While they may be the most direct villains here, it was the nobles that enabled all of this to happen ... a nobility obsessed with crest, like Sylvains family with Miklan or The prime minister and the other grand nobles who wanted to create a powerful emperor they could pull the strings of .... and the ones who created this twisted society obsessed with crests is the Church ... which is why Edelgard goes after the Church first.

Ower8x That’s not quite true. It’s what Edelgard wants you to believe, sure...but that’s only because she’s ignorant herself. Crests were not even created by the Goddess. They were created by the by the Nabateans along with the hero’s relics by slaying Sothis in her sleep, stealing her blood, and using it as a source of power. The Church of Seiros has done a few questionable things, maybe...but they are not villains. At all. The only “true” villains in the game are the Nabateans (Those who Slither in the dark).

After Lysithea asks Edelgard about her hair, I remembered in the childhood flashbacks in Blue Lions route, Edelgard’s hair was a ash brownish color. Props for minor detail man

AntasmaSonic If I may make your pain even worse, Crests are manifested via bloodlines, but obviously the experimentation didn't stop to just blood tranfusion(?) as Edelgard said "they cut open our flesh". I always have the headcanon that they got whatever the FE equivalent of bone marrow surgery, and most of the failures comes from depletion of white blood cells, so Edelgard sisters probably died suffering from massive infection or leukimic crisis, in most cases their bones might grew distorted too. The white hair was called a success because it indicates that the leukocytes are attacking hair follicles instead of dying(which means they attacks other places too and it would painful as hell). All those changes and stress will probably results in leukimia as they grow older which is the reason of shortened lifespan, and a horrible way to die still. How fun right?

i think this really puts into perspective on why edelgard goes to war instead of using diplomacy. A drawn-out diplomacy would've taken too long and she probably would've died.

She truly wants a better Fódlan but to get that she has to deal with The Church (the literal war) and TWSITD (using their methods as less as possible) simultaneously. But yeah she hasn't got much time so she has to choose drastic measures until she is powerful enough to crush the Agarthans once and for all.

The exact point I’m trying to make. Also take note that Lysithea said that there every move was being watched by the empire. Maybe she meant the people who experimented on her, and thought it was the empire. Makes sense why they keep it a secret for the most part. I’m sure if Edelgard hadn’t have to worry about her shortened lifespan, she would probably have actually talked it out with Claude and Dimitri

To be honest I'm not sure if Dimitri would resort to war. I've only finished Edelgarde's route but before the timeskip Dimitri seemed very honorable and not at all violent, while after the timeskip he seemed more broken than anything else.

I'm guessing that was in his route? I haven't gotten to it yet. I'm Claude's route right now. In Edelgard's route, I personally thought that post timeskip Dimitri came off as being a broken man.

I thought white hair in fire emblem was a normal thing concerning everyone has unnatural hair and eye colors

Think of it as people getting white/gray hair as they grow older. Because of their lifespan getting shorter they are losing their pigment.

Well, Dedue does have white hair, but the skin and eye color cobination edelgard and the other one have make them look just like real world albinos.

You know at first I thought they suffered from albinism (albino) but this is basically the result of human experimentation. Ouch.

Imagine if Edelgard was like "No, I will not start a war for you" and they just did that to her and started the war anyway. If that happened, then nobody would be able to stop Those Who Slither In The Dark after the war (remember that even on Verdant Wind and Silver Snow, this only happens because Hubert tips Byleth off). This question of "lol why did she do this" is so disingenuous, because my god is the answer obvious.

@@mads_in_zero If that's the case, why did she go against them after CF? They should only be stronger in that route, yet she somehow manages to beat them in the epilogue. It also doesn't excuse her lying about the Church or starting a war. If anything, Edelgard being completely under the thumb of TWSITD makes supporting her even worse. There are also many places where she could temporarily flee. TWSITD were unable to assassinate Dimitri and Claude, for instance, and Dimitri would have certainly helped her out (which she would have known if she had just talked to him). It's not like she has anyone they could have used for leverage since her family is dead and she's too aloof to make friends. If TWSITD were able to just nuke things without her help, then why haven't they? Relying on a child who has every reason to hate them is ridiculous if they have the opportunity to just annihilate their opposition. The problem with Edelgard depends on just how free she is. If she is able to act on her own, then she is compliant with countless tragedies just to accomplish her dream (which could be achieved with much less bloodshed by other people). If she is unable to, then supporting her would only help her tormentors. On a side note, the sheer levels of evil of TWSITD really takes a lot of the moral grey out of the game.

