    One of my cats bites my hair! It's her way of grooming me. Once she lost her way and went missing during a snowy winter time for months. When we found her back, at first I wasn't a 100% sure it was her, since she wasn't responding to us. But when I lifted her up, she started biting my hair and I knew it was her. She stayed in the kitchen near the central heater and near her food for two weeks straight. Poor thing. Only slowly did she become her old, happy self again. Was a traumatic experience for her, obviously. At this moment she's cuddled up right next to me. How I love her!

    @@toriless LMAO!! 😂 Yep. I was bitten down to the bone one time when one of my cats was ill. That hurt a bit. Key takeaway: Other than getting medical attention (I didn't seek it because, at the time, I was scared that they'd put my cat down for fear of rabies; I'd read about that), soaking the afflicted finger in a glass of heavily salted water 7 days straight (for about 15 minutes at a time) works!! It did for me; but I can't, in good faith, advise going without medical attention. ;) You do you, *Boo* (ironically - also the name of my cat!). 😸💛

    A bite-lick when being petted is: "Hey, hey, too much, whew, okay, feeling a little out of my element, lemme just clean you up so I feel more in control." 3 options as to why in order of most likely cause. 1: Most often over stimulation 2: You're an idiot who taught them that hands and feet are toys and never communicated verbally through yelps of pain what threshold they should have for you. 3: The place where you pet was painful/irritated or the cat if doing so suddenly and with no signs of impending bite, something maybe wrong with them, like being sick or having a mental issue. Cats can also get things like depression, bi-polar, anxiety and other disorders so random acts of aggression are usually an underlying cause of the cat not feeling well.

  • @dunxy

    @dunxy

    @@vixxcelacea2778 Yeah hand play is a BIG cause, people think its great when they are kittens but they don't understand that as they get older and play with their litter mates they bite each other MUCH harder than we would like and often turns into he same with us. I never play with any of my cats with hands (thats what toys are for, even if its only a bit of wool or a stick.) and the only bites i get are from my female when ive patted her tummy that one time too many, my boys lick (girl does too but never love bites) me but doesn't turn to bites, occasionally i get a love bite on the chin or nose but that's normally "why did you stop patting me?" or "you went away for more than a few hours and i miss you!" :) One also has a habit of trying to insert his entire muzzle into my nostrils,that is a bit uncomfortable but i know hes being affectionate and he is a bit "special"! All mine are rescued ferals/strays.Like all pets its sucks that people get cats without knowing how to raise and care for them properly,really makes me very sad.It also creates false (negative) perceptions of what cats should be like because many never get socialized properly(lazy and or backyard breeders...) in the first few crucial weeks, its an awful lot of work (and doesn't always succeed) trying to fully socialize a cat that didn't get handled until it was a month or more old, I have done it but also failed as well. One girl that i did (she was matriarch of stray colony in industrial estate and the mother of my 2 boys,too smart to go into a trap) turned into the sweetest girl who now lives with an old lady and her little dog, spoiled to death and loves her human, took me a good 18 months though but finally got her to get her fixed and became nice.She frustrated me a lot because she used to have kittens in a place i had no clue so could never socialize them properly, finally last ones she had in the factory i was leasing so they all turned out great and all got homes.

    The whole idea of eat you up is called cuteness aggression. Something stimulates us so much we almost feel violent towards it, but we are cognizant enough to not act on it in an instinctual way so we make playful growly noises and say we want to eat something up. I actually met someone who said their dog had this problem. He'd get so happy he'd start getting bitey because he didn't know what else to do with the happy energy. A cat gets something kinda similar, but it's more over stimulation for them. A love bite is them in the nicest way possible in their language that they are over stimulated. Like when being tickled to the point it makes you actually almost feel aggressive or even kinda scared? Cats feel just like that. It's fun at first, then it gets to be too much. A cat bites and licks to get out that physical pent up energy that comes with feeling that way. Licking is also actually a dominance move. The cat that cleans the other cat is often lovingly taking care of them, but it's also a power move. Little in nature is solely for one purpose. Not to say that a lick isn't a sign of affection, but it can also be a bid for trying to have more control. Hence why biting is followed by licking or sometimes vice versa. A bite lick is "Hey, hey, too much, whew, okay, feeling a little out of my element, lemme just clean you up so I feel more in control." Also lots of cats have very very high or very low petting thresholds. It's truly individual.

