Why history? The hidden histories of black Victorians

Sharing insights from the past that help us to make sense of the present.
Society in the UK today is hugely diverse, but what do we know about Britain's multicultural past before the arrival of the Windrush generation? In this event Caroline Bressey explores the hidden histories of the ordinary black men and women living in Victorian Britain whose untold stories have only been pieced together by historians in recent years. She will also discuss the work of early anti-racism campaigners who sought to challenge rising prejudice in this period, drawing parallels with the Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the UK today.
Speaker: Dr Caroline Bressey, former British Academy Mid-Career Fellow; Reader in Cultural and Historical Geography, University College London
Chair: Farhana Haider, Journalist and Broadcaster, Presenter for the BBC World Service’s Witness History

If you haven't already read the book "When Jim Crow met John Bull, Black American Soldiersin WWII Britian" by Graham Smith. It has a lot ofi nformation and history. I enjoyed this interview and learned a few things. Thanks. From a history buff in the USA, This quote from Catherine Impey still applies to date, June 2022. "We see America, or at least its governing classes (for, though the great nation is a republic, it is always the few who govern, whether by exceptional ability of person or circumstance, or by choice, or election, of their fellows), striking with deadly blows at the best elements of its coloured population. Why? From fear".

The Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland Vol 17 (1840) and the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 2nd Series Vol. II (1879) both talk about how the indigenous in Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England were dark/blk/swarthy/tawny in complexion sent to West Indies and Americas 1700-1900s. Can you speak to this?

Hi I live in Glastonbury, just near to Street and I am aware of qute a significant group of radical Quakers there. I have never heard of Catherine Impie and am so pleased to have heard of her through your talk. I wonder if she knew of a family of Antiguan plantation owners resident in Wells where they were also significant land owners and whether she had any contact with them. I am currently researching them. I will follow her up.Thank you. Lovely talk

Quite a few Afroamericans fled to Britain as fugitive slaves in the early and mid-19th century/ Some settled in britain as teachers, preachers, lecturers for many years. And in some cases their. Children remained in britain after their parents returned to the US after emancipation. I am wondering whether any research has been done on his group

The US was completely inhabited be the Aborigines ( African Based Origine) Black skinned woollen haired rulers.. thousands of years BC.. ABORIGINES occupied the whole surface of the earth. Many of the Aboriginal blood lines still hold many original manuscripts never revealed or discovered by non-Africans. Tudor England was built and Ruled by Africans till the late 16th century. Proof has been successfully hidden in plain sight because programming of the masses was easier and quicker than to sift through all those records, modify and hide away. Those of Aboriginal nobble descent are very present Till today and much more qualified to give accounts on world history and how power was systematically handed from blacks to non-blacks who cannot be separated from genetic recessivity through albinism and inbreeding.

There's been blacks since the middle ages all through England in the nobility as well as the regular everyman. Well before the wind rush I hate the fact they always make it seem like blacks only came during that time period. Let's not forget the riots in Liverpool and Manchester after ww1 where black soldiers was murdered.

Mary seacole ( spelling?) Was inspired by Florence Nightingale's work in the Crimea . She travelled to the Crimea to see what she could do to help the injured soldiers. She found a place to make food for the soldiers and used her own money to buy clean bandages and other medical things. She deserved a statue .

Here's my book , lol .. theres loads of info about it all tbh. Known as *Impressment* , press gangs , working for navy would take men by force to work on their ships. It happened around the world, but moreso in Britain because it had the biggest navy. It also happened in the army but not as much. Started around mid 1600s until the early 19th century. .

Hi Old School your comments are not very helpful on the forum here. I would recommend that you do some research for example read Venerable Bede's which perhaps you can relate to ! Perhaps do some more reading and research. Read the Jacobite Gleanings State Manuscripts from 1745, Memoirs of the Secret Services of John Macky. Once read you may be able to put forth sensible arguments.

That there were black victorians that wasn’t just living in poverty. There were black people with working class jobs in England in the 1800s. And historians don’t cover this. Most people think black people came over here with the windrush from the Caribbean which isn’t true. Black people were already here in the 1800s living and working.
