    I'd compare Hiei to a feral cat that has found a family- he's always going to be a little wild, and he'll never meet you in the middle, but if you can accept him as he is and give him space, he'll always come home (when he's ready). It's basically what Kurama said to Hiei when Hiei tried to pawn the Tear Gem off on him "You'll give this to her (Yukina), at your own pace." Hiei's response? " You're the same as the day met, a pain who speaks the truth."

    Just wanted to share, in the Philippines back in the late 90's/early 2000's, YYH was extremely popular and ruled the primetime slots. It's also probably the only anime that gained mainstream success here, even non anime fans watched YYH. When they were airing the Yusuke vs Toguro eps, I kid you not there were barely any people outside. Everyone was glued to their screens. Hell, we even delayed a basketball match because of it

    @@JugglerBean DBZ was also popular, sure, but I reckon it didn't get nearly as popular as how YYH was back then. It swept the country like a storm so much so that when you walk the busy streets of the city, you can hear random people of all ages on the sidewalk talking about last night's episode. It was a huge phenomenon that got replayed at least five times and still managed to rake in viewerships time and time again. Non-anime watchers even knew about it. Additionally, DBZ's popularity in the Philippines only soared during the late 90's following YYH's success (DBZ being a battle shounen and was the most similar to YYH in regards to appeal) because people's treatment and reception of anime somehow became much better after YYH to the point that the entire weekly primetime slot of a huge TV station only aired anime shows in a bid to replicate YYH's success.

    This is perfect! well said. In the beginning of Shuuichi's life, Kurama was fully prepared to leave human world after roughly ten years, which gave him enough time to recover most if not all his demon powers, however, it was only when Shiori risked her life when Shuuichi was about to be seriously hurt that Kurama learns about love of humans, compassion and kindness. Shiori taught him that and unknowingly started Kurama down the path towards leaving Youko behind him. Shiori is one of the best mom's of anime I don't know if you've seen them, but watch the eizou hakusho openings for Hiei and Kurama, both are stunningly beautiful

    Ach, I loved this! This genuinely made me very happy to watch. YYH has such a uniquely well-written story and these two characters are largely responsible for my initial interest. I adored how the writer didn't spell everything out for their stories. It was so much more interesting to watch them for subtle changes and, since most of the changes in character really were quite subtle, it made the outbursts of emotion exponentially more meaningful (and heartbreaking at times). Your review did justice to two of my favorite characters in fiction and I'd like to thank you for that!

    There's a moment in the anime I watched with someone else, it was my 5th time watching the series, where Yusuke told Keiko to move, to hide behind a wall and she did it immediately and my friend pointed out how rare that is, that the main love interest usually gets in the way or freaks out about getting bossed around and complicates the bad guy interaction. I've always loved Keiko because she loves Yusuke and she's undeniably SMART. I wish there was a way to cosplay her lmao

    @@creshiell I loved that moment too! I also loved the scene when Keiko said that she might introduce her boyfriend as soon as Yusuke comes back from the demon realm. Usually the love interests say smth along the lines of "i will wait for you until you come back" but no, Keiko was like, "you think i'll wait for you? btch please i have my own life to live, will probably get a boyfriend or two". 😂 I know that Yusuke convinced her to wait for him and she actually did but still, that scene really made her an easy favorite among shonen characters' love interests.

    I think at first there was respect, but there was definitely some fear there. Remember Kurama was a 300+ year (potentially as old as 3,000) old youkai where as Hiei is about 100 years old. He grew up hearing stories of Kurama, which allows him reverence, but also fear of his strength and cunning. We see how deadly he is, even having Yusuke stating, don't piss of Kurama, because while he does have strength he has strategy. He isn't one to act on impulse or anger, even in a dire situation. He is also one that is willing to die depending on the situation. As Hiei grew to control the dragons power, he was now on par with Youkou in terms of strength and spirit energy, I believe the fear left and the respect remained.

