Why Henry VIII Broke Away From the Church | MrBettsClass Animated History

What could be so important that Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church and started the English Reformation? Perhaps we should ask not what but who. And how did this lead to the Pilgrims coming to America? Let's find out!

Nice to see more world history, though I love your US history too. I wondered if now you are teaching younger grades if you are teaching more world history. Not sure if curriculum standards here. In my home state we do state history (California) in 4th, Early US in 5th, World to 1600 in 6th, World 1600 to now in 7th, Middle US in 8th, and Modern US in 11th. 12th is Civics and Government.

All because of his ego and refusal to submit to Rome, he made life a living hell for English Catholics who refused to break away. There are tons of English Catholic martyrs after Henry’s breakaway, it was only during The Emancipation Act of 1829 where it became legal to be Catholic in England. Catholics before this had their human rights taken away. Catholics aren’t always the villains of this story. Why are you portraying it that way?

The Pope at that time Clement VII was a prisoner of Charles after the Sack of Rome 1527 (the one with the Swiss Guard that inspired Sabaton's Last Stand). Henry VIII was in good favor with the papacy after the writing Assertio Septem Sacramentorum ("Defence of the Seven Sacraments") and going to war with France in Defense of Pope Julius II. Historically Popes had been willing to grant annulments to rulers who supported the Church. Robert Guiscard got to have his first marriage annulled because he was fighting the Muslims and Orthodox Byzantines If the Sack of Rome never happened perhaps the Pope would have granted the annulment. England may have remained catholic. If England remains catholic what would that mean for the reformation and the religious status of other nations like Ireland, Scotland and France? However, it is still possible England would go protestant due to Anne Boleyn and other factors

Actual history 1. King Henry VIII knew his father barely secured the kingdom due to heir disputes with the Yorkist dynasty and it cost a lot of lives. Moreover, like all civil strife, it made the kingdom vulnerable to outside threats (France, for one). He knew he needed a clear heir or there would be turmoil and war (spoiler, he was correct) 2. Henry was pressured into marrying his brother's widow. He never loved or cared for her and she was significantly older than he was at the time. 3. Henry initially secured an annulment from Thomas More, but the Pope, who had political ties to the kingdom of Spain, forbade it 4. Henry never received a good education in management of the kingdom due to his father's favoritism towards his elder brother, Arthur. Even after Arthur's death, Henry VII was reluctant to entrust his remaining son with any real responsibilities 5. Henry suffered a debilitating injury in a joust that led to lifelong medical problems. His doctors treated him with mercury, which is now known to cause psychological and temperament issues 6. The court was rife with Catholic spies and interlopers so Henry's paranoia (if a bit mercury-fueled) was not entirely without merit Henry VIII is a tragic figure who requires a lot of context to truly understand. He was a remarkably complex and bright man with many personal struggles between familial burdens and mental health issues. In the end, the thing he was desperately trying to prevent happened anyways between the reigns of his two daughters and the consequences they had.
