Being Canadian, I can tell you that maintaining road with intense winter / spring melts is a nightmare of a job. With the sheer size of Russia and the difficult terrain, building an American like truck and road systems must be next to impossible. The only issue is that they should use civilian trains instead. Armored trains are much more costly to build and crumble easily under attacks from drones, RPGs, etc. It's more about cost versus benefit than trucks versus trains. Also, their winter isn't as intense and potholes aren't the biggest issue when explosions are going off around you. I mean, dirt roads exist.

@@nazzer_xlon "Yeah it’s getting derailed." You're not going to be driving an armored train around at full speed, you're also going to have plenty good enough sensors tracking the rails ahead AND beside it for several hundred meters specifically to detect such attempts. Also, since there's no requirements for speed or perfect economy for such a train, you WILL include "brushes", dunno the correct English word, but it's basically just a relatively simple contraption ahead of the first wheels that sweeps away anything on the tracks before the train can drive over it. There's also the fact that the combination of the much greater weight of the armored train than a regular one and the slower speed, that if there's STILL anything on the tracks, it's going to get squashed before it can affect the train much. So no, it isn't. And BTW FYI, i'm the first person in my family for 4 generations to NOT work on railroads... So, i'm kinda VERY used to railroad stuff.

If you compare a locomotive train engine against something like the T62 battle tank or the BMP, the train is staggeringly simple to maintain and operate. Considering that the majority of the Russian armed forces are actually from rural backgrounds with minimal mechanicsl training, it wouldn't be hard to mass-train people for emergency maintenance or repairs. Its own weird little advantage, I suppose.

I served in Russian military (before the war began) and I can confirm that you are saying is mostly true. It is been a main strategical doctrine in Russian forces that weaponry and vehicles are specifically had been designed from soviet times to modern to be cheap, simple and with decent sturdiness. Russian military equipment usually not really comfortable to use nor it is known for being on a scientifically edge, but it is VERY (and I mean it) easy to maintain in every environment with some wires and basic instruments (I was radio-telegraphic specialists). And it’s cheap too. So yes, it is counter-intuitive advantage of some sort - downshifting arms for the sake of sustainability and simplicity

Considering Russian's logistic trucks have been constantly targetted by partisan ambushes... Bringing armored trains back to service again does make sense. Compared to disabling a truck, neutralising an armored train requires A LOT more firepower than what your typical infiltrator can carry with him. well, as Jack Wade from Goldeneye explains: "[it's that] armored stuff they used to run around the country so we couldn't target them" it would seem logical that they would use trains to transport materials needed to build ballistic or nuclear weaponry, that and a train can go faster, can carry more cargo, and it can be disguised as a civilian vehicle so an enemy will think twice before inflicting civilian casualties.

Yeah, because delivering up to 70 thousand artillery shells on targets in a day says sooo much "nonfuntional logistics"? When USA invaded Iraq, they used 60 thousand artillery shells during the whole campaign. And to do that, they had to spend months building up. Russia fires over 20 thousand per day on a casual basis and far more when required. And while EU and Nato are running out of shells and missiles and literally EVERYTHING? Russia keeps producing magnitudes more than EU and Nato COMBINED. And they are STILL RAMPING UP. And Russia is still not hitting a budget deficit to pay for it. Do you understand that Russia has used more cruise missiles against Ukraine than EU and Nato combined has ever built? Or that Russia has used more SAMs than at minimum twice the numbers that EU and Nato together has ever built? Can you grasp that the reason HIMARS was supposed to be such a wunderwaffen, was because western airdefences CANNOT SHOOT THE ROCKETS DOWN. Meanwhile, Russian airdefences are shooting down 80-100% of them. Not to mention the fact that Nato would have run out of SAMs to shoot them down with in days if they ever tried. Have you checked what actual Russian soldier's supply situation is? They're comfy and wellfed. Ukraine soldiers, are NOT. Not a single Russian unit have run out of supplies since start of conflict. While there's possibly not a single Ukraine brigade left that hasn't run out of something, or outright even EVERYTHING at least once. It's amazing how people seem to know nothing about Russia... It's not even secrets and yet even the very basic knowledge of how Russia inherited and improved the mathematically based approach to war that USSR developed. And the fact that this approach takes into account expected enemy actions to the levels of logistics required. Maybe you should just realise that Piggy doesn't know what he's blabbering about?

