Why Guy Williams Only Lasted for 5 Episodes of Bonanza

Ойын-сауық

Did you know that Guy Williams knew how to fence in real life before taking on his titular role on the 1957 series Zorro and that he received the role after auditioning for Walt Disney himself? Guy Williams was a popular television actor who rose to prominence during the late 1950s thanks to his portrayal of the titular character on the beloved action series Zorro, which was produced by Walt Disney. Prior to Guy’s breakout turn on the series, he had been struggling to make a name for himself in the industry for many years.

Guy’s parents had wanted him to become an insurance broker, like his father. However, Guy knew that his good looks and charm were enough to make a name for himself in the entertainment industry. Guy’s first work in the industry came as a fashion model before he eventually started receiving small roles on television. Guy had been working for over a decade and had been back and forth between California and New York City twice before receiving his titular role on the series Zorro, which proved his big break.
Following Guy’s time on the series Zorro, he performed a five-episode-long stint on the long-running Western series Bonanza. Guy had been hired onto the series with the intention of becoming the main character, but several facts came together to make the actor’s time on the show shorter than expected. After Guy’s short period of time working on the series Bonanza, the actor found another lead role on a hit television series, with the series in question this time being Lost in Space. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Guy Williams only lasted for five episodes of Bonanza.

I thought he was great as Zorro. He actually also worked as a substitute for my elementary school teacher, when she was out for an extended absence for a health problem. It was during a break in filming the show, during the late 50s, at Sherman Oaks Elementary. I was so impressed! He was really nice and fun, told us stories from the show, was incredibly handsome, and we all loved him. Even as a little kid, I wondered if they weren't paying him enough for his Zorro role, which was very popular, at the time. I still wonder... Due to it's location near Hollywood, there were many child actors attending school there, but it was still pretty impressive to have Zorro for your teacher!

Guy Williams was the perfect Zorro, the best ever before or since. I met him through watching the TV show and rode with him every week as he defended the poor and foiled the oppressors. I was ten years old when he first appeared as Zorro and immediately fell in love, and still love him to this day. He was as close to perfection as any man could get. How I wish I could have met him in reality! He will always, always be my idol.

In my family he was loved by two generations-My mother loved him as Zorro, and I loved him as John Robinson. The character of John Robinson was a hero for me when I was growing up. I've heard the cast members talk about him at conventions with fond and loving memories. I consider myself blessed to have had a wholesome gentleman as a role model for the kind of man I wanted to be.

Guy was the quintessential Zorro! No one, before or since, gave Zorro the charisma he did, and he made Diego a very likeable young man who just didn't have much of a talent for swordplay (or so it seemed). He's been my absolute favorite ever since Zorro premiered in 1957.

Guy Williams’ unsuccessful stint on Bonanza may have been a blessing. If he continued on that show, he never would have gotten the lead in Lost In Space. I was too young at the time to remember him in Zorro and his time on Bonanza was so brief that he’ll always be John Robinson (or Will Robinson’s) dad to me.

He was on Bonanza AFTER Lost In Space. He joined Bonanza after Pernell Roberts left. I don't know why Guy left Bonanza after only 4 episodes. Maybe the producers didn't want to keep him. And I don't know why Pernell Robert's came back and ended up leaving again. All I know is: Guy Williams gave up acting at the end of the 60s and moved to South Ameica.

@@davidpanetta6400 Guy was on" Bonanza" in five episodes WITH Pernell Roberts. He actually fell in love with Adam's girlfriend and they ride off "into the sunset" together at the end of the fifth episode. Originally Adam was supposed to marry her and move away but when Pernell decided to give it one more year they changed the scripts. This all happened in 1964, and then Guy got "Lost in Space" Oh...sorry...I didn't mean it to sound like that!

@@marlu1946 I thank you for reminding me that Pernell was in those episodes with Guy. However, very few tv shows were in color before 1966. Color film was very expensive and the production companies were losing money. Most of the shows were cancelled before the FTC and FCC finally got involved. It wasn't until 1965 when the cost of color film dropped and all shows were now required to be filmed in color. It wasn't until the 1966 season that all tv shows were now seen in color. I suppose the producers of Bonanza bit the bullet prior to the new regulations. At least now, everthing was now broadcast in color. Unfortunately, the majority of viewers couldn't afford a color tv. My mother and father both worked, yet it wasn't until 1972 when we finally got our first color tv set.

A clarification is needed, Guy Williams was supposed to replace Roberts, but Roberts changed his mind and wanted to stay, so they married Willams character off. Also Lost in Space ratings were still good enough for a 4th season, but reportedly Irwin Allen and CBS had a few disagreements which ended the series.

I was eleven years old when Lost in Space came out, in the first few episode the show was exciting and fun to watch, then they landed on the planets a couple times and that was the end of the show in my eyes. Even as an eleven year old I thought the writing was awful. The scrips were ridiculous and the father, John Robinson was supposed to be the star and lead player in the show. John Robinson, the father was great and I loved him from Zorro, I was only 4 when it started but I still remembered Guy Williams when Lost in Space came out. I'll never understand why but the writers focused on Zachary Smith and Will Robinson as the main character and in my mind that was the end of the show, I still watched it but like I said, even as a little kid I though the show was just stupid and foolish. Smith detracted from the show in my mind, they needed to get off those boring planets and get the ship back into space which I loved. Zachary Smith was a good actor but he didn't fit in LIS.

