After 2 decades of having my tools in storage sheds, storage garages, my trunk, and shoved "wherever" in an apartment, I finally got a house. I found that I had so many duplicates of things, it wasn't even funny. For instance, I had 14 tiny spools of Teflon tape for plumbing, and I'd purchased them one at a time. Then there's the 6 soldering irons, 4 boxes of the same screws, computer power cords by the dozen, and so many other things I can't even remember it all. It took almost a year to sort through all the stuff I had, and I got rid of so many individual boxes, it wasn't even funny. I think I reduced the volume of space for my stuff by a third just by combing the same things together. And now I have 30-40 small parts boxes and dozens of clear tubs for larger things. But I think the thing that's been the most satisfying is keeping mayo, peanut butter, cashew, peanut, and trail mix jugs, then screwing the lids to a piece of plywood on the ceiling, and getting all kinds of hardware completely out of the way. I have one set of these under a shelf I put over a workbench for stuff I use regularly. I'm finally at the point where I think I have more storage than hardware, which means it's time to sort through everything again to condense duplicates and split up mixed storage. And I still don't know where all my measuring tapes are. After having 2-3 of them and not knowing where any of them were, I bought 6 of them in one shot, and I still can't find them when I need them.

@@eingamel I've heard rumours that your tape measures ran off with my 10 mallymeter wrenches and were at a chapel in Las Vegas gettin' hitched by a Reverend Elvis impersonator.

One idea my wife gave me. Make an Amazon wish list for tools or components you don’t necessarily need right now but would love to have. That way she and my kids can shop for Christmas and birthday knowing they’re getting something I want or need.

I do this as well. Works great and it gets rid of the "hard to shop for" complaint.

Another source for shop cabinets is retired cabinets from schools. They're often overbuilt, on casters, and have adjustable shelves. I picked up four 4 foot wide, 6 foot tall, rolling cabinets for $250 from a local school that was upgrading. Sometimes they're even given away. My local community College lab got rid of some solid maple workbenches, a bit of sanding to remove all the carved names and scraping to remove the gum stuck to the underside and they're great.

That's a good idea but maaann it would be hard for me to remove all that history of the names carved in the bench. I'd be tempted to just seal it in with some kind of clear coating. The gum can go, however.

I did that very thing. Community college was closing down part of the school and was giving away all the cabinets. I could have filled a large moving truck with it all and made several trips (including some friends) to get stuff. In my garage I have about 15' of enclosed cabinets, plus 4 wall cabinets. In the basement I have two more bases, one with a stack of drawers, then one 12' shelves with top and then the 7' tall hutch with 1" movable, laminated shelves. Everything is this blue marble laminate, but it works for the kids toys, crafts and storage. I'll probably have to sell them with the house because I don't think I could move them again.

I'm glad you mentioned flooring. I learned over the last year that having rubber pads/ padded flooring really REALLY reduced my fatigue and helps reduce pain in my legs and back.

Does unevenly poured concrete with slippers work?

I really appreciate the realism of these suggestions. Too many folks recommend things only people with real shops can do. As someone who works out of a two car garage with two cars parked in it all week these suggestions actually make sense. Only thing I can think of you missed is having air, extension cords, and dust hose spools hanging from the roof. They really improved my workflow

The table saw I bought from a garage sale had a rockler mobile base stand. Worth more than I paid for the whole saw and everything from a garage sale. Have loved having a table saw that I can easily move around my shop

Flooring... When I was a kid I had shoes with sponge soles. Makes me think you could buy a single soft tile and glue pieces on the bottom of your boots. Bonus, floor is still easy to sweep. :)

I’ve done most of these upgrades or am planning to. I agree 100%!! One thing I would add is on my to-do list this year - add additional power circuits to run dust collection and filtration while using the bigger tools/saws.

I've been watching you a long time and I'm glad to know that you solved that rust issue!

The Barrina shop lights are great. I have used them for years and the customer service, at least my experience with them is stellar. I e-mailed a picture of the burned out lights and they sent me a whole box of new lights.

Can't agree with you more how smart it is to have some sort of foam/rubber on the ground. My feet/legs used to ache when I'd do those 4 to 6 hours work in the garage, put foam down and it is crazy how that fixed it. And as you said, drop a drill or something on the foam probably doesn't hurt it at all, drop it on the concrete and you may be buying a new drill. And those multi light LED lights it is crazy how bright they are, I put 5 in my garage and it is like daylight out there, 100x better than the old 4' fluorescent bulbs.