@@cordyceps182 If I recall correctly, Edelgard's team up with TWSITD was only her means to an end, which is technically ending the reign of crests, and TWSITD. TWSITD on the other hand, wanted complete control of Fodlan from the inside, instilling fear from inside out, instead of simply "terrorizing" them into submission, which is why they were using Edelgard, or more specifically her empire, as their surface base of operations. For me, it seemed as though they were using each other. Also, TWSITD already had a hand on Faerghus, so I don't think it would be efficient for them to just nuke everyone. Tbh one of the things I didn't like about CF is the ambiguity of the endings, so it wasn't necessarily said that TWSITD were more powerful in CF, I think?

At first I thought Lysethia was Edelgard's little sister. They do have good synergy....

I'm pretty sure you're supposed to realize that they weren't evil - Claude even ends up saying he understands why they were cooperating with the slitherers and laments that Edelgard and Hubert didn't explain the situation before fighting them. I mean he would understand he was clearly using the church though he did not like them . They have *some* objections to each other's methods, but they're not so fundamental that they couldn't have balanced each other out if they had cooperated and they ultimately want the same thing, and know it, too. Rather, the problem is that neither Edelgard nor Claude are very trusting people; Given their backstories (Claude was ostracized all his life for having a foreign parent, with the same happeniing on either side of the border, and even had people trying to assassinate him as a child; Edelgard was kidnapped by her own uncle and saw her father betrayed by his entire cabinet with horrific consequences for herself and her family) it makes sense that they're both very guarded. Then there's Dimitri who goes out of his way to extend peace offers even if it makes taking a risk, but isn't level-headed enough to actually negotiate or understand the other people.

Trí Phạm no it’s in the chapter confrontation at the palace where Edelgard and Lysithea have the unique Dialogue. Not to war at Gronder only Claude and Byleth and Dimitri have unique dialogue with Edelgard in to War at Gronder.

I like to think that F Byleth and Edelgard are a happy duo but since they can't have kids, they adopt Lysithea as their kid and she hates it but secretly loves it.

@@Model_En The church didn't create that, the humans did. The church only gave them crests + hero relics to combat enemies, but when the church wanted to take the hero relics back, the nobility didn't want to give them up.

So if lysinthia has a shorten life span edelgard has a shorten life span too which is why she doesnt surrender in any of her defeats she either achieve her goals or dies trying cause even if she taken prisonor she still going to die

There is a good ending for Lysithea --- as Linhardt will remove her crests if she marrys him. Not sure for rest as its pretty random how you get endings and i havent figured the mehanics how to trigger different ones. Hanneman+Manuela always happens

she also survives if she is paired with male byleth or hanneman, both will find ways to remove at least one of the crest, it is a marriage with byleth and being the apprentice of hanneman. in his case, she continues his research after his death, leading her to be called "the golden child of crestology"

If she pair with byleth​ / hanneman / edelgard​ / claude / sleep boi : she find a cure and live on If she pair with the other then that she will accept the short life she have and use that little time to the best (like open sweet cake shop) But the worst gonna be when she don't​ end up with anyone she just vanish and gone with her family.......

Let me say this to those who are confused: Anybody who goes through what El, El's siblings, Lysithea and Lysithea's siblings went through and survives WILL LOSE ALL PIGMENT IN THEIR HAIR AND HAE A SHORTENED LIFE SPAN El does have two crests, but you only find out if you get her C+ support or face her as an enemy after Part 1 Her crests are the Major Crest of Flames and Minor Crest of Seiros Also, here's why I think the shortened life span is part of the consequence of having two crests: A person's body is made to only be able to sustain AT MOST a major crest of any type (Seiros, Flames, Etc) Thus having two crests puts extreme pressure on the body in order to sustain them and thus makes the person have a shortened life span since the person's body can't keep maintaining the crests for very long. Also, I don't think anybody has talked about this but: I don't think a person would be able to have two major crests. Why? Because the stress on the person's body would be so immense with having to sustain two major crests that the person would likely have so very little time left that it would be like a terminal illness. Even less time than 5 years. I'd say they would have only a year at most. A few months at least (or even less).

"Blood reconstruction" sounds interesting

(spoiler for golden deer route) . . . . . . . If you allow Lysithea to attack Edelgard, Edelgard will straight up be like "yo we the same my guy, we went through the same stuff" •Hint how Edelgard got the crest of flames. Pretty wack the only way to find out in that route was with battle dialogue between 2 people.