Not only is Russia not the only current AT operator they aren't even very modern in comparison to other recent operators. India uses some armored trains following an attack by guerillas in 2010. Apparently Columbia also uses tons of armored cars to protect miners going into FARC held territory. They use 5 very modern GE AC4400CW locomotives and 8 GE B36-7 engines with armor fitting done by ISBI Armoring and Armor International. They came under ambush as recently as 2009. North Korea likely operates armored trains to transport goods and for transporting the Kim family. Sudan prior to their recent civil war, likely used an annual armored train with cavalry escort to transport supplies to it's garrison in South Sudan. specifications per kindle "Armoured Trains: An Illustrated Encyclopedia 1825-2016" by Paul Malmassari

amored trains are still useful for supply, an uptaded armored train would be cool if upgraded with better AA systems, it would be even better if the radar was in the last wagon and was detachable so you can confuse HARM missiles or another radar detection devices, but it needs to be escorted and always behind troops, armored train for attacking usually ends up in disaster if you dont know whats ahead, they also need engineers inside capable of fixing blown up railways so its quite the logistics to use one of them nowadays

It can be practical to avoid some kind of ambush while still in Russia, a commando passing true the frontier may not have enought equipment to blow a track. Or when moving in other countries it protect the load from attacks directed at the train himself, if the enemy doesn't want to blow its how rails and only attack the trains. Or in case air attack miss you are protected from shrapnels. It can also be a huge moral booster, if a soldier come back after days of fighting in terrible conditions seeing a giant and strong looking chunk of steel on rail can give some motivations/patriotism. Or its just a common case of "we have too much money / need a project to lauder governements founds / I saw it in a movie once and it looked cool, lets build it and then we'll figure out how to use it".

I mean, using a Train (especially a captured one) does have it's advantages, assuming that the enemy don't decide to up and obliterate the Rail network then Trains are more fuel efficient and can also be a lot faster than trucks especially for heavy weapon transport, in essence they're a decent option provided they're used far enough back from the front to worry about Artillery and air strikes, in particular they may deter weaker partizan/resistance forces in occupied lands from ambushing logistics

To be honest it's not as stupid as it sounds - trains are absolute backbone of logistics, both for civilian transport and in military. They scale easily, can pull hundreds of tonnes of cargo with just one powerhouse, are much easier to maintain than, say, roads or airfields and are much more resistant to weather conditions - and it's always better to protect this tabor with reinforced locomotives or special wagons. Although Russia is the only country I've heard about that still uses armoured trains, trains themselves are still in heavy use in military today. Good example is Polish Army, investing heavily in railway and cooperating with existing civilian one for their logistics.

What is an Amored Train going to do against blown up railway tracks? Nothing, Thats a big fucking weakness!

You can armor the train all you like, but you can't armor the track. All you have to do is shift over or remove one rail to make an armored train impotent.

luckily for them we don't have some sort of remote-controlled flying technology that gets regularly missed by their anti-air defences and is filled with enough explosives to destroy the rails. oh wait

Armored Trains will always be one of the most pointless machines of war. It's easy to identify a train's location. This means it's easy to stop armor or not. Tracks are kind of vulnerable. Wars have shown this. Once the train is stopped it can be killed at leisure, armored or not. That said, please, be our guest; waste all the time and money on armored trains. We're cheering for you.

@Jakstr1981 they're performance in the Russian civil war and the wars before mass Ariel war says otherwise, look at the effect they had in the Russian civil war where the czechoslovak legion held the transiberian railway at will. Even in 1939 the poles used them to such great effect the Germans literally reintroduced them to service due to the ambush tactics they adopted.

@@loyalpiper Trains, armored or not are easy to predict, easy to locate, and easy to stop. In fact, they don't even have to be attacked directly to be stopped. The tracks are always there waiting to be damaged. Trains aren't known for going off-road. If one is coming, it's easy to avoid. So this means there really isn't an advantage to armoring a train. It'll be stopped and killed just as easily regardless. So this means armored trains are a pretty toy that is more of a waste than a tool.

@Jakstr1981 @Jakstr1981 you realise trains have these things called repair parties? Destroying the tracks doesn't work if they can just repair the tracks and be moving again within an hour,, hence why partisans had to result to blowing up the trains themselves durring ww2 but solutions were constantly being made to counter this. And even if you directly attack it after blowing up the tracks you've still got a heavily armoured fortress you need to destroy in a direct attack. It only becomes obsolete once you have highly developed aircraft with ordinance which is capable of piercing its armour.

I read a book about Armoured trains in Chinas Warlord era, apparently armoured trains suck. All you have to do blow the tracks in front of them and then shell the tracks behind them and they get stuck. You don’t have to engage with its weapons at all. There’s a reason why you don’t see them in war anymore.

when youre worried about civilian saboteurs then armored trains make sense tbh, your average rebel doesn't have access to fighters or guided missiles. And against ambushes with small arms and improvised explosives these trains are a reasonably effective defense.
