Why Hell Exists (feat. Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P.)

Ойын-сауық

When it comes to Hell, we vaguely know 3 things: it’s a horrible place, there’s no escaping it, and no one wants to go there. But when it comes to answering why God created Hell in the first place, we seem to stumped. Today, Fr. Mark-Mary and Fr. Gregory Pine explain what Hell is and how it fits into God’s plan.

    Inspiring Philosophy has a Good video on Hell but in short, the Church teaches that hell is the place for those who refuse God's offer of salvation from sin the punishments of hell do not come from God as some sort of vengeance but it comes from the nature of sin, just like a drug addict suffers withdrawal symptoms when the drug is taken away, the punishments in hell are far far worse, the people in Hell attached meaning to something that has no meaning, and their soul will never be satisfied because they rejected God the only source of eternal fulfillment and happiness

    One thing Fr Pine mentioned about God not imposing himself or coercing with violence. I’m reading through the old testament right now with Fr Mike Schmitz and seems there were some pretty violent things to draw his people back to himself. I’m thinking chastisements. God allows these things to happen for a reason. Sometimes to draw us back to himself, other times as reparation offered for those willing to carry the cross of suffering. Some people I’ve talked to don’t share this same perspective.

  • @phoult37

    @phoult37

    3 жыл бұрын

    It has to do with the usage of the term "violence;" when God uses physical force in the OT (what we call violence), that is a punishment for wrongdoing (i.e. Justice). When Fr. Pine says God does not use violence, I think he means that God does not force people to conversion through violation of their free will. Yes God punishes, but that is an act of justice, not violence.

    When explaining hell to my 5th/6th graders I illustrate it that evil people are like cockroaches; what happens when you flip on the light? They scurry away and hide in the dark. When faced with the radiant, peaceful light of Christ at their deaths evil people actually are repulsed. It’s not God’s fault they chose hell. Which leads to a whole series of teachings on how to be God’s child of light, sharing His love, joy and peace with all people we meet, the good, the bad and the ugly. And I pray daily for all my students, past, present and future that they get it. Beautiful presentation, thank you!

It’s hard to phantom the choice explanation when compared to God, we are very naive, foolish, and stubborn. Like a child. We don’t allow our children to make all their choices not because we don’t love them but because they don’t know better & sometimes adults have to intervene to forcibly stop any possibility of danger, especially in a matter of life or death. Do you see my point?

    - Nerdy reflection - Imagine God's grace and presence like the field, or "force", of gravity, in this case God always draws all creation to his perfect goodness and perfect existence of holiness, the closer we are to God, the stronger this "force" is. Gravity never pushes things away, it can only attract matters into its center; the same with God who always draws every creation to its ultimate state of good as purposed by God. However, gravity can be fought against with force and there will come a point where the force or speed is so great that an object will escape the gravitational influence of its parent host; and if the object no longer has fuel, it will drift away forever from the center of the parent host; like the Voyager spacecraft from the sun for example. I believe the same with a deceased person who persisted in mortal sins until death, his body and soul are separated in death, the person no longer has any means of control or "fuel" to change his course or state, like the fuel-empty spacecraft already speeding out of the solar system for good; the soul cannot orient himself anymore to God because of the choice he has made during his lifetime. Imagine being so lost in the darkness of empty space, until your parent star is nothing but a dot of light, and with your fuel empty and communications lost, you can never go back to the star system you were once originated in.

    Eternal burning torment would only be NECESSARY if two reasons were BOTH true: 1. The souls of all humans are immortal (i.e. all souls become conscious after conception and continue to exist into eternity future), and 2. The corrupting seed of sin that we receive from our parents grows progressively, irreversibly, absolutely, and completely given enough time. Even a speck of sin is the seed of a future satanic being within. Just as our souls are locked into our current mortal bodies, the lost will be raised and given immortal bodies to lock their souls into. Then they will be thrown into the lake of fire. No matter how kind and gentle a nonbeliever may seem to you at the moment, God sees the sin inside them growing. Ephesians 4:22 (NASB) says, “That, in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self, which IS BEING corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit.” 2 Timothy 3:13 (NASB) says, “But evil people and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” Galatians 5:9 (NASB) says, “A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.” Colossians 1:21 (NLT) says, “This includes you (Gentiles before they became Christians) who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions.” Ephesians 2:12 (NASB) says, “Remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the people of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.” For this reason, God knows that their immortal soul is on track to being another satanic-like being in the future. And since their soul exists forever, if they do not obtain salvation through Jesus, God must eternally separate them from Himself and those who will be in heaven. But He loves His enemies and has made a way out of our hopeless situation through the person of Jesus Christ if we accept Him before we die. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 (NLT), “And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus.” Look at the current behavior of Satan and his demons driven by hate and rage. They are the end products of complete corruption. John 10:10a (NASB) says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” How can anyone contain satanic evil in a group of lost immortal humans and angels? Do you remember what God said in Genesis about the abilities of humans? God reveals something about humans in Genesis 11:6 (NLT), “‘Look!’ he said. ‘The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!’” Eternal pain will eternally contain the lost souls’ thoughts and attention. They will forever be in such torment that they can never unify to break forth and spread corruption again. Bottom line - the sin (selfishness) in lost people is growing progressively, irreversibly, absolutely, and completely given enough time. Death does not stop the progression. Every lost person will end up completely corrupted like Satan and his demons driven by hate and rage so that all they want to do is “steal, kill and destroy.” Eternal separation and containment in torment are necessary.

