That study on the soleus muscle could explain why jump rope does so well burning calories.
Started new job few months ago and didn't have much time to workout more than 45 minutes. I took Adam's advice and do it 20 mins and never felt much better than this!

This was a podcast I desperately needed to hear. This has been one of my biggest hurdles in fitness. For a long time I thought pushing myself as hard as I could everyday, was the only way to get results. Now, after listening to you guys I have learned that a little can go a long way if done correctly. Thanks for the content, and renewing my passion for fitness.

Exactly! I thought it had to be 95-100%, every set, every rep, every time. Too many times I left the gym absolutely floored to the point that it ruined the rest of my day. I’m down to 4 days a week now, 45min to 1hr MAXIMUM. Building up to an all out top set and good pump for the muscle group overall and man it’s night and day difference in the progress.
Great content as always. I've only recently broken my "train to failure" brainwashing. Now reaping the benefits. It's also my anecdotal opinion that most of the population that makes it consistently to a gym is completely overtrained.

People always seek the magical pill… and the magical pill IS consistency. I was ill and on bed rest for a month. So consistency looked like feeling into my nutrition and feeding my mind with info on form and function etc…videos etc. It’s literally how I found and fell in love with you guys offerings. Started working out 12 years ago. Lots of cardio and some free dumbbell routines, walking 25k to 30k steps daily, sometimes 50k to 60k. This year, in June, I discovered Mind Pump. I had surgery, and couldn't work out for 1 month. The result of listening to you: stopped cardio and started Anabolics, now phase 2. My family said I looked dry like a raisin 12 years ago, evolved to a grasshopper (skinny and muscular) until Anabolics. Now I've got curves and I'm sexy! 45 years old, 120lbs, stronger than ever! Thanks, guys!!!!
Love that these guys have such a grounded approach to diets and protocols. I’ve been through so many of the different protocols since I like to experiment with what happens to my body following them. What I’ve learned is that they all produce results, and like they continually mention is it’s because the diet gets cleaned up with Whole Foods and appropriate amounts of calories. My big picture advice nowadays is high quality Whole Foods from high quality sources with at least .82g high quality Whole food protein, good sleep, mobility strength train, and spirituality whatever that means to you. It’s a winning combo
Hey guys, amazing content, im a 32 yr old that have worked out on and off but never stayed committed, your podcast has help me get the correct motivation, thank you
This is the best fitness podcast out there. So applicable to people of all different fitness levels and education backgrounds.
Really appreciate Sal, Adam, and Justin's consistent commitment to provide advice and help that is looking at the big picture, not just quick fixes or even what the callers might want to hear. The guys answered the listeners' questions today about shoulder pain and injury in a way that shows they really want what's best for them in the long run, and their advice encourages me also to listen to wisdom in training and to think in terms of longevity, not just in the moment. Keep the great content coming!
Originally I was a follower based on a person's body then I became a follower of people that do things I like to do. Now that I am older than dirt it's more science-based and from people, I respect such as the Mindpump guys. When you finally get to the point that you realize that daily movement is a necessity and strength and muscle not only look good on you but it is important for health and longevity. It's a great mind space to be in.
Love the Doug intros he kills it every time! The episode was great as always amazing info
17:38 Actually, the soleus is the the ‘meatier’, thicker and more dense part of the lower leg, much more than the gastrocnemius. I’m a physical therapist and was surprised to learn this during dissecting a cadaver in my anatomy lab and how it makes up the majority of the lower leg, and the gastrocnemius is actually relatively small in comparison. With that said, this doesn’t surprise me a ton knowing how important the soleus muscle in for routine, endurance based tasks for humans, and how dense it is. I would expect it to need a lot of energy to use constantly! Super cool to learn about and this study! Thanks guys!
Consistency has been my go to word for awhile now. I appreciate Adam’s honesty in not always feeling motivated, that too will pass, and where discipline will overcome in the end. Learning that from Sals book. Great book! So very reasonably for this 69 year old! Keep sharing your experiences with us then we won’t feel alone in our endeavors for good health through proper nutrition and and lifting heavy things.

For the past two week I've missed my routine work outs at the gym due to helping my wife recover from her knee replacement surgery. Hearing what you guys are saying about getting just 3 set in of one exercise in morning or evening has been my new routine. It's a reminder to me that I'm not quitting the gym. I'll get back to it when things get back to normal. So thanks for this episode its what I needed to hear.

