Why every social media site is a dumpster fire

Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and KZread exploit our tribalism to keep us watching ads. That makes them a perfect target for trolls, conspiracy theorists, and con artists.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, KZread, and Instagram are built to cater to the base preferences and desires of their users -- figuring out what information people enjoy with and then showing them more of it. That’s a great way to keep people online, but it also makes these platforms prime target for con artists. People are naturally drawn to inflammatory and sensational news stories, regardless of whether or not they're true. So bad actors -- conspiracy theorists, trolls, and fake news writers -- have been tremendously successful in using these platforms to spread false and divisive content that exploit people’s tribal instincts.
In 2016, it was Macedonian teens making thousands of dollars publishing inflammatory fake stories about Hillary Clinton. After the Parkland shooting, it was random KZreadrs going viral by accusing students of being crisis actors. Even the Russian trolls who meddled in the presidential election did so by posting low-quality, highly emotional content to social media -- content they knew would go viral.
The problem with these social media sites isn’t that a few bad apples are ruining the fun. It’s that they’re designed to reward bad apples. And as long as con artists can use these platforms to prey on people’s most base desires, social media sites will continue reflecting the worst of human nature back at us.

Niki Bronson That’s good. It allows for freedom of expression. Would you rather the Internet be like TV news where people like Ed Schultz can be fired simply because it might offend that TV platform’s advertisers? Facebook, Twitter, and KZread should be free online platforms of discussion where anyone can post their views, no matter how extreme, provocative, or hateful. That is what makes the Internet such a beautiful place, and it is corporatist news media outlets like MSNBC, CNN, and Fox, (the Old TV Media) that try to paint this situation as a “dumpster fire”, and claim that anyone with extreme views is “Russian”. No, freedom of speech on the Internet is not what makes social media sites a dumpster fire. Rather, it is these social media sites’ attempts to censor their content and bend over backwards to Old Media corporations and the corporate advertisers behind them that is making the Internet a dumpster fire. Whether you are on the side of the New Media or the Old Media says a lot about whether you value free speech or instead value being “PG” just so you don’t offend corporate advertisers. If corporations had their way, I would only be allowed to write “We all scream for ice cream”, “I love mommy”, and “Unicorns are pretty” in this comment.

These platforms are exposing all sorts of facts about human race. This side too is a part of it, whether we like it or not. In offline cultures, we act in accordance, however a lot of conflict and so called 'oddness' emerges out of a lack of coherence between who we are and how we act. We can use the insights from the above video to learn more about ourselves if we can keep the judgements aside on both, the platform and the audience.

Reality TV is not going back far enough, TV in general, Radio, (I've heard but can't confirm that even the guy who invented the megaphone killed himself because he thought he gave power to Hitler.) The other thing is that we had a really huge increase in population, and people were not properly prepared to handle how the world changed, also those mass of people were given a immense amount of political power. You have see the history of political power in the US going from White land owners, to White males in general, to Black males, to women and everybody else.

Everyone kept complaining how they couldn’t tag me when they posted pics and blah blah blah..and now I feel like I’m the only one that can see how immersed everyone is on their social media profiles. They can’t go 10 minutes without checking their phone. We went scuba diving and they focused more on taking PICTURES than the actual scuba dive!!! Being constantly bombarded with extreme hate videos just made me depressed. How was I supposed to know that the guy who debunks Kickstarter pseudo-science also likes to take the piss on prominent feminist speakers, or the guy who talks about music I like is also a guy who goes guns blazing psycho if you get him on the topic of politics? I don't disagree the algorithms are there to keep you watching and interested without any care for your mental health. But I don't think these "bad actors" are a significant contribution to that, it might just be an easy finger to point. Like the video mentioned, I think we're the actual problem. Social media just as a concept is becoming too much for a lot of people. Just look at how depression has really spiked in internet-comnected countries. Even without these extreme fringe cases, the fact that sites like Facebook are sites where you go to share positive aspects of your life, it is a constant stream of positivity from everyone else around you, making you feel as though you're not nearly as adequate as a human when things might be just average in your life. I think the only real solution nowadays and for the foreseeable future to all this social noise is to turn off all your tracking, use VPNs, and just disconnect yourself frequently. Honestly, I used to feel super jaded in a similar, clouded headspace. But I just quit using Facebook and KZread as often and I immediately started feeling better.

