Today J dives into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to uncover why Dumbledore seems to trust Hagrid with such iron clad resolve in the same way he seems to trust Snape - Did Hagrid make a great confession of love? Did he save his life? Why does Hagrid’s wand still function in his umbrella if it was snapped in half?!

I was trying to think why Hagrid needed to be the one to bring in the Christmas trees and I think I got it. He has to get the trees from the Forbidden Forrest and he’s the only one with the relationship he has with it’s residents. I’m sure like the centaurs many magical creatures don’t like wizards or humans for that matter. Hagrid probably goes in and asks which trees he can take.

I just remembered something. Isn't Hagrid resistant to certain spells because he is half-giant? Maybe that's something Hagrid used to his advantage to help Dumbledore, but perhaps Hagrid almost died in the process, showing unwavering faith and loyalty to Dumbledore and bravery even against the most powerful dark wizard of the generation, despite his dark childhood. Honestly, now that I think about it, if Dumbledore saw this happening in front of him FIRST HAND, I would totally understand why he has absolute faith in Hagrid and why he'd "trust Hagrid with [his] own life."

it's possible that Hagrid is asked to "stand aside" by Grindelwald, but he refuses to do so (just like how Lily refused to stand aside from Harry for Voldemort), thereby casting some sort of love protection on him. admittedly it won't be as powerful as a mother's love for her son, but it might be one of the reasons Dumbledore is able to eventually beat Grindelwald.

That's more speculative but we already know the reason Dumbledore trusts. Dumbledore trusts people who have proven the ability to love unconditionally. Snape loves Lily so much that even after her death he pledged himself in defending her son whom he hated. Harry was willing to die from the age of 11 to protect those he loves and showed the same capacity each subsequent year. Hagrid loves even the most monstrous creatures despite how dangerous they are, indeed I'd argue that every friendship Hagrid makes he offers the same unconditional love. These are three people who have every reason to abandon love given their situations, but they chose not to even though doing so could kill them.

If I look at it positively, it's because Hagrid is a genuinely good person even if he is not the brightest person around. If I look at it cynically, it's because Dumbledore strategically knows that Hagrid, who has always faced prejudice and discrimination due to his heritage and love for scary creatures, is eager to please Dumbledore because he took Hagrid in when he was expelled/his father passed away. Furthermore, knowing how Dumbledore is always several steps ahead of everyone, I would assume Dumbledore always takes Hagrid's carelessness into account and assigns specific jobs that is pushed into action by Hagrid's carelessness.

I do think that the legendary duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald did happen, but maybe Hagrid did something to help Dumbledore win. Took care of Fawkes or found Fawkes maybe? 🤔 who knows? but I love this theory, it'd be so awesome to see even Newt and Hagrid interact. Which, side note, there is a theory that Newt gave Aragog to Hagrid. As Aragog explains how he came to be with Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: "I came to Hagrid from a distant land, in the pockets of a traveller." 👀

I agree. He trusts that Hagrid will put his life on the line to protect anything he was tasked with protecting. Dumbledore can’t truly be trusting Hagrid to keep a secret, though. He is too wise for that. Dumbledore May tell Hagrid that something is a secret, but surely he has every expectation that anything Hagrid knows has a good chance of leaking to Harry and friends. Either Dumbledore secretly wants this to happen, or is at least strategically preparing for that possibility. Nobody can be fully and unconditionally trusted. Only trusted in certain areas where they are the most predictable.

To invert this, I could trust an 85 year old man in that I'd talk to him about anything and value his advice. At the same time, I would not trust that man to pull me up from a ledge. Trust is based on intention, rather than capability, and Hagrid is not mentally capable of keeping complex secrets (as proven in childhood by Tom knowing he had an acromantula).