I had the same issue that Justin had with IF...worked for a while for about a year, then the skipping breakfast and late lunch made it harder to get work done. Now I still often use dinner as my largest meal, during the day I often eat smaller meals of mostly protein with some no starchy carbs and fats as well as non flavored protein shakes. On most days this works well. If I want starch I often have it at dinner which is usually my post workout meal. I will occasionally purposely IF if I am having a really packed schedule if I don't have a chance to meal prep and try to still hit my protein goals. Hydration matters a lot too.
I can’t believe this information is free. I love it here!❤
Hitting the nail on the head!!! I was coached this past summer and my coach appropriately challenged me every session never going crazy and I made major improvement. The whole concept was centered around proper form!!!!
I have been following your podcasts and what you say is what I like to hear. You sound realistic. I am looking to change and make a lifetime habit by being consistent with my workouts and also easy on myself.
Consistency over motivation and intensity! I love the show!

Telling my clients we don’t have to go 100% intensity is a pretty constant battle. They always have a hard time believing me until they see greater results every month with our body scan compared to constant training to failure.
When my daughter first started working out she had a trainer who actually had her throwing up in the gym. I wonder if that's why even to this day she's not consistently interested in exercising

I’m the same. I tried full body 3x a week with trigger sessions in between, for 4 weeks. It wasn’t for me mentally. I think that’s ok. Better to consistently do what you love. I’m back to bro split and mentally feel better.
I personally like doing sprints 2x per week for actual cardio. It is good to have some intensity on a weekly basis. Plus better work capacity helps w/lifting. 👍 **But a good rule of thumb for lifting is to always leave 2 reps shy of absolute failure in the tank and take actual rest periods of 2-3 min between sets. Also daily walking speeds up recovery and lowers stress. 💯

@@flipmanonline - No offense man but 2-4 min total isn't a "cardio workout" regardless of the interval protocol. The duration is too damn short. Tabata has proven to be a huge scam because no one can replicate the 170% of vo2 max like the speed skaters did in that study. You'll actually get a far better range of conditioning and work capacity commiting to a legit 20-30 min interval session. The most common being a 100 yard all out sprint, walk back, and repeat 10-12x.

@@flipmanonline - I'm biased speaking as a trainer. But actual cardio workouts should be done based on benefit and not enjoyment. I mean you may like it, but that doesn't mean it's actually benefitting you. To quote the MP crew, what we avoid doing, benefits us the most. 👍 ***Since you're doing an upper/lower split try this sometime. 2x per week on lower days, do 10 sprints as a finisher at the end. Sprint 15 sec, walk back, and repeat. You'll get a lot out of it long term!

It’s great listening to you guys talk about a wide range of topics that can positively contribute to my life. Best of all it’s from your own lived experience and you are happy to talk about how in the past you were less informed and gave out the wrong advice. It’s humble and noble to admit fault. I resonate with all you promote except meat eating. From my own personal experience and reading up about veganism, getting protein from plants is far more beneficial to us all, the planet and mostly the animals being treated as commodities. There’s plenty of people who have sculpted their bodies on a plant based diet. I wonder if you can invite someone on as a guest to hear their perspective. Derek from Simmett nutrition is a really popular guy within the vegan fitness community. Love the content, keep doing what you are doing ✌🏻