    My kitty, oh so many years ago, was rescued and had been removed from her litter far too early (not by me, I rescued her after all of that went down). She hadn't been properly socialized at all, and I couldn't have another cat at the time to help her learn good social behavior. She was a chomper. She just didn't seem to know any better and would bite very hard during play time (I used cat toys instead of fingers as toys, like you're supposed to, but she went for fingers and hands anyway). So, one day, I chomped her back on the ear. Not hard mind, I wasn't trying to hurt her, just correct the behavior. I don't think she had played as a kitten much at all, so had never been chomped herself. Behavior: Corrected. She would only bite, after that, if she was upset or if something was actually wrong. Probably wouldn't eork go most cats, but it did for me. She was such a sweetie and snuggle bug. I dearly miss her. We had a great life together.

    I am a new cat parent, never had a pet. I watched hundreds of cat related videos to make sure I take care of my cat right way and also to understand cat's behaviour. My conclusion is: It is impossible to deduce anything from the cat's behaviour. In each and every video that I watched, some one will explain a what a certain cat behaviour means...BUT... they would add a BUT...it may mean something exact opposite. So I have given up...I just want to make sure my cat eats well, sleep well and plays well. I don't break my head over her strange behaviour...will visit a vet if something doesn't seems right.

    An adopted teen cat of mine had stress issues when coming in. He would act very agressively to petting attempts, biting and scratching with all four paws. But for some reason, I decided that he needed to have this outlet, so i would pet with one hand while he tried to shred the other one (it didn't hurt a lot :) ). In a single session of this, he ended up falling asleep on my lap, and overnight became a quiet cat, who was obsessed at being petted. My conclusion, he just needed to vent out some frustration or something, and learned to trust in the one who he knew he couldn't hurt.

    Video kinda dances around the fact that our feline friends can get overstimulated by too much and too vigorous physical contact and respond with a quick chomp of varying intensity...sometimes, if you watch closely enough you can witness that point where whatever individual personality they have is momentarily subsumed by the bite instinct and then watch their awareness return as the instinct subsides..."I'm biting a hand...oh, I'm biting YOUR hand...sorry, let me lick that for you."

    We used to foster cats for the Cat's Protection League and have had perhaps 100 cats over the years and to a greater or lesser extent biting as part of grooming is common. However our current cat is perhaps the most persistent biter we have known. He will frequently come on my work bench or on the arm of my chair. If I stroke or groom him he will eventually bite. If I ignore him he will eventually bite. I can alternate between paying him attention and ignoring him and get bitten both ways. He does not move but stays put. If I move away he will often follow. If the bite really hurts (i.e breaks the skin) I will give a brief hiss which does bring the behaviour to an end. With this cat tail thrashing is a sure precursor to the bite. Purring is no indicator one way or the other.

    Colin Mill seeing as you’ve been with many cats, would you say that playing with your hands or handling them like the people in this video do does more harm than good? Are you not treating them properly when you play with your hands or is there no need to worry?

  • @ColinMill1

    @ColinMill1

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@pokaay3163 Every cat is different so you need to allow for that. As a general rule I would say always wait for the cat to approach you - if it wants your attention it will come. When it comes to you wait for it to rub against you and then offer a hand and wait for the cat to rub against it and then see if it is happy for you to stroke it or fuss it in some way. Some cats like to have, say, their chins scratched but don't like a hand run over them. We have had cats that might occasionally rub against a leg but never wanted to be touched in any way. Others would follow us like a dog and be happy to be picked up and rolled upside-down and cuddled like a baby at almost any time. I know there was a recent paper published suggesting that stroking stresses cats out. I'm sure if a cat is stroked when it doesn't want it then it might well be true. I suspect the experiments were in a laboratory situation that would not be the sort of place where a cat would be relaxed. I can't imagine a cat would stay put and be smoothed down or anything else if it didn't want to be - it would simply move away.

