Honestly the Gizoid going out of control and GUN overreacting is a much cleaner way to tell the story than juggling all the Biolizard and Black Arms stuff. After 20 years of stapling more details on Shadow's backstory maybe it needs a good spring cleaning.

Whats wrong with the Biolizard? Sure The Black Arms is a bit.. messier considering it being a later addition to the Shadow's lore but it being around doesn't complicate or clutter up anything. It makes sense that Gerald would experiment organic and make prototype for his ultimate lifeform. Its in-line with the general trope of a mutated lab experiment, so it fits well enough.

An incident happened aboard the Ark that made the government view Gerald's experiments as dangerous and feared what they were doing up there and deemed it dangerous. Sonic Battle's journals confirm that it was by part of Emerl's rampage, and Shadow the Hedgehog also told us that the Artificial Chaos also went out of control at some point. SA2 flat out told us that the government raided the Ark with soldiers and imprisoned or killed those involved in project shadow, shutting it down and covering it up . Even without knowing about the Sonic Battle details, the why and how are pretty commonly known facts and clear enough...

@@BladedShard I guess they're asking how G.U.N. found out about the Black Arms dealings to begin with. Yes, seeing Gerald making a deal with an unknown alien lifeform gives GUN a reason to want to shut down the Ark, combined with the fact that the Eclipse Cannon wasn't created until after Gerald's dealings and therefore GUN wouldn't know of its existence until mid-raid, giving them further motivation to shut down everything, but you have to ask, "how did they find out about all that"? The only way they could've known is if that boy, who becomes the GUN commander, got in contact with GUN somehow at the time and told them about it since he was the only other person to have known about Black Doom (as far as we know). Emerl's rampage gives GUN a more open and hostile reason to deem Gerald's work a danger compared to Black Doom. You're not required to fill in as many holes yourself. There's still one nitpicky hole I'm concerned with: the "higher ups". Aren't the "higher ups" Gerald's referring to the Government? The ones on Earth? So if he sent the Gizoid to Earth to buy time for Project Shadow, how did it end up back on the Ark?

Thankfully the story of Emerl doesn't stop in Sonic Battle. In that game, Eggman copied his code to create gizoid replicas called E-121 Phi, and eventually in Sonic Advance 3 he created Gemerl to assist with his eggmobile in boss battles, eventually going berserk and using the emeralds to transform in a dangerous weapon. In the end Gemerl was defeated by both Super Sonic and Eggman, was later reprogrammed by Tails, and formed a link with Cream which is still present in the IDW comics.

I do appreciate this nod towards Sonic Battle. We really don't talk about the smaller Sonic games enough. Shadow and Emerl do have history and for them to add this in Dark Beginnings is a great touch. There might be a small chance Emerl is that third character or who knows, he could be a boss of some kind in the game

Emerl is important to Project Shadow cause I believe that Emerl is the reason why GUN raided the ARK and he caused all that destruction on the ARK

The Ark was originally raided because Prof. Gerald Robotnik was working with the Black Arms. I think Emerl is just getting worked into Shadow's story just to give him an origin story (mind you, Emerl actually did have some lore in the past, but because of legal reasons. Sega had to scrap it.)

Sonic Battle and Emerl are my childhood. To this day it's still my favorite Sonic story and I'll always love the game and come back to it whenever I get the chance to or just to relive the good old memories.

I think us hardcore 2000 fans and lore nerds know but the general casual fandom, and especially newer ones, probably don’t especially considering let’s be honest at one point in time SEGA was damn near allergic to acknowledging anything of the “dark ages” era 😂 which is why I feel they’re revisiting these concepts and story. It’s an overall net positive to kinda rehash or refresh the story and lore imo.