As soon as you mentioned flooring, I was just going to comment about the horse stall mats. Best flooring for garage, shop, workout area, etc

That's whit I use.

If your shop space is where your water heater is (basement or garage), I recommend a heat pump/hybrid water heater as it draws heat & humidity out of the air & no extra dehumidifier needed!

Yes, have this in my new workshop. Benefit is also daily cooling through summer although other wide of it is daily cooling through winter as it heats our water…

For shop storage, you can't go wrong with Harbor Freight. Those Gen 3 US General toolboxes are bulletproof for the money. I've found the Yukon rolling cabinets are cheaper and better quality than most of the big box stuff. I do have a half dozen of the Husky cabinets though. 👍🏼

Good stuff Matt. Yes, this is aimed more at beginners. And........ We all have been beginners. It's good to be reminded of things that we may not have thought of or forgot. I appreciate the effort. Now to get some decent lighting into the pole barn.... LOL! Up here in North Idaho dehumidification isn't needed most of the time. It is dry! Heat during the winter would be nice. I have some ideas on that too. So, thanks again!

I'm also in southern AR and am about to start my woodworking hobby, waiting on a table saw I ordered. I still have lots of upgrades to my building to consider over the next few years but I was considering a dehumidifer as my building's floor sweats and we store holiday decorations and keepsakes there as well that we don't want ruined.

Goodness I can relate to that Humidity. I was raised in Ohio where the summer air hangs like a wet curtain. Living in the Southern Sierra the last 45 years has made me appreciate 20% humidity. I’ve just acquired a GOOD Exhaust fan for the wall next to my Table Saw I was looking and looking at an air filter then realized I can just vent out the wall. The perks of wilderness living I guess. Gotta get that airborne dust out. I’m just a 60 year old Hobbyist. Maybe too old to fool with CNC machines and 3D printers. Although 3D Printers very much appeal to the tinkerer side of me. Good video. I very much enjoy your content. God Bless. You know he does.

I have that same lumber storage system and it's awesome! The very best upgrade ever is one I just made, and that's 1" thick anti fatigue flooring. GAME- CHANGER! My knees, hips and back are so much happier.

I used the rubber mats (5mm) as protective layer on my balcony under the wooden tiles. Turns out it feels like walking on clouds - VERY smooth.

Thanks for the video. I put in a rubber floor recently. I went with interlocking floor tiles from Home Depot. I selected them because they are easier to handle and the seams disappear once they are put together. The price was good also.

Guys the lights are great And I have worked in my shop with poor lighting for years. Wow this will change your shop to the good😊

Awesome video Matt! I recently installed a dust collection and got mine from Harbor Freight. I modified mine by adding a barrel and eliminating the bag and vented it outside where the fine dust is exhausted. I plan to upgrade it by buying the smaller harbor freight and adding it to the opposite end of the end of the system with the exhaust end flowing through toward the main unit. This should help add CFM by drawing more from your open ports you are using. Still cheaper than buying name brand dust collection. Give it a try! Let you know how it works soon!

The room filtration unit's are great. I had a home made one that I built like 20 years ago. Wish I kept it but it was pretty big.

I did 8 LED lights similar to yours. Bought at Harbor Freight on a sale at $12 each. Wow it makes a difference. I live in Texas and its hot and humid. I insulated my garage door also. I definitely need a dehumidifier.

Thanks for promoting mini splits, they make such a difference, the DrCool is a DIY install, and the running cost is lower - plus they'll give you heat and cool!

Those Bora racks are $39 per set, which gives you 6 shelves rated at 100 lb per shelf. I was a little skeptical too but 4800 ratings averaging 4.5 stars and free shipping to your house. 👍🏼 I wouldn't get crazy with them but still seems like a good storage solution.

