Why Formula 1 Can't Race Here (Mount Panorama, Bathurst)

Спорт

It's the mountain. Australia's famous circuit which is home to races such as the Bathurst 1000 and Bathurst 12 hour. This circuit has been made famous thanks to the incredible layout, scary sections, bumps, walls, Kangaroos and the high speeds cars reach on the long straights. Formula 1 at Bathurst has always been a fun thing to imagine but just because we haven't raced there, it doesn't mean a Formula 1 car hasn't been there..
In 2011, one week before the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, Jenson Button and Supercars god Craig Lowndes would lap the mountain in what was an incredible sight and one we will always remember. Jenson managed a 1:48.8 which is an unofficial lap record and one that won't be beaten anytime soon..
Enjoy!

    Spa like Monaco gets to ignore the FIA rules about tracks because of their historic status

  • @Apis4

    @Apis4

    2 жыл бұрын

    Parts of the Mountain narrow to Monaco levels, because of the actual angle of attack, the line is way too narrow, even when it looks fairly wide, because there is say, a wall on entry, and then another exit, but you can only see one then the other because of elevation drop, so it essentially means just one narrow line or bounce off. Likewise, parts of the circuit drop far more significantly than Spa, more than OLD SPA even back in the glory days of the full Triangle. The Mountain however, unlike Monaco, is highspeed... even in the aforementioned narrow line sections, and unlike Spa, is not as long in it's elevating sections, on the way up, and down, there's sections which climb steeply, but in very short run. Narrow a run too, actually. It has the problems of both, but with nothing to mitigate the issues. Monaco is narrow, but slow, always has been. Spa rises and falls, but it does so with relatively long run in and out off. Panorama has neither.

    In my opinion it's one of the worst tracks in the Gran Turismo franchise mainly do to the mountain section which has no alternative driving line for overtaking! I think they've designed the downhill section a bit too steep and sharp which means if one car loses control there's a high chance that no one can avoid a crash in this section! Compared to IRL you at least don't have to worry about wild suicidal animals jumping over the track... although some drivers can imitate them very good!

    Having got into V8 Supercars over the course of lockdown here in the UK over the last year or so, I gotta say, I love Aussie Touring Car racing. Mt Panorama is an amazing circuit and I can see why the Bathurst 1000 is the biggest race on the Supercars calendar. My favourite piece of footage from it is the opening lap of the 1998 Bathurst 1000, after finding the full race on KZread. 45 cars roaring up and down the mountain, awesome stuff (that and I love the sound the Supercars make when revving up for the start of a race; 7,500rpm and bouncing off the limiter). I am curious to see how the Gen 3 rules for Supercars turn out next year. On the kangaroos, the ones which interrupted the practice session for the Bathurst 12hr GT race last year made for a hilarious piece of footage, thankfully no person or roo were injured. Would I want to see an F1 race at Bathurst? If it meant that the circuit had to be modified, definitely not. For me, it's a V8 Supercars circuit through and through.

    Much love from America. F1 cars going up, down & round the mountain sounds fun for sure but waaay too many safety concerns, especially thru the chase like you said.. Australia is on my bucket list because of Mt. Panorama. So much racing history has been created on the mountain. Sacred racing grounds. When I visited the high banks of Daytona I took a few minutes & appreciated the history that had been created. I can’t wait to experience the same sensation when I visit Bathurst. There’s no if, it’s just a matter of when. Sorry for the long winded comment but you wanted to know how I felt about Mt. Panorama 😂😆🏎🏎

Maybe we should give them the bird and go back to the Tasman Series of the 70's where some great NZ / Aussie drivers started.

