Why Does God Care About Your Sex Life? - The Becket Cook Show Ep. 48

Support The Becket Cook Show on Patreon!: / thebecketcookshow
In today's episode, Becket explores:
1. God's design for human sexuality
2. The lies of the culture surrounding sex
3. The sufficiency of God's grace and singleness
Starting in the 1960's Becket traces key turning points in the culture that have led us to the sexual confusion in all of its forms today. You may be surprised how powerful the culture is and how it has rapidly turned us from the truth. Films, tv and specific cultural moments all play a part in shaping our collective belief systems whether we know it or not.

ABOUT BECKET:
Becket Cook was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Jesuit College Preparatory
School of Dallas. After graduating from Austin College in Texas, Becket moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of writing and acting, finding success in both. He eventually went on to become a production designer working with the top photographers and directors in the world on fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and for ad campaigns such as Gap, L'Oréal Paris, and Nike.
Finding a new sense of freedom in L.A., Becket also fully engaged in his new life as a gay man. He had a series of many relationships with men throughout the next fifteen years.
In September of 2009, Becket met a stranger at a coffee shop in Silver Lake who invited him to his church in Hollywood called Reality L.A. Becket reluctantly agreed to attend the service. After hearing the sermon that Sunday, Becket was utterly transformed by the gospel and gave his life to Christ. He also knew on that day when God revealed Himself to him that homosexuality was a sin and that he could no longer live that life. Becket was more than happy to count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus his Lord.
Becket spends much of his time in ministry speaking at churches, universities, and conferences helping believers (and non-believers) understand this issue biblically, theologically, culturally, and personally. Balancing grace and truth when teaching on this subject is of primary importance. His goal is to challenge the current cultural narrative about sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular by demonstrating through his personal testimony and biblical truths that, yes, homosexuality is still a sin, and that following Christ is infinitely more satisfying and joyous.
He has lived all over the world in major cities such as Rome, Vienna, and Tokyo.
Becket graduated from Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in 2017 with a Master of Arts in Theology.
Becket’s book, A Change of Affection: A Gay Man’s Incredible Story of Redemption, with a
foreword by Francis Chan, published by Thomas Nelson, released July 30, 2019.

Satan is real, he wants you to doubt God! The very first thing Satan did before Adam and Eve fell was to make them question God…did God really say don’t eat…he always causes us to doubt the truth because he is a liar! Don’t fall for the lies, believe what is true and you will know God! Peace is only possible when we know the Prince of Peace 🙏

For a long time I believed it was all up to me to make the Christian life work So the answer to me was dig in my heels and TRY HARDER but God has an easier answer. We come to Him with whatever we have. If it is faith and joy success or sin faithor doubt He already knows what's going on in our hearts and minds He doesn't want us to try and pretend to be what we are not He wants our trust and our honesty We can confess our doubt as the sin that it is and ask Jesus for the grace we need to overcome it As often as we need He will always welcome you and give you the Holy Spirit The journey of faith is a process Have you ever read Pilgrim's Progress? @@broco6608 Thank you for asking. So so many reasons. I became a Christian soon after discovering Christian Apologetics on You Tube. I wasn’t raised in the Church. I love researching and learning as much as I can about the Bible and the history of Christianity. But the more I learn the more questions I have. Nobody seems to be able to answer my questions. Here’s just a few. Why are there so many disagreements among Biblical Scholars? Why does Bart Ehrman say one thing and another scholar say something else? How do you know who’s telling the truth? Why does Dr. Michael Heiser say so many of his colleagues are Atheists? Gee I thought studying the Bible should strengthen your faith. Why do so many Christians lose their faith after attending Seminaries? I wasn’t really questioning much about the Bible until I kept hearing Christian You Tubers bring this stuff up. Why is there so much wackiness going on in some Church’s? Why so much hypocrisy in the Church? Children being abused,Cheating spouses. Money hungry evangelists preaching the prosperity gospel. If the Bible is true how could God allow this to happen to his Church? Another thing that really bothers me is all the different beliefs within Protestantism. I have to agree with Catholics on that one. Though I could never be Catholic with their asking Mary, dead saints and guardian angles to pray for them. One of the biggest reasons though is probably not having had a single prayer answered. For the past 5 years I’ve meditated on his word and cried out to God. Please Lord show me you are real. I don’t want money, fame or popularity I just want to know if you are real. Nothing. I live in NYC you think God would speak through somebody or at least use somebody to reveal himself to me through them. Nothing ever comes of my prayers. I’m on the fence now of walking away.

