

Hayden is an amazing actor. He did a phenomenal job in awake, Star Wars, life as a house, and jumper. Super under-rated actor

watching this after TROS, no one could’ve played Anakin better than Hayden. he’s genuinely the chosen one

No Leonard DiCaprio was, who was basically playing Anakin/Vader in the Man in the Iron Mask. Vader's personality was entirely different from Prequel Anakin's even the Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. Hayden didn't exude the confidence to be a great Jedi Knight and eventually Vader. Both Clone Wars series depicted Anakin better.

Hayden was so good no matter what people say. He matches Anakins struggle to figure out what he wanted. He made me feel emotion when he turned to the dark side and revenge of the sith is my favorite movie

The prequels actually had really good casting, Haden was perfect for the part. It was really terrible directing that made their performances go bad. Don't believe me? Well think about this: During the prequels George Lucas got SAMUEL L. JACKSON to speak in monotone. *LUCAS GOT A GUY FAMOUS FOR HIS CHARISMATIC SHOUTING TO SPEAK IN BLAND MONOTONE*. And Haden seemed like such a nice guy.

Captain Skater I think the prequels are shit movies but the time period is cool. It’s just the bad writing really. The Clone Wars TV show and Battlefront 2 (classic) really made me love the Clone Wars more than the original trilogy’s time period (whatever you call it. For some reason I never figured that out)

I've never seen him in anything else, so I don't know if his acting is always that stilted and wooden, but he didn't make a good name for himself. Actually people tend to forget that Padme was talking about the beach and lying on the sand prior to that line, so it's not exactly out of nowhere. Anakin was an awkward kid who was in love and sappy and totally into Padme that after 10 years of abstinence, couldn't possibly know how to smooth talk his crush of 10 years. Of course, that's just a good way to look at it, It STILL wasn't good dialogue but it didn't come out of nowhere, Anakin was trying to relate :D

To be fair, much of the problem with his performance in the prequels could be attributed to poor writing and direction. After all, Natalie Portman was terrible in those movies too, and went on to win an Oscar when working with Aronofsky.

If the rumors are to be believed Hamil, Fisher, and Harrison all said Lucas does give direction well. And even McGregor had inane dialogue. "You won't get away this time Dooku" 😞

@Volt• 42 years ago All because lucas is an amazing story/book writer but not so much a scripting genius. He can flesh out a story beautifully but he can't fill the small gaps with little details effectively. He could have just had hayden say "I hate sand. It reminds me of the slavers" or something along the lines of the bad of tattooine. It's also the reason why a large amount of people like or accept the prequels, because he built, albeit a compressed/sped up, plot line that explained fairly well how the empire came into power in the first place while still linking in lore that's referred to in the books. If the prequels were 4 movies instead of 3 I believe people would love them much more however Lucas also wanted to keep the "Trilogy Aesthetic" which just made the jumps in the timeline just feel weird and a little to rushed.

Let be honest here, his performance as the newly-made Darth Vader was unquestionably unsettling, with the emotionless face and the yellow sinister eyes. That was some solid, if not outright excellent, acting. He made us hate him, fear him, at the same time feel sorry for him. I cannot think of any other actor who can replicate that feel, aside from Heath Ledger and Dane DeHaan

I actually love the prequels (well 2 and 3), and I love Hayden as Anakin.

Anakin was confused and filled with anger. Everytime I run into those kinds of people they arnt graceful. Christenson and Hamil had the same thing happen to them. For the half wits out there...its called TYPE CAST

Thank God for sequels. Because of them, Hayden is finally getting much deserved love. His portrayal of Anakin in RotS was brilliant, considering what character he had to play, tortured soul just not sure what to do next while having no one to turn to for help/advice.

agree. I grew up with the prequel trilogy and they got me interested in the original trilogy. I think people who grew up with the original trilogy hate the prequels the most because they are so totally different. but the sword fights in episode I agains darth maul and the final fight between anakin and obi wan are fuckin epic. the original trilogy sucks in this respective. I loved seeing anakin evole into dart vader and how he was betrayed by the emperor. and how much obi wan cared for anakin and what he must had going through after anakins betrayal- pure epicness