Nice... I'm gonna check out 68. I'm eyeballing that Symmetry as well since I'm finishing up with Anabolic.
The soleus muscle study, absolute amazing. I lecture in Human Anatomy and Physiology and have studied Human Antropology and evolution in depth and this just makes absolutely perfect sense. Homo sapiens aren’t the strongest, fastest, or have the sharpest/largest teeth, but damn it, our lil calf muscle has a super power capable of world domination- quite literally! 😅🎉❤
To Lift or not to Lift, That is the NOT a question. Whether ‘tis nobler to not Squat and Dead Lift, And live a weak and sick existence, Or to fully embrace the Mind Pump Life, And look Ripp’d Naked for your Wife. 💪
There are days when I am low energy or not feeling well and it can be really hard to move my body how I would normally. On those days I also play games with myself like Adam said and just do a little bit and then a little bit and sometimes it wakes my body up enough that I can work out more like how I would prefer to and if not then at least I put in some effort. I have been having a recurring shoulder problem from my workout sessions. Maybe Symmetry would help. I remember another podcast where the guys talked about it helping to correct weak muscle imbalances which could be what is what is going on with my shoulder. Going to give the calf raises a try. Cool study.
I’m right there with caller 3. I’ve had health issues most of my life (ie poor diet high in sugar, multiple rounds of antibiotics as a kid) but my body fell apart after having my son 8+ years ago. I have been working with a functional medicine specialist for 7 years and progress has been sooooo slow. I have treated autoimmune, gut, and adrenal issues through diet, supplements, lifestyle changes, exercise, etc. Last summer, I reached what I thought was my peak (ie goal weight, good sleep, etc) but after moving into a new house, everything fell apart again. I’m a physical therapist by trade and had to stop working. I’m hoping that this struggle will help me with my patients once I get back to good health. I won the RGB bundle a while back and am currently going through anabolic while trying to reverse diet because my caloric intake to reach my goal weight was incredibly low (~1300-1400). I can’t seem to get above 1800. I just don’t feel hungry. I’m 5’4.5” and 150 lbs for reference. I got down to 126 lb with walking 12k per day. Once I started adding resistance training, I started gaining weight AND inches. I’m gaining muscle and getting stronger but my measurements are increasing. I prioritize protein, don’t eat sugar, and eat whole food/home cooked meals. I’m currently starting Cellcore to get my detoxification working properly so that I can do the parasite cleanse. It’s just process of elimination until we find what is causing my symptoms.
I'm a beginner (although I took a weightlifting class once in college), on MAPS Anabolic, just did pre-phase and on Phase I now. I quit cardio workouts completely, and it felt so weird to do only 2 "serious" workout days per week (plus trigger sessions). I wasn't that tired after those 2 full body workouts. Several times, I wondered if I should do more because it didn't feel like I was dying. Seriously, after 3 WEEKS, other people can see that I was getting muscular & leaner. I can't wait to see how I feel after Phase III!
So fun Justin❤
"Yeah we attack him" 😂😂😂 best. Ever.
I've had days where I'm feeling under the weather and my PT has advised me to take rest but I've gone down to the gym and watched the regulars work out. Maybe a bit of movement without adding any weights. I'm someone that in the past found it challenging to sustain working out consistently. But just being in that environment even if I don't work out has kept me motivated, and I end up doing something light anyway where as staying home cooped in would have made me feel lazy and sluggish. Love the advice you guys give. I'm playing these videos whilst working out at the Gym. I also have a question, I'm at the gym almost daily and it's helped my mental immensely. So much so that the days I don't go I feel really depressed and negative. What can I do on my days off where I still feel like I've done a good workout but it's not Harming my progress. Thank you for the value you provide.

Go for a nice walk/cycle on days off the gym. Doesn’t impact recovery and you still get that endorphin release
I don't know if Justin will ever see this comment, but I think he'd love to see the band Alestorm. It's Pirate Party Metal. I went with my brother and my mom (my mom's a moshing badass) and it was beautiful chaos. Justin would love it.
Makes sense re the flash frozen fish. That’s what we do in sample collection in research studies at the university. Any tissue that is collected is immediately snap frozen in liquid nitrogen within seconds to stop the ice crystals essentially lacerating and destroying the tissue. And boy you can tell the different down a microscope when you haven’t done it properly. When measuring certain biomarkers it needs to me as close to in a live animal as possible.
I wish I had learnt this earlier, I was taught by my coach years ago to train to failure every single time and I couldn't understand why I plateaued so much. I even got some tendon injuries because of it

The best place to enjoy any, as in any show is to stand right next to the FOH console. Best sound, almost no mosh or circle pit. And you can really enjoy the band, the music. Fun to see the world collapsing right infront of your eyes. If FOMO takes effect, jump right in and come straight back with a broken bone somewhere 😂

Get her on doing air squats ( perhaps transitioning into light/moderate goblets in time) in excellent form. I just read an article ( a video was also a companion) that said “diabetes starts in the legs” in that the greatest majority of people with diabetes are obese and/or elderly who have poor muscle mass in the lower body. The lower body has the greatest potential for muscle , and generates great circulation. Since positive muscle mass ( even good basic tone in an average Joe) burns fat and gives favorable blood sugar levels, having good lower body musculature helps to overcome/prevent diabetes. Naturally, having good lower body strength is going to keep the elderly more mobile and less prone to falls. It’s a win win-also important is balance training by standing on each foot for up to 30 seconds per leg, multiple times per day. It’s an outstanding benefit for anyone over 50 to pursue-It strengthens the CNS connections between the brain and body, and gives seniors a further edge against trips and falls accidents👌🏽🤙🏼

