    I always wondered why my hair got tangled and greasy so fast. I figured it's just my age (I turned 30) and was like fuck, it's time for a big chop. I didn't even realize it's because we moved apartments a couple years ago and that it could be the water.

    I’m a BIG victim of hard water. I used to have a really shiny, healthy, long, pretty and thick hair that everyone’d ask for my haircare routine. Then we moved on another city and without realizing, water ruined my hair and skin... I lost too much hair and now I have fine, unhealthy, frizzy hair. And if we collect water in a bottle, after a few hours we can see the dirts accumulate at the bottom. I used shower filter too but can’t say it made a huge difference. My hair type also changed, now it’s wavy-curly and I started to use Curly Girl Method. But I see it’s not enough, I’ll try to rinse my hair with apple vinegar+filtered water from now on. Edit: I also find a recommended chelating shampoo in my country, I’m gonna buy it as soon as possible!

    I've been watching for awhile now and I'm kind of overwhelmed of where to start on my newest curly journey. I used to love my curls. I did co-washing for awhile while I was transitioning to washing my hair less and am now down to shampooing once a week. I cut out most heat styling, towels (I use an old cotton t-shirt now), sulfates, parabens, and silicones at that time (probably about 6 years ago). My issue is it doesn't seem to matter what I do, my hair ends up frizzy and the curls go wonky after it dries. I learned, from you 😍, I have low-porosity hair but I can't for the life of me find a moisturizer that actually works. They have lost most of their curl pattern and it causes me to wear my hair up more than down causing breakage. I tried a protein shampoo and that didn't help either. I just don't know where to start and I want my curls back. 😔

    I went to Las Vegas for vacation in March and our "Stay Well" hotel room had a weird filter on the shower head. But after one use, OMG my hair felt amazing! It felt super super light even when wet which is unusual for me, and my hair/curls dried perfectly without me needing to fix anything! Usually I have to adjust my bangs with a straightener and fix random pieces that didn't curl for some reason, but I just let it air dry and it was perfect! Now I'm debating on buying one for my house because I loved how light my hair felt after.

    I really like the detail you provide. This is a topic I knew nothing about, until now. Thanks! A few questions: How often do you generally use a hard water shampoo? Once a month?...week? Every time you wash? Also, are chelating shampoos also clarifying shampoos too -- kind of a two-for-one?

  • @JannelleOShaughnessy

    @JannelleOShaughnessy

    4 жыл бұрын

    Chelating shampoos are also clarifying so you don’t need two shampoos! How often will be dependent on how often you wash, and how are your water is. When I was in Las Vegas I was washing every 4-7 days and used a chelating shampoo about once a month or every 4-7 washes. Now the water isn’t as hard and I’m seeing that I can go about 2 months before it’s needed. Start with once a month and go up/down from there depending on how your hair responds. Eventually you’ll know exactly when it’s needed!

    I live in Wisconsin too. You almost have to have a water softener. At least her idea about using distilled water is doable. The hard water makes the soap stick to my hair and skin, and it dries the hell out of them...and flattens my hair. My Gym has soft water, so....some times I'll shower there. Makes a huge difference. I'm going to try distilled water tomorrow.

All this time I thought it was just the lack of humidity here (LA) but this damn water has been tearing me up!! Ugh. I'm so mad. SO many wasted hours and money trying to detangle this hair & keep it from drying out. Looked up the water hardness level in my area & the water Co. literally said it's "very hard". Did the water bottle test and ZERO suds. I mean NO bubbles whatsoever - which also explains why I have to DOUSE myself in soap to get any kind of suds whenever I shower or wash my face! All this time since I'm not using well water I thought I was good. Fail. So angry rant completed - thank you for this. I'm running to the store now and can't wait to get my hair back to how manageable it once was.

    If it’s that bad it might be worth it to invest in one of those shower head adapters to soften the water a bit!!! My water was like that when I lived in vegas and it was always a work around! Good luck! ❤️

    I've been living in NC for 4 years and have had horrible problems with hard water. I'm a natural red head and read the chemical reaction between hard water and red hair makes it worse. I have calcium build up on my scalp, so bad it looks like dandruff. I can only go 2 days between washes, as my hair gets ungodly itchy, and actually starts to smell. I've lived in other states and have never had a problem with this.

    I read somewhere that some products, like shampoos, who have edta’s at the end of the list, have it just to balance the ph of the product. Does that also mean the edta won’t be an effective cleanser to remove minerals or is it still good for that?

    So apple cider vinegar is the only one I could understood. And the only one I can use at home. Do u apply this after the shampoo every wash day? I live in Guatemala!! I know now I have hardwater since the water don't come through and get stuck in the shower ... because of the crystallized sulfates u mention. How do u apply the apple cider vinegar prior to shampoo?

    Since moving to Cali, my hair has become so brittle, developed dryness, and overall just looks so damaged due to the hard water we have here. I got a keratin treatment, which was soon shortly destroyed after taking a shower ( I even used a sulfate-free shampoo.) $300 out the window! I did alot of research and discovered that washing your hair with distilled water is better, is that true?

    Better than hard water? Yes, all minerals are supposedly removed. However not all minerals are made equal, some are quite nice to have. Spring water would be better than distilled in this case if it’s all the same to you 😄 (cost wise)

    Just an FYI, if you do buy a shower head filter, find one that uses KDF-55. Do some research, as this is what removes most minerals and chlorine. However, these shower heads will not remove calcium or magnesium. The only way to do that is a soft water system.

    My hair is transitioning (I am a few months into this process) and my hairdresser said my well water is hard and hurting my curls. It did well at the hair salon and is back to awful here at home after my very first wash. I call it "sad, droopy hair". I have gotten a filter to use and am getting it installed for the shower and will do a final rinse and any wetting w/ distilled water from now on. I also got a chelating shampoo. Will these be enough to help it start to recover? I'm so new to all of this so it's a lot to take in and i feel really overwhelmed a lot of the time.