I was born in the 60s and saw this devolving of our culture. My parents became believers in the early 70s, and I remember the grief they expressed over the terrible things happening. They raised my siblings and I to see the grace of God and to cling to Him. We all three stayed true to the Lord’s plans, married other believers and now have a humongous extended family who walks with the Lord too. What mercy, what grace, and beauty for ashes. My parents were brands snatched from hell and now they have a beautiful and eternal treasure. God’s ways are not ours. I pray for you often, Becket, as you are on the frontlines and speaking God’s truth.

@@johngarcia8827 I say this not to be flippant but to change perspectives a little. Because I have to resist the temptations both to lust and to anger. But if you replace what you said about sex with anger and violence, you'll see that the question only makes sense if you assume there's nothing wrong with it in the first place. If you realize it causes harm long term and only satisfies you initially but leads to greater sorrow later, the answer becomes obvious. You'll only have to resist those temptations for this lifetime. Thoughts, desires, actions: The thoughts you allow yourself to dwell on become your desires (and they pop up more often.) Then your desires become your actions. It's almost impossible to forever resist that which we truly desire. (That's why, if you truly desire the things of God, you will naturally move closer to him and his holiness.) Find good thoughts to replace them. Let those become your desires and act on them. Paul said singleness was a gift allowing greater service to God (for those who could accept it. as jesus said, some keep themselves single for the sake of the kingdom. He actually said make themselves eunuchs, not that i'm suggesting that.) And who knows, in that service you might find someone like minded who wants to share life and service with you. May God bless you.

Becket, I can say in truth that your show has been the single greatest forum for keeping me from relapsing into a relationship with a woman who lives as a man. It's been 16 months since I left that relationship and it has been a searing pain for just about the whole time. As a heterosexual woman, I miss the "man" she never was. The Holy Spirit would NOT leave me alone the whole time we were involved, and a day came in November 2020 when His urging simply could not be ignored another moment. Without the truth-speaking, Spirit-filled Christians giving their testimony and, because I tend to be overly cerebral, their brilliant intellectual reasoning based on the Word of God of why transgenderism and homosexuality stand outside God's design, I just wouldn't have been able to resist going back (not that "he" would have me at this point). When the Lord called you out of the world and inspired you to start your show, He must have had people in dilemmas like mine in mind. This chapter of my life has been the single hardest part of walking the narrow road for me. So thank you for doing putting your analysis together week after week. I absolutely count on them and the clarity and TRUTH they refill my mind, spirit and will with.

Can I just say it is so increasingly difficult nowadays to avoid these immoral influences. Im not a perfect Christian, to be honest I'm far from. To give a brief synapses I'm a SSA male in my late 20s and I have been trying to get away from that lifestyle as well as the sexual perversions that the media, Hollywood and society promotes. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for a child growing up nowadays with all of these confusing mixed messages and immorality. My generation is relatively pro sexual "freedom" and "liberation" but in reality beyond the striking buzzwords do they really know what they support? Even myself, I've supported much wrong throughout my life before I was saved and felt both shame & conviction of the holy spirit the older I became. Like you said Beckett the culture is so deeply being engrained within our institutions nowadays that we don't hear the alternatives unless we seek them out. Our country is lacking discernment. I hope my message doesn't come across too tangled, Im writing from the heart. I am not perfect like I said previously, but even I witness the collapse of a society from a believers point of view. Thank you as always for your videos, insight & personality. God bless, in Jesus name Amen 🙏.