New subscriber here and I'm loving your content. Two upgrades I've made that have made a huge difference in my shop have to do with my Dewalt DW735 planer. First, I upgraded the cutter head to a Shelix. Big difference in quality but the stock blades seemed like they were made from used paper clips and the carbide cutters in the Shelix are extremely durable. The 2nd upgrade to the planer was to install a 4' quartz planer bed. I had a granite shop cut a 13" x 48" piece of quartz countertop (2cm glued to 3/4" plywood) and installed it over the stock bed and infeed/outfeed tables. It's dead flat and slippery once waxed. It adds length to the planer and reduces planing thickness from 6" to 4 1/2" but it was worth it.

I bought a Bambu X1. I used your link. Hopefully you get something from them, as I probably wouldn't have bought it if you hadn't reviewed it. Thanks as always for the advice and information. Keep up the great work bud.

Hello. I just received two of your Woodworkers Chronicles. they seem very well organized. a little pricy but nice.

I had a Dust Right collector for several years. It worked great with one exception. The chip blower from my Dewalt DW 735 planer blew the chips right through the seal between the lid and the collector can. Virtually all the chips would end up on the floor. It was huge mess. Taping it closed would have been a huge hassle, so I eventually went with the Oneida shop vac extractor which fixed the problem instantly. If you're on a budget or don't have the DW 735, the Dust Right is a great dust collector.

Matt, you absolutely outdid yourself with your "...these 10 Shop Upgrades...?" Video which was exceptionally awesome! Now, I am going to click on the hyperlinks to see which ones that I can afford at this time. Well done, Matt!

When I did my shop I got the 2x2 t x g sub floors they have plastic plates on the back, makes it easy on the feet and makes it warm on the feet in cold climates

Very nice video. My 4 take aways are make everything mobile, horse mats, dehumidifier and mini split. Have a shop vac for dust, and the door insulated. 3d printer in the wood shop was the only thing I kind of cringed over. Not because its a 3d printer ( I have 3 ) but because the dust. X1 Carbon is nice in having a fully enclosed bed and the filament storage is nice on the bench. But I'd rather have the printer in an office inside the house someplace away from all that. Nice vid. Sharing with my homies.

Just about to complete on my first house. Comes with a double, heated, insulated garage (I'm in Canada) so down the rabbit hole i go of shop design. Lighting and flooring have long been first in the list. Hasn't come across these farm mats before. Could be the way to go. Cheers

1:30 @731woodworks I have these and use the bottom section for storing cutoffs. Cut a sheet of plywood to span the distance and smaller cutoffs can be stored horizontal to the wall. Anything that is smaller than the width of the plywood goes to the burn pile.

A Catch cart/basket is a good upgrade too. It gives you a place to put things for your current project so they don't get set everywhere (or lost).

I like the HF small parts organizers... they have individual bins and are -- for the price -- the best around. Just make sure they aren't damaged before you buy them. HF deliver trucks are brutal.

We used the horse mats for our weight room. Great decision. Made a vacuum cyclone out of a metal trash can, MDF and pvc plumbing 90s.

Them Dye-a-blow *whip crack* blades are real nice like

I built a tall thin box with thin dividers that accept saw blades from the top (like a file folder). I spray painted it black except I used an old blade as a template relief for a Diablo red 12” decoration on the front. The blades don’t touch and I just grab the “blade file folder” and swap out blades as required. I don’t know why I love the Dead Pool colors. Also, we had 8ft cardboard tubes packing material left over from a project. I attached them under wood storage and it’s great at keeping long thin items straight and out of the way, like trims and drywall corner beads etc. I also cut some of them down for the shorter scrap pieces. The 4” pvc tubes would be similar.

Being an Arkansawyer down in São Paulo, Brasil, I'm definitely having to make do with what I can get hold of; woodworking is pretty much a lost art down here. Still, I'm working with a lot of your shop ideas.

We use the foam pads for sheet plastic fabrication at work, it's completely necessary to get bubble free glue joints.

In a garage shop.. I had issues with damp/wet under foam / rubber fatigue flooring squares.. Had to resort to buying restaurant quality rubber kitchen mats, they have holes and breathe very well, floors stay dry. just my experience with it. Lowes and Home depot, ect.. they have them and they interlock. 3 ft squares. not cheap, bought a few and went back for few more at a later time.. worth every cent !!