@@HouseHawk62it's not that some people didn't know, I played sonic battle as a kid on my GBA(one of my favorite games of all time btw sega needs to remake it) and people started to think it wasn't canon or a some sort of weird spinoff game since Emerl was barely mentioned if at all ever in any future sonic games but now that sega is telling people that they do remember I realllly want them to make Sonic chronicles a sequel or at least place it somewhere in the timeline, fuck Ken penders.

The opening intro to the video was amazing! I honestly think that Emerl should be the fourth playable character because he does tie to Shadows past. I definitely think that Emerl is going to be an interesting character in Sonic X Shadow Gens Dark Beginnings.

Me, only mildly interested in sonic X shadow generations: *sees this video WAIT HE IS IN WHAT? now im VEEEERY interested

Emerl returned in Sonic Advanced 3 as G-emerl and has been with Cream ever since as revealed in both Archie Sonic comics and IDW Sonic comics.

I'm that weirdo whose favorite Sonic game is Sonic Battle and just them acknowledging Emerl at all is the biggest W this series has given me in 20 years. I doubt he's gonna be the secret 4th playable character, but I'm hoping for a boss fight in Shadow's campaign so my boy can finally get a 3D model.

Emerl and the Gizoids were created by the technologically advanced Nocturnus Clan of Echidnas, at least according to Sonic Chronicles. Emerl was even good friends with one named Nestor the Wise. Emerl causing havoc on the ARK is likely what caused the raid as well. Additionally, after being destroyed, he was rebuilt as Gemerl. Also, if anything, I would expect GEMERL to be playable. Perhaps he will recover his own memories as Emerl and his past with his creators. I'd love to see Shadow and Gemerl talk about their past, Gerald, have Gemerl apologize for the raid, relate over being created as 'ultimate life-forms', etc.

I love how sega always tries to have a comeback by adding new things to the characters backstory just like they did with the ancient civilization in sonic fronteirs

This truly was a surprising reveal and one that even I never expected to see. Makes me think that we may get this fight in the actual game itself. So Sonic Battle content in this game would be a surprise to see.

I came from sonic movie 1 and gained intrest in it back in 2020 and then i spent 4 years kearning the lore of sonic learning characters playing all the games reading comics and watching all thd sonic tv shows and honestly emerl coming back from sonic battle was cool

I'm ganna be real here, I was shocked to see Emerl again I thought we'ed never see him again. I'm very hopeful for this games story, and game play but mostly story

The fact that emerl is in it is kinda cool

Oh man the memories, I have so many fond memories of the GBA games, but of especially Sonic Battle since the hours you could put into that one were endless, as you could customize Emerl exactly how you wanted, but I usually gave him Mega Man like colors and my favorite special attack was the Tails beam, since it kind of looked like Emerl had a working Mega Buster. If there's a Sonic game that I wish SEGA remade it would definitely have to be Sonic Battle, and I'm surprised that they haven't done so, considering how many Smash clones are out there, but Sonic Battle even though it was a party fighting game it had its own feel and identity, so I think it would be pretty fantastic to see it with modern graphics and stuff, considering that the battle areas and stuff already had a pseudo 3D kind of feel, they wouldn't need to make the game that different, like how Kingdom Hearts remade Chain of Memories but it just felt too different on the home consoles.

Even the baldy mcnosehair type writing is old at this point

I think in the animation, Shadow and the Gizoid are there at the same time because of Time Eater Shinanigans. When Maria touches shadow he experiences that weird glitch in reality, which I am almost taking as, he's the Shadow from our time visiting her, he's aware of her fate, but he also wants to follow her wish to save Gerald.

Emerl is referenced in the DA spin off game Sonic Chronicles The Dark Brotherhood toward the end of the game. The Nocturns (or whatever they’re called) had been sealed in the twilight realm. Where they created gizoids and took over all the alien species there and even have 2 sentient gizoids (who sonic and co. Defeat). It’s strongly suggested that these ancient and exiled echidnas made the gizoids and possibly emerl.

Not me… speculating Emeral if not Omega long before the trailer.