I've seen him do it with the other kitties I have too! He thinks his seniority and being dad to three of my kitties and husband to one, that they're his pride! They've all been fixed along time ago, but I kept three kittens before they were all fixed. Kittens are 6 years old now, Mommycat is seven and the other female I rescued the same year is seven, so I have six! Old Dad, seven year old Mommycat (Artemis), their three offspring, Merck, Molly and Midnight. Then there is Frida, the kitten I rescued when I rescued Mommycat. they were both about the same age, six weeks. It was a scorchingly hot summer that year, and through a couple of girlfriends heard about these kittens that had been kicked out of their houses, with no water or food. We all took a kitten, I did too, but I took two, from two different people who had just kicked the entire litters outside with no sustenance. We went through Cats are People, too to get homes for the remaining kittens. I don't know how people can be soo cruel.

Then I tell her 'No bite', and she looks up out of the corner of her eye as if to say, "Imma do it!" Then I say "No, no biting." And she tries to lean forward slowly and innocently. Then I poke her in the nose and repeat "No biting". Then she looks guilty and tries to pretend that she wasn't going to.

    I don't think cats are capable of guilt, but by poking her nose (gently of course) she is reset in her brain from what she was thinking about. This isn't actually that different from Caesars technique with dogs. You're just kinda shocking them out of their thought train. Works for humans too actually, can help with anxiety in some cases.

    Oh my god what an uninsightful description of the extremely well researched reasons behind why cats can go from purring and being petted to a sudden and unexpected bite, which is what the title of this clip is suggesting it will explain... For those who actually want to know why cats do this here is the reason: Being petted or stroked or even groomed or brushed which most cats do appreciate from their owners they do so becaus it reminds them of being groomed and licked by their mothers. When they are being groomed as kittens by their mothers they purr to show affection and express that they feel secure and safe. In the environment of the mother the kitten is supposed to feel safe and can then relax fully and gain sound sleep which in return helps them to grow. As an adult however cats are meant to be able to live and get by by themselves. They do not usually live in groups unless food supply is scarce and they need each other to survive. Otherwise they are nocturnal hunters. And all nocturnal hunters have to be on guard all the time for potential threats. Therefore adult cats seldom sleeps very deeply. And they can go from full sleep to wide awake in a fraction of a second. This is an inherited survival instinct. Now when we pet our full grown cat it releases relaxing hormones in them, (oxytocin) and when they really like your “grooming” of them they will fully relax and sometimes almost even go to sleep. And then all of a sudden seemingly from out of nowhere suddenly there is a bite and the rush off and then usually stops and looks as if they have no idea what just happened. Just as you unless you know the reason why will be bewildered as to why your little sweetheart suddenly turned on you and bit you... Now the reason for this is completely normal and not a sign of malice in any way! It is simply a inherited protective system that the cats bodies have developed over thousands of years to help them survive in the wild. What happens is this. When you pet the cat. And they begin to relax and the oxytocin is released it also makes the cat vulnerable since they put their guard down. And while this is a reflection of the kittens relationship with its mother it is potentially dangerous for the grown up cat if the guard was dropped at the wrong place or the wrong time. Therefor they have a built in alarm system that kicks in when the brain detects that the relaxation level is getting too high for safety. And then the brain shoots out the signal of danger alert which releases the stress hormone cortisol which alerts the cat and creates this reaction to “free them of the potential danger”. The bite therefore is instinctive and not geared towards the person petting the cat. The ca simply reacts to the alert system in the brain. That is also the reason why most cats look just as surprised as their owners once it is over. Now the cats body language actually gives off some subtle warning signals when this is about to happen. And you can then see it on some cats by how their tail starts to slowly move or that they in different ways sort of shows that they want you to stop. If not picked up by us so we stop, then the bite will suddenly come. So if you look a little and learn how to spot the warning signs this behaviour can be avoided. Important to note is that not all domestic cats show this behaviour. Some can be petted forever and never bite, while others can turn in a second from couch sloth to predator. And this is of course a result of the domestication of the species. If the cats mother is known to do this, her offspring will too. If the mother does not, then it’s likely the offspring won’t either. This suggests that it is partly a genetic and partly learned behaviour. Just as hunting is among cats. Cats who are skilled hunters have usually learned the skill from their mothers while cats who have no idea what to do when seeing a mouse have likely not been taught the necessary skills for it by its mother apart from playing with their litter mates, which does not teach them the kill or eating part necessarily... So this is the true reason behind the sudden shifts from relaxation to full alert with a bite as a twist that all cats used to be able to do because it helped them to survive in the wild.

