Why Don’t We Care More About Hawkeye?

Ойын-сауық

The MCU version of Hawkeye never really rose to the same level as the rest of the Avengers did. Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, has been around for over 60 years with some truly amazing comic runs. So why do the creative's at Marvel refuse to treat Hawkeye with the same level of respect as the rest of The Avengers. It wasn't until his Disney+ show that they tried to adapt his best running comic series, but even then, they couldn't get Hawkeye right.

Is he really though? Granted, I haven't seen The Hurt Locker or any of his other films, but based on how he acted in the videos for his own mobile app (not to say anything of the existence of the app and its shameless cash-grab nature) he's just as bland and boring as his Clint Barton.

@@DodaGarcia dk dk, i enjoy his media presence, e.g. him singing on late shows (the new york state of mind bit especially, he just seems so passionate and approachable in the my-drunk-friend-at-karaoke way there). tbf i dont like his own music and surely the app is hilarious memory but other than that from his parts in tag (!!!!) or even mission impossible i always found him to be both a believable agent (competent, fit, cool minded most of the time) and a relatable guy (chill, goofy, middle aged, tired, resting bitch face). the execution of hawkeye's arc in films was bland indeed but imo there IS some general blandness to clint as a character by default, it allows him to be a part of a rigidly hierarchical organisation like shield for many years (which most main marvel characters could never do as they're rebels and loners and all that non-bland jazz) and also be a fellow loser new yorker we love. i can totally see renner in a dumpster with charlie cox and r reynolds, marvel just wouldn't know what to do with it

Honestly, I think Clint might be my favourite of the Avengers. Sure, he never got his own movie and he's constantly overshadowed by his teammates, but there's real value in having a member of a team of superheroes whose just an ordinary guy, albeit very skilled. His more grounded experiences compared to everyone else were often a breath of fresh air, and since he was the only one of them to have a family (that we know of), it made him being in dangerous situations all that more unnerving for us because we know who he might be leaving behind if things went wrong 😟

Hawkeye is very loved because he's so mistreated. Fans want to see him do good, and I credit that to Renner making us love what little he was given. The show had so much potential: to be a low stakes Christmas story, show us who Clint is, give us his origins, and introduce Kate while not taking away from Clint. But the writers were really bent on bringing her in and making her important. Clint serves as a push for her story, not the other way around like in the book it's based on. The simple swap of the big car scene shows it, she's making the shots and he drives. In the book, he solves it and she helps. It's shame, the deleted scenes add so much depth and personality to Clint. You see him as a kid and how his origins are so unique compared to the other heroes.

Gotta be honest, Hawkeye is one of the few MCU characters that retained a good amount of the character he had in the books. He is extremely aware that he isn't the most powerful and he just has to do his best. The Hawkeye show was easily the best of the Disney + shows in my mind. But a wider audience has gotten used to everything being cataclysmic. He isn't going to fight on the moon or make out with his alternate version or something. He's just a guy who's very good at something. It isn't supposed to be bombastic and those stories tend to get overlooked even when they can be some of the best ones.

I actually really enjoyed the Hawkeye series. I liked seeing that aspect of a basic human dealing with the fall out of their super human excursions. The pain, the hearing issues, juggling family with obligation etc. It deepened his character for me and made him instantly one of the most relatable Avengers. I liked how the fact he was a father tied in with him taking Kate Bishop under his wing. It worked much better for me than when they used Tony Stark having a daughter as a way to delay him back to the fight. While we'd had depth to Tony's issues with his father, there'd been little to tie that to him wanting to be a better father himself. For me the costume isn't really here-nor-there, but then while I dabbled a little, I'm not a big fan from the comic days. I do think there is more that could be done with the character, and I'd love to see a Hawkeye movie some day. If set in the past, it could be a good way to bring back Black Widow as well, exploring more of their history as agents as well as Barton himself. Alternatively, if set in present day, you could also get mileage out of doing something between Barton and Yelena as I think his fatherly, protective instincts would come in there as well given the connection with Black Window. Whatever way they do it, I do hope we get more of the character and he's not just immediately replaced by Kate (though I am excited for her story also).

There's a lot a missed potential to make him as great as his comic version, but he has shown to be the best marksman in the MCU, an excellent fighter, caring especially towards his family, Natasha, Wanda and Kate. He's far more useful than people care to admit. He wasn't in Infinity War and the Avengers lost the fight. And he has gotten some character development throughout the films and show. Hawkeye has always been my favorite comic book character. I started collecting comics when West Coast Avengers was first published (so obviously i am some sort of expert. hahaha). In my opinion, the MCU has always gotten Hawkeye wrong. They always portrayed him as a stoic soldier/spy/whatever, but the thing that always made Hawkeye so great in the comics, was his cocky and wisecracking confidence. Also he was a major hot-head for most of his early appearances. This made him was someone to step up and call out the "leaders" on the Avengers...thinking incorrectly... that he should be leading the team. Eventually he learned what true leadership was and was put in charge of the West Coast team (for better or worse). To me *that* should have been his arc. Having a young, wise cracking know it all, eventually learn to be a leader among gods and heros. Also, to see a cocky joking character go to the dark side after the SNAP would have been more shocking. But instead he started out as a stoic soldier, and then when things got bad...he became a murdering stoic soldier. Last thing and i will get off my rant...as much as i have grown to like Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, i don't think he was ever the best choice for the part. My fan casting...stay with me here... would have been Sean William Scott.... yes i said it... Stiffler as Hawkeye. (Only my opinion please be kind youtube hahaha)

For most of the franchise, we were just told to like Hawkeye without actually seeing why. He was essentially an action figure through most of the films. On top of that, they never really found ways to integrate him into a team full of gods & monsters. He's just a dude with a bow who's an easy target for jokes about how he's just a dude with a bow. What little character they gave him was phoned in and his show was too little too late. It has nothing to do with Renner and everything to do the studio not knowing what to do with him.