I built a bench based off one of your videos, but used an old tailgate for the back. I miss the building videos 😢

For small parts storage I've been testing or more accurately abusing Walmart hyper tough ones. Got two for $13 and they clip together and you can stack them. Mine have lived in the bed of my truck for almost a year and still holding up and so far water hadn't gotten in them. The upcoming Texas summer will be the final test since heat and sun are plastics worst night mare next to freezing. Most people won't abuse them like I am so they should last years under normal use. Not much from hyper tough worth buying but these seem to be a exception and cheaper than the hart, husky, harbor freight options.

I have a 3d printer that I use a lot. Most recently I made a couple of jigs to put handles on drawers and cupboards because the paper template that came with them was terrible. Currently designing a holder for my picks and files.

I got lucky. A business near my parents had a bunch of the "exercise" pads that link together out. Even has like a office carpet layer on one side. Only issue was the had parts cut out of the edges or in the center, probably for legs of something. Easy to fill in with pieces cut from ones that can't be used. I grabbed nearly all of them. Not sure how well things will roll over them, but I'll put them down anywhere I might be standing for a long time; lathe, work table, drill press, etc.

Those Barrina lights are the bomb! I'm using these in my basement plus I have their grow lights for microgreens. Edit: They have several different versions with different outputs. The 100 watt 15,000 lumen units are freaking sunshine bright so... Unless you want to wear your sunglasses indoors, use some discretion.

Mobile bases can also help with the dust issue. Having a concrete driveway outside my shop, I just roll my planer outside to do any planing. I try to do all my sanding outside. I only have dust collection system set up to my bandsaw. But then, I'm a hobbyist, not a production shop.

#7 is a huge improvement! The horse stall mats make it much more comfortable and easy to move tools. We did the whole floor all st once for the ease of getting tools back where they belong. 12 mats in total. Bonus fact....they make you clean up more since the dust is easier to see on the black mats! Side note in those track saw garage door mounts.. they don't fit the Ridgid track (wider than most).

Do your tools and carts roll well on them? I fear things wont be as stable as they are on concrete and with everything in my "shop" on casters I'm worried it would be a waste.

@@jacobbell5949 Those stall mats are hard rubber. Unless you're pushing something really heavy with really small wheels, I think you'll be fine.

@jacobbell5949 everything rolls just fine and the heaviest tools don't even leave an imprint. They're 3/4" vulcanized rubber. Rated to hold about 200 lbs per square inch. Something like that...really heavy duty at about 90 lbs a piece at 6'x4'. Check them out at Tractor Supply.

I live in Northern Ohio with an uninsulated, unheated garage. Any recommendations on storing paints, glues, etc. over Winter? Currently keep everything inside the house but would like to free up space.

One video you were talking about your shop, i belive. You had a cover that you can put on your work bench? What was that?

All this is on my list. I have a dedicated shop that I just had to buy a 24000 BTU mini-split so my "upgrade" budget is now dependent in cash flow...aka some profit! Lighting, Storage and more robust dust collection on next on the list.

For the floor mats, use Black Gaffers tape for the seams. It works better than duct tape.

I up graded my shop, garage, carport lighting, and Camera System by putting it all on Solar. I even added a separate solar system for my 1HP pool pump. The appliance and tool circuits are still there for the heavy loads. Now all my most used loads cost me nothing to use each month.

@731Woodworks I live in NWA and I will have to agree it is HUMID here. Real humid. I need to get a dehumidifer and some kind of air flow, I have fans but they suck. Also my garage is still used for its original purpose But really i also have to literally rearrange my garage some how, I use a corner for all my woodworking + WFH setup so I need to clean it up and fix it. TBH it works for, but I do need to do it again and clean. up. I have a few resin related tools as well that take up a lot of space so I need some solution for these when not needing. BUT yeah I need to rearrange/clean my garage one of these days lol... again Then again I still gotta finish/start and finish the projects I already have... damn I been lazy lol

HA! You started talking about shop upgrades in the first ten seconds and all I could see were these bright lights on the shelves behind you. I thought you'd gone mental, but when they disappeared, I was kinda disappointed cause I thought they looked cool!

Just as a tip for anyone on a budget, I found using those long LED strips work great for a small shop lighting. They are also very cheap, I got mine from Home Depo for around $20 per 16’ strip, and they take up a very very small amount of electricity since LED lights are naturally power efficient. In addition some of them change color so you can party while you cut wood! Just kidding on that last part. But you could if you wanted.
