I did 12 weeks of internship at Vacheron Constantin (and they're good, boy they are good) as part of my final year at WOSTEP (2001-2004) and even way back then some of the watchmakers at VC talked about GS (only on social occasions after hours and never on the job) as being incredible value for money and how meticulous they were in Japan. They also, like most people within the industry praised JLC in pretty much the same way so it's no surprise to me GS is where they are right now.

Yeah, I was shocked when I walked around the Watches Of Switzerland in Vegas and they had a big Grand Seiko display with a selection of GS watches. I asked why. The salesman said that they were exquisite pieces and serious value for what you're getting with respect to build quality and design, and that they were honored to carry such great watches. That pretty much tells you how the Swiss really feel about Japanese watches.

“Growing organically,” definitely, is an excellent way to describe GS. Without artificially creating hypes, they make their customers fall in love with their products. When I got myself a well-known luxury Swiss watch, I must admit the purchase was prompted primarily by the prospect of the watch being a “good investment” and I, unfortunately, wasn’t necessarily in love with the product itself. On the other hand, when I saw GS’s Godzilla, I wasn’t familiar with GS but I absolutely had to have it, even @ the price tag of US$12,000+.

As a 3D artist, I found your insights very interesting about the use of 3D rendering on the GS website. A lot of watch brands are starting to resort to CGI means for their commercial imagery, including Rolex and Omega, but you're right, when you take away the human element of seeing it on a wrist, for example, it does feel sterile and sometimes renderings alone don't quite convey how the watch truly looks and feels.

Saw your review of GS and the spring drive which compelled me to buy one this week ... HOWEVER ... Grand Seiko - Quality Control and Company Response TBD!! Heard so much about the Grand Seiko line and the Lake Suwa watch. The Spring Drive truly is in theory a great innovation and the sweeping second hand is impressive to look at. Quick run down: Bought one in Japan from authorized GS dealer and two days later found that the 5 day claim was inaccurate because it stopped after less than one day. Yes and the rear case back power reserve showed that it was full. Just two days and I never even sized or wore it yet. I immediately took it back to GS dealer that has offered to send it in to GS repair center to see what happened. This is somewhat concerning because list price is over 9K and you wouldn't expect this to happen to a Grand Seiko! I told the GS dealer if it requires opening up to repair I want a new replacement because this is brand new/never worn. So how would you feel if you bought a new watch and immediately it needed emergency care? Let's see how Grand Seiko responds to this "hopefully anomaly" and do the right thing because if Im the manufacturer and its an internal issue I would surely want to do the right thing and replace it right away. So far a bit disappointed to say the least and your viewers should be aware of this issue as well if they are considering this model.

The one thing I don't understand about Grand Seiko is why they don't name their models like the Swiss brands do. Makes it more difficult to understand the significance of each model and its connection to the rest of the collection when you just get a reference number rather than something like Speedmaster, Explorer, Carrera, Santos, Luminor, Chronomat, etc. One of my dream watches is the SBGE255, but I have no clue what the history of this model is with respect to the rest of Grand Seiko's offerings. It just kind of feels like you're always buying a "Grand Seiko" and then what your particular watch is is just the set of specifications (case/movement/dial) that you wanted most.

Completely agree about the ways to improve the experience of Grand Seiko. Make the models easy to understand, and acknowledge the public's criticism of the bracelet and improve it. Have a global event, and take a stance on how your brand will be presented to the world from now on. A perfect example of this is Toyota. They said "No more boring cars" at an international car show. They acknowledged the criticism head on and said "I hear you and I value that feedback" so from here on out, we're only going to make bangin sexy looking cars while still being us. They've been EVEN MORE popular ever since. Grand Seiko can do the same thing and boost their brand presence much more. Not with more beautiful models, but with a reimagining of how they want the customer to experience their brand. New website, NAME your models instead of giving them codes, develop 2 or 3 KILLER bracelets, and see how much easier new customers will come

I was talking to an AD when I was looking at an SBGW285, and we discussed their image-language. He had been an visited them in Japan and the topic had came up. What he told me was that they actually do that way of photography to make it look as a rendering, since they believe that it best conveys the finishing. I don’t doubt it, as they somehow manage to be the one brand where the watches comes without the slightest spec of dust. Tl;dr: “they are not renderings they are just so perfect”. I still believe they are renderings tho…

I own a GS SBGA229 and a 116610LN and like that they’re different sizes. My wrist is about 7 1/2 in. They can both have a place in a collection, although I hear you on the larger sizes. The GS is more like a sea dweller in its sizing and less like a “skin diver”. Due to the case shape it does wear more like a 42mm than a 44mm and has more wrist presence than the SD due to the dial/case diameter. I’d like to see a divers watch in a 40-42mm that uses a similar case. I think they’re testing that with Seiko’s new GMT Diver with mm200 case.

I'm expecting a GS SBGA493 (red dial) sometime next week. I admit that part of my reason was FOMO (fear of missing out) as it's allegedly limited to 500 pieces. I say "allegedly" because I have heard that some limited-edition models end up becoming regular production models later. I don't recall if this was directed at GS or not. In any event, I have always been fascinated by the Spring Drive, so that's the major reason for my purchase. I own a Rolex Day-Date and love the President bracelet. Aside from looking great, it feels good on my wrist as well. With all the mention of the GS bracelets, I'm already fearful that I won't like it, but the GS I ordered comes with a kimono fabric strap, so that may be an option if the bracelet is as bad as some say.

Little to no adjustments, cheap feeling, and the finish on the 'G S' on the clasps looks like something off a toy watch almost. The difference in quality between the watch, hands and case and then the bracelet is really jarring and obvious. If the bracelets were better id have already probably bought the silver birch model.

Ben Climer and his friends have pushed GS in the auctions; When GS prices themselves next to Patek AP Vacheron Lange and so on and they are lacking in the movement department, their offering is great but should not be priced where it is at. They have added value in areas where in my opinion, it does not matter as much in comparison to the other brands, should GS be priced next to an FP Journe?

Evolution 9 fixed bezel is a call back to the Seiko Navigator Timer GMT from the 1960s. It predates the Explorer II.

Grand Seiko is unbothered. I love that they do what they do, and you are welcome to buy a share of their artistry or not. It's very Japanese. Remember all those 90's sports cars? The NSX, Supra, 300ZX twin turbo? We'll give you all of this technology and performance at a lower price to the Europeans, but we'll also give you an interior from a Camry. That's how GS feels about bracelets.

I’ll take a boring interior over a droopy E30/E36 headliner, burned out pixels, cracked dashboards, and dodgy window regulators common in European/US cars of the same era.

They need to stop concerning themselves with competing with Rolex. They need to take aim at the environment of Lange, FPJ. Their polishing and concern for beauty, elegance, and unique take on complications put them in a better place to compete in that space.

Agreed Grand Seiko needs a relaunch much like relaunch of Tudor going back a decade now, look what they were able to do. They absolutely have ability to grab up a their fair share of Swiss watch equivalent. With defined models and all around update Grand Seiko could put a dent in the Swiss market

GS fan here. I don't think your fascination with the more expensive (over 10K) models will tempt prospective buyers to sit through the whole episode. Immediately showing a $100K model aimed at Asian billionaires and Saudi royalty is doing GS a disservice. Concentrating on the 'below 10K' models from all lines would've been, IMHO, a far better introduction of GS to those unfamiliar with the brand.
