Why Financial Independence Is Easier Than Ever Before

Episode #426
The Financial Independence, Retire Early movement (FIRE movement) is changing. More people are investing, making money, and working from anywhere in the world. Investing education and advice has become easier to access, and self-made millionaires have been created through simple frugality and smart spending. Compared to when the FIRE movement was born, now may be one of the best times in recent history to achieve financial independence. But there’s more than one path to choose from.
Happy Financial Independence Day! That’s right; we’re swapping hot dogs for home equity, fireworks for frugality, and a cold one for some cold hard cash because TODAY is a day to celebrate an accomplishment we all hope to achieve! In this special episode, Scott and Mindy fly solo, touching on the history of the FIRE movement, its most prominent figures, and lessons learned on the path to FI.
But that’s not all; tell your overspending Uncle to tune in as Scott and Mindy debate some of the most common complaints about the FIRE movement and prove that anyone, in almost any situation, can live life on their terms. So sit back, grab those chips you saved for tomorrow’s barbeque (no one will notice), and get your FIRE started!

Reached Barista FI a month ago on a 6 figure bicycle based window cleaning business. Listened to years of back episodes over the last 2 years. Absolutely love the content and I religiously spread the wisdom. Looking into buying rental property with our extra funds. Always searching for more wisdom. Thank so so much for the books and podcasts!

My fire is to be able to reduce my 40hr work week to at least 30hr work week. So i get to keep doing the work that i like, but feel i have better life-work balance.

I’m waiting for my acronym, Dad Bod FI to catch on - half way between lean FI and fat FI 😊 That’s where I’m at now.

As soon as my finances allow, I will have a house cleaner and a personal chef 3x a week. My finance journey seems to be moving slow but I'm proud of myself. I finally have a better credit score❤ I love these shows❤

My granddad declared "The day I retire is the day I die". My dad says the same thing, and I am saying this same thing as well. Both of them have PhDs in science/engineering, and I'm working on mine right now. I call this FILE- Financial Independence, Lifelong Employment. Not as catchy as FIRE, but doing fine enough to take care of myself and my future family is just one thing. The real challenge is the freedom to pursue whatever curiosity I might have in the sciences, spend my time doing research with less of a concern around funding.

I’m an immigrant and as far as I know we have been house hacking for a century. My 80 year old aunt has been house hacking for 50 years.

Yeah it is kind of a white person thing to "discover" house "hacking" as if it is some kind of hack and not mere common sense

My FIRE is to drop to 30 hrs or part time and not worry about job loss. I think it will take away my negative feelings about my job because it won't be so important, and I will have more free time to focus on things I enjoy, making me overall happier and more fulfilled.

Yes I've been calling my FI journey Disability FI as there isn't any content on how to FI when you have a disability what that means for accessing benefits or possibly losing benefits with high medical expenses.

Go, Spendy Mindy!! I love it! One of my main motivators for Coast FI is to one day hire a cleaner. For my husband, it's mowing the lawn, lol.

Okay, next year I want merch. Get all the FIRE to get merch. And we get to walk the street with our favorite podcast/KZread/blogger financial people/group and geek out in public. And all the proceeds go to financial education programs. Or a reverse scholarship fund - write an essay and if you win we will pay $500 of your student loans. Haha😂. I am done now. Got carried away.

I don’t think it’s uncommon to go from nothing (meaning negative net worth) to financial independence. Dave Ramsey guided hundreds of thousands of people on that journey, my family included. We used to discuss on a monthly basis who was NOT going to be paid on time. We were financially illiterate, and it’s really hard to “luck up” on wealth when you have no clue even about the basics such as budgeting. We had a military salary, young kids and lots of debt. That didn’t change until we got sick and tired of being sick and tired. That propelled us to seek out what we didn’t know to turn our financial picture around. The message is HOPE and a PLAN. Sure, a great income and outside assistance helps, but plenty of Americans have both but are still upside down financially. Please broaden your message to include folk who don’t have deep pockets. There’s a way forward, even with inflation eroding our purchasing power, for people of low and middle income.

False hope. I was just about to say this. Show me someone making 75K a year that just got debt free and went from zero to a million in 10 years. Not someone making 250k.

I’m 25 just reached a quarter million net worth, 3 rental property’s one personal home. was broke in debt in and out of jail, from 18-20, found fire and bigger pockets in 2020, anybody who wants to make a change, become so educated you can’t just spend all of your money, you can’t not invest. It is the easiest time to get wealthy.