    I have a question for Father Gregory and Father Mark-Mary. 🙏 If God uses actual graces to push people towards the right direction, then may I ask what's the criteria for something to be called an "actual grace?" Because for some reason, most people aren't aware that God is giving them graces everyday so that they will recognize Him. Are these actual graces given during happy times or are they given during times of suffering? 🙏 May God bless you both ❤❤❤

I found this quote from Charles Spurgeon almost immediately after hearing your breakdown. & it gave me an even clearer picture of hell vs. SALVATION ✨ .....You are too delicate to tell the man that he is ill. You hope to heal the sick without their knowing it. You therefore flatter them. And what happens? They laugh at you. They dance upon their own graves and at last they die. Your delicacy is cruelty, your flatteries are poisons you are a murderer. Shall we keep men in a fool's paradise? Shall we lull them into soft slumber from which they will awake in hell? Are we to become helpers of their damnation by our smooth speeches? In the name of God we will not. -Charles Spurgeon

Because in the Bible it says after judgement Hell is thrown into the eternal fire. And just about all I've heard of Hell it shows the devil and his demons and followers ruling and hurting humans thrown in Hell. So I've come to understand there is a difference between the two. ... ??? ...

    @Charlie Hebdo That is what does not logically follow. Why would we buy into this myth of God purposefully sabotage God's self? This all comes down to a poor understanding of the good and free will, which Origen settled for the Eastern Fathers long ago. Is God not free, even though God only chooses the good? No, God is ultimately free. The idea that choosing the good makes us less free is moral confusion.

    Where does Father Gregory get the idea that the beatific vision overwhelms free will and rejection is not possible amid a less veiled presence of God? Was that a theory of Aquinas? Angels were in Heaven with the Lord when many rejected Him. Though free will is posited as a uniquely human gift, do we not believe that Satan and his ilk chose against God? Did Aquinas believe the difference of nature between angels and men means we are affected differently by the beatific vision? Was that enough questions for you? ;) Hell is important for all Christians to know and remember. That our Holy Mother saw fit to reveal Hell to children during her visitation verifies the traditional exposure of even children to that warning. Jesus talks about Hell a lot, so it is important. There is a tendency these days to dismiss the virtue of "fear of the Lord" as awe and wonder, but such an understanding is incomplete at best. A spotless saint like Mother Mary has no cause to fear the Lord, but all sinners do. Fear is the safety net that catches us when our devotion and trust fail. Every loving parent instills both fear and respect in children because fallen human nature is such that respect and honor will sometimes fail. Fear of the Lord's due wrath can deter us from sin for the worst reasons until our hearts are ready again for the right reasons. Thanks for these videos and reflections. Please pray for me as I pray for y'all.

    Dear Fr. Gregory Pine, you say at the 08:11 mark that God is a gentleman that isn't going to force anyone unto Himself and that He doesn't coerce to violence. Yet that is exactly what you claim He does if you are going to harmonize that statement with 1) the well known passages that teach us that every knee will bend to Him. And 2) that keeping people alive for all eternity for the sole purpose of torturing them. So, I invite you to reflect on your own words about God not forcing anyone into heaven yet God has no problem forcing somebody to bend their knee to him and confessing Him as Lord. And God being a gentleman yet he has no problem torturing people in fire forever. I have a trustworthy saying on this matter: God's salvation plan does not stop at a human's (or any other created beings) death and that Jesus has the keys to death and hell for a good reason: namely that He is going to redeem everyone back to himself.
