Why "Emotions" by Mariah Carey Is One Of The Hardest Songs To Sing EVER!

Also Mariah has sung this so many times on tour and on tv, so major props and respect to her!
Non-stop phrased upper belts, riffs and runs, low notes and of course ... these WHISTLES!
This song is truly a killer!
I hope you'll enjoy the video! Thank you for watching!

The difference between Mariah and her imitators is that when she first began singing the song those belts were RESONANT and supported. Too many of these new girls just show up yelling and think they're the next Mariah because they put all the effort into pitchy whistles and nothing into dynamics, stamina, vocal transitions, agility, etc. No one else has ever come close and even the next closest is not in the same league when it comes to technique.

Agree. I usually dislike belting and whistles bcs of this. Don't hate me but, I cannot stand most of Rihannas music bcs of that. She screams and it sounds painful to me. I feel like lately music with lower registers is almost non existent, for men and women. The ability to sing higher notes is held sacred. So everyone, from untrained to professionals does it. Big issue when it comes to untrained people. You can seriously injure yourself if you don't know what you're doing. I recently discovered that a lot of people think the pressure, tension and ache in singing is what it's supposed to feel like. Higher and louder doesn't always equal better. I've recently become obsessed with male opera vocals bcs it has body. That's what's been missing in music for a long ass time, not just in this century too.

I love Mariah but as a vocal instructor who has studied the voice for 25 years, I don’t think it’s reasonable for someone without nodules and the ability to “sing around” them as she has- to attempt singing her songs as is. Mariah herself has said in interviews that the nodules not only aid in her whistle register, but also her lower register as well. Let me repeat: I love Mariah, but what you’re hearing is voice damage and an incredibly creative and talented artist who used their damage as their strength. If you don’t have that ability you are so likely to be injured and I don’t want to see any singer go through that. You can find your own strength in your own voice and improving your own stamina and range that’s achievable by YOUR body and voice. I care about people’s voices as an instructor, and I hope singers will study with a good voice teacher before attempting this kind of singing. Estill voice method is the most therapeutic modality and recommended by vocal pathologists. Also young people need to be cautious trying to whistle- usually it’s safer to attempt after puberty. Focus on head voice first. You can always add whistle later.

de n huh? I’m not really a big fan of Christina Aguilera sorry. Maybe when she first came out but I don’t enjoy shouting. I wasn’t criticizing Mariah so you don’t need to attack... I’m warning people as a voice instructor that without nodules it is a different process to sing whistle etc. and not to compare a voice without nodules to one with them. Also do you really think I would even say anything if I didn’t have the education to back it up? I understand maybe some people come on the internet and talk like they know stuff but I don’t. I try not to speak on it unless I know what I’m saying, and if you read my initial comment I even specify that I love Mariah, and she’s a creative talented artist. She writes her own songs and that’s honestly something most people also don’t even know so I respect her, but I’m talking to young vocal students who might get injured trying to copy her. I’m not sure why that got misunderstood.

The reason why Mariah's singing isn't shouty (meaning she can sing higher without getting louder) is that her nodules are the ones vibrating making the sounds, not totally her vocal chords. trying to recreate that sound is impossible if to do healthily

Yes and the funny part is that she lips her WHISTLE notes too...because being able to do literally ANYTHING when she was younger deteriorated her CHEST VOICE mainly and her whistles were the ONE thing she could actually still rely on hahah. But ig shes a perfectionist and shes really been given hell from the media for just A FEW fails...even tho she proved herself always as STILL BEING ABLE TO SING...so ig the lack of confidence and nervousness also causes her to lip, cuz its the safer side

I think Mariah, Whitney, Celiné, Aretha, Patti and Chaka are/were those few singing legends who should be granted the passes for not being able to sing as exceptionally great in their later years in comparison to when they were at their vocal prime. They gave us untouchable vocal greatness and became the staples for the singing girlies/boys to follow for generations. I personally won't mind if they sound like crap in their later years as this was inevitable. They did their thang when they were at their peak and should be accordingly given their flowers for that ❤.

When people talk about the most difficult songs to sing, Emotions by Mariah Carey always comes out as the answer to the discussion. I just saw the vocal range ranking of singers and found that most of the singers at the top of the list were trying to sing Emotions to prove their vocal prowess. Disregarding all the allegations of autotune, lazy diction, etc., I must say Ariana definitely made a good modern version suited to the pop standards of the modern generation. Live I would say Morisette did a decent job.

It's such a tired conversation that doesn't need to happen. Mariah DID this. Mariah WROTE this song. She put it together and arranged the lyrics. She SANG it. This isn't pitch-edited because that wasn't a thing. Mariah RECORDED this song and she SANG it live time after time in ways that sounded amazing and were all unreplicable. Nothing else matters.

This might be very unpopular (and people will probably lynch me for this) BUT... I've never found this song to be extremely demanding if it's not for the whistle parts, at least not more demanding that a lot of Mariah Carey's songs (if we are going to replicate the studio version without changing it). I'm not going to disprove anything that is explained in this video at all, what I'm going to say is that this song doesn't require anything more than a great stamina, a consistent technique, a decent agility and a sort of range, all things that are always necessary when it comes to replicate at least the half of her discography: "If It's Over", "Anytime You Need a Friend", "Outside", "Can't Take That Away", "Yours", "My Saving Grace", "Subtle Invitation", "Circles", "Fly Like a Bird" and "Heavenly" are for example just some of her songs that display a lot of range and especially demand a very solid technique to be well executed and most of them don't even have a whistle part (and these are the ones that comes to my mind at the moment but we all know that there are so many other songs that can be mentioned). Don't get me wrong, this song is truly demanding but the killer part of this song are the whistles because it's probably the song that incorporates them more than any of her songs and if they would be replaced with another register it wouldn't give the same artistic impact and the same musical vibe that Mariah gave to this song. Let's be honest... Take it as an opinion if you don't agree with me but I think this is the true. Great job as always by the way! ;)

No no i completely agree. But I think that's the essence of the song; it contains literally EVERYTHING. So even if you can fulfill all the requirements of the song, you probably wouldn't be able to meet with at least one. Morisette did dodge a few notes and didn't have very very good control on her whistles. Ariana had lazy enunciation so phrasing did not come in her way, otherwise the song may not have been so easily executed. etc. etc. And even the fact that this song needs u to have an extensive range, a remarkable technique and an overall essence are a LOTTT to ask from a singer, especially when the song is so upbeat and fluid with its melody.

@Aaro Tähtivuori Ariana is one of the best young vocalists of this generation and people have to deal with that. Her agility has gotten so much better too overtime. I love that she's been making smarter mixing choices. Dangerous Woman would be easy for me if I sang it in a lower key. Just the way she phrases so many G5s in that song would blow my voice out. My voice used to be much higher in my early 20s. My voice gotten thicker so that's why I rarely sing her songs because I do sing songs by women in the original key except for a few. My voice pretty much stays in the mezzo range. My voice is built much like a mezzo although I'm a high tenor. Ari has so much high belts, especially in songs like Problem. I wouldn't be able to keep up unless I sing it in a lower key or sing in the original key an octave lower.

Starting the song with belting chorus, half of the first verse already has belts, the pre-chorus is also belting, the second verse opened with belting, ending the bridge with belting, the alternative outro is belting. So Mariah decided to write a song heavy on the belting and we're not talking about the whistles yet, this song is mostly belting and runs/riffs, extreme highs and lows.