I joined a personal trainer’s online program. So it was cardio and weight lifting! I stayed faithful to the program for 6 months. We worked out 5 days per week for 1 hour. There was a very slight difference in my measurements and a drop of 3 lbs. On top of that I injured my shoulder. It was way too much! I’m 56 years old and over weight! A highly stressful life. It was too much stress on my body I’m sure! I started walking and lost 10 lbs in 2 months. Something I couldn’t do in the program. Now I’m looking to get into weight lifting so that I can flip a Buick! 🤣🤣🤣

So does wearing high heels count for the soleus findings???lol
The number of times I’ve beat myself up in the gym is unreal. Only to see better results when I go slow and controlled with lighter weight. Less is definitely more.
This is the best comment!! And here's a question too: Do you guys recommend still working out during covid? Obviously, a lighter work out than normal?
in terms of the soleus muscle, think about people who are figity, TONS of people "bounce their knee" which is the exact motion Sal mentioned. there are other theories that some thin people have additional habits that raise their "resting" metabolism, thing like.....bouncing their knee.
When do you think about the makeup of muscle fiber type ratios in certain groups, the calves cannot be trained in traditional bodybuilding fashion. They are not designed for that and you really can't change that. I always tell people do heavy loaded carries, front-loaded side-loaded even top loaded, go walking multiple miles a day, which you can easily do by taking a 15-minute walk after every meal, and do sprinting once a week. Your calves will grow
MAPS symmetry is the way!
I have type 1 diabetes and hate taking insulin so I’m going to try these calf raises before and after eating to see if they have the same effect on my blood sugar👍🏾

I've got AC joint issues myself. I believe mine started way back in high school playing football. Last year i agitated it hitting a 315 bench pr and honestly i couldn't even bare the pain to bench 135lbs after this. I started taking collagen and doing certain stretching that seemed to make it feel better and also what i believe really helped was i bought a slingshot and slowly worked my bench back up with that. I've since hit the 315lb bench again at 168lb body weight which i think is decent but man I'm telling ya some days if i move a Lil wrong on bench it hurts so i tend to not do too many 1rmaxs anymore on bench. And dips are terrible I'll feel the pinch ASAP but i do do them maybe once a week hoping i can acclimate to it somehow

I hear ya. I quit lifting 7 years ago due to same reason. I was benching 225 for 38 reps, trying to get to 40. Pain become so great I couldn’t bench 135 comfortably. My surgeon said both AC joints severely degenerated, recommended joint resection and said that would give me some shoulder instability. I simply quit lifting… Now, seven years down the road, at 58, I’ve started again. Working on my form and slow, controlled lifts. Trying to keep my pride and ego in check and not push.

Hey guys, I’ve been doing ”the big 5” now 3 days a week (6x4 and now 12x4) with great success. I’ve been thinking of splitting it up to 6 days with mon-wed-fri (squat and deadlift) and tue-thu-sat (bench, military press and rows) So same volume but ”easier” workouts. Primary to save time and fit with lifestyle (2 small kids). My normal workout now takes about 60 min with warmup and stretching. So this would be 20-30min. Seems good to me. What do you guys think? Peace!!❤
Yall should do a "big o fat boy bundle" 🏋♂️ just saying lol 😆 But really loving going through performance right now!!!
can you answer the question on chronic wrist pain on the ulnar side of the wrist that does not go away
What are yalls thought on the Yuka app? I've been using it and been looking at what all I've been putting I to my body with it. I just don't know how accurate it is.
People's problem is not a lack of intensity in the gym, That's for sure. Any progress I've ever gotten in the gym has been from keeping my reps extremely close to failure.. Mostly 2 RIR or less..
My regular trainer had me winning weightlifting championships with appropriate intensity. Another trainer came in and whooped our ass beyond recovery and we regressed when we couldn't train properly next session
A bunch of GOATS
First caller had me falling asleep 🤣
1:19:40 I'm probably way out of my league questioning Sal, but I'm pretty sure autophagy in relation to fasting primarily occurs during all that time you aren't eating and just giving your body time to digest and recycle old/dying cells. I don't think it's simply about reduced calorie intake. Would appreciate if someone could open my eyes and reeducate me on this though!
You're talking about a theremin ! The instrument
This is the most I've heard Justin talk during the question section. I was almost convinced Sal and Adam told him "STFU during QUAH"

Justin is a little more reserved in his speech-no big deal.