Hawkeye was an excellent show, and Jeremy and Hailee have excellent chemistry. But before all that, and despite Renee’s displeasure for the mind-control intro he received, making him a remorseless killing machine was a great introduction to his superhuman abilities to stand him up against his future partners, before then giving him a pretty satisfying arc over the next handful of movies and his show. Clint was the one Avenger I absolutely didn’t want anything bad to happen to.

yeah.. the mind-control version really showed what he is actually capable of.. he was an important part of the team.. him calling out patterns and even giving advice to ironman during the fight scene in the first Avengers movie.. he took out Loki's chariot (tricked the trickster god for a sec. there).. in age of Ultron the brief conversation with his wife "..But I see those guys... those gods..." "You don't think they need me." "I think they do, which is a lot scarier."

I first heard of hawkeye in the sega mega drive (genesis), Captain America and the avengers walk along beatemup and partial shooter game which I played back in the nineties. In that game, Captain America's shield acted like a boomerang, Iron man had laser blasts and the highest health, Vision had lasers like Iron man but was a little faster and less well armoured, but could do flying kicks across the screen, and Hawkeye had the lowest health, the weakest weapon, and a slide attack that was supposed to dodge projectiles, but usually just ended up getting him hit a lot. guess which character I played the least :D.

It feels like all of the Hawkeye character development (grieving his family and becoming the Ronin, then later learning to accept Black Widow's death) all happens off-screen. without seeing the moments that make him who he is, how are we supposed to care about him? Also even though he doesn't have powers like most of the others it often looks like he doesn't even need to put effort into what he does, making him look "cool" but making him less relatable

The best parts of the show was from the comic books and the only reason I actually watched this show. It’s a shame that Disney ruined another good character

He never could compete with godlike super powers. So, though excellent at his skillset, he could not help but be relegated to the background among those who did. And then, he was kind of the last survivor standing. Everyone else dead or missing in outer space, other dimensions, etc. it did not help he went legit insane after the snap over the loss of his family. And never really addressed the trauma of that. Even when everyone was restored. And they made him deaf to add insult to injury. And replaced him with a precocious young thang. It’s understandable if the character has lost his mojo at this point.

I think that the MCU screwed itself with Infinity War and Endgame back to back. I think that if the let the five year gap play out in real time they could’ve made movies and shows dealing with the loss of half of all people and focus on lesser known characters with new heroes stepping up to the plate and then after five years they should’ve done Endgame. Now everything is half-assed

  • @LetThatStuffGo

There's always cosplayers of him at Comic Cons. I am grateful Hawkeye got to shine in Endgame and AoU. For more him, all they need to do is focus more in the character than anything else, make a Hawkeye / Ronin movie in the style of John Wick, Ninja Assassin, Logan, and Mission: Impossible. Yes, rated R like Blade. And the budget doesn't need to be huge like the 2016 Deadpool movie. There is so much more to do with the unappreciated Hawkeye character.

  • @accurateoutrage

Hawkeye is my favorite. I love AoU because of Clint. He isn't flashy, he doesn't have superpowers, and yet, he is one of the best heroes because of those things. He is just a regular guy doing his best and will never back down even when the odds are overwhelming.

Lol what?! Speak for yourself because I MASSIVELY care about Hawkeye entirely as I absolutely ADORED him with his Christmas Special show last year. That was INCREDIBLE Christmas special for the character of Hawkeye and Kate Bishop (except for how they handled kingpin, that could have been done ALOT better and differently) working a a great tribute revival interest towards the character, something that you’re not getting here when you made such ridiculous claim statement that “we don’t care about Hawkeye anymore” lol Most other people do. It’s unbelievable how negative this channel has been being lately towards the MCU and other media lately like this. I get the MCU isn’t perfect and has its faults at times but Hawkeye isn’t one of them. This channel, man. Jeez, it’s like their riding the thread of being negative brings in more views just for the sake of it.

I loved Hawkeye in everything but his show. I think Hawkeye would’ve worked better if his series had come before the first avengers movie. But with all the spectacle that literally every other mcu property has had… i couldn’t make it past episode 2 especially because kate bishop seemed to be the primary focus of those first two episodes and based on what I’ve seen in the comments section, he’s essentially used as a prop for kate bishop instead of standing on his own as a character.

In 2023 I'd rather see a Hawkeye flick with Renner than any other Avenger (okay, maybe Hulk, but only in Planet Hulk). He's easily the best actor of the lot, tied with Downey Jr., and seeing a character get by largely on his wits is absorbing, to say the least. I don't need the world to be at stake to enjoy a superhero movie, just intelligence at work, good writing and good acting. Cheers,

I feel like the way Hawkeye has been written in the MCU, stuff happens around him and to him, but he has very little agency and does very little to progress the story himself. The series did a little better job at that, but it seemed largely to elevate Bishop and to give him something of an exit - too little too late

It's okay that we didn't get to see a ton of Hawkeye in the MCU, it's fine that there are Avengers characters that are in the supporting character role. The writers gave Clint some great moments, the Hawkeye TV show was pretty good. The one thing I would change retrospectively is that there should have been a Black Widow movie prior to Infinity War, it should have been a spy-thriller-action flick centred on Black Widow, Hawkeye, and ... I don't know, some other lower tier hero.