    After I "adopted" my brother's cat she did just that. At first she laid down on my belly to enjoy some petting and maybe brush-grooming, but after 5-10 minutes she started to "awake" out of her relaxing pseudo-slumber looked around very attentively and seemed(!) to get aggressive towards me. She bit my hand and hopped away hissing. Since then I learned to watch carefully if she shows signs of "hopping away", and when she gets up I stop the grooming and petting. She doesn't bite me anymore, as it seems she learned that I don't want to bother her too long, and biting isn't nice

    Thank you for that explanation. My cat is so very affectionate and so loving with me but does exactly what you have described and leaves me dumbfounded as to why that just happened. She can be rather viscous and uses her claws to hold my hand in place. I tell her to go away once I've freed myself from her grip and remove her away from me. She looks stunned as to what just happened and is back trying to apologize in a few minutes. She is basically an indoor cat and has no other cat contact. She does adore me and vise versa. Her mother in litter was rescue cat. She's 5 now and still needs to be nursed by me and and claw kneading like a kitten. Love her to bits.

    I once pat a beautiful stray cat. And leads to another pat when i met him. That day when i pat him (mostly his head and neck area) suddenly he rubs himself onto me then bit me, and i give a lil distance he still bit me. And weeks after we met again, pat-pat-pat, rubs, bite. Don't know why but he never licks

    This happened a few times when my two were kittens, but they wouldn't dare do it now. I think if you just pull away from the reinforcement petting/play when they bite most cats get the picture pretty fast.

    Cats have communication that includes vocalization, hunting behavior like grab and grip with claws, and bites. They also have mood swings that are less than a second. You can only understand them somewhat, but more if they are in a family setting. Cats with kittens have a tribe language, and they do same things when interacting. They have alarm calls, grooming vocalizations, and play fighting sounds. They also use tails as a communication tools.

    I used to breed and show cats, one of my favorite male kittens would always nip my nose every morning when I picked up to hug him. He never hurt doing that I looked forward to it as his form of showing me affection. If he didn't do it that was generally a cue to me that he didn't feel well. I miss my boy. I miss all of them.

    For pain wouldn’t a loud high pitch noise also be recommended to vocally tell the cat that it hurts? Like a high pitch whine or noise to tell the dog to stop followed by ignoring them?

    that's exactly right! kittens establish boundaries with each other by giving a loud yelp when their playmates get too rough, so if you give a loud "ow!" when they bite you and then refuse to give them any more attention, they'll more easily connect the behavior (biting) to the undesired result (being ignored).

    My beloved cat, Willow, does this often. He'll give me a few licks and a little bite after. With all the playing and bonding we've done over 5 years, I've come to know the difference between play bites and angry biting! It takes time for us to adjust to and understand the difference but it's worth the occasional blood loss 😂 He doesn't bite hard when we play so I just gently move my hand away before we play again. If he's upset, I'll let him calm down. Patience is the key!

    It can be several causes but withdrawing is always the best and only response. Do not moves quickly, it will only make you look like prey to be captured. Negative reinforcement does not work with cats like it does with dogs and humans.