SPOILERS And people be here saying it's the Church's (Rhea's) fault for the experiments when it's actually Those Who Slither in the Dark, and the only experiments Rhea did was to make artificial humans like Byleth's mother just so she could see her mom Sothis

And yet church did nothing to find there sworn enemy hide the truth of there existence from the public and did nothing as they infiltrated the empire and experimented on the royal family killing or making most unable to live normal lives having edelgard the sole survivor of these experiments getting the crest of flames now shes an only child the heir to the throne and with the truma she experienced why wouldnt she want to make crest and nobilty worthless and take power away from the church its becuse of the power the church gave it she lost legit her entire family whats she going to do not do anything and be a peaceful ruler like lysinthia she probably has a shorten life span as well so she has no choice but to do her mission AND as byleth i never wanted to become her mothers vessel or rule over fodlan

Yep true that's why I don't get why Edelgard sided with the very people who caused her family's suffering. If her route involves her attacking TWSITD and maybe somehow lead to Rhea coming clean with her actions without so much bloodshed I'd join her. And am I the only one who thinks Hubert works as a double agent for TWSITD and Edelgard. He's too shady to be a retainer.....

Thing is, she does say in game they are next after she will conquer the lands. So...if you chose edelgard path, there are some missing storys after it. Best ending for everyone so far is from Golden Deer as you pretty much go after them.

Blue Lions only paints her out to be a serious villain to begin with and, while not quite retconning it it does push Dimitri into realizing that's not entirely the case but it doesn't go into what could be behind what actually happened, etc but I am satisfied with her going on her own terms, getting Dimitri to kill her, rather than risk breaking his heart any further (given her shortened life span)

I really love the final form actually. It’s such a cool “last ditch effort” “desperation mode” twist and it really solidifies the final battle between Dimitri and Edelgard in BL. She was obviously never going to remain in that form considering it dispersed after you defeat her, but utilizing the true power of her two crests to win the last battle where she knew only her or Dimitri would be left standing was her only option.

Oh dear god. Lysithea is dead before she even reaches 30. Imagine how awful that would be

It's interesting that this is the only support Edelgard has with anyone outside of her own House. It really puts into perspective just what these two are dealing with and what's on the line... I will fully admit I was not a fan of Edelgard at first, but she's really not the ungodly monster a lot of people would have you believe. While I do agree that her solutions were rather extreme and trying to keep a bunch of unruly bandits in line was really not a smart idea, Edelgard is dealing with a very complex and potentially disastrous problem all while under a limited time frame and a very unfortunate set of circumstances. She's effectively under the thumb of TWSITD, her own lifespan could well be very limited like Lysithea's is, Dimitri thinks she's responsible for the deaths of her mother and several other important figures and later develops a mad obsession with killing her, Claude knows too little of any of it and is too unpredictable, and the Church of Seiros is just allowing this whole system revolving around the Crests to stay in place and has done some shady dealings of their own behind the scenes so whether they can be trusted is.. debateable at best (to the point where once Rhea goes off the deep end, even Seteth's faith in her is shaken and should you spare him and Flayn they simply leave Fodlan). If Edelgard made even one bad slip-up, one particularly careless move, or gave TWSITD even one reason to think she could pose a genuine threat should she turn on them, her whole plan would be toast and the result would be far worse than any battle she could have waged. We've seen what happens to people who become annoyances to TWSITD or are no longer of any use to them. She knows it all firsthand, and the people she can really trust or safely confide any of it in are few and far between (neither Dimitri nor Claude would really have any reason to listen to her). Given all of that and time REALLY not being on her side... Diplomacy and peaceful solutions really weren't options for her.

The bad guys hide behind the good guys killing each other... I feel so bad.

I want people to imagine if IS had the guts to actually give Edelgard a flashback with CG scenes like they did with Dimitri and the Tragedy of Duscur. Actually hear the screams of the other Imperial children and Edelgard, the pleas of mercy, the cries of despair, the welcome of death...

I remember looking up a bad guy to find out there true identity. Once I realized who that person was and how they because that way, I happened to see someone recruit Lysithea. I instantly made the connection.

So the Experiments are actually another Grima Project.

