I was just in Japan in April. Was so nice getting 1.5x the money I brought. Especially because things are also not marked up like here in America. For example, a small bottle of Jameson whiskey was 1100-1200 yen, which in April at that exchange rate was about $7.33-7.50. Came back home in California and the same bottle was $15. So not only did the exchange rate work in my favor, but their products also didn’t cost as much. Was a great 2 weeks out there man.

That’s what the exchange rate means. You can buy more stuff in Japan than in America. The reason the Whiskey is more expensive in America isn’t corporate greed, it costs more to get it to you in America. Rent for the grocery store and warehouses are more expensive, labor for anyone who has to handle it is more, gas to move it around is more and assuming it’s made in another country to mitigate most of these expenses, it still has to be shipped across an ocean or over a boarder, plus American taxes and tariffs and California has additional taxes on alcohol and tabacco products.

@@goatfood1504 ???? Jameson is American, it def costs less to get it to you in America than Japan. Price is dictated by supply and demand, not COST. It has to do with spending power. Most companies at least those with high margins will fluctate the price to match the country's demand, that's why games on steam have different prices based on Region. Brasil is very poor and can't afford to pay 60 dollars for a triple a game so they charge 15 bucks and therefore it's win win. However there's some caveat, something called arbitrage. Some people will abuse this and buy things in those countries import them in the US for example and charge American prices for that product. So usually electronics does not follow this principle, like iphones will be more or less the same price everywhere. So what about the iphone in Japan, they willl have to raise the price otherwise they could lose a lot of money ( I just checked and they did increase by 25% in 2022 so they may do it again).

@@stt.9433 Jameson is an Irish whiskey, it’s made in Dublin Ireland. Price is a function of supply and demand, but the cost is that dictates whether supply will be generated to meet the demand. If it were profitable to produce and sell whiskey for cheaper someone would do it, but the cost to produce the whiskey means only demand that can pay at a certain price point will be met. There is not a fixed “supply” of Whiskey, it’s a function of market forces interacting. There can be short time where there is a glut or shortage, but market forces this will reach equilibrium assuming relatively stable market conditions. Addressing your point about it being cheaper to service American customers; why? Everything is cheaper in Japan right now (relative to the dollar not Japanese wages), this means Jameson’s Japanese division will have much lower distribution and advertising expenses, which allows them to sell at a lower price point and still remain profitable. Addressing your video game comparison, the cost to produce one unit of a video game in the modern world is Zero, this effectively places the “supply” of the video game entirely in the hands of the producer as each video game is on some level distinct from alternative, which is fundamentally very different than tangible consumables like Whiskey.

  • @goatfood1504

    @goatfood1504

@@stt.9433 Addressing the IPhone comparison, the IPhone is a super high margin item as that company has effectively 100% market share (there are other phones, but there is a built in customer base that will never switch which occupies over 50% of the market), unlike a bottle of Whiskey, this means people buying IPhones would never switch giving Apple the ability to charge whatever it wants. A whisky company cannot do this, if someone could produce and sell Whiskey in the U.S. for cheaper they would do it, there is no (at least legal) agreement to set a price higher to exploit demand.

  • @goatfood1504

@@stt.9433 Also I find the notion that price is completely divorced from cost to be laughable. You are missing the whole point of supply and demand. In the time domain, supply is a function of cost and demand is a function of price, when there is a difference between the cost of goods sold and the price a consumer is willing to pay a transaction will occur when the cost is higher than the price someone is willing to pay there is no possibility for profit and no transactions will occur.

On top of the fact that you get paid poorly thanks to the yen, it just feels so inefficient and a tremendous waste of life and time to commit to such a old fashioned culture. It is genuinely just bad. It doesn't accomplish anything other than sucking up to superiors and MAYBE contribute to increase workplace morale. But you know what would contribute greatly to workplace morale? HUMANE WORK HOURS. I'm just stressed and pissed.

You would think it would be an Indian or Chinese city but it's not. Low birthrates will fix that for Japan. Maybe not good for the overall economy but the quality of life will go up and the wages will go up. Also if we get a robotics revolution thx to ai then the population deficit won't be such a bad thing.

For the 3 months in 2020 I worked in my current position before moving to remote work full time, I talked to my boss about leaving early to beat rush hour traffic, and she was on board. But I ended up feeling guilty leaving when she was still there, even though since I didn't take a lunch (and I'm salaried) I had worked a full 8 hours. So I started timing my morning commute to be in the office before she was, just so I could leave early. If I ran behind and she was already there, I'd end up staying until she left. Of course, no actual additional work got done on the longer day... just literally trying to give the appearance that I was working more

There is a demographic transition happening in basically every country before and after it got industrialized. Before the standard of living is very poor and birthrates are insanely high. After the birthrates drop to a point where there are not enough kids per couple to keep the population curve bell shaped (many young people few old people), not even cylindrical (equal age distribution) and the main factor of this are child mortality rates are low enough for people to only have one kid and also there is no need for kids since if youre old you can (in most developed countries) still live by yourself without needing children to provide for you. Also live expectancy rises during that process so while less children are born the older people also dont die as young anymore and the curve gets inverse bell shaped

Did you put too much on your own plate and didn't admit to it? I don't want them to work a long time; I want them to have good work-life balance, be transparent with their capabilities and timelines, and deliver on their own promises.

And here in India we wan't people to stop having lots of kids ASAP, and the problem here is that the ones who can afford it have fewer kids, its the uneducated populace that has the highest number of kids, without being able to afford that.

Rich of Atrioc an american needs to mention Japan is a safe country. We went for the second time to the US and I found it nessesary to talk to our children what to do if there was a mass shooting. We were at a fine hotel one evening and I was sitting on the balcony enjoying life and then there was shooting in the distance. We love the US, but the gun thing is out of control for a western country.

One thing I am confused about is the idea that people aren’t having kids because they can’t afford them. Global poverty has declined on all levels since the 1890s. People are wealthier now than they have ever been. We have less now than our parents, but our parents had fewer kids than their parents before them despite having more. People aren’t having kids for cultural reasons, not because of money. Not that finances don’t play a large role, of course. You have to make large sacrifices of living locations and lifestyle to have kids right now. But it’s not like people actually cannot afford kids. It’s that people cannot afford kids AND have the lifestyle they want. Which is a cultural shift from where we were 200 years ago where kids and family took priority over money in most peoples lives. Another big factor is birth control, women’s equality, higher expected standard of living and industrialization. Kids are also no longer helpful for industry like they were on a farm. Happy to hear thoughts on this, my opinion hasn’t been fully formed yet so I’m curious to hear what other people think.

Why can’t they match their interest rate to americas to encourage business loans for entrepreneurship while stopping the money being taken out of Japan and into America ??? Seems a simple solution

well, you see, Japan has an insane amount of debt. And if they were to raise their own interest rates, they would drown in the interest payments. And matching interest rates to the Americans would INCREASE the interest rates, the exact opposite you want to encourage loans, no one wants high interest rate loans!!!

You got it backwards, Japans interest rates are much lower than the U.S.’s. Raising interest rates would make business loans much more risky

@@jairad2654 but if the reason people are taking it to america, is because of the difference in interest rates, as stated. matching the interest rate would mean there was no benefit in taking it out??

While it's true that Japan's current demographic problems are going to cause some economic strife, it's not true that the country is doomed because of it. Japan was a great country when it had half the population, and chasing babies/immigrants to keep that GDP numbie going up is an unsustainable infinite growth mindset that is poisoning the minds of governments across the world, not just in Japan. Historically populations have always fluctuated and it was never an issue, it's just that now everyone worships money and can't bear to see a bubble burst.
