I used it as such for many years and gifted it to a friend that expressed how much she liked it. I had heard the glugging but I also knew it was odd because the shape of the vase was odd but I never imagined it was intentionally created.

    in future situations where you plan to break smth open to find out what's inside, try pouring in silicone molding putty (trying to get every part of the inside covered) and let that cure. if you aren't able to remove it by hand, then break the item, and you'll have a cast of the interior of the item/less guesswork to do than reconstructing those pieces.

    There's a Belgian beer called Kwak that has to be served in a particular rounded bottom glass with long neck, which is placed on a wooden holding. It's designed to glug when you tilt it to drink, so the movement reactivates the beer foam and the subtle flavours. It's delicious, by the way

    what would happen if when the jug is empty you fill it while holding it at certain angles so that as you fill it, the water completely fills the closed tail side, and you change the angle ever so slightly so that while you're still filling it with water the air doesnt shift to the tail? would the gluggle jug cease to glug bubbles until you poor enough water out for bubbles to glug in the gluggle jug once again? (i had fun writing that)

    hi steve, as you saw when you broke it open, the thickness of the walls in the ceramic jar are all equal. that's because it was created by pouring the slurry into a mould and water tends to seek its own level. sometimes the mould it gently rocked back and forth and tapped to release bubbles so inconsistancies do occur.

    He actually touched on that, he said it was the shape that contributes to the loudness because it’s much more open allowing more sound to escape. But it’s not shaped very much like a phonograph, more so just open in general. Phonographs have a significantly more dramatic opening shape. Almost anything that produces sounds uses a variation of those types of shape to a degree, to moderate between sound direction/precision and loudness/dissipation.

    @@monhi64 As an acoustical engineer, I think there is at least some impedance matching horn effect. Especially if you freeze frame at 5:08, the air space between the water and the top edge of the 2D jug model has a shape very reminiscent of a conical horn cross section. I'll concede that moment is not one where a bubble is glugging up, but I think it illustrates how the combination of the waterline and vase can make a very horn-like shape. I'm thinking about experimenting with this on a 3D printer. I'm curious if an even more pronounced horn could give it an even better "glug."

    @@TheRationalPi I’m no acoustical engineer but I am an engineer not that it’s super relevant lmao. I’m curious what you mean tho, I checked out the time stamp and I think you’re talking about the shape that the water and his 3D print makes. But I don’t think you can consider water the same as a metal horn, I thought water is fairly pressure wave absorbent and wouldn’t reverberate correctly to amplify. The actual outline of the chamber is pretty consistent just open.

  • @TheRationalPi

    @TheRationalPi

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@monhi64 From an acoustic standpoint, the water is basically a hard wall for the sound in air. What matters on reflection at the air-water interface is the ratio of the specific acoustic impedance of air and of water. At 1:1, there's perfect transmission, but the ratio from air-to-water is around 1:3500, which gives 99.95% reflection. You are probably being thrown off because sound travels really far in the ocean, but that has more to do with bulk energy loss in water.

    "depending on which hole you cover" -- without knowing anything about the teapot, that right here is the key. I'll make a guess that there are two containers inside it, each with a different liquid and each connected to the one of the two different holes. When you cover one hole, you block air from rushing in so the liquid is stopped by the outside pressure. You need the little hole for air to rush in when you pour the liquid so that pressure inside would be the same as pressure outside.

    There's a particular kind of Port bottle that has a very pronounced shoulder, and so as you tip it to pour the first glass when it's very full, you get a very satisfactory glug before the first of the drink emerges. It's quite quiet though, as explained with the normal water bottle. It also has a slightly 'syrupy' tone, which is because (I guess) the nature of the liquid doesn't produce so many high frequencies. I need a frequency analyser!

Where basically, a fluid which is forced into a small hole, creates a jet force coming out the back. It can be used in jet engines to increase thrust quite a bit. The water is getting pushed in that small enclosure, making it blast out very quickly. Cool little science method that is used in a lot of things

    You've set my expectations too high now! I'm surprised you didn't end up making a Super Gluggle Jug with an extended resonance chamber and narrowing channel thickness to support vibrations at more fluid levels.

    I remember playing with my dads lighter as a kid, it was ine of those transparent rechargeable clippos, had 2 chambers, and the pressurized gas ( in liquid state) made the same bubbles when going from one chamber to the other when tipping the lighter. No sound though...

  • @minerharry

    @minerharry

    I wonder if it didn’t make a sound because the vibrations were much more readily absorbed by the gas and thus not as transferred to the lighter body and to our ears? Since water is incompressible and all

  • @SanaSamaha

    @SanaSamaha

    I'm pretty sure it didn't make a (audible) sound because they're so small. I've played with those transparent lighters before too. It's not a lot of liquid, which is the thing actually making the sound, not the air bubbles.
