Grand Seiko! The watch brand that's is decidedly different from many of the other watch brands at their level. Does their intense quest for perfection hurt them? Maybe. Does it also give them a legendary status? Why, yes. Yes it does. Today we are looking at their best dress watches from a bajillion dollars...to under $4,000 (used).

Who would want to, though. So boring.
I did 12 weeks of internship at Vacheron Constantin (and they're good, boy they are good) as part of my final year at WOSTEP (2001-2004) and even way back then some of the watchmakers at VC talked about GS (only on social occasions after hours and never on the job) as being incredible value for money and how meticulous they were in Japan. They also, like most people within the industry praised JLC in pretty much the same way so it's no surprise to me GS is where they are right now.

Yeah, I was shocked when I walked around the Watches Of Switzerland in Vegas and they had a big Grand Seiko display with a selection of GS watches. I asked why. The salesman said that they were exquisite pieces and serious value for what you're getting with respect to build quality and design, and that they were honored to carry such great watches. That pretty much tells you how the Swiss really feel about Japanese watches.
Man, I love Grand Seiko so much. I can’t wait to own one one day!

Grand Seiko is growing organically. They are creating fanatic customers and those customers love it. Great brand. Great watches. Hoping they remain accessible.

“Growing organically,” definitely, is an excellent way to describe GS. Without artificially creating hypes, they make their customers fall in love with their products. When I got myself a well-known luxury Swiss watch, I must admit the purchase was prompted primarily by the prospect of the watch being a “good investment” and I, unfortunately, wasn’t necessarily in love with the product itself. On the other hand, when I saw GS’s Godzilla, I wasn’t familiar with GS but I absolutely had to have it, even @ the price tag of US$12,000+.
I’m one of the remarkably fortunate handful of Americans who got the Hana Ikada earlier this year. Stunned by it every single time I look at it

I love my SBGW231. I found it used in perfect condition for $3k. The finishing, design and value for the money is insane. It really is a bargain Calatrava.
One thing I wish GS did was to finish their mechanical movements to the same levels as their highest grade spring drive movements from their micro artist studio. Finishing level even Philippe Dufour praises.
GS Spring drive, most important innovation in watches since quartz, totally underrated

Be sure to include King Seiko with that discussion. The KS 4502 has the best case design. The current 44GS cases are the modern version of the KS case.
Grand Seiko is my favorite lux watch. I especially love the vintage offerings. The case shape of the lat 60s early 70s are so angular yet so flowing.
I absolutely love the SBGW series. I personally have the SBGW287 Boshū and it is so killer. The deep burgundy/wine dial with its subtle texture is absolutely gorgeous.
Just might be your best video/content/ analysis to date! So so good. Cheers 🍻
As a 3D artist, I found your insights very interesting about the use of 3D rendering on the GS website. A lot of watch brands are starting to resort to CGI means for their commercial imagery, including Rolex and Omega, but you're right, when you take away the human element of seeing it on a wrist, for example, it does feel sterile and sometimes renderings alone don't quite convey how the watch truly looks and feels.
Saw your review of GS and the spring drive which compelled me to buy one this week ... HOWEVER ... Grand Seiko - Quality Control and Company Response TBD!! Heard so much about the Grand Seiko line and the Lake Suwa watch. The Spring Drive truly is in theory a great innovation and the sweeping second hand is impressive to look at. Quick run down: Bought one in Japan from authorized GS dealer and two days later found that the 5 day claim was inaccurate because it stopped after less than one day. Yes and the rear case back power reserve showed that it was full. Just two days and I never even sized or wore it yet. I immediately took it back to GS dealer that has offered to send it in to GS repair center to see what happened. This is somewhat concerning because list price is over 9K and you wouldn't expect this to happen to a Grand Seiko! I told the GS dealer if it requires opening up to repair I want a new replacement because this is brand new/never worn. So how would you feel if you bought a new watch and immediately it needed emergency care? Let's see how Grand Seiko responds to this "hopefully anomaly" and do the right thing because if Im the manufacturer and its an internal issue I would surely want to do the right thing and replace it right away. So far a bit disappointed to say the least and your viewers should be aware of this issue as well if they are considering this model.

so... what did GS say to you?
I love how Christian's perception on Seikos have gradually changed as T&H delved deeper and deeper into the brand. Cheers mates!
The one thing I don't understand about Grand Seiko is why they don't name their models like the Swiss brands do. Makes it more difficult to understand the significance of each model and its connection to the rest of the collection when you just get a reference number rather than something like Speedmaster, Explorer, Carrera, Santos, Luminor, Chronomat, etc. One of my dream watches is the SBGE255, but I have no clue what the history of this model is with respect to the rest of Grand Seiko's offerings. It just kind of feels like you're always buying a "Grand Seiko" and then what your particular watch is is just the set of specifications (case/movement/dial) that you wanted most.

