Why don't you do something?

A common complaint John hears is that meditators, with their 'head in the clouds', are 'no earthly use'. "Why don't you DO something useful" is the challenge. In this conversation John tells of his attempts as a young man to "make the world a better place" and what it came to. For the first time we also invite questions from invited guests addressing 'mind' and 'why does realisation take so long?'

He is the first person that I can really connect with as one of the most profound people since my connection with a woman that walked across the U.S. for 28 some years known as Peace Pilgrim. "Rather than me being the doer of good, it is the spirit doing the good and I am an obstacle of it". This is a very eye-opening perspective of life. Assuming the spirit is 'stillness' and 'presence', I am interpreting Mr. Butler's insight to mean that we can do good simply by 'being' instead of feeling the need to act. This may not apply to every situation but in my experience, asserting a calm demeanor and speaking/acting only when it is requested of me, seems to produce a warmer atmosphere for those persons in my presence.

You all touched upon so many things I can reallly relate to, especially helping yourself before you try to help others. Its interesting to hear other perspectives in the mix, wish I lived close enough to visit with you myself. Maybe one day you could do an online Q & A sometime, seems as if there is still much to learn from you. ☺🙏❤

Dear John. I benefit so much from listening to your commentary. I especially harken to your advice to be wary of conceptual questions whoch obtrude into the world of spaciousness. These searching and seemingly plausible thoughts are so often a block to simple life. Thank you Thank you. Tim from Ireland and friend of Noel.x

Somebody once said that to me.. "You need to take care of yourself and better your own life before you can help others..." I've been doing that ever since. I'm always trying to find ways of self improvement. If something about my personality, or the way I react to something makes me feel "this isn't who I am.." I work out why I'm that way and try to fix it and understand it. It's a journey of enlightenment.

Yes, 'sitting' is the disease of the 21st Century is what I heard, so when I asked my Zen teacher what he was doing, he said: Just Standing. Meditation is doing one thing at a time, that's all. The fall, or the curse upon the fall remains the fundamental problem we've addressed, and we're adapting to billions of cursors online now. Fatherland has been replaced by Motherland, and I support your effort to divine just what it is that Mother expects of us. I wholeheartedly agree to follow along to do what's right, but like you, I don't always know what to do next, so I meditate until the right answer comes, as you do.

John, your meditation is the only best thing to do according to you is because it's not really meditation, as you have answered it yourself, its like a prayer. Basically, you are saying, meditation, which is spending time with your Creator, is the best thing anyone can do, especially those who 'tries to do something'. Therefore, if you want to make a difference, spend time with Jesus/God, and by no planned effort and your soothing voice, thousands ending up trying this life-changing 'no use' meditation. Some get the bonus of eternal life too. You rock 'Treebeard'.
