They made a revised show called Ponderosa based on the same characters but an earlier time period than Bonanza, it's well done. Bonanza fans check it out! Ben Cartwright is played by Daniel Hugh Kelly.

Yes "The Ponderosa" was it's name, it was basically a prequel to "Bonanza". Same characters, same Exec. Producer - David Dortort. It follows the story of Ben Cartwright & his family as they settle in Eagle's Nest, Nevada Territory (later renamed Virginia City). Ben has brought the family from New Orleans where he met & married Marie (Ben's third wife & Joseph's mother), Joseph was a child in this series. They weren't a powerful family then, in fact they worked @ the general store & lived in boarding rooms. After Marie died, they began to build the Ponderosa on what started out as a small parcel of land because it had been Ben's & her dream. They even freed a much younger Hop Sing of his indenture from a nasty woman who owned the saloon. Little by little they acquired more land & became the ranchers & timber barons we came to know as Ben, Adam, Hoss (Eric), & Joseph Cartwright (& Hop Sing too) the beloved characters of "Bonanza".

In the episode, "Enter Thomas Bowers", which aired in 1964, Bonanza aired an episode about racism. Very subtle but it did. William Marshall played an African American opera singer who was discriminated against. He was denied lodging and food because of his race. Hoss befriended him. Excellent written episode for the time.

Michael Landon and Lorne Greene both said they saw the writing on the wall for the show when Dan Blocker died. When Lorne Greene heard the news, he reportedly told his wife "That's it, Bonanza's done," and Michael Landon said in an interview "When Dan Blocker died, Bonanza died with him."

Dan Blocker was the heart and soul of the show. Pernell Robert’s took himself and the show way to seriously. Bonanza should have been canceled after 11 seasons with all due respect to Mitch Vogel beginning in the 1970-71 season the show just lost its luster.

Roberts and Landon were also arguing on set up until Robert's left the show. A local LA newspaper published an article describing the rift between Landon and Roberts as "political in nature" as Roberts was well known for his liberal and somewhat "outlandish" Rhetoric. Two great actors with two totally different personalities.

Honestly a tough but necessary decision was made. It might have been hard to continue without Dan Blocker aka Hoss. But they could have made an episode where they just killed him off without explaining much, just have a funeral and introduce a cousin to come and help out. Then after about 8 episodes they could have gauged everything with their audience and the new cousin character.

I think any show should go out while it is popular. Some have dragged on long after the public have grown weary of it, and episodes are repeated in a dressed up style. I think Bonanza producers did the right thing, and we can now enjoy the re runs.

My favorite show. Actually, Greene was slated to return in the next gen movies but due to health problems couldn't make it. Good thing too because the movies were horrible. They completely blew the original story lines from the original in many ways. One common misconception was that the ranch house in Lake Tahoe was used in the original series. It was not. The house was a sound stage. The Tahoe house was used in TNG but hadn't even been built until 1969. After Blocker died, they brought in the Jamie and Grif characters trying to bring in a younger demographic to save the show, but it didn't work.

Personally, I believe there was still much demand for Bonanza even after its demise. I felt like the prequel, Ponderosa could have done well if it had been made by people who knew and loved the characters. First of all, it was filmed in Australia, where it was foggy and gloomy much of the time. The terrain was too different. The producer was obviously an environmentalist and "peace-nik" as in the episode where an obviously older Adam was told by Ben he couldn't have a hand gun. I believe Adam was supposed to be about 19 years old. Ridiculous! In the real "old west," a young man of that age certainly would have been able to carry weapons for self-protection. Overall, I liked Ponderosa (maybe just because I was missing my Cartwright family) and wish it had gone more than one season.
