Why hasn't the Bill James "Game Score" stat caught on?

Спорт

NFL fans are familiar with "QBR" and "Passer Rating" for quarterbacks. Why hasn't the MLB community adopted the "Game Score" for pitchers?

Great video. I’ve always been interested in game score. It’s fun to see where pitchers fall after an elite performance. I find it odd that Bill James didn’t include hit by pitches in his formula, though

Pitcher 1 goes a full game, gives up three earned runs behind sparkling defense, strikes out 10, walks four and gives up six hits, three doubles and two home runs. One of the strikeouts results in an a wild pitch on a third strike that allows the batter to reach first. He allows three stolen bases and balks. He allows 19 total bases achieved throughout the game to include the stolen bases and balk. Pitcher 2 goes six strong innings behind terrible defense that gives up two runs on a dropped lazy fly ball. Two more unearned runs on an overthrow into the dugout. He gives up four unearned runs, none earned, doesn't allow a stolen base or extra base hit, gives up 2 singles. He pitches to contact, only strikes out two, gives up no walks. One was a bloop single just out of the reach of a below replacement player shortstop giving the better than average defensively shortstop a day off. The other was a play that was called an infield hit because the third baseman is terrible and didn't react quick enough to a fairly routine ground ball. He allows two total bases achieved in six innings. Pitcher 1 is a 69 Pitcher 2 is a 60 Pitcher 1 with Pitcher 2's defense would have given up 6 or more runs. Pitcher 2 with Pitcher 1's defense would have thrown a no hitter. Yes, that's baseball. But the stat means nothing, and doesn't account for the true performance of the pitcher. THAT is why it's, as Bill James said, a garbage stat.

I think this concept is pretty interesting. I think the simple answer is that - baseball is so random and has so many factors, that you could have 100 pitchers wind up with a game score of 70, and all of them would look very different. With that said, I think you laid out your case very well and the video quality is top-tier as always. Great video! - Jacob

You’ve got a great channel here and I appreciate the love for game score. Not perfect by any means but it is a nice quick stat that gives a pretty good idea of what happened

I love Game Score, it's a great shorthand that does the job when quickly analyzing a pitcher's gamelog

Honestly, I've always loved this stat. It gives you one simple number to gauge the most epic performances in history. It may be a bit flawed, but I think if you look at it game-to-game and not, for example, as an average, you can count them up and separate the truly dominant pitchers from the rest of the pack in any given season. And plus, like you said, it's fun to play around with

That game from Kerry Wood is SO gross. I was 8 years old when it happened and I just remember being sort of impressed because Pedro and Randy were doing crazy shit every single week, but looking back on it, it's the best game anybody's ever pitched.

Why doesn't game score add +2 for double plays or +1 for infield outs

You left out one thing. A lot of people in baseball hate Bill James. That is not going away. I would think that plays a part in this.

Tampa started using “openers” who might go 2/3 of an inning to may 2 full innings, MLB only would calculate that pitcher’s game score. Pretty useless stat in that case. Why deduct points for an unearned run? A decent pitcher with poor fielding behind him shouldn’t get penalized.

It's not a very good stat and we already have WAR to go off of. If it accounted for ballpark factors and balanced out strikeout and contact guys, I'm sure it would be a lot bigger.

WAR works waaayyy better with volume while Game Score is for a single outing. One doesn't invalidate the other in any real way, tbh