and more specifically, brilliant hard titanium, the upper level alloy from GS. 2.5 x harder than steel and even brighter tone, so that's probably why they got confused
What I like about Grand Seiko is they dgaf about people’s opinions. They’re probably the most punk rock company around. I highly doubt their company is ran by bean counters like other companies.
Besides the lack of micro adjustment clasps, GS also should upgrade their straps with quick release feature.

The biggest thing grand seiko needs to work on is their branding / public perception
I spoke in a single sentence, without punctuation, that lasted throughout the duration of this video. 🙃 Fantastic Grand Seiko content, guys!
For me in the UK, I think they need more places that have grand seikos in store to look at.
The transition to Masterworks is, masterful.
Completely agree about the ways to improve the experience of Grand Seiko. Make the models easy to understand, and acknowledge the public's criticism of the bracelet and improve it. Have a global event, and take a stance on how your brand will be presented to the world from now on. A perfect example of this is Toyota. They said "No more boring cars" at an international car show. They acknowledged the criticism head on and said "I hear you and I value that feedback" so from here on out, we're only going to make bangin sexy looking cars while still being us. They've been EVEN MORE popular ever since. Grand Seiko can do the same thing and boost their brand presence much more. Not with more beautiful models, but with a reimagining of how they want the customer to experience their brand. New website, NAME your models instead of giving them codes, develop 2 or 3 KILLER bracelets, and see how much easier new customers will come
Somebody got a Grand Seiko job😅
I was talking to an AD when I was looking at an SBGW285, and we discussed their image-language. He had been an visited them in Japan and the topic had came up. What he told me was that they actually do that way of photography to make it look as a rendering, since they believe that it best conveys the finishing. I don’t doubt it, as they somehow manage to be the one brand where the watches comes without the slightest spec of dust. Tl;dr: “they are not renderings they are just so perfect”. I still believe they are renderings tho…

Looking at my white birch I cannot see anywhere any picture or video capable of conveying the same luster/shining/all round beauty in the details and precision. It’s just not possible with a camera. They make watches made to be looked at with our eyes, not with our phones and cameras.

@@mad_wisdom exactly! A perfect polish will look rendered on photos because it’s just so good. Can’t capture it!
They really do need to make recognized names for their watches the number letter combos are exhausting to say the least!
Grand Seiko needs to start making 18 karat gold watch bracelets. 👍
Aside from their beautiful dials, I find there’s little to love in Grand Seiko’s design language.
Only thing grand seiko isn’t absolutely crushing is bracelets and thinning out some of their sports models a tad. But man such great pieces.
I like to buy something above the tier of my SLA055 and I would love to buy a GS. I want the dive watch aesthetic and a GS however they make only big dive watches and it does not look good on my thin wrists. So now I am eyeing a 40mm Submariner which I have fitted and it feels right for my wrist. It sucks that GS only make divers so big which is sad.
@Ryan-cv9me
Жыл бұрын
I own a GS SBGA229 and a 116610LN and like that they’re different sizes. My wrist is about 7 1/2 in. They can both have a place in a collection, although I hear you on the larger sizes. The GS is more like a sea dweller in its sizing and less like a “skin diver”. Due to the case shape it does wear more like a 42mm than a 44mm and has more wrist presence than the SD due to the dial/case diameter. I’d like to see a divers watch in a 40-42mm that uses a similar case. I think they’re testing that with Seiko’s new GMT Diver with mm200 case.
Love the new intro lads
I'm expecting a GS SBGA493 (red dial) sometime next week. I admit that part of my reason was FOMO (fear of missing out) as it's allegedly limited to 500 pieces. I say "allegedly" because I have heard that some limited-edition models end up becoming regular production models later. I don't recall if this was directed at GS or not. In any event, I have always been fascinated by the Spring Drive, so that's the major reason for my purchase. I own a Rolex Day-Date and love the President bracelet. Aside from looking great, it feels good on my wrist as well. With all the mention of the GS bracelets, I'm already fearful that I won't like it, but the GS I ordered comes with a kimono fabric strap, so that may be an option if the bracelet is as bad as some say.

limted edition stays limited, however they may duplicate most of the watch in another model (see the lake suwa series of dials). Your power indicator will always be gold though and any other models will be most likely steel so... that's something?