Don't know if it was natural for me to call out Emerl before the announcement because of me having good memory for every each game that I've played... Emerl had a really developed story and used even in Sonic X so, kind of a good opportunity to use characters like those in another type of Generations that didn't appear originally in the first one

Bit strange but first time I knew about Emerl was Sonic X.

I remember playing sonic battle as a kid and always thinking to use the best emerl build. Then as a teen I used an emulator and a cheatcode for it... i forgot that the final battle is AGAINST him, so I suffered as sonic but I made it. It was a canon emerl power level vs a guy who loves adventure.

Silver would be weird to be new playable character but he needed some new changes like how project p does. Emerl would be fitting for playable character since it's been 20 years.

I like that we're getting old characters to come back and serve some purpose than just be lost to time. It also adds a bit more detail into Shadow's back story. It was never really explained what happened at the raid and why Shadow failed. I think adding the Gizoids is a good way to explain why Shadow failed to fend off GUN opposed to just being overrun by the military which Shadow most likely could have handled at that point. And it adds a bit more interest than Shadow just struggling with his powers. I do like that it's a combination of issues with the Biolizard, Gizoid and working with Black Doom to create Shadow that lead to the shut down of the Ark rather than military just being impatient and just deciding to shut it down because of Shadow despite them wanting the production of Shadow.

Emerl is in SxS?! Not only did I not know this, I am flabbergasted to see them acknowledge him and very happy!

If we get Emerl as that fourth character, it'll be safe to say that we'll probably get a gemerl skin for him.

this actually makes sence because we know emrald was something eggmans grandfather Gerald was studying and probably even had some of its data used in his design.

And for newer fans, there's a whole side game, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, where more Gizoids are featured!

We actually KNOW who made the Gizoid. The Gizoid was made by the "Nocturnus" echidna Tribe. It was just discovered, repaired, and reprogrammed by Gerald Robotnik

I first saw Emerl in Sonic X, I even tought he was an original character for that anime. I am still not satisfied on how his story ended.

@@SonicHubYT I didn't see the podcast, but I remember them saying something about some alterations to the story being necessary in order to streamline the universe. So this might be one of the purposes of this game.

"The other ultimate lifeform,"a fitting title. I always thought it was weird Sonic fights Emerl without going super at the end of the game, now I understand why. If Emerl actually copied super sonics abilities, he would've been unmatched.

I actually know this one. I remember reading all the spoilers like 20 years ago when I bumped into Emerl on Sonic X. TL;DR/ he was made by the Nocturnis Enchidna clan (which might be non-cannon now... cause Penders). But, they lost control of him, so they had to seal him away. Which is where Gerald Robotnic found him during an excavation (I believe it was on Angel Island... But, I can check Sonic Wiki to verify). He reprogrammed him to think like Maria so that he could be controlled... But, that programming tends to fail when Emerl gets TOO powerful (think multiple Chaos Emerlds powerful). Which is where the Emerl and Shadow connection exists.. both are Gerald's projects

I played the living daylights out of Sonic Battle back when I was a teen. I absolutely loved it and adored Emerl. It was a shame to see that he was basically just scrapped, making a semi-appearance in Sonic Advance 3 (which while good games, I pretty much consider the Advance games to be inconsequential at best and non-canon at worst because they're more just excuses to make a game) and a more developed appearance in Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood (which... is an awful game, but with a lot of fan service and interesting lore, but ultimately scrapped, discarded, and forgotten about, so I believe it is absolutely non-canon). After that, anything pertaining to Emerl went dormant within the games. I was even convinced that the lore of Sonic Battle didn't mean anything either and like the Advance games, just meant nothing. A non-canon side adventure, nothing more. The announcement of Sonic X Shadow Generations was kind of an "Oh, now we got some Shadow stages. Okay," sort of deal with me. Bringing back Emerl, solidifying him as canon, and no longer a forgotten character has me absolutely HYPED!