He is the leader that people love and respect, who wants to set the best example (hence his code) and inspire people to follow him Hiei's power is in fear. He seeks to strike fear into his opponents, but it is also his driving force We also know that Hiei when training for the Dark Tournament took it easy on Kuwabara. Kurama is all about being strategic in his wins. He doesn't mind damage in order to get to know what he's up against. I push back on the compassionless part. Some battles you can see Kurama does have compassion, but when an opponent refuses it, THEN he will stop at nothing. That's happened twice in the Dark Tournament w Painter and Fish Rod I enjoyed his arc and Hiei's. They both found the same thing in a place theyeasr expected it. In human world

    Hiei is a very under the radar charactter as that is where most of his character growth happens. Kuwabara and Hiei are great foils because of their manner but so alike because of their code and confidence. Hiei also never gives up and you know he cares for Kuwabara when he trains him for the tournament but goes easy on him Kurama and Hiei are a great pair that complement the team and truly grow in different ways. If Yusuke ever needs them I know they'll be there for him any way they can The Dark Tournament DEFINITELY shoed a lot of growth and cemented the trust of the team

    Great analysis, these characters are very interesting. To me though, Kurama's internal battle about his identity didn't resolve exactly like that. In his battle with Shigure (I've only seen the anime version though, and in another dubbed language), right in this scene at 11:10 when he grabs the sakura, Shigure asked him something like: "So that's what you choose, huh?" and he responded something along the lines of "You're wrong, I'm not choosing/letting go of anything" as if to say, he isn't denying his past as a demon nor his current life as a human: he accepts his past and his demon side (though some cruel behaviour like killing Amanuma he can't accept anymore), but now he's content living his life as a human and that's the life he wants to live now, surrounded by his family and friends. I've seen so many fanfics placed right after the manga ended in which there's this "Shiori (Shuuichi's mother) dies" scenario so Kurama goes back to Makai, that it actually makes me wonder: would this version of himself actually go back to Makai since his mother is already dead and she would be the reason he stayed, or even without her, would he prefer living in peace in Ningenkai, since he would have grown fond of it? can't help but wonder :)

    I understand why it was cut short. But I wish the last arc was longer, just to see more growth and final story grasp of Kurama. It was like it was meant to put to rest all the personas he’s been handling or trying to handle. He was under Yomi’s thumb during it. I was looking to him putting Yomi down.

    kurama fights without emotion or morals.During his fight with karasu, the two fighters parallel eachother: karasu has the mentality of a serial killer, kurama has the same mindset when it comes to battle, both completely devoid of morals, respect or honor when it comes to a fight. theyre both psyhopaths.

  • @jeangentry6656

    @jeangentry6656

    True, but the way Kurama killed Karasu was very "human"- Kurama is battered, bloody, unable to switch to Yoko, so he pulls a Yusuke, he gives all he has left, intending to die, in the hopes that It's enough to kill Karasu and end the fight in a draw. We don't really see the darker or more ruthless part of Kurama's personality until the Sensui Saga.

    I think that knowing who Karasu was fighting for and having seen him in battle the previous round, Kurama always knew Karasu intended to kill him So I don't see it as a fault that Kurama battled Karasu without holding back

  • @Cerucir

    @Cerucir

    Do you mean Yoko Kurama? Because regular Kurama did have a bit of emotion when fighting. For example, during dark tournament while fighting Ura Urashima, Kurama doesn't agree to kill him, and plans just to knock him out. Kurama felt bad for him. Only to be taken advantage of by Ura.

    Uum Idk about the morals, arguable, but human Kurama at the very least definitely is capable of having emotion when in battle and it had also been established that one major point all four main characthers have in common is a code of honor. Even if he did strip himself of these in a fight, it would be the exception and not the rule for him.

    Very late comment, but I LOVED this analysis. I really think you hit the nail on the head in regards to the way Kurama's character is perceived. He is not the strongest fighter, but he does not need to be--because he's the sharpest. Hiei is one of the only people who truly understands that, right off the bat. He knows he can probably out-fight Kurama, but he cannot outsmart him. Kurama's mind has always been his greatest weapon, and the empathy for others he gained from his mother is the only thing keeping him from being a highly dangerous psychopath. Plus, as a fox demon, Kurama will always go straight for the jugular and fight to the death; combine that with his quick thinking and sharp intellect, and you've got maybe not the *strongest* fighter, but possibly the most frightening.