    I've been to Bathurst 5 times, '94, '95, '96, '00 and '01. The first 3 times was with work mates. 2000 and 2001 was with my wife, her first time to see motor racing and first time camping, and boy was it an crash course for her, lol. 2000, we left our booking for the camp site to late to get a paddock spot, so we had to get one at the camp site adjacent to Hell Corner. It was wet that year, so wet I had to grab some bread crates to place upside down just outside the tent under the little awning we had just so we had somewhere dry to put our shoes on. There was water continuously flowing under the floor of the tent, non came in thank goodness. Now this area is just a vacant grassed area, so the sites just have painted lines for the tent area, and a different colour paint for the designated "road" area, well the "road" soon turned to mud, then the mud turn to a trench, it became undrivable, so at least no one could crash into our tent. Worms were crawling out of the ground it was so wet. 2001 was a dry year to the most part but it was cold, for me it wasn't too bad as I grew up in Melbourne then country Victoria, near Maryborough, before moving to the Gold Coast in '88. My wife on the other hand is a born and bred Gold Coaster, and had never seen frost or sleet which we had briefly on race morning, I think there was a little hail at sometime during the day. That year we camped in the paddock, it's better area as it's behind the pit area, it has amenities, like showers and toilets, they come in on specially built semi-trailers, most other camp facilities just have port-a-loos and for showers you would have to travel into Bathurst and either pay at one of the caravan parks or the squash/sports facilities. A lot of the teams from the other race categories camp there and have their cars there too. Other race volunteers like race marshals, emergency volunteers and others who volunteer to help out around the circuit camp there as there are noise curfews, not as much skylarking etc, good for people who don't want to get caught up in the drunken action that happens at night on top of the mountain. Did I mention that I had a photographers media pass for 2000 and '01, now that was awesome. You need to make the trek there once spectators are allowed back. Cheers mate

    Honestly, with enough funding, almost any track could get approval without changing the track itself. Do some landscaping to increase run off, add fencing to keep out the 'roos, add gravel traps to make driver's think twice about bombing it through certain stretches. We see narrow classic tracks being used at Zandvoort and Monza and I'm sure if an F1 car can get up and down it, however steep the grades are won't matter. Haha that's a lot of ifs though... But it's fun to go through a track and do your mental best to make it safer.

    Sorry but I think you are wrong and it's the Second greatest. Im a Aussie and love our Bathurst, but number one in the world is Nürburgring hands down. 6 and a bit klm on a mountain v 22 odd klm on a mountain per lap(full lap in VLN & 24spec 28klm), both public road's but one with have your licence torn up by the time your halfway through a lap and probably gaol time for good measure unless its those couple of weeks year where you watch other people race, while at the other one you keep going and count the smiles per mile in your very own road car doing incredible speeds without the special licence or the million dollar race car ect

    There's a simple, practical reason that an F1 race would never be held there, regardless of the track. When the GP was in Adelaide, there wasn't sufficient hotel/motel accommodation in the whole city. The government set up an Airbnb-like system just for the GP. Adelaide was on the verge of being too small ... and it's 30 times the size of Bathurst.

  • @GTVIRUS
    @GTVIRUS2 жыл бұрын

    Track Designer here, absolutely none of the reddit post complains are valid in any way. The width and elevations are not enforced rules for temporary street circuits, the pitlane is world class and exceeds the F1 requirements. The airport requirement is just BS, gravel traps are now preferred. Even the bumps that causes issue with the Button 08 run are now gone. The track could run F1 right now if the FIA really wanted to. The biggest issue will be spectator safety, and would likely require substantially bigger debris fences to protect spectators. But if the S5000 round does prove a success, I truly believe that with the right funding from the NSW government, it could genuinely happen one day.

    Formula One has never raced at Bathurst but there have been 4 (pre F1) Australian Grand Prix held there. 1938, 1947, 1952 and 1958 (not be confused with the "Melbourne" Grand Prix held at Albert Park the same year). The last one in 1958 which was held on a sealed track we would recognise, was won by Lex Davison in a Ferrari

    But you CAN race F1 at the Hell. They used to actually race F1 at the Nurbergring. Not the F1 circuit of today, but the full 14+km track. They would have no excuse to change it, because they've done it before. So theoretically, at least, it can be done. They've never tried at the Mountain, so it would be much harder to say if it COULD be done.

    A bit of trivia for F1 fans who have not been around all that long. You will find vision of these on YT. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was closed for a AGP promotion in 2010 and Mark Webber got to drive his Williams over and back.I think over 300 million viewed the feat. The beautiful Sea Cliff Bridge in the northern Wollongong suburbs was used for a global advertisment by Shell / Ferrari in 2007. Well worth a look at the documenting of the history of Ferrari.
