Hercules has a great arc. He has to learn what being a hero is really about. He thinks it’s about receiving praise for good deeds, but learns that it’s about valuing others over yourself. He also learns the lesson without having it spelled out to him. He takes action to save Meg from dying in the Underworld, regardless of whether or not he might die. He’s an active protagonist that we can root for.

One aspect I always appreciated about Hercules in this film is how he starts off as being shunned for his gift of strength and how being clumsy makes people fear him and mark him as an outcast. Growing up, although I did not have the strength of gods, I was still unusually strong for my age, so I would at times get into situations where I ended up hurting people because of it. I wasn't doing it on purpose, but my strength combined with my clumsiness made me not very popular among other children and even older kids picked fights with me just because of my reputation of being strong. It was honestly a very lonely experience. Of all the Disney movies from the 90s, I related the most with Hercules because of his struggles of dealing with this very thing. It was nice seeing him take those aspects of himself that gave him such grief growing up by becoming someone that could use those gifts for good. Not my favourite Disney movie, but it holds a special place in my heart because of this.

Idk about the part with Simba or Quasimodo. His problem with trauma is that he doesn’t want to address it or deal with it, same for his responsibilities. Speaking of which, him being lazy because it’s been fostered by others is still a character flaw. Him being arrogant as a child because he’s spoiled is still a flaw that he grows out of making him more watchable. These are all gone when he decides to go back home, it’s an arc. He’s not unstoppable, he’s weak as a child and struggles against the less physically dominant and older scar. For Quasimodo, him being way too forgiving is a character flaw because he’s basically brainwashed by Frollo, in fact I’d argue he refused to harm Frollo because he’s one of the very few people he loved. But Hunkules is better no question

  • @speedracer2008

I would argue that Belle has an arc that isn’t always noted. She learns that the Beast is more than a monster and that there’s a chance for him to redeem himself.

"This character [Judy Hopps] gives you the message that it's okay for the police to be in bed with criminals, and to break the law..." Wrong. The rodent mob boss and Judy aren't building a rapport with one another. The mob boss doesn't even have anything to do with the antagonist of the film. The only reason he helps Judy is because she did a good deed for his daughter. The message of selective policing and reckless abuse of power is an underlying one that we can rewatch and reinterpret as adults, but the message that is intentionally portrayed in this scene is this: good deeds pay off in the long run.

Although...it would have been interesting if the "help" the mob offered to Juddy Hopps was accepted only that one time. They are then arrested and questioned for their crimes. Because after giving a clue to our protagonist couple, the rodent mafia disappears from the footage. They return at the end of the movie to help again... only to disappear again. We didn't see the end of it. We do not have anything. NOTHING.

I have no idea why this movie was recieved as poorly as it was. Perhaps it was the timing, suffering the same as Atlantis and Treasure Planet when being viewed through the lens of the musical hits from the years previous, it was too different from what people were expecting from Disney though I enjoyed it when it came out on VHS ("What. Are. Those?!?!"). The songs were catchy, the story decent, the jokes quotable, the characters were relatable enough to be engaging and most of the voice cast was spot on. James Woods is perfect for this take on Hades ("Lord of the dead. Hi how're you doing?") and this is a hill I will die on.

I don't agree with Quasimodo being flawless, he was very tempted to harm Phoebus but he didn't because he saw how much Esmeralda was happy. I letted Sly Cinderella, Belle and Simba because: -with Cinderella I actually think that she has less personality than Snow White. -Belle is like Paddington and Sonic the Hedgehog a static character that doesn't change much throu out the runtime but that is compelling nonetheless because of how she changes those around her. -Simba is the one I am most iffy about calling flawless but I let it sly because most of his most notable flaws were in his childhood so only the first half of the movie and I can also see your point of view. That being said I do think that one major flaw of Simba is it's stubborness and that doesn't get resolved until the Rafiki scene. With all that said, in regards to your video I think that the best Disney protagonist is Kuzco from the Emperor New Groove, but I agree on Hercules being the best Disney hero.

I am just gonna say this, being without a massive or visual character flaw is not by default bad. It is bad when such a character doesn't work in the story. Also Belle is petty, views her provincial life as something to leave (which points to being massively disatified over having the things that matter and only that, and a lack of gratitude for what she has), she's also passive-aggressive especially when treating Beast's (I think his actual name is Adam) wounds after the fight with the wolves, and she is overly curious (going into the West wing when told not too) it might not be as narratively shaking like say making a deal with the devil to save your crush who you only dated once, but it is a flaw

I love this video, and honestly hercules is one of my favourite characters, but i have to say I disagreed with you when you used Cinderella as an example of her being a boring character. She has been abused since she was a child, so there wasn't much that could be done for her to have flaws. She had to survive day in and out , And her kindness was her escape route. You can't really make room for flaws or even strengths when you're literally being abused ... Also in Simbas case ,i get that he has no flaws , but again for him to grow out of that trauma and take his place as king is character development. Even if we take Belle who is considered so perfect, she literally loses her dad in the same night and is imprisoned with this beast. However she is able to slowly see past that and see him for who he truly is. My point is its not necessary for protagonists to have flaws to get over to be well rounded characters or to be relatable. They are still very much real and it is a joy to see them overcome these situations.. Overall great video❤

I do think you miss that Hercules beats Polythemus is that while he stays in the fight via determination, he wins by thought. He is no longer trying to brute force the problem but instead ties up his adversaries' legs to use their size against them. He doesn't suddenly become brilliant (its a pretty basic trick) but he is learning.

Well, it is an American made movie at the end of the day. Plus, 4shame has a point about Judy doing some really ethically questionable stuff in this film. She establishes familial relations with the mafia, misuses her position as a cop to blackmail (has just joined the police department no less), and does illegal searches of private property with a felon that has a criminal record, just to name a few. By all accounts she is a terribly corrupt cop under any normal jurisdiction. Only reason people overlook this is because of it being just a film and people using their suspension of disbelief to excuse it.

As a Greek, i hate this movie. Herakles is a great example of hero. But Disney didn't show that at all. It's disrespectful to Greece and actual Greek mythology.

Except not because hades as a God! Was fooled by his serves about Hercules being a mortal to be easy to kill, if Hercules didn’t die so hades would noTice a soul going to the underworld or not. That’s a plothole.

You could argue that there are so many souls in the Underworld that he would not notice Hercules soul specifically.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who dislikes the implications in Zootopia. It always rubbed me the wrong way when Judy let Nick and the other guys go because they helped her with the case, yeah they technically redeem themselves but they still committed crimes that they need to pay for. Honestly I feel like since its release the public opinion of the movie has soured because I see more and more internet reviewers noting its problems and not praising it like it's a masterpiece like they were back in 2016.

Disagree. Hercules was an awful protagonist