Here's an interesting detail I haven't seen many people point out: While the hair in Edelgard's model is purely white, in her portraits it has a green tint to it, which is more noticeable in her post-timeskip look. I imagine it has something to do with her crest of Flame

The way Edelgard says "good girl" makes my brain fall down a staircase and I AM NOT EVEN A GIRL WTF

Her hair might have been purple before, my thought on her purple color veil. She have missed her old hair color.

Lysithea is an Alliance noble. It makes sense her crest would have been her Alliance crest. I have a theory that Lysithea had Lorenz's hair color.

So it is quite possible that Edelgard has a shortened life span too unless having Goddess blood within her changes this?

It sucks that innocents will be killed, but that happens in war. If people have to suffer now for people to live in peace later, then so be it. Pacifists are too blinded by "morals" and "ethics" to understand what actually makes a difference.

Actually I think lysthia has a shortened life span beacuse she was considered a failure while edelgard wasn't so she doesn't have a shortened one I don't know where but somewhere in the game it says she was considered a failure

Edelgard literally tells him, but he does nothing about it, honestly the BL rout seems the most unfinished to me so far, and it didn't help that it was the first one I played so by the end I was "wait! what about the true bad guys? and Rhea? you said we rescued her but what then?! I want to know!". Very unsatisfactory ending.

@@dnlowithstripes Where in the world does Edelgard tell him about TWSITD? All she says is that she weighed the lives of those who would die in the war vs those who would die in the current system. Then they argue about that for like 3 minutes and they leave with random talk about a dagger after that. So she literally tells him nothing. Also TWSITD is pretty SOL after the BL route because all of their commanders and big leaders are dead so they're out of commission for a while.

@@EvilAngel4116 She doesn't tell him specifically who they are but she's "yo, the people responsible for that Duscur debacle are the true bad guys behind everything" or something like that but Dimitri's answer is "I'll kill u". I can't remember exactly when she tells him but I'm sure it happened, otherwise I wouldn't had finished that run thinking about that.

@@dnlowithstripes So she tells him, "hey I didn't do this someone else did and they're the real bad guys". While waging a war against his own country and having helped start a coup that almost got him killed and to his knowledge does get his closet friend killed. After having spent a majority of their school year together secretly planning a war and making an assassination attempt on him. So not only does she not tell him amything besides, because saying I didn't do it at this point isn't believable even if Dimitri was sane, she says it in a context so unbelievable that she may as well have admitted to it. All she had to do is say Thales did it or Arundel did it. All she does is make herself seem more like a liar at the most or at the least she's hiding the truth about the most devastating part of his life.

My three favourite girls are Edelgard, Lysithea and Ingrid

evidence that edelgard is not the villain, but the true heroine of this story, a world with crests and nobility meant that as long as it existed pain and suffering would last for ever, she fixed her world, yes, she had to get her hands dirty but she had no other choice, and if anyone is going to blame her for killing, then blame reah and almost every character in the story, too, edelgard just wants to protect the world she was to.

I got that ending yesterday, and this is truly the best pairing in the game because of content and also regarding good ending. Btw I never considered Edelgard's hair as white. I thought it would have been bleach blonde. So having the knowledge of Edelgard's tragedy puts in a total different spotlight and I could totally understand her target.

Man! What a backstory!

Fire Emblem Heroes' current Forging Bonds had to bring me back here. Always bringing me back to some of the darkest tragedies in that franchise history. The Battle of Belhalla, The Serenes Massacre, the Death of Emmeryn and Mikoto, and now this. God fucking damn it.

As far as I can tell Edelgard's path is the best of the four paths. Sure she's brutal to her enemies, but she's honest, direct and possesses a sense of honor. Not perfect, but in my opinion, the better of the three!

@@rc17g82 She doesn't need a war with the church to stop things like Lysithia from happening. She's emperor now. She can make that illegal. Hell, she doesn't even need to do that, since most of that stuff was done with the Empires blessing. All she has to do is just.... not do that? And if she wants to wage war, she can just go against Those who Slither in the Dark. They were the one's doing that anyway. Take them out and it stops. But that wasn't good enough for her, she wanted to get rid of crests completely, that's why she attacked the church. Nevermind that maybe not everyone wants crests to go away. So she forces everyone to adopt her ideals against their will through violence. She's in the wrong.

Anyone Else noticed how Edelgard and Lysithea’s eyes looked slightly faded?

Now that I think about it a shortened lifespan as a result of some sort of experimentation is kinda reminiscent of attack on titan

I'm more upset at Rhea - Edelgards entire family were essentially her descendants because she gave her ancestors her own Crest in a way that wasn't invasive or murderous, yet she did nothing to help Edelgard while she suffered.