A central reason that banning "bad actors" that wasn't mentioned in the video is basic economics. I'll explain: Right now, were living in a world where people crave content that confirms their beliefs, this is a fact. This means that there is a demand for such content, and where there is demand there is always supply, you can ban all the "bad actors" you want, someone else is just going to take their place the next day. Banning things without addressing the reason those things are in demand will never work, just look at prohibition, the war on drugs and prostitution. What is the solution? Beats me.

This also makes the following (last) statement of the video completely contradictory. These networks can't just decide to change things in order to solve the problem; users addicted to the tribal affiliation they had will just move to a competing social network that does not change. It's as futile as a tobacco company just deciding to lower the nicotine in their products. Only way I can see to fix it is government regulation.

  • @WildWestSamurai

Ben, and that solution itself might ironically make the problem worse. If these trolls and con artists claim they are martyrs being censored for their beliefs, then government regulations on social media ostensibly confirms their claims, especially in the eyes of their followers. It reminds me of the early days of radio when Father Coughlin (anti-Semitic Catholic radio personality who hated Roosevelt and the New Deal, kind of like a precursor to televangelists) and others were spreading a lot of nonsensical propaganda on the airwaves and accusing the government of corruption when it tried regulating radio.

Liked this video. So what you are saying is that, people watching social network sites, like this one (youtube), will choose controversial, "hate" filled, information videos. That they will in turn, pass on these extremist views to others. Finally, they will avoid looking for a variety of balanced, moderate, information that gives views contrary to their own. What percentage of youtube viewers behaving this way?

More than you'd think; less than it seems. I mean, my mom keeps harping on about some "conservative" crime of the week. It's easy to see something insulting and start sharing it and denouncing it, or debunking it. It's easy to come to the defense of something you feel is being given a poor representation. It's hard to ignore it. Sites like these tell you everything is important and the only way "it" (whatever it is) will endis if "you all come together" or some such. To me, it's just the next evolution of the televangelists. "Give me your attention, your devotion, your time, and your sweat. And we will create a miracle for you." The thing is, we can see this happening. Liberals and Conservatives are talking less in the last 5 years than they have in our entire U.S. history. And the moderates are dying out in today's political landscape. Vox's whole video is basically saying that social media is designed to perpetuate a person's radical views. It's not any one person consciously choosing to become more radical, but the longer they spend searching their own beliefs, the less radical those beliefs seem. That's why (for example) watchers of the Humanist Report and other radical liberal groups are going "Of course we want socialism, only an idiot wouldn't want balanced taxes, better healthcare, and a decline of corporate influence!" While people on Fox and other radical conservative groups are going "Of course we fight socialism, only an idiot would want higher taxes, zero choice in healthcare providers, and a decline of paying jobs!" I debate for and against both sides of the extremes. But what's scary is that social media give the option to block people you don't want to talk to. It means we're creating a space (several actually) where no one WANTS to hear the "other side's" perspective on what goes on in the country. Dems and Reps alike all come to believe that they don't have to listen when someone else talks. And that is dangerous. The internet, a tool that has allowed unrivaled potential for education and personal growth, is now being used to allow the ignorant to avoid education and stunt their own personal growth.

Liberals want to restrict the content cause of a conspiracy that lost them the election. And now they want to find a blame for it. It’s like the Chicago Cubs blaming Bartman (foul ball) for costing them the World Series in 2003.

Europe, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and all of the Western Civilization (except US) considers the Republican partie's ideas to be far-right, populist and nationalist and the Democrat's ideas to be quite moderate, and in a lot of countries actually center-right, not even center-left. So, in my opinion, it's hard to be biased, especially when in our times the right-wing is doing the most demage.