There could be a root in your life that goes deeper than the SSA. Perhaps you feel like you're a spiritual orphan---no one in this world you can fully depend on. Its interesting what you said about feeling that something is wrong or off when we have sex outside of marriage.........I'm not a virgin(although I wish I was)and when I had sex for the first time it was not a joyous experience. In fact I felt consumed with a profound sense of guilt like I had just done something wrong. I wasnt a Christian at the time, although I had been born into the Catholic church, so I figured the guilt I was experiencing was a hold over from my catholic upbringing and as such, was something I could dismiss. The world and the culture told me what I did was ok, not just ok but "Healthy and normal". But still.........that sense of guilt didnt disappear. It was only after I became a Christian and read the Bible did I put 2 + 2 together. I heard an analogy that perfectly sums up sex: Sex is like fire, it can cook your food and heat your home but under the wrong conditions, that very same thing can burn your house down or burn you. Its interesting to look around and see just how sexualised everything is. Thats no mistake. Satan knows God's boundaries when it comes to sex and he tries to take sex from those boundaries so that people will destroy themselves with the very thing they use for pleasure. People think they're sexually liberated but in reality they're sexual slaves.

I"m sorry you've had such negative experiences and felt so much guilt over having sex outside of marriage. I hope you understand that this is not true for everyone and wasn't for me. I had several relationships before I met my husband and so did he. We weren't destroyed or living lives of "sexual slaves" as you put it, and have been happily married over 30 years. IMO, there's nothing wrong with consenting adults having an intimate relationship, regardless of marriage. If your faith or religion brings you comfort and helps you get through this life, that's wonderful. However, it's not your place to judge the choices of others or assume they are miserable because they don't believe as you do.

Thank you, Becket, for addressing these somewhat taboo topics! I lost my father as a teen. He was the only one who provided boundaries for me, so I quickly went off the rails! I had a large group of gay men friends, because I found them to be the most "fun" at the time. Thankfully, I turned my life back over to the Lord as a young woman. Many of my past friends have died of aids. It breaks my heart. As a flight attendant I work with many gay men. I can see how they are suffering in this kind of anxiety over their relationships, as you have talked about. They involve themselves in a lot of self-destructive behaviors. I do listen to them and try to respond in wisdom, but for most, they seem incapable of seeing what their lifestyle is doing to them. Other than praying for them and treating them with love and speaking truth in love, do you have any advice as to ways they might be reached?

I grew up having gay friends because they were fun to hang out with and though Im not gay I was molested a couple of times by different people and sexualized at 7 I had an open attitude to all sex and now that I see how wrong that was. Well I feel cheated out of knowing and loving someone. Because I wasnt capable of that then. This whole sexual culture is damaging and its even worse now. The things I did are considered normal now. I still have gay freinds but I cant imagine them going to hell because they are very good souls . I dont know. I do wish I could meet someone and fall in love. That may never happen. I also want to have haealthy sex but I think sex before marriage is wrong and I am past the age of finding a wife and starting a family so I may never have sex or meet anybody again

Wow! Lord just showed me how the body, temple, would have a gate around it. I’m getting the image of a city with a protective wall around it. We are the gate keepers of purity by taking captive every thought and impulse. When you don’t have a gate and allow thoughts and impulses to dictate your life it’s like an unfortified city open to attack and ransacking. Keep up the good fight of sexual purity. Blessings.

The Strength of sin is the law, and the love of Christ is what constrains us. Focusing on sin and the past stirs up rebellion. Satan is the accuser of the brethren. Rest in what Jesus did for you. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Focus on who you are as a born again believer in Christ who is saved 100% by Jesus’s blood and nothing we can add to it. God bless you.
