Lei, this video is possibly your best to date ... or at least in the top 10! It's an amazing bit of analysis; given your area of expertise I'd expect nothing less. It is one of those "once explained the answers seem so no obvious" but of course if it were it would have been revealed decades ago. Additionally, you have made the analytical system so understandable that almost any hobbiest with a cell phone and a drafting app capable of determining whether that expensive online goldfish purchase they are about to make from just a couple of side view photos will turnout to be an unstable mistake or a great investment. Thank you, once again for your insight and dedication!

@@GoldfishCorner Lei, I've been lurking and listening 🐡 I am particularly enjoying your shorts on the traditional Chinese goldfish vessels ... they are so beautiful. The various different examples have me yearning for those ancient days. I know they were the purview of the wealthy but just the same they are all amazingly beautiful and very easily adapted for even a plibean such as myself. Most I am sure are unavailable in North America but I have seen those extremely large ornately decorated glazed clay and ceramic pots which are available and very affordable. Is there any chance you might produce a video on adapting one of those to current keeping standards?

@@GoldfishCorner It would be also interesting to check how the wen shape influences fish balance. I noticed that some fish, mainly orandas with wen just on the top of the head tend to have more problems, but as usual that may be just a small puzzle in a bigger picture :)

Hi Lei, very interesting this analysis you have done on the stability of goldfish swimming and Oranda, Ranchu. Your works and diagrams are not very accurate. The more the fish has a spherical shape with the line that joins the mouth to the tail, the more it has a greater stability in swimming. Then the initial risk factors also include problems with the swim bladder which can also affect the swimming of subjects considered to be swimming stable. The Shubunkin has all the characteristics of stability and also balance compared to the others. Furthermore, its shape gives it a neutral buoyancy in the water. Happy Sunday!

Thanks Lei! Very interesting observations. Is this your own work and theory? Did you find any such discussion in the available literature? I’m going to try to put this into my practice and see what I find. I think it will be really helpful for trying to determine the comportment fish I’m thinking of buying. And I’ll enjoy thinking about this when watching my own fish! Thank you, for great content as always!

Half and half. There is an ancient Chinese goldfish book talking about even body shape. A year ago, I read online articles talking about body-shape analysis for goldfish (check the Reference Links in the Video Description). Then my work is to extend the analysis to several different breeds and compile the detailed analysis procedures & criteria. Obviously, Xray is the best way to confirm a swim bladder issue. However, we can not carry X-Ray when we buy goldfish. The practical benefit of my method is to qualitatively assess goldfish by your bare eyes without the need for an X-Ray. One limitation of my method may be the unevenly distributed goldfish body mass. So far, my theory has been validated for Ryukin, natural-body-shaped goldfish (common, comet goldfish), and Chinese Ranchu. However, I have not verified with Thai Ranchu. You know Thai Ranchu has a crazy curve back with a peak point behind the pelvic fin. Based on my theory, Thai Ranchu should have more tendency with swimming head-down issue. I like to hear your thoughts.

Yes, they do but normally blend it into the pellet food. Duck weed is a good choice, too.