Ackshually, Casio dominates my price range 😂 Great video, love Grand Seiko!
Bought one the sakura a month ago im not kidding i wear it everyday. It is not the finishing that matter for me like everyone said. It is weight, simplicity, reliability. The weight of this watch my God i like watches that doesnt feel like wearing one. Also they are very simple therefore i can wear anything with it. Also spring drive man they are very accurate.
I love GS and Rolex. I own them both and appreciate the technical engineering of the Spring Drive. However, most people know Rolex. They've never heard of GS and mistake GRAND Seiko with Seiko= reality.
These prices are insane. I own an Omega 18k rose gold Black face sub-dial second with a matching 18k gold buckle. I will cost you approximately $17,000 today. Absolutely gorgeous accurate watch. I get constant comments on this watch. My watch is unique because I bought my watch four years ago. It is a 1949 Omega Tresor that came out of Israel. I bought the 18k rose buckle. I bought a handmade black alligator band. The total invested is $1700. The watch has had many compliments. It reeks quality because it is quality. No plating to rub off. You guys chase the moon with your watches. But for $1700 I have a watch I am proud of.
Love that most of the video your reference was actually Patek, not Rolex. You managed to go down that path only towards the end of the video and I get it, Rolex is the big shark in the ocean, the one everyone is looking at but I disagree on the need to propose an Explorer or Submariner alternative. GS should continue to propose its delicate but gigantic, total, present and seemingly effortless message of research for precision and sooner or later the showstopper watch that everyone in the world will desire will come by itself. And unlike kings that want to be kings they will be kings by leading like kings.
the SBGX353 is on my wishlist.....ill def get it.
The Credor Eichi II is a porcelain dial, not enamel.
Grand Seiko truly reigns supreme in quality! 👑⌚

Sbgw259 is titanium not steel. The steel ver has white dial w blued hands
Gentlemen, the SBGW 259 is a unique piece; it’s GS’s proprietarySuper Hard Brilliant Titanium , not stainless steel.
I have one problem with GS. I am a bracelet guy and the difference in quality between the actual watch/dial and bracelet is incredibly large.
Agree with everything you guys are saying. Watches are products + stories. The nature angle is interesting and they should lean into it but they have way too many models, makes their lineup unintelligible. One more thing - their movements. Lots of interesting ideas but ultimately too many choices. Pick a technology, lean into it, and tell me why it's the best.

oddly enough, their SBGP001 was one HUGE misstep they made because of how much that simplicity clashes with their higher end watches. on a leather strap, it feels a lot more elegant than a lot of their precious metal offerings
Great watches appreciated by those who understand them. For the average person who is solely impressed by brand names, it's just another Seiko. A Nisan GTR is an incredible car, but it's still a Nissan.
Love their dials and hands, some absolutely gorgeous watches in the lineup. But as a bracelet guy myself they are seriously sub par compared to the rest of the watch. Little to no adjustments, cheap feeling, and the finish on the 'G S' on the clasps looks like something off a toy watch almost. The difference in quality between the watch, hands and case and then the bracelet is really jarring and obvious. If the bracelets were better id have already probably bought the silver birch model.
It’s bad enough suffering the adds before and during the video but do we have to listen to them for minutes within the video itself?
Seiko = Toyota...Grand Seiko = Lexus.....
Ben Climer and his friends have pushed GS in the auctions; When GS prices themselves next to Patek AP Vacheron Lange and so on and they are lacking in the movement department, their offering is great but should not be priced where it is at. They have added value in areas where in my opinion, it does not matter as much in comparison to the other brands, should GS be priced next to an FP Journe?
I’m still waiting for the “BOOM..WatchShop”

Grand Seiko is unbothered. I love that they do what they do, and you are welcome to buy a share of their artistry or not. It's very Japanese. Remember all those 90's sports cars? The NSX, Supra, 300ZX twin turbo? We'll give you all of this technology and performance at a lower price to the Europeans, but we'll also give you an interior from a Camry. That's how GS feels about bracelets.

They need to stop concerning themselves with competing with Rolex. They need to take aim at the environment of Lange, FPJ. Their polishing and concern for beauty, elegance, and unique take on complications put them in a better place to compete in that space.

GS fan here. I don't think your fascination with the more expensive (over 10K) models will tempt prospective buyers to sit through the whole episode. Immediately showing a $100K model aimed at Asian billionaires and Saudi royalty is doing GS a disservice. Concentrating on the 'below 10K' models from all lines would've been, IMHO, a far better introduction of GS to those unfamiliar with the brand.