I'm not saying Rhea is a bad person, Edelgard literally started a war to destroy the Crest and nobility system, but Rhea should've kept a closer eye on the imperial royal family if she claimed that she was close enough with Edelgard's ancestor to bless them with her Crest.

The difference is that while Rhea is naive and believes in the heart of the cards, lashing out on others when that is proven wrong, Edelgard is more like Seto Kaiba, out to win it even if it means sacrificing everything, only to find out his world is just a minor part of the game. Most people by the time they finished all the routes find that the entire game only occurs if everyone passes around the idiot ball and lets TWSITD exist. Hell, people are gonna say the same thing as "They didn't do anything to help or they were ignorant to the suffering." The fact is if Team Rocket can survive 20+ years of activity while using giant mechs and yet the police/military can't even find them, is that an issue with the government or the fact that the writers had to do it that way to make conflict? We can safely assume that everyone just assumed that no foul play was being done as no one really bothers to tell anyone anything. Imagine is Rhea learned of this through a kid Edelgard who barged into her bedroom while she was changing with an axe, claiming that they are back and coming after her spine, she would probably freak the fuck out about the kid with the axe, then the fact her enemies are still alive and kicking.

I dunno, human experimentation on kids with involuntary surgery, severe body alterations, and leading to a significantly shortened lifespan (if not immediate death) is pretty fucked up.

Edelgard says not all her siblings died . Some just couldn’t function . That’s what’s so sad . They weren’t all given a death but she has to watch some of her siblings live but not as they were

Basically, it's the stress of having too much power. Adds up.

If you go BE route, she constantly says that she has no choice but to side with them and that’s true. She doesn’t have as much military might compared to the Kingdom and Alliance, and she says that as soon as the Crest hierarchy is gone, she’ll go to war against TWSITD. That’s why we see her working with her uncle and Solon and all them: Without them, they most likely wouldn’t be able to win the war

Ohhhhhh so Lysithea actually has similar back stories to Edelgard...

While a lot of you say that cause Lysithea has short lifespan so does Edelgard, I think that's not the case. Lysithea didn't have any crest, while Edelgard at least yes. That make me think the shock Edelgard had bear is actually minor than Lysithea once.

Edelgard wished to make a world devoid of crests Crest originate from Sothis, and the dubstep tribe wish to erase Sothis from the world for revenge in a war that by all accounts they started. The Empire is but a pawn for that power hungery cult and Edelgard was groomed to be an ideal tool to wipe Sothis'es mark on this work How Ironic She longed for revenge but was playing into the hands of the true perpetrator all along

Or sacrificing a hero's relic for the power to give anyone its respective crest. Not to mention if someone mass produced a single crest it might be stigmatized as a low brow crest.

@@An_Ian The thing is, the Empire is the only faction openly opposing the Church. Three Hopes adds the Federation. Otherwise, there's no way for the player _character_ not the player, to know what you just described. You sound like someone who found the exam answers and are trying to say that you knew the answers all along.

Edelgard was just biding her time during the academy phase. It wasn't until she became emperor did she have the power and resources to wage war on the church and those who holds crests in high esteem. Her methods might be bullish but knowing what I know now, I can understand it.

Huh no wonder why Edelgard said that she and Lysithea were so alike

SPOILERS I think the reason why I loved Golden Deer’s story the best was because not only were the character’s outstanding, but this is the only playthrough where you do something about those who slither in the dark. While I feel like Rhea is partially to blame, those who slither in the dark really did it, and you never do anything about it in Dimitri’s path or either of Edelgard’s paths. But in Claude’s you not only stop Edelgard but you also stop those who slither in the dark, and I find that really cool.

Edelgard's ending explicitly says that she dealt with Arundel and his underlings in the aftermath of the war. I would have loved to have played that instead of just being told about it through narration, though.

And after it’s done TWSITD dominate the epilogue and pretty much all the hinted at fighting post the final mission

@@matthewcrowther890 I just finished Edelgard's route (my very first route) and in the epilogue it is implied they were defeated. One cut at the time, as Hubert would say. Edelgard and Byleth lead a happy life in the world they created (on top of a mountain of corpses, but hey, I will take Edelgard route over the Church any day). Now, I will choose Claude, I wanted to pick him first but I love mages, and Edelgard's team was full of them.
