6 Ways Social Media Hacks Your Brain

Our evolved biology serves us brilliantly in many ways but also includes vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Social media presents a special case of exploitation, using persuasive technology where psychological levers are poked and prodded often without our conscious awareness.
Join Maria Bridge as she discusses 6 of the most prominent examples of how social media uses technology to hack our Brain

I am so thankful you are educating the public about this! It is difficult to put the toothpaste back in the tube after you’ve taken it out, but I believe there are solutions on the horizon. The Social Dilemma helped me to remove myself from social media entirely (except KZread). I lost control of my own ideas and thoughts and found myself stuck for hours in a mental spiral 🌀 of outrage. Now removed, it is difficult to witness the social decay and outrage culture these technologies have brought. Thank you for your dedication and education on this issue!

The simplest ideas make our brain less confused. For example the shorter quote the deeper meaning. As Dr. Joe says "Thought sends the signal out, feeling draws an event back to you." Therefore meditation is such a good tool, you notice feelings. And he says people think it is chemical. It is not chemical but electro-magnetic.

It seems like Twitter is programming or conditioning people for the feeling of missing out, maybe even more than Facebook, because if you would decide to check the Twitter´s interesting topics once a week, the info would be gone, or you have to scroll down and nobody replies to week-old news etc. It would be interesting to measure how much freedom of choice Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok, and youtube give you. For example, it seems the short videos of Tik Tok recommended by youtube, seem like you have no choice of content, you just scroll what is available or maybe you have a choice only by using keywords. On Twitter, you may mute some content you don't like. On youtube, you may block some stuff too by some apps, but it seems youtube gives some freedom of choice.

We should make an onboarding class for kids and teens who (unfortunately) are getting on social for the first time priming them and giving them proper context for the mechanics of the algorithm, likes, and how to not be affected by all those pressures.

We know and we have powerful ways to remedy to all this! The solution is to increase self-awareness / develop metacognition (powerful and natural Human abilities), vibrational awareness, so we know how things affect us on energy level. Then, only then we will have the power to control what controls us now.

Cal Newport said a good idea that If it is a tool, so you should use it as a tool, for your work. Wonder whether it's possible for some people to use it just as a tool and feel about it as a tool emotionally if their friends don´t use it as a tool, but as a stimulus, your friends would have to start to use it more as a tool and not as a distraction.

Thank you for the informative video. I believe what the CHT is doing is very important, and I support your efforts. In that light, I’d like to offer a small constructive criticism: please slow down your speaking and add pauses between your points. I had to pause and rewind the video numerous times because I couldn’t assimilate and digest one point before you were halfway into the next point. I understand that you’re trying to reach an audience that may have an attention deficit, but your points will have so much more impact if we can think about them as we’re listening to them. Thanks again for all you’re doing!

Another problem is that people want to lose themselves in the virtual noisy world. they don't want to listen to neverending conversations on the bus or in restaurants.... about politics and negativity, mostly if your intention is to start the new day positively and disconnect from others...People think that they change politics by talking about it every day. Einstein said he never found new discoveries through rational thinking, but only when he stopped to think rationally...forcefully, or whatever, the idea came to him. On the Facebook group about meditation, some student said that he needs to do his homework outside the house, and go to a classmate's house, because it's too distracting for him to do homework at home, and asked for advice...People don't realize that students need their own space on the internet but also outside of the internet.

I remember when Rogan mentioned "We are in the infancy of the information age". I agree with this. I'd like to work in the field of educating people about how technology is changing our behavior and offsetting natural social and mental balance. I see it in myself in my 40's and would like to educate the youth how technological habits affect their mental health, behaviors and perspectives. I'm just not sure how to start working in this field.

I am just listening repetitively to the video about the casino. Casino´s false wins is an interesting topic. So we should consider which content on social media is a false win, something that you don't need.... and which is an educational or also noneducational but entertaining valuable content.

Didn’t know that the medial PFC handled self-referential encoding which adds more detail to how I grok limbic hijacks. I also like the language of ‘seeking without fulfillment’ or satisfaction too because clarifies the challenges of democratic/cognitive foundation degradation with reduced working memory capacities for seeking and taking opposing perspectives towards achieving synergistic satisfiers and dialectical synthesis. Thanks for these videos! Learned/connected a lot from your extractive tech video as well. Accessibly concise and useful for informing folks about Game B / adjacent communities.