Also, the Disney Zorro cast members worked remarkably well together, especially those who had recurring roles on the show. As someone who has spent a fair amount of time with the Bonanza fandom, I would say that people are correct in saying that Michael Landon was reported as being far less than thrilled that someone with Guy's experience and fame was joining the show. In a weird way, I think Michael preferred Pernell, as someone who was bored with show and didn't want to expend too much energy on it to someone with Guy's good lucks and physicality becoming the 'fourth Cartwright' and possibly stealing some of the plot lines (and fans) that Michael preferred to get. And, in the end, I think Lorne Green, Michael Landon and Dan Blocker were all happy to split the lead salaries three ways instead of four ways when Pernell did finally leave after another year. Guy was treated shabbily, being brought in with some hoopla that he would be joining the cast permanently, and then instead unceremoniously booted off after those five episodes. Didn't help that the plot, which had been building towards Adam marrying and leaving the Ponderosa, turned instead into a contrived triangle between himself, his fiancee and 'cousin Will', with Will and the former fiancee leaving at the end. I wish it had worked out differently, because the Bonanza format did kind of change at times between episodes involving the whole family and those concentrating more on one character, and at least Guy would have had the chance to take the spotlight occasionally. I have just recently begun to rewatch the whole 'Lost in Space' series, and I have to say that it is hard to see Guy and the others pushed out of the spotlight for the show to become the "Dr. Smith, the Robot and Will Follies". Maybe after his earlier disappointments with film contracts, Guy was philosophical enough to take top billing and a (hopefully) decent salary in a show that didn't begin to utilize his real talents.

Unfortunately Lost in Space which started off strong in the 1st season regulated Professor Robinson and family drama in favor of the flavor of that time campy and simple minded writers! I don’t blame the cast for that either! Great cast excellent chemistry and silly stories! 2nd season did all the damage but even though out the camp nonsense Guy from time to time shines as great leadership/father and that’s what I love about him and absolutely a great ZORRO as seen in 3rd season homage sword 🗡 fighting Dr.Smith clones decked out in 3 Musketeers outfits! I heard Guy nearly quit Lost In Space as well cause when he first auditioned Irwin Allen the creator of Lost In Space sold Guy on the role by saying his character is the guy who flies spaceship and for most of the first season we see Guy’s character of Professor Robinson as the lead. By the second season Lost In Space had become the campy Dr. Smith, Will Robinson and the Robot show and they’d bring Guy in during the last 10 minutes of the episode to save the day. Guy confronted Irwin Allen and said this was not what he signed up for and threatened to quit when his contract was up. Irwin didn’t want lose Guy so by the 3rd season they threw in a hand full of episodes of a more serious note that centered on Guy.

Where did you get your information on why Guy Williams did not stay on Bonanza? Pernell Roberts was due to leave at the End of Season 5, which is why Guy Williams was drafted to play Will Cartwright. Pernell Roberts had a change of heart and agreed to do one more season. This sealed the fate of Will Cartwright (and Guy Williams). In my opinion, the head honchos at Bonanaza had a perfect replacement in Guy Williams and a perfect reason for his character to be there; also they had a handsome man in Guy Williams and given his legion of Zorro Fans, I believe would have outshone Michael Landon's spotlight re: women falling in love with him - so I believe Guy Williams staying on Bonanza was in jeopardy from the moment the first scene had been shot and I think that jeopardy came from Pernell Roberts, who believed he was the show, and Michael Landon who, according to co-stars, was practically running the show by then. So if Guy Williams truly didn't enjoy his time on Bonanza, I think I can guess why.

Since I'm such a big fan of Bonanza, I'd have to say my favorite Guy Williams role was that of Will Cartwright, even though it was only for 5 episodes. Along with the character of Will Cartwright having such a low approval rating with the fans. I've also heard rumors that Guy Williams and Michael Landon (who had quite a bit of pull on the show at that time) didn't get along very well. If there were any truth to this rumor, this might have also have been a determining factor in Guy Williams short tenue on the show.

The real reason was that the surviving 3 didn't want to split the money with a new guy and made things difficult for him. He showed what a class act he was by saying, if they don't want me here, I'll go, which cost NBC plenty because Pernell Roberts insisted on his pound of flesh from the network. The remaining 3 also pulled the same stunt with David Canary when he wanted star billing (and money) uintil he left. Then Dan Blocker died and they had to bring him back. As the Klingons say...

Guy got seriously screwed over on Lost in Space. He was supposed to be the star but instead they made Dr. Smith and the kid the main actors. On top of it all the writers were unimaginative buffoons whose scripts were pure trash. I remember as a 12 year old kid when the show came out that the writing was terrible, I remember thinking I could come up with better story lines. LIS was doomed with those writers and Zachary Smith.

Or rather, I would have never accepted to work in a Western series where cowboys don't carry guns and where they solve all their problems with dialog and understanding. yeah, right. Even Star Trek was more realistic because even if 500 years in the future, Kirk and the rest used to solve their differences with hostile people and creatures resorting to the good, old and proven bar fistfight.
