Why Everyone Is Switching Their Smart Home To Shelly For Alexa

Ғылым және технология

A Smart Home that doesn't require a hub, that works with Alexa and Google Home, BUT it works locally without an Internet connection!
This video is sponsored by Shelly, all opinions are my own.
Shelly is the first consumer based Wifi Smart Home product that works locally on your network as well as on the cloud without any firmware changes. Some Sonoff Smart Home products are capable of this, but they are far less consumer friendly, and Shelly has FINALLY bridged the gap between total nerd and average consumer.
These products work with Alexa on your Amazon Echo, and also on Google Home just by installing the Shelly skill in the app, but if you want to control them locally then there is HTTP and MQTT support too right out of the box. Shelly can be flashed with Tasmota and other firware too if you are really paranoid so there is something here for everyone.
There is a Shelly Home assistant integration, a Shelly Smartthings device handler and even unofficial firmware for Apple Homekit. This is the most versatile set of Smart Home products on the market today.
They are brighter than Philips Hue, Dimmer than Philips Hue and Smarter than Philips Hue.

Happy Saturday everyone! Shelly have told me that they have an upcoming Wifi motion sensor with a 5 year battery life! With modern routers now able to handle more Wifi devices I'm wondering if this is a turning point. The advantages of Zigbee (ooh the Zigbee TM) are falling away one at a time: battery life for sensors and local connectivity could soon be moot points. I'm looking forward to reviewing more of Shelly's stuff soon :) Shelly have some awesome bulbs, but my absolute favourite is the giant Shelly Vintage G125. You can buy it, or any of their other bulbs at the following link: shop.shelly.cloud/shelly-vintage-g-wifi-smart-home-automation-1/?paulhibbert

Checkout bigclive on youtube, his review of the Phillips 'dubai' led bulb that lasts 25x longer and uses less power. Sadly only available in Dubai, not saying it reinforces their corporate greed narrative, but why not make it generally available ? 🤔🤦‍♂️ www.mea.lighting.philips.com/consumer/dubai-lamp

A WiFi motion sensor is a great idea. I wonder if there will be a several second delay while the device wakes up and attaches to the WiFi network? That would mean that although the sensor is fine for detecting intrusion the delay would make it less useful for turning the lights on as you enter a room.

Paul, thanks for talking about “dimness” as well as brightness. I recently brought a load of colour GU10s from Lidl following your recent review. Whilst they were easy to pair, control and the brightness and colour saturation was far better than other brands I’ve bought, their “dimness” was a problem. My young daughter likes to have the landing light on so that she’s not scared if she wakes up in the middle of the night. That said, the rest of the family needs to get a good night’s sleep and unfortunately without turning the colour to red I can’t get the Lidl bulbs dim enough. Downside is that the landing now glows “allegedly” like a house of ill repute at night! Just for the record I also have Hombli colour GU10s - difficult to pair, lose pairing frequently and flicker terribly until they’ve warmed up. The Shelly bulbs seem great but you didn’t mention colour saturation at all in the review - also they get a negative point for having the same name as my ex-wife! 😉 .... addendum: also it would be useful to also say whether the bayonet fitting is standard or oversize - I’ve bought a few brands of GU10s that just don’t fit into recessed spotlight holders without standing proud in the ceiling - especially true for fire rated fittings.

Glad you've starting looking at Shelly products. I've been using them for a few years now and they are great. The Shelly 1 switch is great, does not need the cloud (but does work with the cloud), still allows lighting circuits to be switched off your WiFi fails but does need you to know about wiring to install.

Shelly is amazing, i'm using their Shelly 1's, Shelly 2.5's (awesome for Roller Shutters) and Duo bulbs at the moment and I love them. Being an Apple user, the cherry on top is that some fellows have released a homekit native firmware for most of Shelly devices and that makes them perfect. I try to use as less apps and gateways as possible.

I’ve watched several of your videos as I’m trying to find a solution for smart dimming that works for my traditionally decorated house. All my light fittings are bayonet (most bulb manufacturers seem to only do ES) and I have several chandelier style fittings that need clear candle bulbs to look good (all smart candle bulbs are white and have an ugly plastic bit at the bottom) and none of my wall switches have neutral and I’ve only just re-wallpapered so I’m not going to rewire them. This Shelly bulb looked promising but they don’t do a candle shape one, and are only ES. Am I basically stuffed? I can’t be the only person who wants this? Also, in reviews could you mention whether the products are available for bayonet fittings?

The Shelly modules (1pm, dimmer 2 etc) are the greatest smart home products made. I run all my lights on the Shelly dimmer 2. Traditional light switches that work for my gran, and smart controls via Alexa etc AND they don’t turn back on in the night if there’s a power cut. The ultimate.

Hello, Let´s say I have a huge project, a big home, how many shelly devices can I use? I wonder is using shelly does not cause problems with the wifi network. Or, do you recommend having a different network segment for automation?

Looks good, two important questions though, can you join it to your network without the app and can you reset it or change network without the app and having changed your wifi name? All good being able to do mqtt but if you can't join it to your network because their cloud is down.

Well, you'll need the app initially to give the bulb your wifi information, but after that you can access the bulb directly via IP in a browser.

Hey Dude love you work. Your so honest. I would say i am one of them Philips Hue fan boys as you say lol but i do agree with everything you say and i want to slowly move away from them....... couple of questions 1. I want to put a bunch of nice colourful lights in my garden. Of course being on philips hue i looked but they are so expensive and shit.... lol what would you recommend? 2. With all the new smart devices being wifi..... for the very high users of smart home devices... do you think more and more people who may not be network savy running out of IP addresses for the devices. Because most people on there home routers will be running DHCP one they reach the limit of there ip group they may not know and not know how to solve the problem? Hope you hear back soon or see a video or two on these topics..... Regards Brodie

Another great video. Smart bulbs are great if you want multiple colours etc but what's the best way to manage the issue of people turning them off with a dumb wall switch? I was looking at Sonoff Mini R2 smart switches because they are 2 way. Any chance you could do a review of them? Their WiFi or Zigbee so no need to upset anyone - unless you want to 🙂

Been interested in trying out Shelly products for some time now, the Homeassistant integration being a particulary welcome feature. I'm really interested in their power monitoring devices (Shelly EM). Perhaps this is something you could review? Suspect you might need your electrican relative tho.