@@CenterforHumaneTechnology All the given information is valuable. If I am to pick the most damaging one, in my opinion, in regard to social media, I would say the part where we as humans tend to compare ourselves to others. Unfortunately, social media has taken that to another level at scale, and not for the good.

  • @alaalfa8839

Maybe if we may remind ourselves with humor ..."Little bit of crazy town today" ....every day actually. Then we would seek it less because we consciously realize it at the moment. If we will tell ourselves with the best interest and effort that.. "It's healthy" or "mostly healthy, because of best intentions" we would not see and realize the blind spots of its reality...positive thoughts make you seek it more. But I don't mean like yelling "wolf" and running away...but just remind the subconscious mind, that I want to use it less.

What could we do? I draw upon the epiphany of human technology and the greatest educational medium; a toddler's movies. As ideal and naïve at first glance, I think each and every small agent of change, whether that is CHT's video, parents encouraging curiosity and critical thinking in their children, or increasing access to introductory psychology courses that brushes on cognitive biases, can plant seeds of hope and tend the soil for guarding ourselves against a famine or existential natural disaster. Maybe then, we could be that one plant that survived Wall-E's dystopian world, the female passenger who was initially hopelessly glued to her motherboard and personalized monitor, but at moment's glitch glanced out the window to truly see the beautiful but hallow outer space with empty promises, or be the lousy captain who guttered up his courage to steer ship to mother earth after tapping into his inert potential sitting under decades of complacency and empty authority

Machine learning learns about human and beat human. Thus, to turn the table around, human needs to learn how machine learns, so we can beat the machine learning. Sadly your video is not in my youtube feed algorithm. The social media changes users from highly aware state of what content they are expose to, and lower down their awareness to a state where they are automated to seek for feeds due to triggered salience network, break their focus, improving feed contents through engagement, dopamine cycle, and constantly promote users seeking for comparison, social identities, fear of missing out. By taking social media leave, shutting down the account, it makes everything in clarity. That, the social media life is fake.

I like your ideas. To the first thought, you said maybe the option is to practice metacognition, observing your own behavior and thoughts...and realize I don't need this topic at this moment, I would rather listen to some inspirational music, or maybe listen to a nice podcast but not click a mouse hundred times and multitasking. I mean when we used to listen to the radio we felt less manipulated, therefore it seems to me listening is ok, it somehow affects positively the brainwaves, or a nice voice has also good effect on brain network and mood, whether we pay attention consciously your not. But I wonder the clicking and multitasking seem to be problems, because it's procrastination, and they are monitoring every click we do. I think that we try to convince our mind that clicking on various channels and topics helps our creative mind, but sometimes it makes us bored because some topics become repetitive or trivial or are interesting only for a short moment.

Dr. Bruce Lipton explains that the subconscious mind is our habit mind, it works like a computer program and it works on 95 percent of the day. Some thoughts are so automatic that you don't observe them. The conscious mind is creative and full of wishes and desires. The conscious mind works on 5 percent of the day. So you use only 5 percent of your wishes and desires, to change your habits. He says that there are 3 kinds of techniques to change habits.

I like your thoughtful comments. Yes another point of why people are so difficult to leave the social media system is that they are using 5% of their conscious fighting the 95% of the subconscious. And in addition as we aged our neurons tends to stay fix to it, thus making people more stubborn to leave those addiction. Such ways are dragging human life quality down. Unless the law department makes useful changes to the social media, or else, this can cause a whole generation stucking into it, more severe than the television era.

What is the opposite of the fear of missing out?.... It should be some positive balanced or neutral feeling because it's the opposite. But how it is called? so I may program it subconsciously in a state of alpha, theta. For example, I don't feel the feeling of missing out on Instagram, because I don't go there often. I like some channels on youtube or Twitter, but it's not good constantly check what's new? Probably spending some time on Twitter is not harmful in the short moment or present moment, or we don't feel its effect in the present moment.... but it's harmful for a long period of time because it is conditioning and Sam Vaknin says conditioning is worse than addiction, or it's harder to deal with it. He says people who are in love with a husband or wife, use Facebook or Twitter less. They don't feel the need to use it as often because love is a natural ultimate addiction. He says the greatest concurrence for Facebook is being in love with your own wife or husband because they need your eyeballs, not you looking at your wife or husband. Maybe it's the same as a love for sports, and hobbies. He said in 2007 studies said that the situation is serious...that they stopped doing the studies because Google is one of the biggest corporations.