I agree that Dumbledore probably repaired Hagrid's wand, but why does everyone assume Hagrid does not know much magic? His formal education may have ended early, but he lived at the magic school for half a century and earned the trust and friendship of the greatest wizard of the age (and headmaster of the school he was living at). He probably learned more than most, but focused more on the subjects he was interested in.

One thing that I didn't realise until this video, for someone who only made it halfway through third year, Hagrid is really talented at transfiguration. Like, to be able to give pig features, given that he was already so close to a pig, is some serious aptitude. We're told in OOtP than the more "sentient" the creature, the more difficult the transfiguration is. The only explanation is that Dumbledore was giving Hagrid Transfiguration lessons on the side post-expulsion.

So, Hagrid only got up to Third Year, but when he gives Dudley his tail, and speeds up the boat, he does both spells non-verbally. How? (I suspect that Dumbledore might have been teaching Hagrid a few spells here and there, or maybe, once his wand was repaired, he tried to teach himself.

Even if Hagrid doesn't help Dumbledore win (which I REALLY hope he does, it'd be such a miss opportunity to not include him in these new movies!), I think Dumbledore would've still repaired his wand ASAP. Dumbledore is such a good judge of character, he knew Tom Riddle was BSing way before anyone else did and believed in Hagrid's innocence when no one else did. So I think he'd definitely repair it, as he knows that Hagrid is a good and genuine person through and through.

I am positive that Dumbledore mended Hagrid's wand and illegally tutored him at some point, getting him up to speed. He can cast spells silently, after all. That's 6th year stuff. Hagrid has had 50 years to learn it, so maybe he taught himself, but it seems unlikely.

I know this isn't at all related to this video, but the Snape quote got me thinking and I wanted to share a query with you: how much more impactful would Snape's death have been to everyone if while he's dying, looking into Harry....Lily's eyes.... he says to Harry. "You have her eyes....Lily's eyes....those are always what I loved most about her..." then dies without any further dialog. Ik, it goes against his character to reveal it to Harry like this, but I feel it would have been so intense( and confusing to use as readers at that time of the book) to hear those as his death words.

Hagrid is the sort to give his life for someone without hesitation. We see this time and again. He willingly surrenders to the ministry in CoS, he could have floored Fudge and Malfoy without breaking a sweat. Goblet has him defending Dumblore and acting as an aid wizard during the tournament. In book Five he stays for the students and Grawp. Year 6, he grabs Katie when, for all anyone knew, the xurse could have passed to him. Year 7 we see him in the battle where he not only tries to defend students, but the spiders as well. Imagine if Hagrid had been there when Lupin went moony in book 3. He could have single-handedly stopped lupin’s rampage.

You probably don't address this in the theory - but how was Hagrid supposed to bring Harry to the Dursley's on that kind of schedule if he hadn't just *happened* to run into Sirius Black who loaned him his motorcycle? There's no way Dumbledore could have predicted that (remember later he thought Sirius was guilty too), and Dumbledore shows up just before Hagrid does. Whereas if Hagrid had had to do it by foot, it would have taken *much* longer.

I think it's just because Dumbledore can see Hagrid's true character and allegiances. Hagrid isn't going to be one well versed in anything like legilimency so he would be like an open book and he is simply a true nice, gentle soul. Sure he may make mistakes (unless Dumbledore told him to do those things in his big plan) but he never does them maliciously. As for Dumbledore beating the elder wand, I don't think it's actually unbeatable. It simply makes the spells they already know and use more powerful and Dumbledore being a shade more skilled makes the difference. I also feel like by the time they duel grindelwald is probably slightly insane and unhinged making him more powerful yes, but also widening that skill gap further.

This doesn't entirely add up though because in Goblet of Fire Molly Weasley says that the Groundskeeper at Hogwarts in her time was some guy named Ogg (I think??, something along those lines anyway) and that would have been like the late 60's to early 70's so clearly Hagrid didn't slot straight into that role. I have no doubt that he definitely helped Dumbledore massively after being expelled and may have even saved his life.
