Why Facebook is More Powerful than Cultures, Markets, AND Governments
If we think about how we designed our modern system of liberal democracy in the U.S. and abroad, we can see that we started with three core components: the state, the market, and culture.
The three components all influence human behavior at scale, ideally in a way that allows us to all coexist in a functional way. When there are groups or organizations or companies that are creating harm in society, we can usually use government mechanisms, market mechanisms, or cultural mechanisms to fix that problem.
But big tech companies and social media have broken that system. They have become more powerful than cultures, markets, AND governments.

Dear Lord, I am 70 years old and recognize that some of us need to move over and escort these minds into the future. The way Daniel’s brain works gives me hope for my granddaughter. Please keep persevering !
I dream of a present world where every student was taught this in detail.

Digital literacy should be a subject taught at all schools - and in businesses as well.
It breaks my heart that kids no longer grow up playing outside and would prefer to build a digital fort than a real one
Excellent appraisal. My saddest take away is that there are so few views, for this video, and so few subscribers to the channel. I suppose that supports the hypothesis, to some extent. Anyway, at least you've gained one more viewer and subscriber, for what that's worth.

Sooo quit believing that crap your spewing and go find power in something else other than yourself.

I agree completely with what's being expressed in this clip about major tech companies, however the oil company analogy doesn't sit right. An oil spill caused by the oil company does not directly cause the foundations of democracy to erode, agreed there. But the asymmetry of power held by a large oil company and its capacity to leverage that power to influence government (with lobbyists etc) and culture (with ads, guerilla marketing, manufacturing of consent etc) gets vastly understated here. Those things DO directly contribute to a decrease in a democracy's capacity to function as a democracy. I would argue that this erosion of democracy by corporate power in the decades before the Internet set the stage for the accelerated decline in these capacities by Facebook, KZread, etc.
@JoshFlorii

Your points are valid, I would slightly disagree with your use of the word "directly". Oil companies having influence on government is less direct control on democracy since it is not direct control over the people, but indirect via government. A minor technicality but hey, we're having the discussion so why not

I think Daniel would say that the major difference is in the exponential tech that these tech platforms have control of. Oil companies aren't running A/B testing, maximizing for emotional reactivity using AI, etc. They pay Facebook to do that for them.

Appreciate your build on this argument, Matt, and how asymmetric corporate power predating modern tech platforms may have created conditions that enabled further power concentration and erosion of democracy

@@CenterforHumaneTechnology Don't forget to care about one thing at least. The ecosystem. On Facebook is an advertisement of a group page of activists who are planting trees around the world. I think the algorithm does something very simple, it connects us with our true peers, people who think and feel alike. At first, the mutual support will manifest as extremism, but if we survive it, eventually over time society shall divide into much smaller identity groups which shall all strive to get their share of economic and political power. Then, rather than being masses manipulated by the same oil company paying politicians on both sides of the map, we may face very complicated, but real and thoughtful negotiations on various and endless topics, ending up with much more control and much more knowledge, about our government, our society and our environments.
Yep. That's a nice observation about social media... That's why I never got a Facebook account.
Hollow states. Networked tribalism. The fight over AI mediation. Sounds like Global Guerrillas Report topics. Nice guys!
The issues predate Facebook as cable TV removed the limit of 3 channels thus enabling bespoke news or opinions as news. Ironically one reason for getting us into this mess is transparency in politics that made it difficult to do political compromises without paying a high price. FB is very late in the game. It is a factor but isn't the only one.

well, might note that the algorithms that my social media history has created brought this into my feed today... that while i agree with the overall theme of concern i would contend that the larger issue is the degree to which we have mostly hidden players, our current donor class elite, which is engaging in machiavellian divide and control to enable/maintain/increase concentrations of wealth and power, that social media has given them a new tool which they can apply this back to the time of or before Plato nefarious campaign of divide and control... that agree that this new tool has new enhanced possibilities which it would serve us well to better understand however i would disagree that the tool itself is the foundational source of the issue, that the concern of the tail/social influence wagging the dog/government is not dependent on any single tool for its dark effects to be expressed/realized...

Yep fully agree. The video tries to place exclusive blame on Social Media (and as such views it as more powerful and responsible than they are) whilst ignoring the underlying motivations of politicians and private enterprise as they increasingly get corrupted by capitalism - or 'increasingly succeed' at being corrupted by capitalism just as we the people have less and less control over our societies.
Where can I watch the full version of these talks between Tristan and Daniel??
I do agree wiyh Daniel . That is rigt I do not trust technology . Not because I think that technology in itself is bad thing but because I know that there are peoiple characterizet by dishonesty . As we all know from our history the medal always has two sides . So it is very important that only reasonable and responsible people take part in managing anything in this world . We all should learn history lessons to avoide future mistakes . That is what I know and what I believe .

To be skeptical of technology is to not understand it. And that's okay. Trust is a process. It's difficult to learn about something you fear. By understanding technology, you will realize it's value as a tool.

What if we switched it off and stopped consuming? What are the longer term impacts of the Metaverse as it attempts to detach society further from natural feedback. I forsee exponential growth in mental health issues the more we detach ourselves from the biosphere. Can this juggernaut be stopped before its too late for humanity? Is the metaverse a step to far?

Excellent question. I too am sick of hearing about "problems", regardless of how elegantly expressed. There are solutions. Humanity must take its power back. We can leverage technology to mine the most valuable resource on the planet - data. By leveraging data we can regain control of our resources, one by one. Ultimately owning the most important resource again, human resources (our time). I love what Daniel has been up to but it gets us no closer to solutions. While he refines the words to describe the problem, we are already working on solutions. I am looking forward to him turning the corner. I look forward to hearing how elegantly he describes the solutions as he watches them unfold. Like a commentator.

Newsflash - The government has always been incoherent. It just wasn't spelled out for you on your social media feed like it is today.
Yikes!!
I think it should be called strip-mining people's minds for "content" (that innoculous, insidious word). They have stumbled onto the worst, and most scalable form of extractive industry ever discovered.
You'd think that there would be some bureaucrats (unelected high-ranking government officials who keep their jobs when the ruling party changes) who would have an interest in this subject, and for patriotic or simply logical reasons, and would be taking this very seriously. And yet I see no evidence of this. Maybe the threat that, "The government is going to take your FB or KZread away." is sufficient to make them paralysed. Maybe most of them are heavily invested in offshore accounts and the status quo, regardless of the outcome. Whatever the case not regulating this existential threat to democracy appears to my eye to be an act of treason. I wonder if a class-action lawsuit might force them to deal with it?
