Why Don't Diesels Run Blow Off Valves??
You know that universally recognizable "WOOOOOSH" sound that everybody loves on a turbocharged vehicle? That sound comes from a blow off valve (BOV) or recirculating valve, but why do gasoline engines need them and diesel engines do not?
Today, we are going to talk about why that is!

That compressor map looks like a tropical depression.
I love how every sector of car enthusiast has a different term for things, even regionally.
Great video, wish everyone on youtube was as concise as you without the need of 10+ minute videos
My c15 twin turbo pushes 65psi on a daily and I definitely hear the bark coming off the throttle when I’m pushing a hill and someone cuts me off. In the past I thought about putting a BOV but not sure how it would activate without vacuum.
Hell yeah brother
This is cool . My stage 3 kc300x for my 7.3 starts to light around 3500 Rpms with the 1.0 Ar housing ...and zf6 and after that she is on a mission 😂😂😂
Now I know, thanks!
can you make that sound again?
Toasted two turbo's in less than 18 months. Put a third turbo on with a Turbosmart BOV and I'm now 3 years on with no issues and recently pulled the turbo for inspection and it was as good as new. My BOV setup is extremely loud and it scares the sheet out of anyone that's next to me if I let off with 40lbs of boost. I highly recommend anyone running an aftermarket turbo and significantly increased boost pressure to install a BOV for turbo longevity.

You don't need one if you don't back off the throttle hard or you xan shift into Neutral. That's what a lot of sled pullers have had to learn to do when ending their run. Nothing wrong with BOV though if that's the route you want to take.
my 03 cummins 6 speed manual definetly barks at the 4k rpm range i can here it loud as can be, when im coming up to speed on say a busy highway. Should i ne looking at a valve for it possibly?
My 6.5l diesel Suburban with a spring on the waste gate....it could bark a little.
Because theres no throttle butterfly simply as that
I’d like to buy a BOV for my 2500 Cummins can any one recommend any ?
Do a video on the 6.4 fusion set up . K thanks

Would you recirculate before or after whatever you're using to measure your air?

Its best to re-circulate the air back into the intake, pre-turbo.
@JaegerWrenching

If it's a mass air flow car you want it before the turbo but after the MAF, otherwise it'll read that same air volume twice and create a rich condition. The reason being it read that air sprayed fuel for it because gas cars target specific AFR based on airflow but that air never made its way into the cylinder because it got recirculated elsewhere. You want the MAF to see where the air has gone and by sending it back pre turbo but post maf it slows the maf reading down and thus keeping the AFR accurate. This is the main reason the OE's do recirculating valves instead of atmospheric venting valves. That said if your MAF is located in a boost/charge pipe your only option is to vent it back into the turbo inlet and let the MAF read it twice.
I love the sound of turbo bark!
I thought the wastegate was supposed to let off boost pressure from the turbo whether it’s gas or diesel engine
@robholmes2129
Жыл бұрын
a wastegate controls turbo speed to limit max boost on the exhaust side where as a BOV controls excess boost pressure when you slam the throttle closed to prevent damage to the compressor wheel,it does not do anything while your foot is in the throttle
I’ve yet to see a turbo damaged by bark.
I had a blow off valve on my last compound set up. S468 over an s488. Completely unnecessary but back then no one had done it. Lol

Weird how it works, my ISF2.8TDI required a Blow off after eliminating the EGR from the engine and ECU, the excess pressure is coming thru the blow off.

Can you explain the "peeeew" noises diesels make after letting of the throttle?

i think its because the varialbe turbo veins open up to let the exhaust flow more freely as you dont need the turbo spooled any more, and this changes the flow of the air through the exhaust to a much faster flow and this air going through the dpf or cat makes that sound
i run a BOV on my 6.0 powerstroke and it makes a lot of noise

@peixinho5927

Later 6.0s did not have throttle plates. And it is not actually used as a throttle plate. In other words it does not close when you let of the throttle… because it’s not tied to the throttle. It is only activated to help the egr. So it’s not really a throttle plate
